Former Pakistan Test captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rashid Latif has called on Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to make better use of former captain Younis Khan’s expertise for the growth and development of cricket in the country. Latif believes that experienced former players like Younis Khan can play a significant role in nurturing young talent and strengthening Pakistan’s cricket structure.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Younis Khan Cricket Academy at KHA Legend Arena in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Rashid Latif stressed the need to put Pakistan cricket on the right path by involving accomplished cricketers in the development process. He said Younis Khan’s vast experience and commitment to the game make him one of the best individuals to guide the next generation of players.

Latif also reflected on Karachi’s rich cricketing history, noting that there was a time when the Pakistan national team featured a large number of players from the city. However, he said the situation has changed over the years, and Karachi no longer contributes players at the same level as it once did.

Highlighting the importance of Karachi’s Malir district, Rashid Latif said the area has produced several outstanding cricketers, including Saeed Anwar, Khurram Manzoor, Asim Kamal, Younis Khan, and himself. According to him, the region has long been a breeding ground for cricketing talent and deserves continued investment in player development.

The former captain also pointed out that while many of Younis Khan’s contemporaries are seeking positions within the Pakistan Cricket Board, Younis has remained focused on serving the game by working directly with aspiring cricketers. Latif praised this dedication, saying it reflects Younis Khan’s genuine passion for Pakistan cricket.

Rashid Latif expressed confidence that the Younis Khan Cricket Academy will help revive grassroots cricket in Karachi by providing young players with quality coaching and professional guidance. He emphasized that similar initiatives can strengthen the country’s cricketing future if supported by the PCB and other stakeholders.

Concluding his remarks, Latif paid tribute to Younis Khan’s remarkable achievements, describing his record of more than 10,000 Test runs and 34 Test centuries as an extraordinary milestone. He said cricketers of Younis Khan’s caliber are produced only once in a generation, making it essential for Pakistan cricket to benefit from his experience and leadership.

    SMEDA partners with PAAPAM for auto show 2026

    LAHORE: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has partnered with the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts & Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) as a strategic partner for the 21st Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS) 2026. The three-day exhibition will take place from September 18 to 20 at the Expo Centre Lahore, bringing together stakeholders from Pakistan’s automotive and engineering sectors as well as potential international business partners. The partnership reflects SMEDA’s continued efforts to strengthen micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in line with the policy direction of the Ministry of Industries and Production and the SMEDA Board of Directors. The initiative aims to help local businesses expand their market reach, develop new partnerships and become part of regional and global industrial supply chains. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan chaired a meeting on SMEDA’s collaboration with PAAPAM. Secretary of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, SMEDA Board members, CEO Nadia Jahangir Seth, Pak Suzuki head Hiroshi Kawamura and representatives of PAAPAM attended the meeting. Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government wanted to transform Pakistan into a competitive manufacturing hub by empowering MSMEs and strengthening domestic industrial value chains. He highlighted the resilience and growth potential of Pakistan’s automotive sector, saying events such as the Pakistan Auto Show could help promote local manufacturing, encourage innovation and attract investment. The SAPM called for the 2026 exhibition to become a major international platform with a strong focus on business-to-business engagement, memorandums of understanding and joint ventures. He also ordered the formation of a private-sector-led committee to prepare a comprehensive plan for making the event a landmark occasion. Khan further directed SMEDA to provide full support to PAAPAM and engage with foreign embassies and local MSMEs to facilitate effective business matchmaking during the exhibition. He said the government wanted to give MSMEs better access to markets, stronger commercial connections and greater opportunities to join regional and international value chains. Secretary MoI&P Saif Anjum said the event should help local auto parts manufacturers gain greater exposure and establish business links with international competitors. He called for SMEDA, PAAPAM, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Engineering Development Board (EDB) to work together to achieve the exhibition’s objectives. SMEDA CEO Nadia Jahangir Seth described the automotive sector as one of Pakistan’s most dynamic industries, with significant potential for SME-driven growth. She said numerous MSMEs play a key role in the country’s auto parts and engineering ecosystem. Through its partnership with PAAPAM, SMEDA aims to help these businesses present their capabilities, establish strategic alliances, adopt modern technologies and explore new opportunities in domestic and international markets. PAPS 2026 Convener Salman Saleem welcomed SMEDA’s participation, saying the partnership would strengthen efforts to present Pakistan’s automotive industry to the global market. He said SMEDA’s support would increase SME participation and reinforce efforts to promote local manufacturing under the “Make in Pakistan” vision. A symposium will also take place on September 19 alongside the exhibition. Organisers expect the session to contribute to discussions on the future of Pakistan’s automotive industry and help develop a roadmap for further growth and collaboration.

According to Dar, these initiatives reflected Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and regional stability. He expressed gratitude to the United States, Iran, Gulf nations, and other international partners for placing their trust in Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts. Describing the recent progress as the result of patient negotiations and dialogue, Dar warned that these achievements must be safeguarded through continued engagement rather than allowing tensions to resurface. Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting every initiative aimed at restoring peace and security in the region. He urged all parties to exercise restraint, fulfill their commitments, and prioritize diplomatic solutions over confrontation. He also expressed hope that ongoing negotiations would help restore normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international trade route. At the beginning of his speech, Dar thanked the Philippines for hosting the ministerial meeting and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. He described the ASEAN Regional Forum as a key platform for regional security cooperation and welcomed the adoption of the Manila Plan of Action (2026–2036), pledging Pakistan’s support for its successful implementation. Addressing South Asian affairs, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains a major source of regional instability. He called for a peaceful resolution based on the United Nations Charter, relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. He also voiced concerns over India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, describing the move as a unilateral action that could threaten Pakistan’s water security and the livelihoods of millions of its citizens. Dar urged the international community to support international law and encourage peaceful solutions to regional disputes. Speaking on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Dar described the situation as deeply concerning and called for immediate international action to prevent further suffering. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
