AI could replace millions of jobs, warns “Godfather of AI”

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is often said to have the potential to eliminate a large number of jobs.

According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, AI could affect almost every profession and may lead to shorter working hours. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates believes that, gradually, humans may become unnecessary for many tasks.

Elon Musk has predicted that within the next two decades, most people may no longer need to go to work. Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton is widely known as the “Godfather of AI.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work on artificial intelligence.

Geoffrey Hinton who is associated with the University of Toronto in Canada has warned about the potential negative impact of AI on employment. Speaking at Georgetown University, he said he believes AI could lead to widespread unemployment with millions of people potentially losing their jobs.

He explained that companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure including data centers and chips to improve automation.

According to Hinton, companies will seek returns on these investments by selling AI systems capable of performing tasks currently carried out by human workers at a lower cost. He said that the desire for greater profits could ultimately lead AI tools to replace human employees.

However, Hinton acknowledged that AI technology would also create new employment opportunities. Nevertheless, he believes the number of new jobs may not be sufficient to replace all the jobs that could be lost. He also admitted that it is extremely difficult to predict the long-term effects of AI technology.

Hinton has previously issued warnings about the risks associated with AI. At one point, he estimated that there was a 10% to 20% chance that AI could eventually contribute to the destruction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential dangers of AI.

Hinton acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding AI can be troubling because no one knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like in the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it.

Earlier, in an August 2025 podcast appearance, Hinton said that AI is learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand and that there may be no reliable way to simply switch it off.

Hinton’s research helped lay the foundations of machine learning, the technology that enables computers to replicate aspects of human intelligence. However, in recent years, he has been campaigning for AI to be developed and used safely.

In 2023, Hinton left his position at Google saying that bad actors could potentially use the technology to harm other people.

In a recent interview, when asked about the pace of AI development, he said that most experts in the field currently believe that eventually possibly within the next 20 years, humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans.

He described this as a frightening prospect, comparing current AI technology to a three-year-old child, while noting that children grow up very quickly.

According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He explained that the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the need for humans to develop greater physical strength because people began relying on increasingly powerful machines.

He believes humanity is now doing something similar with human intelligence potentially creating technology that could surpass human intellectual capabilities.

When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said that it would largely depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology.

In his view, AI could have remarkable benefits in the medical field and could improve the efficiency of almost every industry. However, he stressed that society needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of AI technology.

China’s Chongqing East becomes world’s largest railway station

Almost everyone has travelled by train at some point and has seen railway stations. But do you know which country is home to the world’s largest railway station? If you do not, here is the answer: the world’s largest railway station is located in China and is nothing short of an architectural marvel. China is already known for numerous engineering wonders ranging from remarkable bridges to the world’s largest high-speed railway network. Chongqing East Railway Station Chongqing East Railway Station located in southwestern China is the world’s largest railway station in terms of area. It was opened to the public in June 2025. The railway station covers an area of approximately 13 million square feet equivalent to around 170 football fields. It is also about five times larger than New York’s Grand Central Terminal. The station has 15 platforms and 29 railway tracks and during peak hours, it can accommodate around 16,000 passengers per hour. Around 16,500 tonnes of steel were used for its roof. However, the most remarkable feature of the station is the speed at which it was constructed and it was built on top of a mountain. The Chongqing region is mountainous which has traditionally made the development of transportation infrastructure particularly challenging. The station was constructed in just 38 months with the help of around 40,000 workers and a fleet of robotic machinery. Although 38 months may seem like a long period, in many countries, simply obtaining approval for projects of this scale can take longer than that.

  • Night or Morning when to charge your phone?

Many smartphone users wonder whether it is better to charge their phone overnight or wait until the morning. Some people plug in their phone before going to bed while others prefer charging it after they wake up.  According to technology experts both methods are generally safe but one may be better for your battery’s long term health. Modern smartphones are designed with smart charging technology that helps protect the battery. Once the battery reaches 100%, the phone automatically reduces or stops charging to prevent overcharging. This means leaving your phone plugged in overnight is usually not dangerous and it is very unlikely to cause the battery to explode or become damaged under normal conditions. However experts say that keeping the phone connected to the charger for many hours is not always the best habit. Even after the battery is full a small amount of voltage can remain which may slowly add stress to the battery over time. If this happens every night for months or years it could slightly reduce the battery’s overall lifespan. For this reason many experts recommend charging your phone in the morning whenever possible.  You can unplug it as soon as it reaches the charge level you need helping reduce unnecessary stress on the battery. Battery experts also suggest keeping your phone’s battery between 20% and 80% most of the time.  Staying within this range reduces chemical wear inside the battery and can help it last longer. If overnight charging is your only option there is no need to worry.  Most modern Android phones and iPhones include features such as Adaptive Charging or Optimized Battery Charging. These features learn your daily routine and slow down charging overnight reaching 100% only shortly before you usually unplug the phone. This helps reduce long term battery wear. Heat is another important factor that affects battery life. Using your phone for heavy gaming video editing or other demanding tasks while it is charging can cause it to become very hot. High temperatures can shorten the battery’s lifespan more quickly than charging overnight. Experts also recommend using the original charger or a trusted high quality replacement. Cheap or low quality chargers and cables may not provide stable power and could affect battery performance. It is also a good idea to avoid charging your phone under a pillow blanket or in any place where heat cannot escape easily. Another useful tip is to avoid letting the battery drop to 0% on a regular basis. Instead try to charge it when it falls to around 20%, and if possible unplug it when it reaches about 80%. In the end overnight charging is much safer than it used to be because of modern battery technology. However if you want your phone’s battery to stay healthy for as long as possible charging when needed using adaptive charging features avoiding excessive heat and keeping the battery between 20% and 80% are the best habits to follow.

Pakistan’s health system requires lasting reform

By Raja Ashraf A country’s healthcare system is judged not only by the number of hospitals it has but also by whether people can access timely, affordable, and quality medical care. In Pakistan, public confidence in the health sector has weakened due to persistent challenges, including shortages of healthcare professionals, rising medicine prices, under-resourced hospitals, and the continued presence of unqualified medical practitioners. These issues require comprehensive and long-term reforms rather than short-term policy responses Healthcare is a fundamental right closely linked to Article 9 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which guarantees the right to life. The Supreme Court has interpreted this provision to include access to essential healthcare services. Pakistan is also a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which commits the country to progressively ensuring the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for its citizens. One of the most pressing concerns is the shortage of qualified doctors in rural and underserved regions. Although medical institutions produce thousands of graduates every year, many public health facilities outside major cities continue to face vacant positions. As a result, many communities struggle to obtain even basic healthcare services and are often forced to travel long distances for treatment. The migration of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to foreign countries has further weakened the healthcare system. Better salaries, improved working conditions, career opportunities, and greater security abroad encourage many skilled professionals to leave Pakistan, creating significant gaps in public hospitals and specialized medical services. The pharmaceutical sector also faces increasing challenges. Some multinational pharmaceutical companies have reduced their presence in Pakistan, raising concerns about future medicine availability and investor confidence. While local pharmaceutical manufacturers continue to meet much of the country’s demand, policymakers must create a stable regulatory and economic environment that supports both domestic production and responsible international investment. The rising cost of medicines has become another major burden for families already affected by inflation. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases often require lifelong treatment, making affordability a growing concern. At the same time, the continued circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines highlights weaknesses in regulation and quality control, despite improvements in oversight by regulatory authorities. Public hospitals also frequently experience shortages of essential medicines and emergency supplies, forcing patients to purchase drugs from private pharmacies. This increases treatment costs and can delay critical medical care during emergencies. Ensuring uninterrupted medicine supplies in government hospitals should remain a national priority. Another persistent issue is the presence of unqualified medical practitioners, commonly known as quacks, particularly in areas where licensed healthcare providers are scarce. Tackling this problem requires stronger enforcement of existing laws alongside improved access to qualified medical professionals. Pakistan’s healthcare challenges extend beyond these issues to include inadequate public health funding, ageing hospital infrastructure, weak primary healthcare services, limited mental health facilities, and uneven implementation of health policies across provinces. Addressing these problems requires a comprehensive national strategy focused on increasing healthcare investment, improving working conditions for medical professionals, strengthening medicine regulation, modernizing pharmaceutical oversight, expanding preventive care, and reinforcing primary healthcare services. Investing in healthcare is not merely a public expense—it is an investment in human capital, economic growth, and national development. Pakistan possesses skilled healthcare professionals, reputable medical institutions, and a capable pharmaceutical industry. With sound policymaking, stronger governance, and sustained investment, these strengths can be transformed into a healthcare system that guarantees every citizen safe, affordable, and quality healthcare. The need for reform is no longer in question; the real challenge is ensuring that action is not delayed any further.

  • Whistling Past the Graveyard

By Syed Hashim Abbas Bukhari  In the age-old debate about the pros and perils of Artificial Intelligence (AI), one of the main stances of the Luddites is the absence of emotions in AI thus making it ill equipped to handle situations requiring empathy and emotional intelligence. However, one could argue that this point of distinction between humans and AI is rapidly vanishing as we witness our younger generation increasingly suffering from the phenomenon of emotional desensitization. Let us take a walk through the realms of social media. When our country was fighting a war, the younger generation was engaged in its own meme war on social media, seemingly unaware of the seriousness and gravity of the situation. Whether the world was on the brink of World War 3, facing a new global pandemic or staring down the barrel of rocketing oil prices, the reaction of the younger generation showed alarming levels of emotional desensitization. Instead of intellectual debates, protests, or striving to find a solution, the younger generation indulges in creating memes designed to generate nothing more than likes, shares, and comments. According to researchers, emotional desensitization is a form of emotional numbing or habituation where a situation that triggered a strong feeling no longer affects you as intensely. This is becoming a rising area of concern for our elders who equate our response to these dire and serious situations as a lack of maturity and emotional sensitivity on our part. The argument presented over here is that owing to our access to endless streams of information our generation should be more emotionally evolved as compared to our predecessors. The reality, however, seems contrary to this belief, as our exposure to warfare, natural disasters, and other calamities increases, our levels of emotional sensitivity has seemingly taken a nosedive. The question that should be raised is whether we should be classified as emotionally desensitized or is it our generation just whistling past the graveyard. It is a basic human psychology that when we experience grief or trauma, which is too much to process, we use various coping mechanisms. For some of us it may be anger, humor, violence or isolation but we all have coping mechanisms enabling us to survive various emotionally charged experiences. A study of social behaviors reveals that with the passage of time we have changed our coping mechanisms. In the past humans used to display their emotional trauma or suffering through anger and sought comfort through social gatherings. In the case of our generation, social media has taken the place of social gatherings, and anger has been replaced with humor. Thus, the endless stream of memes, reels, and shorts on every emotionally charged event.  Our stance on mental health, gender equality, racism, climate change, and countless other previously ignored or snubbed issues prove us to be a more emotionally sensitive and mature generation. We are the generation that believe that actions speak louder than words. We may seem to be whistling past the various graveyards or making light of serious situations but we are the generation that is breaking down the glass ceiling, bringing down the walls of inequality, and trying to build a society that embodies the morals and values of justice, kindness, and integrity for all. With each new generation the prioritization of emotionally sensitive areas may change, the coping mechanisms may be adapted according to the changing environment, or ways to display emotions may evolve but the thing to understand is that we haven’t become emotionally disengaged or desensitized, we are only embracing our emotions in our own distinct way. As Hazrat Ali (AS) said: “Do not force your children to behave like you, for surely they have been created for a time which is different to your time.”

  • 3 Houseplants that may attract lizards

Lizards often appear in homes during the summer especially in kitchens bathrooms and near indoor plants. While they are usually harmless many people find them unpleasant. They can also become a hygiene concern if they come into contact with food. Experts say some houseplants may attract lizards because they provide cool damp and shaded places where the reptiles like to hide. One of the most common plants is the money plant. Its large leaves and moist soil create a cool environment making it a favorite hiding place for lizards. If the vine grows up a wall or support lizards may climb and rest among the leaves. Another plant that may attract lizards is jasmine. The plant offers a cool leafy space and some experts believe its dense growth makes it a comfortable shelter for lizards. Marigold plants may also attract them. Their thick leaves create shade giving lizards a safe place to hide during hot weather. The good news is that you do not need to remove these plants. There are a few simple home remedies that may help keep lizards away. Placing camphor tablets near plant pots is one popular method because lizards dislike their strong smell. You can also place half an onion or a few garlic cloves near the pots as their odor may help repel lizards. Another natural option is bay leaves whose strong scent is believed to discourage lizards from staying near plants. Experts also recommend keeping the area around plants clean. Dry leaves weeds and garden waste can attract insects which are the main food source for lizards. By reducing insects and maintaining good hygiene around your plants and home you can also reduce the chances of lizards appearing.
