Shai Hope anchors West Indies after Pakistan strike early

Shai Hope remained unbeaten on 89 as West Indies reached 303-7 at lunch on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Stadium.

Hope faced 174 deliveries and struck six boundaries and one six during a composed innings that helped the hosts recover from early pressure.

Pakistan made an important breakthrough soon after play resumed, removing well-set batter Kavem Hodge for 84. West Indies had started the day on 194-3 after rain severely disrupted the opening day.

Hodge’s dismissal came after he edged a delivery from Mohammad Ali towards second slip, where Salman Ali Agha completed the catch.

Pakistan’s bowlers had another chance shortly before the wicket when Hope was dropped in the slips by Azan Awais. The missed opportunity proved costly as Hope continued to strengthen West Indies’ position.

At the other end, Shamar Joseph provided valuable support to Hope. He was unbeaten on 23 from just 12 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six to keep the scoreboard moving quickly.

Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad also tested the West Indies batters during the morning session, but Hope held firm to guide the hosts through to lunch.

West Indies now have an opportunity to build a sizeable first-innings total, while Pakistan will look for quick wickets in the afternoon session to prevent the hosts from taking control of the Test.

Daily petrol prices trigger Senate debate over tra…

Islamabad: Pakistan’s new daily petroleum pricing system came under serious discussion in the Senate as lawmakers questioned whether the mechanism is providing relief to consumers or creating new challenges for the public and fuel dealers. The Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum reviewed the daily petrol price determination system and demanded clarity over why the government replaced the previous fortnightly price revision system with daily changes. The committee questioned the reasons behind the new policy and asked whether frequent price adjustments were helping ordinary citizens or increasing uncertainty in the fuel market. Federal Minister for Petroleum informed the committee that the government had removed political influence from the petroleum pricing process by giving the responsibility of setting prices to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), an independent regulator. He said the new system was introduced to make petroleum price decisions more transparent and based on market conditions. OGRA Chairman informed the committee that petrol prices are calculated through a seven day average of international Platts benchmark prices. He explained that instead of directly passing sudden changes in international oil markets to consumers, the seven day average spreads the impact over time. According to OGRA, the system helps reduce sudden price shocks, especially during international tensions and market uncertainty. Officials said the daily pricing mechanism also aims to discourage people from creating artificial shortages or making unfair profits through speculation. However, senators raised concerns about the effect of frequent price changes on citizens and businesses. The committee expressed concern over the high tax burden on petroleum products and questioned how increasing fuel costs affect the daily lives of ordinary people. Representatives of the Petroleum Dealers Association informed the committee that frequent price revisions were creating operational difficulties for fuel dealers. They said continuous price changes make business planning more difficult and require better coordination between authorities and dealers. The committee directed OGRA to consult all stakeholders, including petroleum dealers, and prepare practical recommendations to address their concerns. Members also stressed the need for greater use of technology in the petroleum supply chain to prevent fuel smuggling, adulteration and illegal storage. The committee said a stronger digital monitoring system could improve transparency and ensure consumers receive better quality fuel. Senator Umer Farooq chaired the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum, where members reviewed the new pricing system and related petroleum sector issues. The committee emphasized that petroleum pricing directly affects every citizen because fuel costs influence transportation, business expenses and prices of daily goods. Members said the government and regulators must ensure that any pricing system protects consumers while maintaining stability in the petroleum market. The committee directed OGRA to continue reviewing the mechanism and ensure that the interests of consumers remain the top priority.

PSX jumps 2,100 points on global optimism

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a strong rally at the start of trading on Wednesday, with investors returning to the market after signs of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East lifted global sentiment. The benchmark KSE-100 Index climbed by more than 2,100 points during the opening session, reflecting renewed optimism among market participants. By around 9:30am, the KSE-100 Index was trading at 179,216.20 points, registering a gain of 2,132.98 points, or 1.20 percent, compared with the previous close. Market analysts attributed the sharp recovery to encouraging remarks from officials in Qatar and the United States, which strengthened expectations that diplomatic efforts could help prevent further escalation of the Iran conflict. The improved global outlook encouraged investors to increase buying in key sectors of the local market. The rally was broad-based, with significant buying interest recorded in automobile assemblers, cement manufacturers, commercial banks, fertiliser companies, oil marketing firms, power generation companies and refineries. Among the major gainers were heavyweight stocks such as Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Mari Energies (MARI), Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL), Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), MCB Bank, Meezan Bank (MEBL) and United Bank Limited (UBL), all of which traded in positive territory during the early session. Investor confidence also received support from reports that Pakistan has approached China to refinance a $1.3 billion commercial loan. According to reports, the financing is expected to be finalised later this month after both sides complete negotiations on the terms and conditions. Market participants believe the move could help strengthen Pakistan’s external financing position and provide support to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The strong opening followed a volatile trading session on Tuesday, when the stock market closed significantly lower after investors engaged in widespread profit-taking. Although the KSE-100 Index had reached an intraday high of 178,768.83 points, selling pressure emerged later in the session as traders locked in gains following Monday’s impressive rally. Global financial markets also contributed to the positive sentiment. Asian equities advanced sharply after strong corporate earnings in the United States and continued enthusiasm for technology stocks pushed Wall Street to fresh record highs. Investors were further encouraged by hopes that diplomatic efforts would help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, easing concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies and putting downward pressure on oil prices and bond yields. Japan’s Nikkei index surged around 3 percent, while South Korea’s benchmark gained more than 4 percent. The broader MSCI Asia-Pacific Index outside Japan also posted strong gains, with Chinese blue-chip shares moving higher as investors welcomed improving market sentiment across the region. In the United States, stock futures remained stable after the S&P 500 reached another record high. However, trading in some technology stocks remained mixed. Chipmaker AMD declined in after-hours trading despite reporting earnings that exceeded analysts’ estimates, as investors had anticipated even stronger results. Concerns also persisted over the heavy capital spending required to support artificial intelligence infrastructure, with rising borrowing costs continuing to weigh on parts of the technology sector.

North Korean hackers develop AI tools for cyberattacks

SEOUL: A North Korean-linked hacking group has reportedly expanded its use of artificial intelligence to strengthen cyberattacks, automate operations and analyse stolen data. The group, identified as Kimsuky, has developed and collected a range of AI-related tools that could help its operators conduct attacks more efficiently, according to a South Korean cybersecurity company. The company said it discovered infrastructure linked to Kimsuky containing several programs designed to run and manage artificial intelligence models locally. These included Ollama, GPT4All and Msty. The hackers also appeared to be using retrieval-augmented generation technology. The system can help AI models search and process large collections of documents. Researchers said the use of locally operated AI models could allow the group to analyse sensitive information without sending data to external AI services. This could give hackers greater control over stolen material and reduce their reliance on third-party platforms. The investigation also uncovered AI agent development frameworks, speech-to-text software and an AI-assisted coding tool called Cursor. According to the cybersecurity firm, the findings indicate that Kimsuky may be moving beyond the simple use of generative AI for creating phishing messages. The group could now be seeking to integrate existing AI models into different stages of its cyber operations. These may include malware development, stolen-data analysis and attack automation. Researchers also identified documents related to finance and cryptocurrency on the infrastructure. Some of the files appeared to have been generated using artificial intelligence. The documents were designed to look like legitimate investment reports and other professional workplace material. Such files could potentially be used as decoys or to make malicious campaigns appear more credible. The findings have not been independently verified. However, cybersecurity researchers and government agencies have repeatedly linked North Korean state-backed groups to international cyber operations. North Korean cyber units have been accused of conducting espionage campaigns, stealing money and targeting cryptocurrency-related assets. Authorities in the United States and South Korea have previously warned about the activities of such groups. Kimsuky has long been associated with cyber-espionage operations targeting governments, organisations and individuals. The group has also been accused of gathering intelligence to support North Korea’s strategic interests. The latest findings point to a growing role for artificial intelligence in cyber operations. Security researchers have warned that AI tools can make phishing campaigns more convincing and help attackers process information and develop malicious software more quickly.

Polling for the second phase of the 2026 general elections to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly concluded on Sunday, with vote counting now underway across the contested constituencies. The election was held for eight constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in different cities of Pakistan. Polling in LA-27 Muzaffarabad was postponed due to bad weather and landslides, while clashes in LA-31 left a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) worker dead. In Khawra, Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Salahuddin Junejo and two party workers were injured in a firing incident. Voting began at 8:00 a.m. and was originally scheduled to end at 5:00 p.m. However, the AJK Election Commission extended polling by one hour in the Muzaffarabad Division due to a high voter turnout, allowing voters to cast their ballots until 6:00 p.m. More than 1.2 million registered voters were eligible to vote in the second phase of the elections. A total of 208 candidates contested nine constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division, which has 809,621 registered voters, while 143 candidates competed for the 12 refugee seats. Authorities established 1,483 polling stations across the Muzaffarabad region, with heavy security deployed at highly sensitive locations. Polling Postponed in LA-27 Although elections were scheduled in nine constituencies of Muzaffarabad Division, polling was held in only eight. The Election Commission postponed voting in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-II (Lachhrat) after severe weather and landslides disrupted access to several polling stations. Fresh polling in the constituency has been scheduled for August 4. Voting in some constituencies began late, while the PPP accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of electoral irregularities. The party’s election cell submitted formal complaints to the Chief Election Commissioner. Clashes and Violence A PPP worker, identified as Mushtaq Shah, was killed during clashes in LA-31. In Khawra, PPP MNA Salahuddin Junejo, who represents NA-210 Sanghar-II, suffered a gunshot wound to his arm during a firing incident. Hackers target Wall Street firms in phone-based cy…

NEW YORK: Hackers seeking ransom have targeted dozens of major US financial institutions and businesses using a surprisingly simple tactic — posing as IT help desk employees and tricking staff into handing over passwords and authentication codes. According to Google and internet intelligence data reviewed by Reuters, the campaign targeted prominent private equity and financial firms, including Blackstone, Bridgewater Associates, Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, KKR, TPG, CME Group, Clearlake Capital and Moody’s. Google said the cybercriminals operate under several names, including Redact, Pink, Falcon and Helix. The technology giant said some companies targeted during the campaign had paid ransoms, although it did not identify those businesses. Reuters was also unable to determine which companies were successfully compromised. The hackers reportedly created websites designed specifically for individual companies. Employees were then contacted by phone, sometimes through calls that appeared to originate from their organisation’s legitimate IT help desk. The attackers allegedly told employees that they needed to urgently update their passkeys or multifactor authentication credentials. Victims were then directed to malicious websites using names designed to look legitimate, such as those containing phrases like “passkey helpdesk” or “secure passkey”. Once an employee entered their credentials, the hackers could obtain an authentication code in real time, allowing them to take control of the account while remaining on the phone with the victim. Austin Larsen, a principal threat analyst with Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, said the technique was not especially sophisticated but remained highly effective. Cybersecurity experts said the campaign demonstrates that human behaviour remains one of the biggest vulnerabilities for even heavily protected organisations. Lee Clark of the Retail and Hospitality ISAC compared the tactic to persuading a security guard to open a heavily protected gate. Google said the attackers had increasingly focused on private equity firms, law firms and financial ratings agencies because they may hold sensitive information that companies would be willing to protect through ransom payments. Reuters identified 72 malicious websites listed in Google’s report and linked several of them to specific companies using internet intelligence platforms. Google cautioned that while the infrastructure indicated attempted intrusions, not every attack was necessarily successful. The campaign appears to have affected a broader range of industries. Data reviewed by Reuters showed that hackers created digital traps targeting more than 200 companies during a five-week period, including Uber, Zillow and Levi Strauss, along with law firms such as Paul Hastings and Greenberg Traurig. The hacking group’s shifting aliases have also complicated efforts to identify those behind the attacks. Google said the various names appeared connected through shared infrastructure, but acknowledged that important questions about the hackers’ identities and relationships remain unanswered. The latest campaign has heightened concern across Wall Street, highlighting how convincing phone calls and basic social engineering can bypass sophisticated cybersecurity systems and expose highly valuable corporate accounts.
