“Forgotten by everyone?” Talha Anjum raises troubling questions over hostages

Pakistani rapper Talha Anjum has once again highlighted the plight of Pakistani sailors reportedly being held hostage by Somali pirates, saying that the issue has been forgotten by both the media and the public.

In an Instagram story shared on Thursday, Anjum criticised the authorities’ response and said the government had failed to protect Pakistani citizens, whether inside the country or abroad. He expressed concern that the families of the affected sailors were still waiting for answers and support.

“The media forgot about these families and sadly, so did the people of Pakistan,” Anjum said while calling for urgent action to secure the release of the hostages.

The ship was reportedly hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia in April, sparking concern and calls for efforts to bring the Pakistani sailors home. Anjum had previously raised his voice on the issue, saying he personally knew one of the crew members and considered him like a brother.

At the time, the rapper criticised what he described as a lack of seriousness from authorities and urged officials to take immediate steps for the safe return of the stranded sailors.

.

Several other Pakistani celebrities, including Mahira Khan, Sabeena Farooq, and Bushra Ansari, have also spoken publicly in support of the affected sailors and their families.

The families of the crew members continue to await further developments as calls grow for renewed efforts to secure their safe release.

CBFC orders cuts in Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 b…

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi’s much-awaited film Awarapan 2 has officially received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), but only after several significant edits were made. The film has been awarded a U/A 16+ certificate, allowing viewers aged 16 and above to watch it under parental guidance. The CBFC approved the film on August 5, 2026, with a final runtime of 140 minutes and 20 seconds. However, before granting certification, the board instructed the filmmakers to implement changes at nine different points throughout the movie. According to reports, the CBFC asked the makers to tone down violent sequences, remove certain objectionable words from both the audio and subtitles, and include mandatory health warnings related to smoking and drug use. The board also directed the filmmakers to display the Hindi title prominently and ensure that anti-smoking messages remain visible during scenes featuring tobacco use. In addition, the certification body required a warning related to child trafficking to be included in the film. Some action scenes were shortened to reduce the intensity of violence, while one particular sequence was reportedly cut by nearly 50 percent. A scene involving drug inhalation was also modified to comply with certification guidelines. The end credits were adjusted to better align with the background music. Overall, approximately four minutes of footage were removed, while another 20 seconds of content were altered. Despite these edits, the film’s official runtime remains unchanged at 140 minutes and 20 seconds. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 stars Emraan Hashmi alongside Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi in key roles. The film serves as the sequel to the 2007 hit Awarapan and continues the emotional storytelling of the original while introducing a darker, revenge-driven narrative. Produced by Vishesh Bhatt, the sequel also reunites composer Mithoon and lyricist Sayeed Quadri. Fans can look forward to refreshed versions of the iconic songs “To Phir Aao” and “Tera Mera Rishta,” along with several new tracks created specifically for the film. With the required CBFC changes now completed, Awarapan 2 is set for a theatrical release on August 14, 2026. The film is expected to attract both longtime fans of the original and new audiences eager to see Emraan Hashmi return to one of his most memorable franchises.

Pakistan requests $10bn US foreign exchange stabil…

Pakistan has requested a $10 billion foreign exchange stabilization facility from the United States in an effort to strengthen its economy and improve its external financial position. The proposed facility is expected to help increase the country’s foreign exchange reserves, ease pressure on the Pakistani rupee, and reduce dependence on emergency financial assistance from international lenders. According to reports, the Pakistani government has submitted a formal proposal to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent seeking a five-year bilateral Exchange Stabilization Support Facility. If approved, the financial arrangement could provide Pakistan with greater economic stability at a time when the country continues to face external financing challenges. The proposed fund is designed to support Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves, which remain under pressure despite recent improvements in the country’s economic outlook. Stronger reserves would help stabilize the rupee, improve investor confidence, and provide the government with greater flexibility in managing external debt repayments. The request comes after Pakistan’s reported diplomatic efforts during the Iran conflict. According to the report, Islamabad played a facilitating role in communication between Tehran and Washington. The diplomatic engagement is believed to have enhanced Pakistan’s strategic importance and may have contributed to closer economic discussions with the United States. If Washington approves the request, Pakistan could reduce its dependence on short-term financial support from multilateral institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The facility would also help the country better manage future external financing needs while maintaining stability in the foreign exchange market. Pakistan is currently implementing wide-ranging economic reforms under the IMF’s $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF). The programme requires the government to increase tax revenues, reduce public spending, improve fiscal discipline, and introduce structural reforms aimed at strengthening the economy. The country narrowly avoided a sovereign default in 2023 after securing a $3 billion IMF emergency programme. That support was later followed by the approval of the larger $7 billion EFF programme. Although the reforms have improved economic indicators, Pakistan still relies heavily on external borrowing, financial assistance from friendly countries, and the rollover of existing loans to meet its financing requirements. Economic experts believe that a US-backed stabilization facility would provide a significant boost to Pakistan’s financial position. It could strengthen foreign exchange reserves, support currency stability, improve investor confidence, and reduce the need for repeated emergency borrowing.

Pakistan invites foreign investors as UK peer prai…

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has assured foreign investors of full government support, saying Pakistan is ready to facilitate investment and provide opportunities across different sectors. Naqvi made the remarks during a meeting with British House of Lords member Lord Zamir Choudrey in Islamabad on Saturday. The interior minister said Pakistan has significant investment potential and that the government wants to create an environment where foreign investors can operate with greater confidence. He assured investors that all possible facilities would be provided to support their business activities in the country. The discussion also covered regional peace and stability. Naqvi said Pakistan was continuing its efforts to promote lasting peace in the region. He expressed optimism that the country’s diplomatic and peace initiatives would produce positive results. Lord Zamir Choudrey appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to contribute to regional stability. He also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts to promote peace. Choudrey said the government’s policies were helping create new opportunities for investment in Pakistan. The meeting comes as Islamabad seeks to strengthen economic ties with international partners while promoting Pakistan as an attractive destination for foreign investment. Pakistan has also been increasing cooperation with China on security and counterterrorism matters. Earlier this month, Naqvi met Chinese Minister of State for Public Security and Special Service Bureau chief Ling Zhifeng at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in internal security. Their discussions included border management, illegal immigration and efforts against drug trafficking. Meanwhile, security concerns surrounding Chinese nationals working in Pakistan remain a major issue. The CPEC Secretariat has decided to purchase a new bulletproof vehicle costing Rs95 million to strengthen security arrangements for Chinese citizens. The vehicle will reportedly be a 3,500cc Toyota Land Cruiser. It will be added to the existing fleet of security vehicles used for the protection of Chinese nationals. Government departments have also acquired or are seeking additional bulletproof vehicles and helicopters for security purposes. Officials have said Chinese citizens face significant security risks in Pakistan. As a result, they are generally restricted from travelling in ordinary, non-bulletproof vehicles. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the protection of Chinese nationals is a key responsibility of the Pakistani government. The purchase also highlights the security challenges linked to major China-Pakistan economic projects. The government is balancing efforts to attract more foreign investment with measures aimed at improving the security of international investors and workers.
