Gulf conflict pushes oil above $100

Global oil prices continued their sharp upward trend on Friday as escalating conflict in the Gulf region raised fresh concerns about energy supplies and the outlook for the world economy. The sustained rise in crude prices has increased fears of renewed inflation, unsettled financial markets and strengthened expectations that central banks may keep interest rates higher for a longer period.

Brent crude was trading at around $100 per barrel after briefly crossing $102, its highest level in nearly two months. Oil prices have climbed by almost 40% during the month, driven by growing concerns that the conflict could disrupt major shipping routes used for transporting crude oil.

The latest increase comes as military tensions involving the United States, Iran and the Iran-backed Houthi movement continue to intensify. Attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea have heightened concerns about the safety of one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. At the same time, uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has added to worries over global oil supplies.

Analysts say the combination of risks to both the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz has significantly increased market uncertainty. Any prolonged disruption in these waterways could reduce oil exports from the Middle East and place additional pressure on global energy markets.

The rise in crude prices has also revived concerns about inflation. Higher oil prices generally increase transportation, manufacturing and production costs, which can eventually lead to higher prices for goods and services. Economists warn that this could slow progress in reducing inflation across many countries.

Global financial markets reacted cautiously to the latest developments. Major Asian stock markets recorded notable losses as investors worried about the combined impact of geopolitical tensions, rising energy costs and uncertainty over future economic growth. Investors increasingly shifted towards safer assets amid concerns that market volatility could continue.

The outlook for monetary policy has also changed. Financial markets now expect that major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve, could delay planned interest rate cuts or even consider further rate increases if higher energy prices continue to fuel inflation.

Suspended ASI gets four-day police remand

A Lahore court on Wednesday handed a four-day physical remand of a suspended assistant sub-inspector (ASI) to police for further investigation into the alleged rape of a mentally challenged young woman inside Ghaziabad Police Station. The suspect, identified as suspended ASI Imran, was presented before Judicial Magistrate Iram Yousaf by the investigating team. Police requested a 14-day physical remand, stating that further custody was necessary to collect evidence and complete the investigation into the alleged sexual assault. After hearing the arguments, the court approved a four-day physical remand instead of the two-week period sought by investigators. The suspect will remain in police custody while investigators continue gathering evidence and recording statements. The case has sparked widespread concern after authorities alleged that the incident occurred within the premises of a police station. Following the allegations, Lahore police suspended the entire staff of Ghaziabad Police Station, citing administrative failures, negligence and poor supervision. According to the first information report (FIR), the case was registered on August 3 under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deals with rape, along with Section 155C of the Police Order 2002 concerning misconduct by police officials. The complaint was filed by the victim’s father. Police officials said senior officers immediately took notice of the incident after the FIR was registered. The accused officer was arrested, while departmental action was initiated against police personnel responsible for supervising the station. In a separate disciplinary move, authorities suspended 78 police officials posted at the station, holding them accountable for negligence and failure to ensure proper oversight. According to the complainant, his mentally challenged daughter, believed to be around 19 or 20 years old, left home on the afternoon of August 3 and did not return for several hours. During the search, a local resident allegedly informed the family that a policeman in plain clothes had taken the young woman away. The victim’s father said he rushed to the police station, where he was told that his daughter had already gone home. When the family returned, they found her distressed and crying. He alleged that his daughter told them she had been taken to the police station by a police officer and sexually assaulted. Following her statement, the family approached authorities and sought legal action against the accused officer.

Ariana Grande chooses love over fame

Pop star Ariana Grande is reportedly looking forward to taking a break from the spotlight after completing her Eternal Sunshine Tour, with plans to spend more time with family, close friends and her reported partner Ricky Alvarez. According to media reports, Grande’s demanding schedule of concerts, rehearsals and other professional commitments has left little room for her personal life over the past several months. Sources close to the singer say she is eager to enjoy uninterrupted time with the people closest to her once the tour concludes. Grande and Ricky Alvarez previously dated between 2015 and 2016 after he joined her as a backup dancer. Reports suggest the pair have rekindled their relationship following the singer’s split from actor Ethan Slater. The two have recently been seen together on several occasions during breaks in the tour, fuelling speculation that their romance has resumed. Representatives for the singer have also confirmed that Grande intends to step back from public appearances after the tour ends. The decision comes amid growing public discussion about her health and well-being. According to her spokesperson, the singer hopes to finish the tour on a positive note before taking a well-earned break from public-facing work. The statement added that the pause will allow her to focus on her health and enjoy time away from constant public attention. As part of her planned hiatus, Grande has also withdrawn from the upcoming West End revival of Sunday in the Park with George, a production that would have reunited her with Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey. The announcement follows the release of her eighth studio album, Petal, which sparked widespread discussion online after some fans expressed concern about her appearance in the music video’s lead single. Grande launched the Eternal Sunshine Tour in June 2026 in Oakland, California, and is scheduled to wrap up the 41-show tour at London’s O2 Arena on September 1 before beginning her extended break.

Nearly 100 children wrongly detained as adults under UK-France migration deal

At least 94 children were mistakenly identified as adults and held in immigration detention under Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s “one in, one out” agreement with France, according to details disclosed in a letter from the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB). Between August 2025 and May 2026, Home Office officials recorded 304 age-disputed cases arising from the scheme, officially named Operation Hillmore, with 31% ultimately confirmed to be minors. Standard UK policy strictly prohibits the detention of unaccompanied minors beyond 24 hours. The critical findings, sent to Home Office Minister Anna Turley by interim IMB chair Jane Leech, highlighted severe safeguarding and procedural failures. Age assessments at immigration removal centers took up to 40 days to resolve in certain instances, while some individuals faced deportation delays of up to 27 weeks, far exceeding the scheme’s 28-day target. Additionally, detainees were slated for removal despite requiring urgent hospital care or suffering from active tuberculosis. The Refugee Council condemned the findings, urging the government to rely on social-worker-led assessments rather than administrative border checks. In response, a Home Office spokesperson stated that age assessment procedures are being modernized, including plans to roll out AI tools next year to support determinations.
