South Korea estimates North Korea’s economy grew over 3 percent for third year

North Korea’s economy expanded by more than three percent in 2025 for the third consecutive year, according to new estimates released by South Korea’s central bank. The report suggests that stronger economic and military cooperation with Russia played a major role in boosting growth despite North Korea’s continued international isolation. The Bank of Korea, which has published annual estimates of North Korea’s economy since 1991 because Pyongyang does not release official economic data, estimated that the country’s real gross domestic product grew by 3.5 percent last year. The report valued North Korea’s economy at approximately 38.26 trillion won, or about 26.6 billion dollars. According to Bank of Korea officials, expanded cooperation with Russia was one of the main reasons for the improvement. Analysts have said North Korea has strengthened ties with Moscow by supplying troops and military equipment for Russia’s war in Ukraine. In return, Pyongyang is believed to have received financial assistance, food supplies, energy resources and military technology. A Bank of Korea official said increased weapons exports to Russia supported growth in North Korea’s manufacturing sector. The official also noted that a rise in Russian tourists and improved transport links between the two countries contributed to stronger performance in construction and service industries. The report estimated that North Korea’s exports increased by 30 percent during 2025, reaching around 470 million dollars. Among the leading export products were prepared feathers and wigs, along with toys and sporting goods. Although the report did not identify all exported items, officials said stronger overseas sales contributed significantly to economic growth. The latest figures were released as reports continued to highlight growing military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. Ukraine’s military intelligence, quoted by the Kyiv Independent, claimed that more than 7,000 North Korean troops were killed or wounded while fighting alongside Russian forces during military operations in Russia’s Kursk region between 2024 and 2025. Neither Russia nor North Korea has independently confirmed those figures. Separately, the Ukrainian human rights organisation Truth Hounds said Russia and North Korea are close to completing their first road bridge connecting the two countries. The group said such a link could strengthen military and economic cooperation by allowing easier movement of personnel, equipment and supplies across the border. The Bank of Korea also reported a significant increase in North Korea’s gross national income, which measures the total income earned by a country’s residents. The estimate showed GNI rising by 9.4 percent to 48.5 trillion won, or approximately 33.8 billion dollars. Officials said the increase was supported by higher foreign currency earnings, including income linked to North Korean personnel sent to Russia. Despite the recent growth, North Korea’s economy remains extremely small compared with its southern neighbour. According to the Bank of Korea, North Korea’s gross national income is still less than two percent of South Korea’s economy, highlighting the large economic gap that continues to separate the two countries. The latest estimates suggest that while North Korea remains under international sanctions and largely isolated from global markets, its expanding partnership with Russia is providing new sources of economic activity that have helped sustain growth for a third straight year.

Sharmeen Ali, Sunita Marshall, Saima Qureshi urge parents to raise self-sufficient kids

Sharmeen Ali, Sunita Marshall and Saima Qureshi have spoken up about raising self-reliant children. They believe both sons and daughters should learn practical life skills from a young age. The three actors shared their thoughts on Nida Yasir’s morning show. They agreed that independence has nothing to do with gender. Every child should be able to take care of themselves. Every child should also help around the house. Sunita brought up safety concerns in cities like Karachi. She said these often limit how freely kids can move outdoors. Even so, she believes parents can still teach independence at home. Simple habits matter, she said. Making the bed. Cooking a basic meal. These small tasks add up over time. She also spoke about extracurricular activities. Her son manages rowing and tuition on his own schedule. That balance, she said, teaches real time management. Saima, who is raising three sons, shared a similar approach. She has her children handle their own chores. Washing dishes. Making tea. Ironing clothes. If the house needs dusting and help isn’t around, they step in too. Without early discipline, she said, kids won’t develop that habit later. Sunita added that chores are shared across her household. She takes a turn. Her husband, Hassan, takes a turn. The kids take their own turns too. Sharmeen agreed with both actors. She said chores should never be split by gender. Working mothers can’t always be present, she pointed out. That means kids need to solve problems on their own. She then reflected on her own journey. Learning to drive after her separation gave her real independence. Now, she wants to pass that same skill on to her 17-year-old daughter. The conversation also touched on how children are growing up today. The internet, they agreed, has made kids more informed than before. Saima recalled moments when her children corrected her after learning something new online. Sunita shared how her son taught himself detailed history facts from YouTube, long before school covered the same topics. Even with all this exposure, the actors were clear about one thing. Academics still come first. Screen time and hobbies, they said, should work more like rewards. Boundaries matter, and so does staying involved in a child’s daily life.

According to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), the incident took place in Umar Brohi Goth area of Gulshan-e-Maymar. During the operation, the alleged criminals opened fire on police teams. Officials said a police officer was also injured in the firing. The SIU claimed that the three suspects already arrested in connection with Dr Akash’s murder were killed after being hit by bullets fired by their own accomplices during the clash. Nicole Kidman has fueled fresh romance speculation after she was photographed enjoying what appeared to be a relaxing holiday with businessman Michael Reinstein in Italy, months after finalizing her divorce from longtime husband Keith Urban. The former couple, who were married for almost two decades, share two daughters, Sunday and Faith. Their divorce was finalized in January 2026, marking the official conclusion of their long relationship. Since then, both Kidman and Urban have largely kept their personal lives out of the spotlight. SEF, Sindh Boy Scouts launch initiative to expand scouting across Foundation-assisted schools*

KARACHI: The Sindh Education Foundation (SEF), Government of Sindh has initiated a collaboration with the Sindh Boy Scouts Association by holding a Group Scout Leadership Seminar aimed at promoting leadership, discipline and community service among students enrolled in Foundation Assisted Schools. The seminar, held at the Sindh Boy Scouts Association headquarters in Karachi, brought together representatives from 32 Foundation Assisted Schools, including head teachers, faculty members and students. The event was attended by SEF Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari, Deputy Managing Director Shahpara Rizvi, Regional Head Karachi Ashfaque Hussain Meerani, senior directors, assistant directors and other officials. The Sindh Boy Scouts Association was represented by Provincial Scout Secretary Syed Akhter Meer, and other office-bearers. Addressing the seminar, Provincial Scout Secretary Syed Akhter Meer welcomed the participation of SEF schools and said introducing students to the history and values of scouting would encourage them to become part of a global movement focused on leadership, character building and service. He also recalled the support extended to the scouting movement by the late Prof Dr Anita Ghulam Ali during her tenure at SEF, saying it was encouraging to witness the Foundation continuing the same commitment under the leadership of Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari. Participants were also briefed on the history of the scouting movement in Sindh, its achievements and future roadmap through a presentation highlighting the organisation’s contribution to youth development. Former senior bureaucrat Ghulam Ali Pasha said leadership and discipline could not be developed through classroom education alone, stressing that scouting provides young people with practical exposure to teamwork, responsibility and community service. He described such initiatives as essential for preparing students to become confident and responsible leaders. Speaking on the occasion, SEF Managing Director Gahanwer Ali Laghari said the Foundation’s mandate extended beyond improving access to education and academic outcomes. “Alongside quality education, we want our students to develop leadership, discipline and a sense of responsibility. Through scouting, they will have an opportunity to become part of an international movement that promotes these values,” he said. Laghari announced that SEF and the Sindh Boy Scouts Association would jointly organise a series of scouting activities across Foundation Assisted Schools throughout the province. He said the initiative had been launched with schools in Karachi and would gradually be expanded to all SEF-supported schools. “Our objective is to engage the entire network of Foundation Assisted Schools, and we are hopeful that within the next one-and-a-half years, scouting activities will be introduced across the province,” he added. The initiative is expected to provide students with greater opportunities for leadership development, teamwork and community engagement alongside their academic education.
