Flood defences shield Gujrat from monsoon

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has credited pre-monsoon flood protection measures with preventing urban flooding in Gujrat during the recent spell of heavy rains.

Managing Director WASA, Kashan Hafeez, said the city remained safe from potential flooding because of advance planning and the timely completion of key drainage projects before the arrival of the monsoon season.

He said a three-kilometre-long protective drain constructed along Mehsam Mor and Fatehpur Road proved highly effective in managing the flow of rainwater. According to him, the project successfully diverted excess water away from residential and commercial areas, significantly reducing the risk of flooding.

Kashan Hafeez said rainwater was redirected toward the Halsey Nullah through the newly developed drainage network. By channeling water into natural waterways, authorities were able to prevent water from accumulating in densely populated neighborhoods and major roads.

He added that the drainage system functioned as planned despite heavy rainfall, allowing rainwater to flow smoothly without causing widespread disruption to daily life or damage to infrastructure.

The WASA chief said the protective drainage network was developed under a Rs2 billion infrastructure project aimed at strengthening Gujrat’s flood management system. As part of the initiative, four major protective drains were constructed to improve stormwater disposal and enhance the city’s resilience against seasonal flooding.

He said the successful performance of the project demonstrates the importance of proactive planning and investment in urban infrastructure. According to WASA, the newly built drainage system will continue to play a vital role in protecting Gujrat from future monsoon-related flooding and ensuring the safety of residents during periods of heavy rainfall.

Israeli court halts Ben-Gvir plan to place crocodi…

An Israeli court has temporarily blocked National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s plan to install crocodiles around Ketziot Prison in southern Israel’s Negev desert, where Palestinian detainees from Gaza are being held, according to Israeli media reports on Monday. Israeli authorities had already begun digging trenches around the section of the prison holding Palestinians detained from Gaza over alleged involvement in the events of October 7, 2023. Under the plan championed by Ben-Gvir, crocodiles would be placed inside these trenches as a security measure. Israel’s public broadcaster reported that the Jerusalem District Court issued a temporary injunction on Sunday evening after the animal rights group Let the Animals Live filed a legal petition challenging the plan, which has the backing of the National Security Ministry and the Israel Prison Service. Judge Avraham Rubin ordered authorities to halt any action based on a decision by Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman to classify crocodiles as tended wild animals, a legal designation that would have permitted their transfer to and use at the prison facility. According to the broadcaster, the ruling followed an administrative petition the organization filed against Silman, Ben-Gvir and the Israel Prison Service just hours earlier. The temporary order will stay in place until authorities file their formal response, which the court expects by mid August. The dispute centers on a decision Silman made on July 15 that was designed to allow crocodiles to serve as what officials described as a deterrent and security measure inside prisons. The petition filed against the plan argues that the decision effectively strips crocodiles of protections normally applied to wild animals by removing the licensing and oversight mechanisms that would otherwise govern their care and control. Let the Animals Live told the broadcaster that the Israel Prison Service had already started infrastructure work, including digging a canal around the prison, and said the National Security Ministry had set aside 21 million shekels, or roughly 6.9 million dollars, to fund the pilot project. The group said the decision was made without adequate legal authority and disregarded expert and legal warnings about risks to the animals themselves, to the public and to the surrounding environment. Officials have not yet submitted the government’s formal position to the court, though a response is expected as part of the proceedings tied to the injunction request. Representatives from Let the Animals Live and the Environmental Justice and Animal Rights Clinic at Tel Aviv University said the court’s order prevents irreversible construction work from moving forward for now and protects the animals’ welfare while they continue pursuing a permanent cancellation of the plan. Since taking office in late 2022, Ben-Gvir has overseen a broader tightening of detention conditions for Palestinian prisoners, including measures involving food deprivation, denial of medical care, mistreatment and prolonged isolation. Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations report that approximately 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, are currently held in Israeli facilities under harsh conditions, with dozens reported to have died as a result of starvation, mistreatment and medical neglect.

Sindh health minister calls for stronger measures to protect mothers during childbirth

Karachi: Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho has expressed serious concern over the rising maternal mortality rate associated with repeated cesarean section (C-section) deliveries. Speaking at the “Maa Rahe Salamat” (May Mothers Stay Safe) Family Planning Summit held at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi, she emphasized the urgent need for stronger policies and legislation to protect the lives and health of mothers in Pakistan. Addressing participants at the summit, Dr. Pechuho stated that Sindh has taken a leading role in promoting maternal and child health across the country. She highlighted that the provincial government has introduced several laws and initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services for women and children, particularly during pregnancy and childbirth. The health minister noted that the increasing number of cesarean deliveries has contributed to a higher rate of maternal deaths. According to her, repeated surgical deliveries expose women to greater health risks, including excessive bleeding, infections, complications from anesthesia, and damage to internal organs. She said the provincial health department is actively working to address these issues and expressed confidence that the results of these efforts will become visible in the near future. Dr. Pechuho stressed that protecting mothers during childbirth should be treated as a national priority. She said the government wants to introduce legislation that ensures the safety of women during pregnancy and delivery while also promoting informed family planning decisions. One of the key proposals she discussed was the introduction of tubal ligation after a woman’s third cesarean section. Tubal ligation is a permanent method of contraception in which the fallopian tubes are blocked or sealed to prevent future pregnancies. According to Dr. Pechuho, women who undergo a third C-section face significantly higher health risks if they become pregnant again. She argued that women should have the right to request tubal ligation during their third cesarean delivery if they wish to avoid future pregnancies. In her view, providing this option would help reduce preventable maternal deaths and improve long-term maternal health outcomes. She added that ensuring access to this procedure should be considered an important part of reproductive healthcare. The minister further remarked that if Pakistan is serious about reducing maternal mortality, mandatory consideration of tubal ligation after a third cesarean section should be included in public health policy. She explained that she deliberately presented the proposal in cautious terms but believes that legislation should move in this direction. According to her, she is already working to advance legal reforms that would support this objective. Dr. Pechuho concluded by reaffirming the Sindh government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of mothers and newborns. She emphasized that comprehensive maternal healthcare, effective family planning services, and timely medical interventions are essential for reducing preventable deaths and ensuring healthier families. She expressed hope that the proposed legal and policy reforms would strengthen maternal healthcare services and provide greater protection for women across the province.

Hamza Shehbaz set for key coordination role at PM …

Hamza Shehbaz, son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a former chief minister of Punjab, is expected to assume a more active political role at the federal level, according to informed sources. Sources said an office has been allocated to Hamza Shehbaz at the Prime Minister’s Office. Although he has not yet been given any formal government position, he is likely to play an important role in coordinating between the prime minister and ruling party lawmakers. His main responsibility will be to engage with members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and address issues related to their constituencies. He will work to ensure that development projects, administrative matters and public concerns raised by lawmakers are communicated to the relevant authorities for timely resolution. Government legislators often seek meetings with the prime minister to discuss problems faced by their constituencies. However, due to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s busy official schedule, it is not always possible for him to meet every lawmaker. Hamza Shehbaz is expected to help manage this coordination process and facilitate communication between the government and parliamentary members. Sources said his office is located on the sixth floor of the Prime Minister’s Office. A meeting room has also been allocated alongside his office, where he is expected to hold meetings with lawmakers, party representatives and visiting delegations. Hamza Shehbaz is currently an MNA from Lahore’s NA-118 constituency. He has previous experience in coordinating with elected representatives, having performed a similar role during Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure as Punjab chief minister. Sources further said that office staff has also been assigned to assist him in carrying out his responsibilities. There is currently one vacant adviser position in the Prime Minister’s team. Under the Constitution, the prime minister can appoint up to five advisers. At present, four adviser positions are occupied. However, sources indicated that Hamza Shehbaz may not immediately receive the status of adviser or special assistant. Instead, the government is considering assigning him the title of coordinator to avoid political criticism over his appointment. If approved, he is expected to perform his responsibilities from behind the scenes while assisting the government in maintaining close coordination with lawmakers and resolving constituency-related matters.
