Sahibzada Farhan’s century powers Pakistan Blues to big win

MULTAN: Sahibzada Farhan produced a composed century as Pakistan Blues chased down 213 with ease, defeating Pakistan Gold by six wickets in the second match of the National Champions Cup 2026 at Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Farhan’s unbeaten-looking control throughout the chase proved decisive as Pakistan Blues reached their target in just 41 overs, losing only four wickets and underlining their dominance with both bat and ball.

Opening with Maaz Sadaqat, Farhan helped Blues make a steady start, adding 30 runs for the first wicket inside five overs. Maaz contributed nine before departing, but Farhan quickly found another reliable partner in Mohammad Faiq.

The pair added 55 runs for the second wicket, taking Blues to 85 in 16 overs. Faiq struck four boundaries during his 35-ball 30 before leaving the crease.

Tayyab Tahir then joined Farhan and the two maintained the pressure on Pakistan Gold’s bowlers. Their 64-run partnership took Blues close to the finishing line, with Tahir scoring 35 from 41 balls, including three fours.

At 149-3 after 29.1 overs, Farhan reached his ninth List-A century, providing the highlight of a commanding individual performance. The right-hander eventually made 102 from 101 deliveries, smashing nine fours and two sixes.

Rohail Nazir and Irfan Khan then completed the job, remaining unbeaten on 21 and nine respectively. Mohammad Imran was Pakistan Gold’s most successful bowler, taking two wickets.

Earlier, Pakistan Gold struggled after captain Shaheen Afridi elected to bat first. Hasan Ali and Sufyan Moqim led a powerful Blues bowling effort, sharing eight wickets between them.

Pakistan Gold began positively through Shamyl Hussain and Saad Khan, but Saad fell for nine. Shamyl then combined with Kamran Ghulam for a 75-run partnership before Moqim ended the stand by removing Shamyl for a well-made 50 off 47 balls.

Kamran continued to fight, adding 36 with Haider Ali. He top-scored with 63 from 84 deliveries, while Haider struck 44 from 53 balls.

However, Pakistan Gold collapsed from 136-3 to 174-6 in just 3.2 overs as Hasan and Moqim tore through the middle order. The Gold innings eventually ended at 212 in 45.3 overs.

Moqim and Hasan claimed four wickets apiece, while Arafat Minhas added two.

With Farhan’s century completing a convincing chase, Pakistan Blues have made an emphatic statement in the early stages of the Champions Cup.

    Afghanistan exports Black Dimension Stone to US

    Afghanistan has exported a shipment of its natural Black Dimension Stone to the United States for the first time, marking a significant step for the country’s mining and export sector. According to Afghan media reports, the shipment is valued at around $100,000. The export is being viewed as an important milestone in Afghanistan’s efforts to expand its presence in international mineral markets. The shipment was arranged by a private Afghan company. However, officials have not disclosed the name of the exporting company or the identity of the American buyer. The exported stone was extracted from a mine located in the Zindajan district of Herat province, an area known for its mineral resources. Zindajan lies approximately 40 kilometres west of Herat city, close to the border with Iran. Natural Black Dimension Stone is widely used in the construction and architectural industries for flooring, wall cladding, monuments and decorative projects because of its durability and polished appearance. The latest export highlights Afghanistan’s growing interest in developing its mining sector, which is considered one of the country’s most valuable economic resources. The country possesses significant deposits of marble, gemstones, precious metals and other industrial minerals that have the potential to boost exports and generate foreign exchange. Officials hope that increased international demand for Afghan minerals will encourage further investment in the mining industry and create new economic opportunities

    New US opportunities emerge for Pakistani nurses

    Pakistani nurses and other healthcare professionals could soon have better access to professional opportunities in the United States. A new initiative is being developed to strengthen medical education and workforce development in Pakistan. It also aims to help meet the growing demand for trained healthcare professionals in the US. The American Pakistan Education Foundation and the Pakistan Education Foundation are set to sign a memorandum of understanding in New York. The agreement will establish a framework for cooperation between the two organizations. It will focus on education, professional preparation, training, certification and qualification requirements. The initiative will also explore suitable pathways for qualified Pakistani healthcare professionals to access professional opportunities in the United States. The organizations plan to build stronger links with hospitals, healthcare systems, educational institutions and professional organizations in the US. The American Pakistan Education Foundation is a US-based nonprofit organization. It works on education, healthcare workforce development, professional training and community-focused initiatives in both countries. The project to create professional opportunities for Pakistani nurses was launched with support from New York State Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos. Members of the foundation’s board have already visited Pakistan twice. During the visits, they met relevant stakeholders and discussed ways to strengthen nursing education and the wider healthcare workforce. The discussions also focused on professional training and the development of medical skills. The delegation examined opportunities to expand institutional cooperation between Pakistan and the United States. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Education Foundation has launched an NCLEX nurse placement programme. The initiative is aimed at helping Pakistani registered nurses prepare for international licensing. A nationwide registration campaign was conducted under the programme. A total of 2,759 candidates registered. After a detailed screening and selection process, 300 eligible nurses were selected for training. More than 80 nurses have so far obtained NCLEX-related licensing credentials. They are now prepared to pursue international professional opportunities. More than 220 additional nurses are currently progressing through the examination process. The programme has also helped candidates who face financial difficulties. They have been able to prepare for the costly licensing examination without travelling abroad. The new memorandum is expected to provide a stronger basis for connecting qualified Pakistani healthcare professionals with potential employers in the US. The American Pakistan Education Foundation plans to establish links with hospitals, healthcare networks, nursing facilities, universities and professional organizations. These institutions could provide employment, training and partnership opportunities for qualified professionals. The two organizations also intend to strengthen nursing and medical education. They will explore professional development programmes for teachers and healthcare workers. Professional exchange programmes could also be developed. Scholarships and educational assistance may be considered as part of future cooperation. The Pakistan Education Foundation will identify nurses and other healthcare professionals with suitable educational and professional backgrounds. It will also assist candidates interested in further education, professional development and potential employment opportunities in the United States. Support could include exam preparation, professional training and assistance with certification and documentation. The proposed cooperation may also involve universities, nursing schools, hospitals, training institutions and professional organizations. Joint educational programmes could be developed for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Existing programmes could also receive additional support. A joint working group may be established to oversee implementation of the memorandum and develop further cooperation between the two organizations. Officials involved in the initiative have welcomed the development. They said the project could create stronger institutional links between Pakistan and the United States. The initiative is also being viewed as a step towards expanding international career opportunities for Pakistani healthcare workers.

    LAHORE: Thousands of teachers and employees of the University of the Punjab took to the streets on Wednesday in a major protest organized by the Joint Action Committee, demanding the resolution of their longstanding grievances and payment of outstanding dues. The demonstration was attended by office-bearers of the Punjab University Academic Staff Association and the Punjab University Administrative & Technical Staff Association, along with a large number of faculty members and university employees. Addressing the protesters, Joint Action Committee Chairman Prof. Dr. Sardar Asghar Iqbal accused the university administration of favouring a particular group, alleging that the practice had adversely affected the institution’s financial and administrative affairs. Other faculty members, including Prof. Dr. Abdul Rehman Khan Niazi, Prof. Dr. Muqeet Javed, Dr. Abrar Zafar and Prof. Dr. Kamran Mirza, also participated in the protest. Joint Action Committee President and President of the Punjab University Administrative & Technical Staff Association Chaudhry Basharat Mahmood said employees had been protesting peacefully for around one and a half years, but the administration had failed to address their concerns. He said the employees were now compelled to intensify their protest. According to the announced plan, university offices will observe a two-hour work suspension every day, with employees wearing black armbands as a sign of protest. A protest rally will also be organized every Wednesday. Mahmood warned that the protesters could block the Campus Bridge if the administration failed to take their demands seriously. He also announced plans for demonstrations outside the Punjab chief minister’s office and on the GT Road near the university’s Gujranwala and Jhelum campuses. The protesters called for the immediate resolution of teachers’ and employees’ issues and payment of all outstanding dues. They also demanded the removal of DG Rehan Sadiq Sheikh, alleging that his conduct toward employees and role in administrative matters had contributed to the university’s deteriorating financial and administrative situation. The Joint Action Committee further called on the Punjab government to conduct a forensic audit of the university’s financial and administrative affairs to ensure transparency and accountability. Tayyab Ijaz Khan Swati, Tanveer Awan, Hammad Butt, Azhar Iqbal Baloch and former association president Nasir Rehmat were among the other speakers who addressed the gathering. The Joint Action Committee said its protest campaign would continue until the administration accepts and addresses the protesters’ demands.

    PTI announces two-million march on Islamabad

    PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will hold a major march towards Islamabad on September 27, claiming that two million people will participate in the demonstration. Speaking at the launch of a large-scale tree plantation campaign in Spin Khak, Nowshera, Afridi said PTI would continue its political struggle despite pressure and challenges. He maintained that government positions, wealth and political power were not the party’s ultimate objectives. According to him, PTI remained committed to the political vision of its founding chairman, Imran Khan. Afridi said the party had entered politics to promote the rule of law and uphold the Constitution. He added that the struggle would continue until these principles were achieved. The chief minister urged residents of Spin Khak and surrounding areas to participate in the September 27 gathering and support the party’s political campaign. During the event, Afridi also highlighted the provincial government’s environmental initiatives. He said authorities had initially set a target of planting 1.4 million saplings across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in one day, but the campaign ultimately resulted in around 1.7 million saplings being planted. He praised the Forest Department for exceeding the plantation target and said public resources were being invested in projects designed to benefit future generations. Afridi said communities in forest areas were also receiving financial benefits from forest-related income. He cited Garhi Chandan as an example, where local residents had received Rs70 million from such revenues. Referring to recent flash floods and cloudbursts, the chief minister directed authorities to expand plantation activities across the province. He said increasing forest cover could contribute to environmental protection and help address climate-related challenges. He also instructed the Forest Department to establish tourist huts in forest regions to promote tourism. Afridi suggested encouraging international visitors to plant trees during their visits, with the trees registered in their names
