LHC says illness, physical weakness can justify ba…

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ruled that illness, physical weakness, old age or disability can serve as valid legal grounds for granting post-arrest bail, issuing an important judgment on bail applications filed on medical grounds.

Justice Amjad Rafiq issued a detailed written verdict while deciding the post-arrest bail petition of Dr Iftikhar Ahmed, who is suffering from Parkinsonism, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and physical independence.

The court observed that if a prison medical report confirms that an accused is physically weak, there is no need to separately assess the severity of the illness. It held that physical weakness itself may be sufficient to justify consideration for bail.

According to the judgment, illness and physical weakness are separate legal grounds for granting bail. The court noted that imprisonment can cause greater hardship for elderly, physically weak and disabled individuals, and the justice system should protect them from unnecessary physical suffering.

The LHC further stated that the bail application had not been filed on the merits of the criminal case but solely because of the accused’s deteriorating physical condition. The prison medical report confirmed that Dr Iftikhar Ahmed was suffering from Parkinsonism, a disease that gradually limits a person’s physical abilities and independence.

Rejecting the prosecution’s argument, the court ruled that the mere fact an accused is receiving medical treatment in prison cannot, by itself, be used as a reason to deny bail.

The judgment also referred to principles of Islamic law and international judicial precedents, stating that sick, elderly and vulnerable individuals are entitled to special legal protection and humane treatment.

The Lahore High Court granted post-arrest bail to Dr Iftikhar Ahmed against surety bonds of Rs1 million. The court directed the accused not to influence prosecution witnesses, to surrender his passport and not to leave the court’s jurisdiction without prior permission.

Dr Iftikhar Ahmed has been in jail since March 2025 in a case registered at Sabzazar Police Station, where he is accused of administering an incorrect injection to a citizen’s son. The criminal proceedings will continue in accordance with the law.

Rakhi Sawant gets emotional about her Pakistani fans

Rakhi Sawant has always been one of Indian entertainment’s most unfiltered personalities, and a recent interview with BBC Hindi has given her fans on both sides of the border a moment to genuinely pause and reflect. In the interview, the actress and digital influencer spoke with visible emotion about her Pakistani fans, delivering a remarkably candid account of a connection that has quietly shaped her personal life in ways she had perhaps not expected. Sawant, who now follows Islam and has spoken openly about her affection for Muslims, did not approach the subject diplomatically or with the kind of measured language public figures typically deploy when navigating Indo-Pakistani sentiment. She spoke from personal experience, and the honesty of what she said has resonated widely. “They love me a lot,” she said, speaking of her Pakistani fans. “We Pakistanis and Hindus share a love-and-hate relationship, but whenever something happens to me, Pakistanis reach out first. Sometimes I have a fever, and no one from India shows up, but they come and take me to the hospital.” The admission was striking in its specificity. She was not speaking in generalities about cultural warmth or neighbourly affection. She was describing concrete acts of care at moments of genuine vulnerability, people showing up when she was unwell, accompanying her to hospital, filling a gap that others had left empty. She continued with equal candour, acknowledging the political narrative that frames the two countries as adversaries while making clear that her personal experience simply did not match that framing. “I know they are our enemy, our country’s enemy, but what’s true is true,” she said. “They love me a lot. I am just a neighbour residing in this building, and as neighbours, they are always there for me.” The online reaction to the interview has been overwhelmingly warm and has prompted a broader conversation that goes well beyond Sawant herself. Both Pakistani and Indian viewers flooded the comments to express agreement with the sentiment she was articulating. The most consistent thread running through the responses was the distinction between the political relationship that governments maintain and the human relationships that ordinary people choose to build across that same divide. Commenters from both countries wrote that neither people were each other’s real enemies, and that it was politicians who constructed and maintained the hostility that defined the official relationship between India and Pakistan. People on the ground, many argued, wanted something different entirely. Rakhi Sawant’s emotional honesty in this interview did not resolve any political realities. But it gave voice to something that is rarely said plainly enough in either country: that the warmth that exists between people when it is allowed to breathe is real, and sometimes shows up most clearly when someone needs to be taken to hospital and someone else simply decides to come.

Ariana Grande explains decision to step back from …

Ariana Grande has finally addressed her decision to step back from public life, reassuring fans that the move is about finding balance and protecting her well-being rather than reacting to recent criticism. During an emotional speech at her Eternal Sunshine Tour stop in Chicago, the singer explained that her upcoming break had been planned long before recent public discussions about her appearance. Grande said the decision was not a response to online negativity but part of a personal commitment to creating a healthier and more balanced future.  The Grammy-winning artist told fans that the tour has been one of the most healing experiences of her career. Speaking from the stage, she thanked concertgoers for their unwavering support and said their love has carried her through challenging moments. Grande emphasized that stepping away from the spotlight is an empowering choice that allows her to prioritize herself after years of nonstop work.  Grande has spent the past several years balancing multiple high-profile projects, including new music, a worldwide tour and her acting career. Earlier this year, she admitted in an interview with Vogue Japan that taking a break would probably be healthy because she has rarely slowed down since becoming a global star as a teenager. She said her goal for the next chapter of her life is to find more balance than she had during the previous 15 years.  Her representatives recently confirmed that she will step back from public-facing appearances after the Eternal Sunshine Tour concludes in September. They explained that Grande wants to finish the tour on a positive note before taking a well-earned break from constant public visibility. The statement also confirmed that she has withdrawn from the planned West End production of Sunday in the Park with George, with producers expressing their full support for her decision.  Despite the temporary pause, Grande has made it clear that she is not saying goodbye to music or acting. She has previously described music as her “lifeline” and has repeatedly said she hopes to continue exploring both creative passions in the future.  For now, Ariana Grande is choosing rest over relentless schedules. Her latest message highlights the growing importance of setting boundaries, proving that even one of the world’s biggest pop stars recognizes the value of protecting personal well-being while looking ahead to the next chapter of her career.

Colombia’s new president takes office with hardline pledge on security and economy

Abelardo De La Espriella has been sworn in as Colombia’s president in Cali, breaking with the tradition of holding the inauguration ceremony at the congressional building in Bogotá. The 48-year-old former lawyer and ally of US President Donald Trump won June’s runoff election on a platform focused on hardline security measures, significant cuts to state spending, and the expansion of national energy production. During his inaugural speech at the Pichincha Battalion military base, De La Espriella declared that peace negotiations with armed groups are completely exhausted. He stated that criminal syndicates must either submit to the rule of law or face a direct response from security forces. To combat drug trafficking, he announced plans to resume aerial spraying to eradicate coca crops and confirmed that Colombia will join the US-led Shield of the Americas programme. On the economic front, De La Espriella pledged to freeze public spending and simplify the tax regime to stimulate private investment, while proposing to reduce the size of the state by up to 40%. He confirmed that established social programmes would remain intact. To boost declining reserves, the new administration plans to expand oil and gas exploration, including the use of responsible fracking, alongside efforts to strengthen state-owned energy firm Ecopetrol. De La Espriella’s inauguration reflects a wider political shift across Latin America. Incoming Finance Minister Miguel Gomez noted a fiscal deficit between 7% and 8% of GDP, indicating that initial governance will depend on executive decrees whilst navigating a divided congress. Meanwhile, opposition figures led by Senator Ivan Cepeda organized peaceful demonstrations in Barranquilla, pledging to defend democratic institutions and monitor potential rollbacks of social protections.
