Shehbaz denounces Houthi attacks in call with MBS

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and strongly condemned the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, reaffirming Pakistan’s full support for the Kingdom.

During the conversation, the prime minister described the attacks as unacceptable and said they violated international law while posing a serious threat to freedom of navigation and regional stability.

Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan stands firmly with Saudi Arabia during the current security situation. He conveyed the country’s complete solidarity with the Saudi leadership and people, stressing that Pakistan remains committed to supporting the Kingdom in safeguarding regional peace and security.

The prime minister also said he conveyed the support of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the entire Pakistani nation, expressing unity with Saudi Arabia at what he described as a critical time.

According to the prime minister, both leaders agreed to maintain close coordination on issues affecting regional peace and maritime security. They emphasised the importance of ensuring the safe and uninterrupted movement of commercial shipping through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, two of the world’s most important international trade routes.

The two sides also agreed to continue working together to promote stability across the wider Middle East and support efforts aimed at protecting lawful maritime commerce from security threats.

The conversation comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent attacks targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Karachi court acquits Anmol alias Pinky in three d…

KARACHI: An Additional District and Sessions Court in Karachi has acquitted Anmol alias Pinky in three drug cases registered at Gizri Police Station. The court announced the decision on Thursday after hearing arguments from the defence. Pinky was arrested by Karachi police in May during a joint operation with a civil agency at an apartment in the Garden area. Police had accused her of operating an organised narcotics supply network in Karachi. Investigators alleged that the network was involved in processing and distributing cocaine and had links with other major cities, including Lahore and Islamabad. According to police, the three cases against Pinky were registered at Gizri Police Station in 2020, 2021 and 2022. She had remained a fugitive in the cases before her arrest. During Thursday’s hearing, Pinky’s defence counsel argued that two other accused persons in the cases had already been acquitted. The lawyer told the court that co-accused Ali and Fehmida were acquitted in 2024. He argued that Pinky had subsequently been implicated on the basis of statements attributed to the acquitted co-accused. The defence maintained that after the acquittal of the two co-accused, there was insufficient legal basis to convict Pinky in the cases. The court accepted the defence arguments and acquitted her in all three cases. Before her acquittal, investigators had made several allegations about Pinky’s alleged role in the narcotics trade. Police claimed she supplied drugs to customers in affluent areas of Karachi, including DHA and Clifton. Investigators also alleged that she personally prepared cocaine and used female riders and online platforms to facilitate deliveries. Police further claimed that her alleged network extended beyond Karachi to cities including Lahore and Islamabad. During interrogation, investigators attributed statements to Pinky regarding the quality and sale of cocaine. Police alleged that two categories of cocaine were being sold through the network at different prices. Pinky, however, made separate allegations during interrogation. She claimed she was being pressured to name politicians and members of the entertainment industry. She also alleged that she had been subjected to physical mistreatment during questioning and accused an investigation officer of threatening her.

WhatsApp web gets voice and video calling

WhatsApp has introduced a major update that brings voice and video calling to WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through their web browsers. Previously, these features were available only on the mobile app and the native desktop application. With this latest expansion, WhatsApp Web now offers a more complete communication experience, making it easier for users to stay connected without switching devices. The update significantly enhances the web version by introducing a dedicated Calls tab, where users can view their recent call history, access favorite contacts, and start voice or video calls with ease. WhatsApp Web also now supports features such as screen sharing and emoji reactions during calls, bringing it closer to the experience already available on the desktop application. According to Meta, these improvements are designed to make conversations more convenient for both personal and professional use. Whether users are catching up with friends and family or participating in work meetings, the new calling features aim to provide a smoother and more interactive experience. One of the most notable additions is the ability to transfer an ongoing call between devices without disconnecting. For example, a user who answers a call on a computer can seamlessly continue the conversation on a smartphone without interruption. This feature offers greater flexibility for people who frequently switch between devices during the day. WhatsApp has also introduced waiting rooms for group calls. When creating a call link, hosts can enable the “Require approval to join” option, allowing them to decide who can enter the call. This added layer of control is expected to be especially useful for business meetings, online classes, and large group discussions. The latest update also improves call quality by introducing background noise suppression, helping reduce unwanted sounds during voice and video calls made in noisy environments. In addition, Meta has enhanced video performance by enabling high-definition (HD) video streaming within the first few seconds of a call, providing users with a clearer and sharper video experience much sooner than before. The announcement comes as Meta continues to expand WhatsApp beyond traditional messaging. The company is also developing WhatsApp usernames, which will allow users to connect and make calls without relying solely on phone numbers, offering greater privacy and convenience. The new calling features are being rolled out gradually to WhatsApp users around the world. As the update reaches more devices, users will gain access to a more powerful communication platform that combines messaging, voice calls, video conferencing, and collaboration tools in a single service.

Jeff Bezos throws weight behind $2.6B AI startup fixing the chip material crunch

Jeff Bezos has placed his bet on CuspAI, an artificial intelligence startup working to discover and design advanced materials for the next generation of computer chips. The investment aims squarely at the material shortage behind the ongoing chip crisis that has rattled the tech industry over the past several months. This is not  CuspAI’s first big funding win. Back in July, the company closed a $450 million Series B round, pushing its valuation to $2.6 billion. That round pulled in heavyweight backers, including Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Meta. CuspAI was founded in 2024 with a much narrower focus. Originally, the company built AI tools to identify and test materials for water purification and carbon capture projects. Since then, its mission has grown considerably. By expanding into AI infrastructure and chip materials, the startup now positions itself as a possible fix during a period of serious supply chain strain. One of CuspAI’s key advantages lies in finding substitutes. The company’s AI can search for alternative materials that mimic the properties of scarce elements like tantalum, gallium, and iridium. These elements are becoming harder to source as demand climbs, particularly with the explosion of AI infrastructure worldwide. The International Energy Agency has already flagged concerns that data centre demand for gallium could outpace supply within the next few years. Adding to the pressure, rising geopolitical tension between the US and China over rare earth minerals continues to complicate global supply chains. Analysts have pointed to this rift as a growing risk factor for tech manufacturers everywhere. Beyond securing fresh funding, CuspAI has also launched something bigger: the AI Materials Foundry. This initiative brings together more than 45 major industry players under one coalition, including tech giants like Nvidia, Samsung, Meta, and Hyundai Motor Group. The goal is to pool resources and expertise as the industry races to solve its materials bottleneck. With Bezos now backing the effort directly, CuspAI’s profile in the AI and semiconductor space is only expected to grow. As chip shortages continue to challenge manufacturers worldwide, the company’s approach of using AI to hunt for alternative materials could prove critical in keeping production on track.

Ukrainian drone strike hits major Russian grain terminals in Black Sea port

A massive Ukrainian drone and missile strike targeted the strategic Russian port of Novorossiysk overnight, damaging two major grain export terminals and striking key naval assets in the Black Sea. Local officials reported that three people, including an eight-year-old child, were killed and 24 others were injured in the attack, which prompted an emergency declaration in the city. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the assault as a unique operation utilizing rockets, jet drones, and naval drones. Military officials in Kyiv later confirmed that four Russian warships, including two frigates, were damaged during the strike. Novorossiysk became the primary hub for Russia’s Black Sea fleet after Ukrainian attacks previously forced Russian naval forces to relocate from Sevastopol in occupied Crimea. The damage to the export hubs led the Russian agriculture ministry to begin rerouting cargo flows toward alternative maritime routes in the Baltic and Caspian Seas. The barrage comes amid intensified military exchanges in the region, following overnight Russian missile and glide bomb attacks that killed at least 11 civilians in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia.

Sahibzada Farhan’s century powers Pakistan Blues to big win

MULTAN: Sahibzada Farhan produced a composed century as Pakistan Blues chased down 213 with ease, defeating Pakistan Gold by six wickets in the second match of the National Champions Cup 2026 at Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
