Bilawal Bhutto declares AJK elections a historic v…

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections a landmark moment for the region.

Addressing a political rally in Mirpur, Bilawal said the elections were not an ordinary political contest. He described them as among the most important elections in AJK’s history.

He said the decisions taken by voters would play a key role in determining the future direction of the region.

Bilawal said previous PPP leaders, including Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari, contributed to securing political and constitutional rights for the people of AJK.

He said he wanted to continue that legacy by working for greater empowerment and opportunities for the people of the region.

The PPP chairman said his party’s agenda focuses on strengthening self-governance, creating employment opportunities and giving people more control over decisions related to their future.

While speaking about Gilgit-Baltistan, Bilawal recalled his party’s promises of greater political rights, employment opportunities and increased autonomy for the people there.

He said the same vision was being presented for AJK, with a focus on improving governance and expanding public participation.

Bilawal added that the people of Kashmir should have access to rights and opportunities similar to those available to citizens in other parts of the region.

He urged voters to make decisions carefully, saying the upcoming elections would shape the political and social future of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The AJK elections are expected to witness strong competition among political parties, with campaigns focusing on development, governance, employment and regional empowerment.

    Makkah pact cements Pakistan-Türkiye-Saudi defenc…

The newly signed defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye marks a significant step towards formalising their longstanding security and strategic cooperation, while establishing a framework focused on collective defence and regional stability. The trilateral partnership brings together three countries with strong historical, political, economic and defence ties. Their cooperation has grown over decades and is now being shaped into a more structured security framework amid a rapidly changing regional environment. The agreement comes as conflicts, emerging security threats and evolving forms of warfare continue to reshape the strategic landscape. Supporters of the pact say closer coordination among the three countries can contribute to regional stability and strengthen their ability to respond collectively to security challenges. Focus on defence and deterrence The agreement has been described as defensive rather than offensive. Its central principle is collective security, under which an armed attack against one member is considered a threat to all three. The arrangement is aimed at strengthening deterrence and reducing the possibility of conflict by demonstrating that aggression against one country could trigger a coordinated response from the other two. The framework is not intended to target any particular country, according to the explanation of the agreement. Instead, it seeks to promote peace, stability and security through stronger defence cooperation. Complementary strengths Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye bring different strategic capabilities to the partnership. Pakistan contributes extensive military experience and defence expertise, including experience in managing complex security challenges. Saudi Arabia brings its strategic position in the region, economic strength and political influence. Türkiye contributes advanced defence technology, a growing defence industry and substantial industrial capabilities. Together, these capabilities could provide the three countries with a broader platform for strategic coordination and defence preparedness. The partnership could also encourage greater cooperation in areas such as military coordination, intelligence sharing, defence technology and strategic planning. Pakistan’s regional role The agreement also highlights Pakistan’s expanding engagement with different regional and global actors. Islamabad maintains strategic and diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye while also engaging Iran, China, the United States and other international partners. This network of relationships could allow Pakistan to play a constructive role in regional diplomacy and help facilitate communication among countries with differing interests. The effectiveness of the trilateral framework, however, will depend on how consistently the three countries translate the agreement into practical cooperation. Not a NATO-style alliance The partnership has also been described as not a Muslim NATO and not a mechanism for providing nuclear protection to its members. Instead, it is presented as a defensive arrangement designed to strengthen collective deterrence and security cooperation while supporting regional peace. The agreement effectively formalises much of the strategic cooperation that Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have developed over the years.

Sindh announces August 4 school holiday

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in observance of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). According to an official notification issued by the department, the holiday will be observed on 20th Safar 1448 AH, marking the annual commemoration of Chehlum. The decision applies to all government and privately managed schools operating under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department throughout Sindh. The notification stated that the closure was approved following a decision taken during a meeting of the provincial Steering Committee held on February 12, 2026. It confirmed that all educational institutions under the department’s jurisdiction would remain closed on August 4 to facilitate the observance of the religious occasion. Chehlum is observed every year on the 20th of Safar and marks the conclusion of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and companions in the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The occasion holds immense religious significance for Muslims, particularly for those who participate in mourning gatherings and commemorative processions held across the country. As part of the annual observances, mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah are expected to take place in several cities and towns across Sindh. Thousands of devotees traditionally participate in these events to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala. In light of the large public gatherings expected during Chehlum, the Sindh Home Department has also announced additional security measures aimed at maintaining law and order throughout the province. A day before the school holiday notification was issued, the Home Department imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding for the day of Chehlum. The temporary restriction is intended to strengthen security arrangements and minimise the risk of any untoward incidents during the religious processions and gatherings. Authorities have clarified that the ban forms part of a broader security plan implemented each year for major religious occasions. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the measures while facilitating the safe conduct of mourning events. In a separate notification, the Sindh Home Department also announced the extension of Section 144 across the province for another month. The renewed restrictions came into effect on August 1 and will remain in force as part of ongoing efforts to preserve public order. Under Section 144, several activities have been prohibited throughout Sindh, including wall chalking, public rallies, demonstrations, and the open display of weapons. The restrictions are designed to prevent any activities that could disrupt peace or pose security concerns during the mourning period. The provincial government has urged citizens to cooperate with the authorities and follow the issued guidelines to help ensure that Chehlum observances are conducted peacefully and securely across Sindh.

Call for equal relief for DG Khan school tragedy v…

A heartfelt appeal has surfaced on social media, urging Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to announce financial assistance for the families affected by the Little Scholars School tragedy in Dera Ghazi Khan. The appeal seeks compensation for the families of four children who lost their lives and 16 others who suffered injuries when the school roof collapsed on May 7. It calls for a relief package similar to the one recently announced for the victims of the academy roof collapse in Kahna, Lahore. The families of the Little Scholars School victims expressed deep sorrow over the Kahna tragedy and prayed for the departed souls, strength for the bereaved families and a speedy recovery for those injured. According to reports cited in the appeal, the Punjab government announced Rs2 million for each family that lost a loved one in the Kahna incident and Rs500,000 for each injured person. The appeal welcomed the decision but questioned why the Dera Ghazi Khan victims had not received similar financial support. It highlighted that both incidents involved the collapse of educational building roofs and caused the deaths and injuries of schoolchildren. The appeal stressed that negligence and carelessness require serious attention in both cases and that families in Dera Ghazi Khan deserve the same compassion and assistance. The statement also noted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced relief for the Kahna victims but has yet to announce compensation for the Dera Ghazi Khan families or visit the city to offer condolences. This, it said, has disappointed the victims’ families and local residents. The appeal urged the chief minister to treat all affected families equally and announce financial assistance for the deceased and injured children of the Little Scholars School tragedy. It also called on elected representatives from Dera Ghazi Khan and the district administration to formally approach the Punjab government for a relief package. The appeal concluded that no financial assistance can replace a child’s life, but government support can provide some relief and show solidarity with grieving families.

Rick and Morty season 9 finale leaves fans heartbroken

The season 9 finale of Rick and Morty has left fans emotional after delivering one of the series’ darkest and most heartbreaking endings. Titled Field of Dreams, the episode shifts its focus to Morty as he embarks on an emotional journey across different realities, forcing him to confront difficult truths about himself, Rick and the meaning of family. The finale has since sparked widespread discussion among viewers, many calling it one of the show’s most powerful episodes to date. The episode begins with Morty travelling through multiple dimensions, attending the funerals of alternate versions of himself in search of a sense of belonging. His journey eventually leads him to a parallel Smith family mourning the loss of their own Morty. Unlike the dysfunctional family he knows, this version has distanced itself from Rick because of his destructive behaviour and alcoholism, creating what appears to be a healthier home environment. For a brief moment, Morty experiences the warmth and stability he has always wanted. The alternate family treats him with kindness, making him question whether his own life could have been different. However, the illusion of a perfect family soon begins to unravel as Morty’s presence unintentionally changes their lives, proving that no reality is truly free from pain or consequences. The emotional core of the finale centres on Professor Rick, a version of Rick who abandoned his destructive lifestyle and spent years attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings after losing Diane. Morty eventually tells him the truth about Diane’s fate, offering him comfort but also reopening old wounds. The revelation ultimately pushes Professor Rick back toward alcohol, suggesting that even the best versions of Rick cannot completely escape their past. As Morty watches yet another family fall apart, he begins blaming himself for the destruction around him. Believing that he brings chaos wherever he goes, he returns to his own dimension emotionally defeated. The closing scene features Rick taking Morty on a motorcycle ride before drunkenly declaring that he is Morty’s father. Rather than rejecting the statement, Morty quietly accepts it, implying that he now sees his future as inseparable from Rick’s influence. The ending has particularly resonated with fans because it suggests Morty is finally accepting that he may become more like Rick than he ever wanted. Instead of offering hope, the finale presents a bleak emotional conclusion in which Morty sees himself as someone who damages the lives of those around him. Critics have described the episode as one of the series’ most mature explorations of identity, trauma and family relationships. A post-credit scene hints that more interdimensional chaos lies ahead, setting up future storylines for season 10. While the finale leaves several questions unanswered, it succeeds in delivering an emotionally devastating conclusion that has earned praise from critics and viewers alike. Many fans have called Field of Dreams one of the strongest Rick and Morty finales ever produced, applauding its willingness to place emotional storytelling above spectacle.
