PM orders fast-track strategy for Discos privatisa…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to adopt a comprehensive strategy to attract local and international investors for the privatisation of state-owned electricity distribution companies (Discos). He also ordered the restructuring of the Privatisation Commission within one month to strengthen its role in the reform process.

Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said the privatisation programme must move forward according to the approved timelines. He stressed that every stage should be completed transparently and in line with international standards and legal requirements. He added that the process should deliver positive financial results while protecting the interests of electricity consumers.

The prime minister instructed officials to ensure that reputable investors participate in the bidding process. He said investor confidence should be increased through effective planning, transparency and a clear policy framework. At the same time, he emphasised that consumer rights should remain a top priority during the transfer of power distribution companies to the private sector.

Officials informed the meeting that investor roadshows for the first phase of the privatisation programme had been completed successfully. These campaigns focused on Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco). Similar investment outreach activities held in Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and China also received encouraging responses from potential investors.

The meeting reviewed progress on institutional reforms within the Privatisation Commission. The prime minister directed the commission to recruit experienced professionals in finance, law and information technology. He said hiring qualified experts would improve the commission’s capacity to manage large-scale transactions and strengthen investor confidence.

He also instructed officials to incorporate recommendations from professional consultants into the privatisation process. All legal, financial and regulatory requirements should be completed without delay to ensure smooth implementation, he added.

The prime minister further ordered the establishment of an effective grievance redress mechanism to address complaints from consumers after the companies are privatised. He said public confidence would depend on uninterrupted services, transparency and accountability.

The government is offering investors the opportunity to acquire majority or full ownership of Fesco, Gepco and Iesco, along with management control. These companies are considered among the strongest electricity distribution companies in the country and together provide power to more than 14 million consumers across Punjab, the Islamabad region and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The privatisation plan is part of the government’s broader economic reform programme. The initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce financial losses, attract domestic and foreign investment, strengthen service delivery and modernise Pakistan’s power sector through greater private-sector participation.

Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman likewise endorsed the pact, saying greater cooperation could reduce Pakistan’s reliance on hostile powers. He proposed expanding the arrangement to include Qatar, Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia and Indonesia. The leaders’ statements reflect growing political support for the Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye security partnership, with calls emerging for it to develop into a wider alliance capable of promoting collective defence and stability across the Muslim world.

    Michigan has reported a sharp increase in cases of cyclosporiasis as health authorities continue to monitor one of the largest outbreaks of the intestinal illness in recent years. According to the latest update from the state’s health department, the total number of reported cases has climbed to 9,253, an increase of 1,077 infections since the previous report issued on Friday. The outbreak has led to 160 hospitalizations across the state. However, officials said no deaths have been recorded so far. Public health authorities are continuing to track new infections while working with federal agencies to identify the source of the outbreak and prevent additional cases. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. People usually become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with human waste. Raw fruits and vegetables are among the most common sources of infection because they are often eaten without cooking, allowing the parasite to survive if proper food safety measures are not followed. The outbreak in Michigan is part of a wider public health concern affecting several states across the United States. Federal data show that 4,173 laboratory confirmed domestic cases have been recorded nationwide. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reviewing more than 7,400 suspected cases that have not yet been confirmed through laboratory testing. Many of these reports have come from Michigan and neighboring Ohio. The US Food and Drug Administration and the CDC have expanded their joint investigation after identifying additional infections in four more states. Health officials are focusing on a possible link between the outbreak and shredded iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico. The investigation now includes cases reported in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Authorities are examining distribution records and supply chains to determine how contaminated produce may have reached consumers in different parts of the country. According to the FDA, epidemiological data collected by the CDC indicate that 1,947 people infected with the Cyclospora parasite had eaten food from Taco Bell restaurants before becoming ill. Investigators believe many of those infections may be connected to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell locations. However, officials say the investigation is still ongoing and a final conclusion has not yet been reached. Health experts have reported cases of cyclosporiasis in at least 41 states this year, although not all infections are believed to be related to the current outbreak. Investigators are continuing to determine which cases are connected to the suspected contaminated lettuce and which may have originated from other sources. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis often include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. While most people recover with appropriate treatment, the illness can be more serious for older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Health authorities continue to advise consumers to follow food safety practices and remain alert for symptoms as the investigation into the outbreak continues.

The order required him to stay away from her and leave their shared home. Those allegations are separate from the homicide investigation and had not been resolved in court at the time of the incident. Gilson’s final TikTok posts received millions of views after she alleged that her estranged husband was a paedophile. The videos quickly spread across social media, with many users expressing concern for her safety and urging authorities to investigate the claims. Following her death, those posts resurfaced as people reflected on the tragedy. Friends and followers have remembered Gilson as a devoted mother and a positive presence online. A fundraising campaign has since been launched to support her children, while tributes continue to pour in across social media. Many users have described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers faced by victims of domestic abuse. The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced any additional criminal proceedings because the suspected shooter is deceased.     PTI questions Imran Khan’s transfer to Pims

    ISLAMABAD: Opposition leaders have raised serious questions over the decision to take former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) instead of Shifa International Hospital. The issue has created a fresh political dispute between the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Speaking in the National Assembly, senior politician and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai said a positive atmosphere had developed after reports emerged that Imran would be taken to hospital. Achakzai said people across Pakistan were happy to hear that Imran was being taken to hospital for a medical examination. He said his party had instructed its workers not to go to any hospital. The decision was aimed at avoiding any situation that could create security problems, he added. Achakzai also claimed that Imran’s sisters were stopped at Shifa International Hospital. He said the development had caused concern among people across the country. He questioned why the situation changed after an apparently positive atmosphere had developed. Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan strongly criticised the decision to take Imran to Pims. Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Gohar said the party had not expected Imran to be taken to another hospital. He also expressed concern over the lack of clear information about the former prime minister’s medical examination. Gohar claimed that the Supreme Court’s order had not been implemented. He said the court’s directive was clear and contained no ambiguity. According to Gohar, failure to implement a clear judicial order was unfortunate. He questioned how democracy could function if court orders could not be implemented. “If implementing a court order is difficult, then how will democracy function?” he asked. Gohar also said political negotiations could not take place under such circumstances. He maintained that democracy required institutions and political actors to respect the law and judicial decisions. Despite his criticism, the PTI chairman said his party remained committed to negotiations. He said the PTI wanted political disputes to be resolved through dialogue. He added that efforts in this regard would continue. The controversy follows Information Minister Attaullah Tarar’s statement about Imran’s medical examination. Tarar said Imran was examined at Pims rather than Shifa International Hospital. He said doctors from Shifa were also present during the medical examination. The government has maintained that security concerns led authorities to take Imran to Pims. The issue has now become a new point of confrontation between the government and PTI. The PTI is questioning the decision to change the hospital and the implementation of the Supreme Court’s directive. The government, meanwhile, is defending the move on security and medical grounds.
