Dera Ghazi Khan: PMD, World Bank and Ghazi University Join Hands to Strengthen Hill Torrent Monitoring and Disaster Preparedness in Dera Ghazi Khan by establishment of State-of-the-Art Automatic Weather Station. A Major Milestone Towards Strengthening Weather Forecasting, Hill Torrent Monitoring and Community Resilience in Dera Ghazi Khan Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan, has taken a significant step towards strengthening weather monitoring, disaster preparedness and climate resilience in the region through the establishment of a state-of-the-art Automatic Weather Station (AWS) under the World Bank-supported Modernization of Hydromet Services of PMD in Pakistan Project (MHSP). The initiative, being implemented by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) with support from the World Bank, aims to modernize Pakistan’s hydrometeorological observation network, enhance forecasting capabilities and improve climate service delivery. The project is expected to play a vital role in strengthening early warning systems and disaster preparedness, particularly in areas vulnerable to extreme weather events and climate-related hazards. The proposed Automatic Weather Station at Ghazi University will provide real-time, high-resolution meteorological data, significantly contributing to weather forecasting and the monitoring of weather conditions associated with hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan. Given the region’s vulnerability to flash floods and hill torrents, the installation represents an important step towards improving early warning capabilities and protecting communities, livelihoods and infrastructure. Under Phase-I of the MHSP, a total of 110 Automatic Weather Stations are being installed across Pakistan, including 25 stations in Punjab. These stations will expand the country’s real-time weather observation network and provide reliable meteorological data to support forecasting, research, disaster risk reduction and climate-resilience planning. A project team recently visited Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan, where it held a meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad. During the visit, the team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the proposed site, finalized the location for installation of the Automatic Weather Station, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formally designating Ghazi University as an AWS installation site. The visiting delegation comprised Mr. Hassan Shafiq, Environment & Social Safeguards Consultant, World Bank; Dr. M. Yasir, Hydrology Consultant; Mr. Abdul Aziz, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre Lahore, Pakistan Meteorological Department; and Mr. Sajid Hussain, Meteorologist, PMD. The delegation was accompanied by Dr. Sagheer Atta, Director ORIC, Ghazi University. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad expressed the university’s strong commitment to supporting the initiative and emphasized the importance of establishing an Automatic Weather Station at Ghazi University. He stated that the facility would not only strengthen real-time weather monitoring and forecasting in Dera Ghazi Khan but would also significantly enhance the monitoring and early warning of hill torrents, helping improve disaster preparedness and protect local communities from potential hazards. He described this contribution as an important form of community service, particularly for vulnerable populations in the hill-torrent-prone areas of the region. The station will also create valuable opportunities for research, academic collaboration, student training and practical learning in meteorology, hydrology, climate science and related disciplines.

Pakistani celebrities voice support for India’s student protesters

A student movement in India demanding accountability and reform in the country’s education system has drawn a wave of public support from celebrities on both sides of the border, with Pakistani and Indian stars alike using their platforms to stand alongside the protesters. The Cockroach Janta Party movement began after allegations emerged of widespread examination paper leaks, and has since grown into a nationwide campaign calling for greater transparency and systemic reform in India’s education sector. While the protests started peacefully, clashes with authorities have since been reported in some areas, drawing even wider attention to the students’ cause. Pakistani actors were among the first from across the border to express solidarity. Azfar Rehman shared a video showing alleged police brutality against the protesters, writing: “Shame on the Indian police and government for such insensitive and inhumane behaviour towards students. It’s really sad how these kids are being insulted and beaten up.” Television host Maya Khan praised the students’ awareness and sense of purpose, describing today’s youth as well-informed and saying she stood with them regardless of nationality. Actor Bilal Qureshi expressed empathy, writing simply: “I can feel the pain of this generation, here and there.” Rapper Talha Anjum addressed the protesters directly in an Instagram Story, telling them he had great respect for their resilience and understood their frustration, urging them to stay strong. From within India’s own entertainment industry, the response has been equally vocal. Salman Khan shared a childhood photograph of himself in a school uniform on Instagram, describing the protests as a peaceful movement for educational reform and expressing sadness at the violent turn some demonstrations had taken. He called the issue of paper leaks a very serious one and urged that the movement stay focused on education rather than be pulled into political territory. Alia Bhatt praised the students’ determination in a heartfelt post, describing them as the generation that will shape India’s future and calling their persistence both heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure. Preity Zinta also voiced support for the students’ demands while cautioning that peaceful demonstrations should not be taken over by what she described as anti-national elements. She additionally called on the Indian government to begin meaningful dialogue with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since the protests began. Rakhi Sawant expressed support and questioned the treatment students had faced during the demonstrations. Other Bollywood names who had already lent their voices to the movement included Diljit Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shabana Azmi, Pooja Bhatt, Arijit Singh, actor Imran Khan and Zeenat Aman. Not all celebrities have spoken out, and the silence of some has drawn its own kind of scrutiny. A fan page dedicated to Katrina Kaif reportedly shut down, citing disappointment over her decision not to comment on the protests, a reminder that on certain issues, staying quiet is itself read as a statement by an audience that is watching closely.

Cotton prices rise further across Pakistan

Cotton prices have continued their upward movement in Pakistan, with rates increasing by Rs500 per maund as the market remains firm amid changing supply and demand conditions. According to Ehsan-ul-Haq, chairman of the Exchange Ginners Forum (EGF), the price of cotton in Punjab has risen to Rs19,300 per maund, while rates in Sindh have reached Rs18,400 per maund. The latest increase highlights the continued volatility in the domestic cotton market, where prices have been fluctuating in response to market activity and the availability of quality cotton. Ginners and traders are closely monitoring the situation as changes in supply and buying interest continue to influence prices across major cotton-producing regions. Punjab and Sindh remain key cotton-producing areas in the country, and movements in prices in these provinces often have a direct impact on the wider textile and agricultural sectors. The textile industry, one of Pakistan’s major economic sectors, relies heavily on a steady supply of locally produced cotton to meet the demand for yarn and other textile products. Ehsan-ul-Haq said the market could experience further fluctuations in the coming days. He noted that cotton prices may remain sensitive to changes in supply, demand and overall trading activity. Market participants are now watching developments closely to assess whether the recent rise will continue or whether prices will stabilise after the latest increase. Any significant change in cotton availability or buying trends could lead to further movement in rates, adding to uncertainty for growers, ginners, traders and textile manufacturers. The latest price increase comes at a time when stakeholders across the cotton supply chain are keeping a close eye on market conditions. Further developments in domestic trading activity are expected to determine the direction of cotton prices in the near term.
