Russian missile attack kills nine in Kyiv

KYIV: At least nine people were killed and 28 others injured after Russian ballistic missile strikes hit Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Saturday morning, Ukrainian officials said.

The attack caused heavy damage in several areas of the city. Multiple explosions were reported as missiles struck residential areas and other locations. Emergency teams rushed to the affected sites to rescue people and control fires.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital came under a major missile attack. He said several explosions were heard across the city, while fires broke out and some areas faced power disruptions.

Officials said the Darnytskyi district was among the worst-hit areas. At least seven people were killed there, while 14 others were injured. Two children were among those wounded in the strike.

Another missile strike hit the Solomyanskyi district, killing two people and injuring eight others. A five-storey residential building was partially destroyed, trapping some residents inside. Rescue workers carried out operations to search for survivors and clear the damaged structure.

The attack also affected the area around the Lithuanian embassy. Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry said a missile landed nearby, damaging windows and spreading debris inside the embassy compound. No casualties were reported among diplomatic staff.

The latest strikes are part of an increase in Russian missile attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials say Moscow has intensified the use of ballistic missiles, creating greater pressure on the country’s air defence systems.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called for additional air defence support, especially Patriot missile interceptors, which Ukraine says are essential for stopping ballistic missile attacks.

Zelensky raised the issue during his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. He urged greater support for Ukraine’s air defence capabilities as Russian attacks continue.

Trump said discussions over Ukraine’s request to produce Patriot interceptors are still ongoing. However, he expressed concerns about sharing advanced US military technology and said such decisions require careful consideration.

Ukraine has faced shortages of Patriot systems as Russian air attacks have increased. Kyiv says these systems remain among the few weapons capable of intercepting high-speed ballistic missiles.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued launching retaliatory strikes against Russian targets. Ukrainian officials say their operations are aimed at disrupting military supply routes and damaging facilities linked to Russia’s war efforts.

U.S. Crude oil reserves fall to 45-year low amid rising tensions with Iran

The United States’ crude oil reserves have declined sharply since tensions with Iran began escalating, reaching their lowest level in approximately 45 years, according to recent data. The significant reduction in oil stockpiles has raised concerns among energy experts and policymakers about the country’s energy security and its ability to respond to potential supply disruptions in the future. According to a chart released by Bank of America, the United States currently has enough crude oil supplies to meet approximately 43 days of demand. This marks the lowest level since July 1983, highlighting a substantial decline in available reserves. Analysts consider this an important indicator of the country’s energy preparedness, particularly at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. The decline in reserves comes amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, a key player in global energy markets. Any instability in the region has the potential to affect international oil supplies and prices, making reserve levels an important measure of a country’s ability to withstand disruptions. As geopolitical risks continue to rise, the shrinking U.S. oil inventory has drawn increased attention from financial institutions and energy analysts. Recent figures released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) confirm that both commercial and strategic crude oil reserves have remained under sustained pressure. As of July 10, the country’s commercial crude oil inventories stood at approximately 409.7 million barrels. This represents a level that is nearly 6 percent below the five-year average, indicating that inventories remain significantly lower than what is typically considered normal for this time of year. Commercial oil inventories play a vital role in meeting the daily energy demands of industries, transportation, and consumers. Lower-than-average stockpiles may leave the market more vulnerable to unexpected supply disruptions, refinery outages, or sharp increases in demand, particularly during periods of economic growth or geopolitical instability. In addition to commercial reserves, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR)—the United States’ emergency oil stockpile maintained for national security purposes—has also declined substantially. According to the latest data, the SPR fell to approximately 316.5 million barrels as of July 18, marking its lowest level since April 1983. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is designed to provide emergency supplies during severe energy crises, natural disasters, or major disruptions in global oil markets. The continued reduction in the SPR has prompted discussions among energy experts regarding the need to replenish the reserve and strengthen the country’s emergency preparedness. While portions of the reserve have been released in recent years to help stabilize fuel prices and address supply concerns, rebuilding these stockpiles has become an increasingly important policy consideration. When commercial inventories and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve are combined, the United States’ total crude oil reserves currently stand at approximately 730.8 million barrels. This places overall U.S. oil stockpiles among their lowest levels in more than four decades, underscoring the long-term decline in available reserves. Energy analysts note that reserve levels alone do not necessarily indicate an immediate shortage, as the United States remains one of the world’s largest oil producers. However, lower inventories reduce the country’s flexibility in responding to unexpected supply shocks or prolonged geopolitical crises. The sharp decline in U.S. oil reserves serves as a significant reminder of the challenges facing global energy markets. With geopolitical tensions, fluctuating production levels, and evolving energy policies continuing to shape the industry, maintaining adequate strategic and commercial reserves remains a key priority for ensuring long-term energy security and economic stability in the United States.

Javed Alam Odho described the Mir Raza case as sensitive and said that both the police and the Sindh government wanted to ensure that it was handled appropriately. He said that much of the confusion surrounding the case had emerged because of the medical-legal report. According to him, an earlier report prepared by one doctor had presented in different findings, which contributed to uncertainty surrounding the case. The IGP said that a new committee had now been formed to investigate the matter and restore public confidence in the process. He explained that the previous committee had continued its work on the basis of the evidence that had been provided to it at the time. However, according to Odho, the evidence available to investigators had subsequently changed significantly. In light of the new evidence, he said, there was a need to restart the investigation using a different approach. The new investigation team has also been instructed to maintain open communication with the victim’s family and the media throughout the investigation, he added. Earlier, reports emerged that an attempt had allegedly been made to burn Mir Raza’s body with acid. According to forensic sources, traces of acid were reportedly found on his shirt, adding another dimension to the investigation. Meanwhile, the Sindh government had decided to have the Mir Raza case investigated through a judicial commission involving High Court judges. Sindh Law Minister Zia Lanjar said that a meeting had been held with the Chief Minister regarding the case. He said the government had decided to establish a judicial commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death. His body was recovered two days later from the Gulistan-e-Johar area. Authorities also said that all of his social media accounts had been deactivated one day before his body was recovered, a development that investigators are expected to examine as part of the case. Mir Raza’s family has been seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death. His father previously said that Mir Raza was scheduled to get married on August 30 at Bait-ul-Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. According to his father, Mir Raza had been extremely happy about starting a new chapter of his life and was looking forward to his upcoming marriage. The formation of a new investigation committee and the proposed judicial commission are expected to bring greater clarity to the case and address concerns raised by the victim’s family and the public.
