Elon Musk aims to release AI-generated ‘The Odyssey’ in 2026

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to produce a full-length artificial intelligence-generated adaptation of “The Odyssey” before the end of 2026, signalling a major step in the use of AI technology in the film industry.

Musk shared the announcement on his social media platform X, where he said that Grok Imagine, the AI video-generation system developed by his company xAI, would create a complete feature film based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

According to Musk, the project will aim to remain historically accurate while staying faithful to the original literary work. He said the AI-generated film would present the classic story in a way that reflects Homer’s vision.

The announcement came shortly after the successful release of filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s live-action adaptation of The Odyssey, which performed strongly at the global box office during its opening weekend. Musk has previously expressed criticism of Nolan’s interpretation of the famous epic, and his latest announcement is widely viewed as an alternative approach using artificial intelligence.

The proposal has attracted widespread attention across social media, with technology enthusiasts and film fans debating whether AI can produce feature-length movies capable of matching traditional filmmaking.

Supporters believe advances in artificial intelligence are transforming the entertainment industry. They argue that AI-generated video technology has improved rapidly and could reduce production costs while making filmmaking faster and more accessible.

Many users praised the capabilities of AI-generated characters and visual effects, saying recent improvements have produced increasingly realistic performances and cinematic quality.

However, others questioned whether artificial intelligence can replace human creativity. Critics argued that while AI may be useful for technical production, it still struggles to create emotionally powerful stories, memorable characters, and original artistic ideas. They believe experienced writers, directors, and actors remain essential to producing high-quality films.

The announcement has intensified the broader debate about the growing role of artificial intelligence in creative industries. Experts say AI is becoming increasingly capable of assisting with scriptwriting, visual effects, editing, animation, and content production, but concerns remain over originality, copyright, employment, and the future of creative professions.

Musk’s project also highlights the increasing competition among technology companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Companies around the world are racing to develop more advanced AI systems capable of producing videos, films, music, and other digital content with minimal human involvement.

Newcastle complete signing of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga

Newcastle, currently without a permanent manager, announced Monday that they have signed Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Portuguese club Braga. Hornicek has agreed to a five year contract after Newcastle triggered his 30 million euro release clause, a fee equivalent to roughly 25.7 million pounds or 34.6 million dollars. He becomes the club’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window. The 24 year old, who is expected to challenge Nick Pope for the starting goalkeeper role, described the past few days as an emotional experience since first learning of the move, and said he is thrilled to have completed the transfer. He said he is aware of Newcastle’s reputation as a major football city, pointing to the roughly 52,000 fans who fill St James’ Park and create an atmosphere he said pushes the team in every match, adding that he is eager to play in front of them. Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said Hornicek has firmly established himself as one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe. The signing comes during a turbulent period for the club. Eddie Howe stepped down as Newcastle manager last week after five years in charge, following a difficult campaign that saw the team finish 12th in the Premier League. The club has also faced a challenging summer transfer window on other fronts. Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali has completed a move to Tottenham, while England forward Anthony Gordon has departed for Barcelona. Captain Bruno Guimaraes has also been strongly linked with a switch to Premier League champions Arsenal. Newcastle will open their Premier League season at home against Liverpool on August 23.

PM orders fast-track strategy for Discos privatisa…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to adopt a comprehensive strategy to attract local and international investors for the privatisation of state-owned electricity distribution companies (Discos). He also ordered the restructuring of the Privatisation Commission within one month to strengthen its role in the reform process. Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said the privatisation programme must move forward according to the approved timelines. He stressed that every stage should be completed transparently and in line with international standards and legal requirements. He added that the process should deliver positive financial results while protecting the interests of electricity consumers. The prime minister instructed officials to ensure that reputable investors participate in the bidding process. He said investor confidence should be increased through effective planning, transparency and a clear policy framework. At the same time, he emphasised that consumer rights should remain a top priority during the transfer of power distribution companies to the private sector. Officials informed the meeting that investor roadshows for the first phase of the privatisation programme had been completed successfully. These campaigns focused on Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco). Similar investment outreach activities held in Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and China also received encouraging responses from potential investors. The meeting reviewed progress on institutional reforms within the Privatisation Commission. The prime minister directed the commission to recruit experienced professionals in finance, law and information technology. He said hiring qualified experts would improve the commission’s capacity to manage large-scale transactions and strengthen investor confidence. He also instructed officials to incorporate recommendations from professional consultants into the privatisation process. All legal, financial and regulatory requirements should be completed without delay to ensure smooth implementation, he added. The prime minister further ordered the establishment of an effective grievance redress mechanism to address complaints from consumers after the companies are privatised. He said public confidence would depend on uninterrupted services, transparency and accountability. The government is offering investors the opportunity to acquire majority or full ownership of Fesco, Gepco and Iesco, along with management control. These companies are considered among the strongest electricity distribution companies in the country and together provide power to more than 14 million consumers across Punjab, the Islamabad region and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The privatisation plan is part of the government’s broader economic reform programme. The initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce financial losses, attract domestic and foreign investment, strengthen service delivery and modernise Pakistan’s power sector through greater private-sector participation.

Asif signals possible US-Iran deal amid Hormuz talks

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said the United States and Iran may be moving closer to an agreement as diplomatic efforts continue to resolve the conflict and ease restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to Bloomberg, Asif said recent developments had created renewed hopes for a possible peace arrangement. He said signals over the past two to three days suggested that Washington and Tehran were approaching “some sort of an arrangement.” His comments came as Qatar said separate discussions between Oman and Iran regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz had reached an advanced stage. The waterway remains at the centre of the crisis. It is a major route for global energy supplies, with a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it. Pakistan and Qatar have been involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States. Pakistan has continued contacts with Iranian officials as part of these mediation efforts. On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Tehran. Details of their discussion were not immediately disclosed, but the meeting came amid renewed diplomatic activity over the conflict. Iran has previously said it was working with Oman on arrangements for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has maintained that reopening the waterway fully would depend on the United States meeting several conditions. Those demands include compensation, an easing of sanctions and guarantees against further military action, according to Iranian officials. Araghchi has said Iran and the US are not holding direct negotiations. Messages are instead being exchanged through intermediaries. US President Donald Trump has also raised the issue of compensation. He said Washington would seek payments from Iran for damage and casualties allegedly caused over several decades. Despite the diplomatic activity, tensions remain high in regional waters. Four crew members were reportedly killed in a suspected attack on a cargo vessel near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The incident was blamed on Houthi forces, although the group had not immediately claimed responsibility. A separate container ship was also reportedly struck while sailing through the Gulf of Oman near Pakistan. Initial reports indicated that the incident may have involved US military action. The developments have increased concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region. Oil prices also remained elevated because of uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Prices eased on Tuesday after reaching a one-week high earlier in the session as investors responded to signs of possible diplomatic progress. The crisis has placed pressure on Washington and Tehran to find a political solution. Any agreement that reduces tensions and restores normal shipping through Hormuz could have a major impact on global energy markets.

UK brain drain? 246,000 Britons leave in a year

The number of young and skilled people leaving the United Kingdom has increased significantly in recent years, raising concerns about the country’s ability to retain its talent. However, experts have cautioned against describing the trend as a complete “brain drain,” saying many people may eventually return to the UK. Official figures show that around 246,000 British citizens left the country last year, while the number of Britons returning was considerably lower. The gap between departures and returns has continued to widen since 2022. People under the age of 35 make up a significant proportion of those leaving the UK. Rising living costs, high taxes, expensive housing and increasing education costs are among the factors encouraging young people to consider opportunities abroad. The UK’s labour market has also become a concern for young graduates. Unemployment has reached 5.2 per cent, while the number of graduate-level job opportunities has reportedly fallen by around 45 per cent. London, in particular, has become increasingly expensive for young professionals. High rents and the overall cost of living are making it difficult for many people to establish themselves financially. Research suggests that the desire among young Britons to live and work abroad is growing. According to a British Council study, 72 per cent of Britons aged 18 to 30 are considering living and working overseas either temporarily or for a longer period. Canada and Australia are emerging as popular destinations for Britons seeking better career opportunities and a lower cost of living. The trend has sparked debate over whether Britain is becoming less attractive to skilled workers. Experts, however, say migration should not automatically be viewed as a permanent loss of talent. Many young professionals move abroad to gain international experience, improve their career prospects or seek better living conditions. Some may eventually return to Britain after gaining experience overseas. The growing number of departures nevertheless presents a challenge for the UK economy. Retaining young graduates and skilled professionals is increasingly important as the country faces pressure from rising living costs and a competitive global labour market.

Preliminary post-mortem report released in deaths …

The preliminary post-mortem report of two women who died while in police custody at Lahore’s Town Ship Police Station has been released. According to the report, there were no visible signs of physical torture on the bodies of the two women, and their deaths appear to have been caused by natural or medical reasons. However, the exact cause of death has not yet been established, and further forensic investigation is underway. The two women, identified as Anmol and Amina, were residents of Pakpattan and had been taken into police custody on suspicion of involvement in an alleged fraud-related incident. Both women died under mysterious circumstances on August 4 while they were being held at the Town Ship Police Station in Lahore. According to the initial post-mortem findings, multiple needle or syringe marks were found on the bodies of both women. The report, however, did not identify any apparent marks of physical violence or torture. Police officials have said that the final cause of death will only become clear after the forensic examination of samples collected from the bodies. Police have claimed that they suspect the two women may have consumed poisonous tablets while in custody. Samples and other relevant material obtained from both bodies have been sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis. The forensic report is expected to determine whether any poisonous substance or medication was present in their bodies and may help investigators establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths. According to police, the women had been arrested on allegations of fraud and deception. A video allegedly showing one of the women removing earrings from an elderly woman has also surfaced. Police said that a female resident of the Town Ship area had contacted the emergency helpline 15 and handed the two women over to the police after the incident. Residents of the neighborhood also provided police with another video. In the footage, the two women can allegedly be seen removing earrings from an elderly woman. The video has become an important part of the investigation as authorities attempt to establish what happened before the women were taken into custody. Another video recorded by a camera installed in the room of the police station’s duty clerk has also emerged. The footage reportedly shows Anmol and Amina sitting on chairs inside the police station. They appear to be conscious and interacting with the duty clerk. The video further shows the two women talking to the clerk shortly before they leave the room. The footage is being examined as part of the investigation into their deaths and may help investigators establish their condition and movements while they were at the police station. The deaths have raised questions about what happened to the women during their time in custody. While police have ruled out visible signs of physical torture in the preliminary post-mortem examination, the presence of multiple syringe marks and the allegation that the women may have consumed poisonous tablets have prompted further investigation. Authorities are now awaiting the forensic examination results, which are expected to provide crucial evidence regarding the exact cause of death. Until the final forensic report is received, officials have not reached a definitive conclusion about how the two women died.
