Gold prices rise for third consecutive session amid softer US economic data

Gold prices advanced for a third consecutive session on Tuesday as expectations of a US interest rate hike in the coming months weakened, while investors turned their attention to the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting for indications about the future direction of monetary policy.

Spot gold gained 0.2% to $4,424.28 per ounce by 0130 GMT. US gold futures for December delivery also increased 0.2%, reaching $4,480.90 per ounce.

The precious metal has received support from growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve may maintain its current interest-rate stance following a series of weaker-than-expected economic indicators.

The US dollar remained close to multi-month lows against a basket of major currencies, providing additional support to gold and other dollar-denominated commodities. A weaker greenback generally makes gold more affordable for buyers holding other currencies, potentially boosting demand in international markets.

IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said gold’s recent advance was being supported by softer US economic data released last week. The data has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could leave borrowing costs unchanged rather than move towards another rate increase.

Gold typically benefits from lower interest rates because the metal does not generate interest or dividends. When yields on interest-bearing assets decline, the opportunity cost of holding bullion becomes comparatively lower, making gold more attractive to investors.

According to a recent Reuters poll of economists, most analysts expect the US central bank to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its next meeting and maintain the rate through the end of the year.

Market expectations have also shifted significantly. The probability of a quarter-point rate increase in September has fallen sharply, with traders now assigning nearly a 65% probability that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged. The change followed unexpected job losses in July, softer-than-anticipated consumer price inflation and weaker retail sales data.

Investors are now closely watching the release of the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes, scheduled for Wednesday. The minutes could provide further insight into policymakers’ views on inflation, employment and the timing of any potential future rate adjustments.

Geopolitical developments are also contributing to demand for gold as a traditional safe-haven asset. Sycamore said bullion appeared to be regaining some of its safe-haven appeal despite higher bond yields, particularly amid renewed tensions surrounding Iran and the United States.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would move towards a “fully offensive” military posture after efforts to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict with Washington stalled. The development came as the United States ruled out extending a temporary ceasefire arrangement, adding to uncertainty in financial markets.

Higher geopolitical risks can encourage investors to increase exposure to traditionally defensive assets such as gold, particularly when uncertainty surrounding economic and monetary policy is already elevated.

Other precious metals also recorded mixed movements during Tuesday’s session. Spot silver climbed 0.9% to $66.40 per ounce, extending gains in the broader precious-metals market.

Platinum edged 0.2% higher to $1,772.75 per ounce, while palladium moved in the opposite direction, declining 0.3% to $1,330.05 per ounce.

Taiwan to test shifting weapons production during major military exercise

Taiwan will carry out a new military exercise next month to test whether it can continue producing weapons if key defence facilities come under attack during a conflict with China. The drills will include relocating arms production lines and converting civilian factories into military manufacturing sites to ensure the armed forces continue receiving essential equipment even if major supply hubs are damaged. The exercise will take place as part of Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang war games, scheduled from August 5 to August 14. According to the Ministry of National Defense, the scenario will simulate China using its regular military exercises as cover to prepare for a full scale invasion. Taiwan’s armed forces will respond by immediately increasing combat readiness and launching rapid defensive operations. One of the main objectives is to determine whether industrial production can be spread across different locations without disrupting the supply of military equipment. Officials say maintaining manufacturing capacity during wartime is essential because China would likely target command centers, ports, logistics networks and defence factories early in any military campaign. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has never ruled out using force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan strongly rejects those claims, maintaining that it is already a self governed and independent nation. Major General Lu Wen-yuan, who heads the Joint Operations Division, said the exercise will assume that Chinese forces use their routine annual military drills to hide preparations for a large scale assault. Under the scenario, Taiwan will activate emergency measures and begin moving critical defence production away from vulnerable locations. The drills will include the simulated relocation of the Armaments Bureau’s 202nd Arsenal in Taipei. Civilian factories responsible for assembling complete military systems will also be mobilized after emergency orders are issued. The exercise is designed to measure how quickly industries can shift operations while continuing to meet the military’s needs during a crisis. Taiwan will also examine its ability to keep vital shipping routes open if conflict disrupts normal transport. The navy and coast guard will conduct joint operations using personnel, equipment and live ammunition. These exercises will include escorting shipments of essential supplies, protecting coastal areas, carrying out maritime law enforcement missions and testing upgraded coast guard vessels. The military planning comes as Taiwan reports a noticeable increase in Chinese coast guard activity around the island. Officials in Taipei believe the growing presence could signal greater pressure on Taiwan’s eastern coastline and threaten sea routes that are critical for importing fuel, food and other strategic supplies. For the first time, the Han Kuang exercises will also include a nationwide communications test. Mobile internet speeds will be deliberately reduced during parts of the ten day exercise to assess how the public and emergency services would communicate if network capacity became limited because of natural disasters or military action. Authorities hope the test will help identify weaknesses in emergency communication systems and improve the island’s ability to function during a prolonged crisis. The expanded drills reflect Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its overall resilience against potential military threats. By preparing industries, transport networks and communication systems for wartime conditions, officials aim to ensure that the island can continue supporting both its armed forces and civilian population even if key infrastructure comes under sustained attack.

US Forest Service chief reportedly pressed staff to deploy extra aircraft for fire near his Idaho ranch

Michael Boren, the US Undersecretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and Environment who oversees the US Forest Service, reportedly pressured agency staff to deploy additional aircraft to a small 7-acre wildfire burning near his private property in Idaho. According to agency communications and current and former Forest Service officials, the Cabin Creek fire began on 12 July 2026 in the Sawtooth National Forest due to an unattended campfire. Boren, who owns a 480-acre ranch in the nearby Sawtooth National Recreation Area, repeatedly contacted regional and national operations leadership to question why more aircraft were not assigned to the blaze. Flight data reveals that approximately nine aircraft—including air tankers, tactical planes, and helicopters—were dispatched to the small fire, with some assets diverted from other active wildfires in Idaho. Insiders noted that the emergency response was unusually heavy for a minor outbreak that ground crews could easily access and which posed no immediate threat to life or major infrastructure. In response, a spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture maintained that Boren merely reported the fire as any local landowner would and denied that he ordered or pressured staff to shift resources. The fire was fully contained by 15 July.

Pakistan secures US $629.5 million in agreements following landmark Pakistan-China Pharmaceutical B2B Conference

Syed Mustafa Kamal, Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination has announced a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector following the successful Pakistan-China Pharmaceutical Business-to-Business (B2B) Conference held in Islamabad on 17–18 July. Addressing a press conference, the Minister said the conference marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to transform Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry into a globally competitive sector, attract foreign investment, strengthen local manufacturing, and reduce dependence on imported pharmaceutical products. “The purpose of sharing this success is to present a positive image of Pakistan to our people and the world. While challenges exist, it is equally important to highlight our achievements that restore confidence in Pakistan’s economy and its investment potential,” the Minister said. The two-day conference brought together 240 Chinese delegates representing 140 leading Chinese pharmaceutical companies and 430 Pakistani delegates from 210 local companies, making it one of the largest Pakistan-China engagements ever held exclusively for the pharmaceutical sector. To maximize business outcomes, the Ministry of National Health Services facilitated six weeks of virtual business matchmaking before the conference, ensuring participating companies entered the event with well-developed business discussions rather than first-time introductions. As a result, the conference generated 340 bilateral business meetings, culminating in: 22 commercial agreements worth US$629.5 million 84 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with an estimated value of approximately US$800 million, many of which are expected to mature into formal investment agreements. The signed agreements span six strategic sub-sectors critical to the future of Pakistan’s healthcare industry: Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) – 2 agreements Local Vaccine Production – 8 agreements Clinical Trials – 2 agreements Generic Formulations & Injectables – 2 agreements Medical Devices Manufacturing – 8 agreements The Minister emphasized that the government’s objective extends beyond signing MoUs, focusing instead on legally binding commercial agreements that lead to tangible investments, technology transfer, industrial growth, and employment generation. Highlighting the government’s broader pharmaceutical reforms, the Minister noted that Pakistan has, for the first time, developed and approved a National Local Vaccine Production Policy, creating the policy framework necessary for domestic vaccine manufacturing. Currently, Pakistan administers 13 vaccines under its national immunization programme, all of which are imported. The new policy aims to establish local production capacity, improve health security, and reduce import dependence. The Minister also identified several strategic priorities being pursued jointly with Chinese partners, including: Development of Pakistan’s clinical trials ecosystem; Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbal medicines; Local manufacturing and export of medical devices; Establishment of vocational and technical training programmes for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology workforce; and Indigenous production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), as Pakistan currently imports approximately 95% of the raw materials used to manufacture medicines despite producing nearly 85% of its pharmaceutical products locally. The Minister observed that healthcare is a permanent and growing global industry, and with Pakistan’s population exceeding 250 million, strengthening domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing has become both an economic and strategic necessity. He further highlighted the government’s regulatory reforms, particularly within the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), where approximately 85% of regulatory processes have now been digitized. The reforms have substantially reduced processing times, enhanced transparency, minimized human intervention, and improved ease of doing business. As an example, the Minister noted that the registration of medical devices, which previously required years to complete, can now be processed entirely online, with approvals being issued within 20 days, significantly improving investor confidence. The Minister acknowledged the collective efforts of the Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing, led by Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, the Ministry of National Health Services, DRAP, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), the Board of Investment (BOI), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Islamabad Police, law enforcement agencies, and all public officials whose coordinated efforts ensured the successful organization of the conference. He also appreciated the active participation of the Pakistani pharmaceutical industry and Chinese business partners, whose collaboration translated business dialogue into concrete investment commitments. Concluding the press conference, the Minister described the conference as the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership between Pakistan and China in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the signed agreements are implemented expeditiously and translated into operational projects that strengthen Pakistan’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, create employment opportunities, increase exports, and contribute to national economic growth.

Middle East braces for intense heatwave as tempera…

DUBAI: A fresh wave of extreme heat is set to grip the Middle East this week, with temperatures forecast to approach 50 degrees Celsius across several countries, prompting weather authorities to issue alerts over dangerous conditions. The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has warned that the coming days will bring soaring temperatures across the region, particularly affecting the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Kuwait, and eastern Saudi Arabia, where prolonged exposure to the heat could pose serious health risks. According to meteorologists, desert regions in the UAE are expected to experience the highest temperatures, with some areas likely to approach the 50°C mark. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours and to remain well hydrated. The latest forecasts indicate that Al Shawamekh in Abu Dhabi has already recorded temperatures exceeding 50°C, highlighting the intensity of the current weather conditions. Kuwait is also expected to experience extreme heat, with temperatures predicted to reach 48°C in the coming days, while parts of Iraq and eastern Saudi Arabia are likely to face similarly scorching conditions. Despite the widespread heat, forecasters say some eastern and southern parts of the UAE, including Fujairah, could receive rainfall by Thursday as unstable weather develops over mountainous regions. The weather authority has also issued warnings for strong winds, reduced visibility, and dust storms, which may affect road travel and outdoor activities across several parts of the region. Health experts advise people to stay indoors whenever possible, drink plenty of water, wear light-colored clothing and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during midday when temperatures are expected to peak. The renewed heatwave follows a summer of record-breaking temperatures across several parts of the world, with climate scientists warning that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense due to global climate change. Governments across the Gulf have increasingly introduced measures to protect workers and residents during the hottest months, including restrictions on outdoor labor during peak daytime hours and expanded public awareness campaigns on heat-related illnesses. As the latest heatwave builds across the region, authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely while urging the public to follow official safety advisories. With temperatures expected to remain exceptionally high over the coming days, residents are being encouraged to take extra precautions to minimize the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Punjab CM engages PML-N legislators to improve pro…

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has intensified her engagement with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) legislators by holding regular meetings aimed at addressing their concerns and improving coordination between elected representatives and the provincial administration. As part of the initiative, the chief minister met PML-N members of the Punjab Assembly from Bahawalnagar on Friday to discuss the political situation, ongoing development projects, and issues affecting local communities. The meeting followed a similar interaction with lawmakers from Mandi Bahauddin held last week, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen communication within the party. The renewed outreach comes amid concerns voiced by several lawmakers, particularly those representing rural constituencies, who believe government officials and police are not responding adequately when they raise public issues on behalf of their constituents. Since assuming office in February 2024, Maryam Nawaz has maintained a policy of keeping political influence out of administrative and police appointments, insisting that postings and transfers should be based solely on merit. While the move has been praised as an effort to promote transparency and professionalism, some legislators have argued that it has reduced their ability to effectively advocate for their voters. Party sources said most lawmakers are not seeking authority over appointments but expect district officials and law enforcement agencies to respond respectfully and seriously when they present genuine public grievances. They believe stronger coordination between elected representatives and the administration is essential for resolving local issues and maintaining public confidence. According to senior party figures, the chief minister has been encouraged to hold regular consultations with lawmakers to ensure their concerns are heard directly while preserving her commitment to merit-based governance. The Punjab government has reiterated that its policy of transparent appointments remains unchanged. Officials maintain that the administration is committed to eliminating political interference in the bureaucracy while ensuring that public service delivery continues to improve across the province. The latest meetings are being viewed as an effort to strengthen internal party coordination, enhance communication with legislators, and ensure that public concerns are addressed more effectively without compromising administrative reforms.
