Pakistan accumulates 6.25maf water in dams as monsoon inflows surge

Pakistan’s water reservoirs have stored more than 6.25 million acre-feet (MAF) of water during the ongoing Kharif season, bolstered by surging monsoon inflows across major national dams.

An official from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) confirmed that Tarbela Dam currently holds 3.395 MAF, Mangla Dam holds 3.011 MAF, and Chashma Barrage contains 0.121 MAF.

At Tarbela, inflows reached 285,700 cusecs against regulated outflows of 210,000 cusecs. Chashma Barrage recorded inflows of 263,700 cusecs and outflows of 225,000 cusecs, while Mangla Dam logged 80,500 cusecs in inflows alongside reduced outflows of 10,000 cusecs to rapidly build capacity.

Due to heavy monsoon rains creating flood-like conditions at both major reservoirs, WAPDA and IRSA are managing operations cautiously to regulate inflows safely and conserve water.

Downstream of Kotri Barrage, water releases were kept at a minimal 0.138 MAF between April 1 and July 21 to prevent seawater intrusion into the Indus delta, though downstream discharges are projected to increase as peak monsoon flows continue.

All four provinces are currently receiving their complete indented irrigation allocations to support agricultural activities during the Kharif season.

Water managers continue to monitor basin conditions closely, including at Marala Headworks on the Chenab River, where inflows rose to 102,400 cusecs with outflows kept at 80,100 cusecs following catchment rainfall.

However, IRSA expressed concern over the inability to independently verify the exact origin and scale of upstream river flows, as India has suspended real-time hydrological data sharing under the Indus Waters Treaty.

UK Parliament hears fresh concerns over human rights in Indian-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir

The human rights situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) came under renewed scrutiny in the House of Lords on Thursday after Lord Qurban Hussain urged the British Government to clarify its position in light of a Genocide Watch report published earlier this year. During the debate, Lord Qurban Hussain said the report warned that the situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir had reached a critical stage and alleged that eight of the ten recognised stages associated with genocide had already been reached. He asked how seriously the British Government viewed the report and what action it was taking to help prevent further deterioration. The British peer, who said members of his family live on both sides of the Line of Control, urged the Government to explain its assessment of the report and its approach towards the human rights situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Responding for the Government, Lord Collins of Highbury, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), reiterated the UK’s longstanding position on human rights. He said the UK continues to express concern over violence and loss of life and supports full, transparent and impartial investigations into allegations of abuse by Indian police and security forces. He added that the British Government continues to raise human rights issues with India through diplomatic channels. Lord Qurban Hussain’s intervention highlights continuing concern among a number of British parliamentarians over the human rights situation in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, with renewed calls for accountability, respect for fundamental rights and a peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute.

China’s Saindak copper mine in Pakistan faces su…

China’s long-running copper mining project in Pakistan is facing growing operational challenges as repeated militant attacks in Balochistan disrupt supply routes connected to the mine. The Saindak copper and gold mine, located in Balochistan’s Chagai district, is considered one of China’s oldest mining investments in Pakistan and remains its only major copper interest in the country. Analysts say ongoing security issues have created difficulties for transporting materials and maintaining regular operations. The attacks along key routes have raised concerns about what some analysts describe as an “economic blockade,” potentially affecting the movement of supplies required for mining activities and the shipment of copper produced at the site. Copper is a strategically important commodity for China, which is the world’s largest consumer of the metal due to its extensive manufacturing, energy, and technology industries. Any disruption to supply sources can create concerns for industries dependent on stable copper availability. The Saindak project has long been viewed as an important symbol of Pakistan-China economic cooperation. The mine has contributed to Pakistan’s mineral sector while providing China with access to copper resources. However, security challenges in Balochistan have repeatedly affected development projects and infrastructure networks. The province has witnessed several militant attacks targeting government installations, security forces, and economic projects. Officials and security agencies have increased efforts to protect strategic assets and transportation routes, but continued instability remains a major challenge for investors operating in the region. Experts say maintaining security around mining operations is essential not only for the continuity of the Saindak project but also for attracting future foreign investment in Pakistan’s mineral resources. As global demand for critical minerals continues to rise, the stability of resource-rich regions like Balochistan will remain a key factor in determining the future of mining cooperation between Pakistan and international partners.
