122 Dera Ghazi Khan farmers receive land allotment certificates

Dera Ghazi Khan – Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, under her farmer-friendly vision, has initiated the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” scheme to promote agricultural development and economic prosperity for cultivators. As part of this initiative, land allotment certificates were distributed among 122 farmers in District Dera Ghazi Khan.

A ceremony was held at the District Council Hall in Dera Ghazi Khan, where Members of the Punjab Assembly Muhammad Hanif Patafi and Sardar Salahuddin Khan Khosa attended as special guests. The event was presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner Revenue Niaz Ahmed Mughal.

On this occasion, Assistant Commissioners Taimur Usman and Hafiz Umar Saeed, along with officials from the agriculture, revenue, and other relevant departments, a large number of farmers, and prominent figures from the district were present.

Addressing the ceremony, the members of the provincial assembly and other speakers said that the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” scheme, launched by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to make small and medium-scale farmers self-reliant in the agricultural sector.

They noted that providing easy access to modern farm machinery, reducing production costs, increasing agricultural output, and promoting advanced farming technologies are all integral components of this initiative.

Under the scheme, eligible farmers selected through a transparent ballot process are being provided subsidized agricultural machinery, which will not only boost their income but also foster innovation, mechanisation, and sustainable growth in the farming sector.

The special guests, in their addresses, emphasised that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is prioritising the welfare and wellbeing of farmers as a top agenda. They stated that the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” scheme is a key part of these efforts, through which thousands of cultivators will benefit and the agricultural sector will be further strengthened.

During the ceremony, land allotment certificates were distributed among the selected 122 farmers, and a firm commitment was expressed that the Punjab government will continue its support for farmers prosperity, agricultural self-sufficiency, and food security. Additionally, a development grant of 50,000 rupees per acre will also be provided for cultivation purposes.

    HANGU: Ten police personnel, including DSP City Diyar Khan, who embraced martyrdom in the terrorist attack on the Khazina Banda Check Post in Hangu, were laid to rest with full state honours on Wednesday. The funeral prayers were offered at the Police Lines, Hangu, where senior police officers, government officials, fellow policemen and local dignitaries paid tribute to the fallen heroes. Commandant Police Training College Hangu, Shaukat Abbas, Deputy Commissioner Basir Ali Rehman, senior police officials and a large number of citizens attended the funeral. Floral wreaths were laid on the coffins of the martyrs in recognition of their supreme sacrifice. After the funeral, the bodies were dispatched to their native towns for burial with full official honours. According to police officials, terrorists belonging to the banned Fitna Al-Khawarij launched a coordinated assault on the Khazina Banda Check Post late Tuesday night. The attackers reportedly used quadcopters before laying siege to the check post. Police personnel stationed at the post resisted the assault bravely and continued fighting until the last moment. Upon receiving information about the attack, DSP City Diyar Khan led a reinforcement party comprising personnel from the Elite Force, RRF and Al-Barq Force. However, the police convoy was ambushed near the Khazina Banda Bridge, where heavily armed militants had already taken positions. Despite the surprise attack, the police fought courageously in defence of the country. The attack claimed the lives of 10 police personnel, including DSP Diyar Khan, while around 30 others were injured. Police officials said that during the exchange of fire, 12 to 15 terrorists were killed or wounded, and their accomplices reportedly carried the casualties towards the Zargari area. Following the incident, police and security forces launched a large scale search operation in the area. Funeral prayers for the martyrs were also held in their respective hometowns. Police Constable Nadeem was laid to rest in Sheikhan, while Constable Sanaullah was buried in Lachi, both with full state honours. Smartly turned out police contingents presented ceremonial salutes, and senior police officers, political leaders, social figures and hundreds of residents attended the funerals. Similarly, the funeral prayer of martyred police constable Abdul Saeed, a resident of Lower Dir, was offered in his native village Katan Pyan. District Police Officer Lower Dir Syed Talal Ahmad Shah and other police officers attended the ceremony and paid tribute to the martyr, assuring his family that the sacrifices of police personnel would never be forgotten. Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi paid a brief visit to Hangu and stayed at the Police Club, where he offered prayers for the departed souls of the martyrs and the early recovery of the injured personnel. However, the Chief Minister left Hangu without visiting the injured policemen undergoing treatment in hospital. His decision not to meet the wounded officers has drawn criticism and raised questions in various circles, as several injured personnel remain admitted to hospitals following the attack. In contrast, Additional IG Elite Force Muhammad Ali Gandapur visited the hospital to inquire about the health of the injured policemen. He was accompanied by Regional Commander Elite Hafiz Nazir and DSP CTD Imranuddin. Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, and Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Tariq Saeed Marwat also visited the hospital and met the injured officers. Speaking to the media, IG Zulfiqar Hameed said the police fought the terrorists with exceptional courage for several hours despite facing drone attacks. He stated that 12 to 14 terrorists were killed during the operation and confirmed that all injured policemen were in stable condition and receiving the best available medical treatment. The IG announced that recommendations would be forwarded for gallantry awards, including the Tamgha-e-Shujaat, for the martyrs and other officers who displayed extraordinary bravery during the operation. He vowed that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice. Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah praised the courage of the police force, saying their sacrifice demonstrated their unwavering commitment to protecting the people despite grave danger. He also appreciated the district administration and hospital management for ensuring timely medical treatment for the injured. Special Assistant Tariq Saeed Marwat reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting the police force financially and administratively. He said the nature of terrorism had evolved with the use of drones, adding that the government was working to equip the police with anti drone technology and other modern capabilities to effectively counter emerging security threats.

    Riyadh Air begins operations in Pakistan with inaugural Islamabad flight

    ISLAMABAD: Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s newly established national airline, has officially started flight operations to Pakistan, strengthening direct air connectivity between the two countries. The airline’s first flight to Pakistan, RX-660, arrived at Islamabad International Airport from Riyadh on Friday evening, marking Riyadh Air’s debut in the Pakistani aviation market, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA). The inaugural flight carried 69 passengers on arrival and received a ceremonial water salute as it approached the airport terminal. The traditional welcome marked the beginning of a new chapter in commercial air links between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Riyadh Air is scheduled to operate seven flights a week between Riyadh and Islamabad, giving passengers an additional option for direct travel between the two countries. The new service is expected to facilitate business travel, tourism, family visits and other passenger movements between Pakistan and the Kingdom. An inauguration ceremony was subsequently organised at Islamabad International Airport to formally mark the launch of the airline’s operations. Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf Bin Said Al-Malki attended the ceremony as the chief guest. The event was also attended by Pakistan Airports Authority Director General Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed, senior government officials and representatives of Riyadh Air. Addressing the ceremony, the Saudi ambassador underscored the importance of the new air service in strengthening the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He noted that improved aviation links could contribute to closer people-to-people contacts and greater economic and commercial engagement between the two countries. PAA Director General Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed welcomed Riyadh Air’s entry into the Pakistani market, describing the new route as a significant development for bilateral air connectivity. He highlighted the role of expanded flight operations in improving passenger mobility and creating opportunities for greater cooperation in the aviation sector. The launch also reflects growing links between the two countries across tourism, trade, investment and other areas. The inauguration ceremony featured a ribbon-cutting and cake-cutting ceremony, formally commemorating Riyadh Air’s first scheduled service to Pakistan. Representatives of Riyadh Air also outlined the airline’s broader expansion ambitions and expressed interest in developing its presence in the Pakistani market. The airline’s entry is expected to provide passengers with greater choice while contributing to increased competition and capacity on the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia air corridor. Following the ceremony, flight RX-660 departed from Islamabad International Airport at 9:56 p.m., carrying 272 passengers on its return journey to Riyadh. The launch comes against the backdrop of longstanding and extensive travel ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Large numbers of Pakistani citizens travel to Saudi Arabia each year for employment, business, religious pilgrimage and family-related purposes, making reliable and frequent air connections between the two countries particularly important. With daily operations planned between Islamabad and Riyadh, Riyadh Air’s arrival is expected to further expand available passenger capacity and strengthen links between the two capitals.

    Gold prices rise in Pakistan

      KARACHI: Gold prices climbed in Pakistan on Monday, even though international gold rates experienced a slight decline. The increase in local prices was mainly attributed to continued uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict, concerns over rising inflation, and investor caution ahead of key US economic data expected later this week. According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association, the price of 24-karat gold increased by Rs1,700 per tola, taking it to Rs428,436. Similarly, the price of 10 grams of goldrose by Rs1,457, reaching Rs367,314. The latest increase came after a significant decline on Saturday, when gold prices had fallen by Rs3,700 per tola to settle at Rs426,736. In contrast, the international gold market remained under slight pressure. Spot gold slipped by 0.1% to $4,037.01 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery declined by 0.3% to $4,035.80 per ounce during trading. Despite the minor drop, analysts believe global investors remain cautious because of ongoing geopolitical tensions and expectations of fresh economic developments in the United States. Silver prices in Pakistan also moved higher. The price of silver gained Rs54 per tola, taking it to Rs6,291, reflecting continued demand for precious metals in the local market. Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities, said that international gold prices had eased slightly after fluctuating throughout the trading session. According to him, gold touched a high of $4,080 per ounce before falling to a low of$4,019, eventually stabilising near $4,038. He noted that gold remains under pressure and the market is closely monitoring upcoming US economic indicators, particularly employment data, which could influence the Federal Reserve’s future monetary policy decisions. Agar added that gold has remained within a broad trading range of approximately $3,950 to $4,250 per ounce since June. However, he expects this range to break within the next one or two weeks, potentially leading to a stronger upward or downward price movement depending on market conditions. Market participants are now awaiting a series of important US labour market reports, as these will provide further insight into the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets like gold, while expectations of rate cuts tend to support bullion prices. Another factor attracting attention in the global market is reports that South Korea’s central bank intends to purchase gold from domestic producers, a move that could provide additional support to demand in the coming months. Meanwhile, oil markets have also remained highly volatile. Brent crude futures surged by more than 20% last month, driven largely by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns that higher energy prices could fuel inflation worldwide. Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, said gold has traded within a narrow range of $4,000 to $4,200 per ounce for over a month. He explained that the possibility of inflation picking up again, particularly after July’s economic data, is helping support gold prices despite the recent weakness. Separately, the Pakistani rupee posted another modest gain against the US dollar. The local currency appreciated by 0.01%, closing at Rs277.77 per dollar, compared with Rs277.80 at the end of the previous trading session, reflecting continued stability in the foreign exchange market.

    ECC approves hike in petrol, diesel dealers’ mar…

    ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved an increase in the dealers’ margin on petrol and diesel by Rs1.34 per litre. According to sources, the dealers’ margin on both petrol and diesel has been raised from Rs8.64 to Rs9.98 per litre. Vice Chairman of the All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association Nauman Butt thanked the prime minister and petroleum minister for approving the increase. The association said the government had fulfilled its long-standing demand by increasing the dealers’ margin by Rs1.34 per litre. Meanwhile, the government collected more petroleum levy revenue than both its target and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) estimate during the last fiscal year. According to Finance Ministry sources, petroleum levy collections exceeded Rs1.56 trillion during the previous fiscal year. More than Rs50 billion was also collected under the Climate Support Levy. Petroleum levy collections were around Rs100 billion higher than the government’s target and Rs21 billion above the IMF’s estimate. At present, a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre is being charged on petrol. High-Speed Diesel carries a levy of Rs77.28 per litre. In addition, a separate Climate Support Levy of Rs5 per litre is being imposed on both petrol and diesel.

    PM takes notice of lawmakers’ absenteeism

    ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the low attendance of lawmakers during parliamentary sessions. Speaking to the media outside the National Assembly on Tuesday, Sadiq said some federal ministers had raised the issue of members’ absence with the prime minister. He said the government and lawmakers were now paying attention to improving attendance. The speaker’s comments came after a session of the National Assembly witnessed a low presence of members, with a large number of seats remaining vacant during proceedings. Sadiq said maintaining the required quorum was not solely the responsibility of the speaker. He said both the government and opposition benches had a duty to ensure that their members attended parliamentary proceedings. He expressed hope that attendance would improve when the next session is held, which is expected to take place later this week. According to the speaker, the government had conveyed that it recognised the seriousness of the issue and intended to improve lawmakers’ presence in future sessions. Sadiq urged members from both sides of the House to remain present during proceedings. He said parliamentary sessions provided limited time for debate, questions, discussions and legislation, and lawmakers should make full use of the opportunity. He noted that poor attendance affected both sides of the House. The government could not properly complete its legislative agenda, while opposition members also lost the opportunity to raise issues and scrutinise government policies. The speaker also commented on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s intention to adopt a more active approach towards legislation. Sadiq welcomed the move, saying stronger opposition participation could improve parliamentary accountability. He said constructive pressure from opposition parties could also encourage the government to introduce reforms. Regarding resignations submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members from standing committees, the speaker said he had not accepted any of the resignations. He said parliamentary committees were continuing to function and could perform more effectively if opposition members regularly participated in their meetings. Asked about the possibility of the united opposition moving a no-confidence motion against him or Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Sadiq said it was a constitutional and democratic right of the opposition. He said the National Assembly would facilitate the opposition if it decided to exercise that right. Sadiq also spoke about efforts to reduce political tensions between the government and opposition. He said several attempts had been made to bring the two sides to the negotiating table. He said he, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the law minister and Rana Sanaullah had repeatedly offered dialogue.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: A terrorist attack on a joint police checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district has resulted in the martyrdom of 15 people, including 14 security personnel, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The military’s media wing said the attack took place early Friday and was carried out by militants identified as Fitna-al-Khawarij, a term used by authorities for members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). ISPR said the attackers attempted to breach the checkpost’s perimeter, but their efforts were swiftly stopped by security forces. The personnel deployed at the post responded with courage and professionalism, engaging the attackers and killing 15 militants. According to the statement, after the failed attempt to enter the checkpost, the attackers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall. The powerful blast caused severe damage to the infrastructure and resulted in the martyrdom of 15 individuals, including 12 soldiers, two police officers, and a government official from the former forest department. A sanitisation operation is currently underway in the area to locate and eliminate any remaining terrorists. ISPR said security forces and law enforcement agencies will continue counterterrorism operations under the Azm-e-Istehkam strategy to eliminate terrorism from the country. The military’s media wing paid tribute to the sacrifices of security personnel, stating that their sacrifices strengthen Pakistan’s resolve to protect the nation. The attack comes amid increased militant activity in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Security forces have recently conducted operations in Bannu and surrounding areas, where several militants were killed during intelligence-based operations. Authorities say efforts are continuing to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent further attacks against security personnel and civilians.
