GB Chief Minister forms 12-member cabinet

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain has formed his provincial cabinet, appointing 12 members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly as ministers.

The newly formed cabinet includes eight members from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and four members from the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).

The appointments were made through an official notification issued by the relevant provincial departments. The notification stated that the members were appointed as ministers on the recommendation of the chief minister and approval of the governor.

The newly appointed PPP ministers include Zulfiqar Ali Murad, Syed Jalal Shah, Muhammad Ali Akhtar, Naiknam Karim, Iqbal Hassan, Raja Nasir Khan, Muhammad Naseem and Syed Tauqeer Mehdi.

The four IPP members joining the cabinet are Aman Ali, Asad Shafiq, Anwar Ali and Muhammad Dilpazeer.

The government has not yet announced the portfolios of the newly appointed ministers. Their departments are expected to be allocated in the coming days.

The IPP members selected for the cabinet had participated in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections as independent candidates before joining the party.

The new cabinet formation comes after political developments following the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. The PPP emerged as the leading party and formed the government with support from other political groups.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly currently consists of representatives from multiple political parties, including the PPP, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), IPP, Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen and a PTI-backed independent member.

Meanwhile, a by-election for the GBA-9 Skardu-III seat is scheduled after the disqualification of PPP candidate Fida Muhammad Nashad by the Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court over issues related to his nomination papers.

Following the elections, the PML-N and IPP supported the PPP candidate for the positions of chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker. However, the PML-N later decided to sit on the opposition benches.

Search operation resumes for seven missing Broad Peak climbers

GILGIT: Search and rescue teams resumed their operation on Saturday morning to locate seven climbers who remain missing after a deadly avalanche struck Broad Peak earlier this week. The mission restarted after weather conditions improved, allowing rescuers to return to one of the world’s most challenging mountain environments. The rescue operation had been suspended late Friday because of heavy snowfall, poor visibility and the continuing risk of avalanches. Officials said improving weather conditions enabled both ground and air teams to resume the search. The avalanche occurred on Thursday while a 10-member international expedition was climbing Broad Peak, an 8,047-metre mountain in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. According to regional authorities, the climbers were ascending at an altitude of around 6,600 metres when they were caught in the massive avalanche. Three climbers were confirmed dead after their bodies were recovered on Friday. The deceased were identified as Omani climber Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, Nepali mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung and American climber Mallory Geis. Their bodies were later airlifted to Skardu. Seven climbers are still missing. They include internationally renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, fellow Nepali climbers Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi and Chinese climber Wang Zhong. According to the local administration, a three-member civilian rescue team led by renowned Pakistani mountaineer Sarbaz Khan resumed the ground search on Saturday morning. Experienced Nepali climbers already stationed at the Broad Peak base camp also joined the rescue effort to assist in locating the missing mountaineers. Pakistan Army helicopters have also been deployed to support the operation. Rescue officials said helicopters are assisting with aerial surveillance, transporting rescue personnel and assessing areas that remain inaccessible by foot. Officials from the Alpine Club of Pakistan said the search operation remains extremely difficult because of steep mountain slopes, unstable snow, harsh weather and the constant threat of further avalanches. These conditions continue to slow rescue efforts and increase risks for search teams. Rescuers have also been using drone technology to scan the mountain. During the operation, drone footage reportedly identified signs of additional climbers at an altitude of around 6,000 metres. Ground teams are attempting to reach the location despite dangerous terrain and difficult weather conditions. The international rescue effort has also received support from renowned Nepali climber Mingma David Sherpa, who travelled to Pakistan to assist in the search for Nirmal Purja and the other missing climbers. Authorities said the expedition team was last in contact on Thursday morning before communication was lost. Data from the climbers’ tracking devices later suggested that several members of the team had been swept hundreds of metres down the mountainside by the avalanche.

Many users noticed that Trump’s hair appeared thicker and fuller than usual. The change soon became a talking point on X. Users shared comments about the president’s appearance. The latest pictures have also brought renewed attention to long-standing speculation about whether Trump has undergone a cosmetic procedure involving his hair. One of the claims circulating online involves an alleged scalp reduction surgery. However, there is no independent confirmation that Trump underwent such a procedure. Trump has also not publicly addressed the latest speculation about his hairstyle. Questions about the US president’s hair have existed for decades. The claims have continued to attract public interest over the years. Trump’s distinctive hairstyle has become one of his most recognisable features. His latest appearance in Las Vegas has now revived that interest. Images from the event have been widely shared online. For now, there is no verified evidence confirming that the change was the result of a cosmetic procedure.

Russian missile attack kills nine in Kyiv

KYIV: At least nine people were killed and 28 others injured after Russian ballistic missile strikes hit Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Saturday morning, Ukrainian officials said. The attack caused heavy damage in several areas of the city. Multiple explosions were reported as missiles struck residential areas and other locations. Emergency teams rushed to the affected sites to rescue people and control fires. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital came under a major missile attack. He said several explosions were heard across the city, while fires broke out and some areas faced power disruptions. Officials said the Darnytskyi district was among the worst-hit areas. At least seven people were killed there, while 14 others were injured. Two children were among those wounded in the strike. Another missile strike hit the Solomyanskyi district, killing two people and injuring eight others. A five-storey residential building was partially destroyed, trapping some residents inside. Rescue workers carried out operations to search for survivors and clear the damaged structure. The attack also affected the area around the Lithuanian embassy. Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry said a missile landed nearby, damaging windows and spreading debris inside the embassy compound. No casualties were reported among diplomatic staff. The latest strikes are part of an increase in Russian missile attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials say Moscow has intensified the use of ballistic missiles, creating greater pressure on the country’s air defence systems. President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called for additional air defence support, especially Patriot missile interceptors, which Ukraine says are essential for stopping ballistic missile attacks. Zelensky raised the issue during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. He urged greater support for Ukraine’s air defence capabilities as Russian attacks continue. Trump said discussions over Ukraine’s request to produce Patriot interceptors are still ongoing. However, he expressed concerns about sharing advanced US military technology and said such decisions require careful consideration. Ukraine has faced shortages of Patriot systems as Russian air attacks have increased. Kyiv says these systems remain among the few weapons capable of intercepting high-speed ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued launching retaliatory strikes against Russian targets. Ukrainian officials say their operations are aimed at disrupting military supply routes and damaging facilities linked to Russia’s war efforts.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hits maiden fifty as India be…

India wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored a maiden Twenty20 international half-century in a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday. Put in to bat after losing the toss, Zimbabwe made a meager 125-7 in 20 overs, with all-rounder Wessly Madhevere top-scoring with 39. Led by the 15-year-old prodigy, who struck four sixes and four fours in an 18-ball 50, India cruised to 126-3 with 40 balls to spare. Sooryavanshi became the youngest cricketer to represent India by debuting in a 4-0 T20I drubbing by England this month, scoring 42 runs in three innings. After his whirlwind 50 in Harare, he was out when he got a thick outside edge to a Richard Ngarava delivery and was caught at deep third man by Ben Curran. He departed with the tourists at 68-2. Then, wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan (35) and unbeaten captain Shreyas Iyer (28 not out) ensured India ended a dismal recent T20I run. Before four losses in England, one by an Indian record 125 runs, the reigning T20I world champions lost another series 2-0 in Ireland. Victory at Harare Sports Club was a welcome relief for Iyer, ending a seven-match winless run since he inherited the captaincy. “I think the boys were tremendous. Could not have been happier with my first win,” the skipper told reporters. “There was bounce from a good length and it was also variable. I felt it was there in both innings. We are going to play two more matches here, so this performance gives everyone some confidence.” Earlier, Madhevere was run out after a 58-run sixth-wicket stand with Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 not out). An unwise attempt to secure a second run led to his downfall. India’s bowlers kept Zimbabwe’s batsmen in check, limiting them to a below-par total that proved insufficient against a strong Indian batting lineup. The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second T20I scheduled to take place in the coming days. Sooryavanshi’s explosive innings has been the talk of the cricketing world, with many hailing the teenager as a future star. His ability to score at a rapid pace and play fearless cricket has drawn comparisons to some of the game’s greats. The Indian team will be looking to build on this momentum and secure a series win, while Zimbabwe will aim to bounce back and level the series. The match also marked a positive start for Iyer’s captaincy, as he looks to lead India to success in the shortest format. The series continues to provide exciting cricketing action, with fans eagerly awaiting the next fixtures as both teams battle for supremacy. The win also boosts India’s confidence as they prepare for future challenges, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon. The young Indian team has shown its potential, and Sooryavanshi’s emergence adds depth and excitement to the squad, promising a bright future for Indian cricket.
