Pakistani celebrities voice support for India’s student protesters

A student movement in India demanding accountability and reform in the country’s education system has drawn a wave of public support from celebrities on both sides of the border, with Pakistani and Indian stars alike using their platforms to stand alongside the protesters.
The Cockroach Janta Party movement began after allegations emerged of widespread examination paper leaks, and has since grown into a nationwide campaign calling for greater transparency and systemic reform in India’s education sector. While the protests started peacefully, clashes with authorities have since been reported in some areas, drawing even wider attention to the students’ cause.
Pakistani actors were among the first from across the border to express solidarity. Azfar Rehman shared a video showing alleged police brutality against the protesters, writing: “Shame on the Indian police and government for such insensitive and inhumane behaviour towards students. It’s really sad how these kids are being insulted and beaten up.” Television host Maya Khan praised the students’ awareness and sense of purpose, describing today’s youth as well-informed and saying she stood with them regardless of nationality. Actor Bilal Qureshi expressed empathy, writing simply: “I can feel the pain of this generation, here and there.” Rapper Talha Anjum addressed the protesters directly in an Instagram Story, telling them he had great respect for their resilience and understood their frustration, urging them to stay strong.
From within India’s own entertainment industry, the response has been equally vocal. Salman Khan shared a childhood photograph of himself in a school uniform on Instagram, describing the protests as a peaceful movement for educational reform and expressing sadness at the violent turn some demonstrations had taken. He called the issue of paper leaks a very serious one and urged that the movement stay focused on education rather than be pulled into political territory. Alia Bhatt praised the students’ determination in a heartfelt post, describing them as the generation that will shape India’s future and calling their persistence both heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure.
Preity Zinta also voiced support for the students’ demands while cautioning that peaceful demonstrations should not be taken over by what she described as anti-national elements. She additionally called on the Indian government to begin meaningful dialogue with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since the protests began. Rakhi Sawant expressed support and questioned the treatment students had faced during the demonstrations.
Other Bollywood names who had already lent their voices to the movement included Diljit Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shabana Azmi, Pooja Bhatt, Arijit Singh, actor Imran Khan and Zeenat Aman.
Not all celebrities have spoken out, and the silence of some has drawn its own kind of scrutiny. A fan page dedicated to Katrina Kaif reportedly shut down, citing disappointment over her decision not to comment on the protests, a reminder that on certain issues, staying quiet is itself read as a statement by an audience that is watching closely.

Internet restored in Muzaffarabad after 53 days

Broadband internet services have been restored in Muzaffarabad after a 53-day suspension, bringing relief to residents, businesses, journalists and students who had struggled with limited digital connectivity since early June. The restoration took effect late Wednesday night, allowing broadband users to regain access to online services. However, mobile internet connectivity remained unstable in several areas, with users continuing to report intermittent disruptions. The prolonged shutdown had significantly affected communication, online banking, digital businesses, educational activities and media coverage, particularly during the ongoing election season in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Journalists and political workers had repeatedly raised concerns over the lack of internet access, saying it hindered the flow of information and election-related reporting. The restoration comes just days before the second phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for August 2, when more than 1.24 million voters are expected to cast their ballots in 21 constituencies. The polls will include nine constituencies in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for Jammu and Kashmir refugees residing in Pakistan. Election authorities have completed polling arrangements and announced enhanced security measures to ensure peaceful, transparent and orderly elections. A total of 351 candidates are contesting the second phase, with several high-profile political leaders participating in closely watched races. Political campaigning has intensified across Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley and Jhelum Valley as major parties make their final push to secure voter support before polling day.

Nick Reiner denied $1.5 million trust fund access

Nick Reiner has suffered another legal and financial setback following his indictment in connection with the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Reiner. The 32-year-old writer is reportedly being denied access to a trust fund worth more than $1.5 million as he prepares to fight the serious criminal charges against him. According to a report published on Saturday, August 15, a new trustee overseeing Reiner’s trust has refused his request to withdraw money from the account. Reiner had sought access to the funds to help cover his legal expenses and pay for basic necessities while he remains in custody. The decision is reportedly based on California’s so-called “slayer statute.” Such laws are designed to prevent an individual from financially benefiting from the death of someone they are accused of intentionally killing. The statute can restrict a person’s ability to inherit or receive assets connected to the alleged victim. Reiner’s trust was established by his parents after his birth in 1993 and is now valued at more than $1.5 million. In a court filing, Reiner claimed that he was expected to receive half of the trust once he reached the age of 30. However, he said that the money had never been transferred to him. He is now seeking access to the funds, arguing that they are needed to pay his attorneys and support himself while incarcerated. His request reportedly includes money for his commissary account, which he said would allow him to purchase everyday necessities such as socks and personal hygiene products. The dispute over the trust comes shortly after prosecutors secured an indictment against Reiner in the deaths of his parents. On Wednesday, August 12, a Los Angeles grand jury reportedly indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder. The charges relate to the deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner. Prosecutors presented evidence to the grand jury, which ultimately determined that there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed toward trial. The indictment also reportedly includes a special circumstance allegation of “lying in wait.” Prosecutors allege that Reiner deliberately waited for his parents before attacking them when they were vulnerable or unaware. The additional allegation could significantly increase the potential consequences if Reiner is ultimately convicted. Depending on how the case proceeds and the applicable sentencing rules, a conviction involving such circumstances could expose him to extremely severe punishment, including life imprisonment without parole or potentially the death penalty. For now, Reiner remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations against him have yet to be proven in court. His ongoing legal battle now involves not only the murder charges but also an effort to gain access to the substantial trust established by his parents.

Zanjeerain takes a dramatic turn as Sarbuland and Rabia marry

Pakistani prime-time drama Zanjeerain has continued to attract strong attention from viewers with its emotional storyline, intense conflicts and unexpected twists. The Hum TV drama, directed by Shahzad Kashmiri and written by Farhat Ishtiaq, explores tribal traditions and family conflicts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The drama has gained significant popularity following several heartbreaking developments, particularly the deaths of Sher Dil, Mudassir and Bano. These events changed the direction of the story and left viewers wondering how the surviving characters would move forward. After airing 30 episodes, Zanjeerain has now reached another major turning point. In the latest episodes, the jirga made a surprising decision involving Sarbuland and Rabia. As part of the traditional practice of Khoon Baha, Sarbuland was expected to marry Rabia, a decision that came as a shock to many viewers. The much-discussed twist finally reached its conclusion in Episode 30 when Sarbuland and Rabia’s Nikah was solemnized. Their marriage has generated a strong reaction online, particularly among fans who had been hoping to see the two characters together following Bano’s tragic death. Many viewers celebrated what they saw as the much-awaited Sarbiya pairing, while others questioned the sudden development and its implications for the story. Some fans were amused by how quickly the characters moved toward marriage despite the tragic events that had taken place before it. One viewer jokingly pointed out that after so many deaths and tragedies, the characters suddenly got married without much difficulty. Another fan expressed excitement over the unexpected development, saying the twist was so surprising that they wanted to celebrate. However, not everyone was pleased with the storyline. Several viewers felt that the marriage did not fit naturally with the emotional journey of the characters. Some questioned what the development meant for Mudassir and Bano, arguing that the story appeared to move on from their relationship too quickly. Others criticised the makers for turning Mudassir’s wish to protect Rabia into a marriage between her and Sarbuland. One disappointed viewer argued that Mudassir had only asked Sarbuland to keep Rabia safe, rather than marry her. Despite the mixed reactions, the Sarbuland-Rabia Nikah has clearly become one of the most talked-about developments in Zanjeerain. The unexpected turn has left fans divided, with many now eager to see how the newly married couple’s relationship unfolds in the upcoming episodes.

Mohammad Nawaz ruled out of Champions Cup

Pakistan’s spin-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has been ruled out of the National Champions Cup after suffering a fracture to the middle finger of his right hand. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the injury on Friday, revealing that Nawaz is expected to remain away from competitive cricket for at least three weeks. Nawaz sustained the injury while fielding during the National Champions Cup match between Pakistan Gold and Pakistan Blues at Multan Cricket Stadium on August 12. Despite hurting his finger, the experienced all-rounder remarkably completed his full 10-over spell. His efforts, however, could not prevent Pakistan Gold from suffering a six-wicket defeat against Pakistan Blues. Medical scans conducted on August 13 confirmed the fracture, forcing Nawaz to withdraw from the ongoing domestic competition. The setback comes at an inconvenient time for the left-arm spinner, who has remained an important part of Pakistan’s experienced white-ball setup. According to the PCB, Nawaz will report to the board’s Sports and Exercise Medicine Department after two weeks. He will then undergo rehabilitation under medical supervision, with his recovery closely monitored before a decision is made regarding his return to competitive cricket. The medical team will assess his progress throughout the rehabilitation process, while the priority will be ensuring that the finger has recovered sufficiently before he resumes full cricketing activities. Nawaz’s absence is a blow to his team’s campaign in the Champions Cup, where the tournament provides Pakistan’s established players and emerging talent with valuable competitive exposure. For Nawaz, the immediate focus will now shift from domestic cricket to recovery. The three-week initial timeline could change depending on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation. The PCB is expected to provide further updates on his fitness as he progresses through the recovery programme.

Hafiz Naeem targets IPP deals, fuel prices

Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has strongly criticised the government over rising fuel prices, heavy taxation and electricity costs. Addressing participants at the party’s sit-in in Lahore, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the government was putting an increasing financial burden on ordinary citizens. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices. He said the petroleum levy had no direct connection with the actual price of petrol. He questioned the justification for repeatedly increasing fuel prices and said the government was making life more difficult for the public. “The government drops a petrol bomb on us every day,” he said. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also criticised the government’s policies regarding independent power producers (IPPs). He alleged that successive governments had entered into unfair agreements with IPPs in the name of ending load-shedding. According to him, the government was now passing the cost of its own shortcomings on to the people through higher taxes. He said citizens were already struggling with expensive electricity and gas bills. The Jamaat-e-Islami leader said heavy taxes were being imposed on electricity and gas bills. He argued that such charges were increasing household expenses and adding to the difficulties faced by ordinary consumers. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman further said the government had shut down five of the 27 IPPs. He referred to the government’s own claim that the move would provide a benefit of Rs3,360 billion to the national exchequer. He questioned why similar measures could not be taken to provide lasting relief to consumers. He said the government should focus on reducing electricity costs instead of continuously increasing taxes and other charges. The Jamaat-e-Islami emir also criticised the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). He alleged that corruption within the tax collection system remained widespread. He called for greater transparency and accountability in government institutions. He said economic policies should be designed to provide relief to the public rather than increase their financial difficulties.
