Trump faces awkward moment as Epstein letter repor…

WASHINGTON: An uncomfortable chapter in the long-running controversy surrounding President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein returned to the spotlight after journalists whose reporting brought an alleged birthday letter linked to the two men into public view were honored at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The moment came during the rescheduled annual dinner on July 24, where Trump was present as The Wall Street Journal received the inaugural Katharine Graham Award for Courage and Accountability for its investigative reporting on his past relationship with Epstein.

The award recognized the Journal’s reporting on a controversial letter allegedly written by Trump for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003. Trump has denied writing the letter and has strongly disputed the newspaper’s account. The report nevertheless triggered renewed public attention on Trump’s past association with Epstein and contributed to wider scrutiny of documents connected to the late financier.

What made the award particularly striking was Trump’s presence in the room.

According to reports from the event, Trump briefly congratulated the journalists as they received the honor. His reaction attracted attention because he had previously threatened legal action against the Journal over its Epstein reporting.

The dinner itself had already been surrounded by unusual circumstances. The original White House Correspondents’ Association gathering in April was disrupted by a shooting incident, forcing the event to be postponed. The rescheduled dinner took place in July under heightened security measures.

Trump also used his speech to take several pointed shots at journalists and political opponents, continuing his frequently combative relationship with the American press. The event nevertheless maintained its traditional role of honoring journalists for investigative and public-interest reporting.

The Epstein controversy remains politically sensitive in the United States. Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while facing sex-trafficking charges, had social and professional connections with numerous prominent people. The release and examination of documents related to his activities have repeatedly generated political controversy.

For Trump, the latest episode creates an unusual image: a president sitting in the audience as journalists he has publicly challenged receive an award for reporting on one of the most politically explosive stories surrounding his past.

The development is likely to keep the Epstein controversy in the headlines, particularly as questions surrounding previously unreleased documents and Trump’s historical relationship with Epstein continue to attract intense public and political scrutiny.

UEFA opposes FIFA’s $20bn commercial venture proposal

FIFA is facing growing criticism over its proposal to establish a new commercial subsidiary valued at $20 billion, a move that would oversee the commercial and operational management of the FIFA World Cup and other major international tournaments. The governing body plans to launch the new entity under the name FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). According to the proposal, the company would be responsible for handling commercial rights, sponsorship operations, event management, and other business activities linked to FIFA’s flagship competitions. While FIFA intends to retain full control of the new company, it plans to sell up to 20 percent of its shares to outside investors. The sale is expected to raise approximately $4.2 billion, which FIFA says will be reinvested into the global development of football. The proposal has sparked strong opposition, particularly from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which argues that the plan risks turning the governance of football into a commercial asset. UEFA believes the sport’s core values should not be influenced by external investors, warning that football’s integrity and independence must remain protected. FIFA, however, insists that the new structure is designed to strengthen, rather than undermine, the global game. The organization says the funds generated through the partial sale of the company will support football development projects around the world, including investments in infrastructure, coaching programs, grassroots initiatives, women’s football, youth development, and financial assistance for member associations. FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the proposal, saying the organization remains committed to ensuring equal opportunities for football development across all regions. He emphasized that any net profits generated through the new subsidiary would be reinvested directly into football rather than distributed elsewhere. Infantino also stressed that FIFA would continue to exercise full authority over football governance, competition regulations, the international match calendar, and the organization of its tournaments. According to FIFA, the creation of the subsidiary would not affect the governing body’s decision-making powers or its responsibility for managing the sport. Reports have suggested that the group of potential investors could be led by an investment platform associated with Joshua Kushner, although FIFA has not officially confirmed the identities of any future shareholders. The proposal has also drawn criticism from several political figures and football stakeholders, who argue that the FIFA World Cup is one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events and should not become part of a structure involving private investment. Critics believe that introducing outside shareholders, even without granting them control, could create commercial pressures that may influence the long-term direction of the sport. Despite the backlash, FIFA has made it clear that the proposal has not yet been finalized. Before any changes are implemented, the plan will be presented to FIFA’s Council and all 211 member associations for review and approval. The final decision will depend on whether FIFA’s members believe the new commercial structure can generate greater financial support for football while preserving the organization’s independence, governance, and commitment to the global growth of the game.

Shai Hope anchors West Indies after Pakistan strike early

Shai Hope remained unbeaten on 89 as West Indies reached 303-7 at lunch on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Stadium. Hope faced 174 deliveries and struck six boundaries and one six during a composed innings that helped the hosts recover from early pressure. Pakistan made an important breakthrough soon after play resumed, removing well-set batter Kavem Hodge for 84. West Indies had started the day on 194-3 after rain severely disrupted the opening day. Hodge’s dismissal came after he edged a delivery from Mohammad Ali towards second slip, where Salman Ali Agha completed the catch. Pakistan’s bowlers had another chance shortly before the wicket when Hope was dropped in the slips by Azan Awais. The missed opportunity proved costly as Hope continued to strengthen West Indies’ position. At the other end, Shamar Joseph provided valuable support to Hope. He was unbeaten on 23 from just 12 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six to keep the scoreboard moving quickly. Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad also tested the West Indies batters during the morning session, but Hope held firm to guide the hosts through to lunch. West Indies now have an opportunity to build a sizeable first-innings total, while Pakistan will look for quick wickets in the afternoon session to prevent the hosts from taking control of the Test.

Sewage flood damages SBCA property records

KARACHI: Sewage water has flooded the record room at the headquarters of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), damaging hundreds of land and building-related files and raising concerns over the safety of vital property records. The affected room at the SBCA Civic Centre headquarters contains thousands of documents submitted by citizens, including approved building plans, structural drawings and other records used to verify property details. Officials retain copies of approved residential and commercial building plans in the record room for future reference. However, sewage water reportedly entered the facility after poor maintenance and alleged negligence, submerging hundreds of files and damaging important documents. Another important SBCA department, formerly known as Town Planning and now called Structure Planning, operates next to the affected record room. Sources said the flooding also damaged records dating back several years. According to sources, sewage had been accumulating in the area for several days, but the maintenance department failed to resolve the issue in time, resulting in damage to critical official records. Following a report by Express News, Additional Director General Farhan Qaiser took notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry against three officials. He directed authorities to submit a report within 24 hours and warned that officials found responsible for negligence would face suspension. The incident has also raised questions about oversight, as the SBCA Director General’s office is located only a short distance from the affected record room. However, no immediate directives reportedly came from the DG’s office. An SBCA spokesperson said the Director General was attending a meeting with Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah regarding improvements to the authority’s one-window operation. Citizens have expressed serious concern over the damage, saying the incident could undermine public confidence in the protection of property records. They have called on the Sindh government to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and proper preservation of such documents.
