How to protect your phone screen without protector?

If you have recently purchased a flagship smartphone, there is a good chance that you may not need a screen protector. In fact, most flagship smartphones now come with Corning Gorilla Glass protection which makes them highly resistant to scratches.

However, many people still use screen protectors to provide their phone screens with additional protection. A screen protector is particularly useful when a phone is dropped from a height and hits the floor with significant force.

But what should you do when the screen protector that has been on your phone for some time becomes damaged or covered with scratches? This can happen for various reasons such as accidentally placing the phone screen-down on a hard surface.

Scratches can also occur when the phone is kept in a pocket with keys or coins. Although screen protectors are highly resistant to scratches, they are not completely scratch-proof. Dust and dirt can also affect the phone’s screen and increase the risk of scratches.

So, if your screen protector becomes damaged, you can simply continue using the phone without replacing it immediately. Just try to keep the screen free from dust and make a habit of cleaning it regularly using a suitable screen-cleaning liquid and a soft cloth.

Keeping the kitchen clean storing food properly fixing leaks reducing moisture and sealing cracks can help.  If the problem continues professional pest control may be the most effective option.

    As the long summer vacation comes to an end, many parents wonder how to help their children get back into the school routine. After weeks of sleeping in playing and enjoying free time waking up early getting ready on time and returning to schoolwork can be difficult. Experts say that a few simple habits can make this change much easier. One of the most important steps is to fix your child’s sleep schedule. A few days before school starts encourage children to go to bed earlier and wake up at the same time they will on school days. Children aged 6 to 13 should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night while teenagers aged 13 to 17 need 8 to 10 hours. Good sleep helps improve both physical health and mental focus. Experts also recommend keeping children away from phones tablets computers and other electronic devices for at least one hour before bedtime. Instead parents can talk with them about their teachers classmates school activities and exciting things they can look forward to. Positive conversations can help reduce anxiety and build excitement. A healthy breakfast is another important part of a successful school day. Foods such as fruit milk eggs oatmeal whole grain bread and other balanced meals give children the energy they need and improve their focus memory and learning. Parents should also make time every day to ask their children about school.  Talking about lessons friends sports and classroom activities helps children feel supported and encourages them to share any concerns. Experts say parents should lead by example.  When the home follows a regular routine for sleeping eating and daily activities children are more likely to develop the same healthy habits. Most importantly school should be presented as a positive experience rather than something stressful. With encouragement patience and support children can adjust more easily and begin the new school year feeling happy and confident.

  • Hidden signs of liver disease

    Liver specialists in the United Arab Emirates are warning that liver disease can develop silently for many years.  Many people do not know they have a liver problem until the damage becomes severe. Doctors explain that the liver does not have pain sensing nerves so it usually does not hurt even when it is damaged.  It is also a very strong organ that can keep working normally even after 70% to 80% of it has been affected. Because of this fatty liver disease and other liver conditions may progress quietly for 10 to 30 years without clear symptoms. If they are not found early they can lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis) liver failure and in some cases the need for a liver transplant. Fatty liver cases are increasing Experts estimate that around 30% to 40% of adults in the UAE have fatty liver disease.  The condition is now called Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) because it is mainly linked to problems with the body’s metabolism. Without treatment MASLD can progress to liver inflammation scarring cirrhosis and even complete liver failure. Young adults are also at risk Doctors say liver disease is no longer a problem only for older adults. Rising rates of obesity type 2 diabetes excess weight and metabolic syndrome are increasing the number of cases among younger people as well. As obesity and diabetes continue to rise experts expect more people to develop serious liver disease in the future.   Why Symptoms Often go unnoticed The liver stays “silent” for two main reasons. First it does not have pain nerves. Second the healthy part of the liver continues to do its job even when a large portion is damaged. Early symptoms if they appear are often mild. These may include ongoing tiredness low energy weakness or slight discomfort in the upper abdomen.  Many people ignore these signs. Who is most at risk? People with type 2 diabetes obesity high cholesterol metabolic syndrome heavy alcohol use or a lack of physical activity have a higher risk of developing fatty liver disease. Research suggests that about 60% of people with type 2 diabetes also have fatty liver disease. However experts stress that even people with a healthy weight can develop the condition especially if they have a family history of liver disease an unhealthy diet or low levels of exercise. Gym goers should be careful too Doctors say they are seeing more people with fatty liver who do not drink alcohol are not overweight and consider themselves healthy. Experts warn that  eating too much sugar taking low quality supplements especially muscle building products getting too little sleep dealing with long-term stress, and sitting for many hours can all harm the liver. Unnecessary medicines and unregulated herbal supplements may also put extra pressure on the liver. Warning Signs that need medical attention Although liver disease may not cause symptoms at first you should see a doctor if you experience •Constant tiredness or weakness •Unexplained weight loss •Loss of appetite •Pain or swelling in the abdomen •Ongoing nausea •Seek urgent medical care if you notice. •Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) •Dark colored urine •Very pale stools •Swelling in the legs or abdomen •Easy bruising •Confusion or changes in mental alertness •Vomiting blood or blood in the stool Early detection can make a difference Experts say many liver diseases can be slowed down if they are diagnosed early.  In some cases part of the damage can even improve with proper treatment and healthy lifestyle changes. Losing excess weight controlling blood sugar and cholesterol eating a balanced diet exercising regularly and staying active are all important for keeping the liver healthy. Get regular liver checkups Doctors recommend that people at higher risk have liver function tests blood sugar and cholesterol checks and a liver ultrasound or FibroScan at least once a year. A FibroScan is a quick painless test that can detect fat buildup and scarring in the liver within minutes. Experts say the liver often gives no warning signs making regular screening one of the best ways to protect your liver health.

  • AI Cannot Replace Expertise

    By Arooba Younas The surge in the use of Artificial Intelligence by businesses, corporations, and organisations has been illustrated by the latest McKinsey Global Survey on the state of AI. Accordingly, 88 per cent of organisations reported the regular use of AI in at least one business function, a 10 per cent increase from the results of the survey conducted in the preceding year. Indicative of business leaders’ desire to boost productivity and reduce operational costs, companies adopted AI to achieve greater efficiency. The reverberations of AI integration are felt in the splintering of the organisational pyramid, driven by the expansion of what a single individual can accomplish. However, flattening hierarchies is not tantamount to flattening skill hierarchies or democratisation of expertise. Research has shown that Generative AI (GenAI) has the greatest impact on the level of expertise required to perform jobs, resulting in an accelerated learning curve for entry-level workers. Whilst shortening the learning curve and the time it takes novices to gain competence at new tasks, the limits of GenAI in upskilling workers have been revealed in an experiment conducted by researchers from Harvard Business School’s Data Design Institute and Stanford University, involving 78 employees from IG Group, a UK-based fintech company. Dividing the employees into three groups of occupational insiders (professional writers), adjacent outsiders (marketing specialists), and distant outsiders (technologists), the experiment attempted to gauge whether marketing specialists and technologists could match the performance of professional writers in conceptualising and drafting articles for IG Group’s website while receiving GenAI assistance. The results revealed that AI levelled the playing field at the conceptualisation stage. However, when the nature of the task shifted to executing the ideas by putting them in writing, a prominent expertise gap emerged. Both with and without GenAI’s help, the writers produced the best work, with marketers coming close and technologists lagging behind regardless of AI use. The divergence in performance, despite AI support, is a portrayal of the “GenAI Wall”, depicting the point at which GenAI does not sufficiently reduce the expertise gap between occupational insiders and outsiders. This is indicative of GenAI’s limit in how far it can carry workers outside their domain expertise. Without foundational knowledge, it becomes difficult for outsiders to distinguish between effective and flawed suggestions generated by GenAI. As a result, they may rely on its outputs without applying the necessary refinement, critical judgement and contextual understanding. Nonetheless, the experiment has implications for business organisations, particularly for leaders who overestimate the abilities of AI. It can only hasten the competency of individuals who are adjacent to a domain, and not conjure expertise out of thin air. In this regard, work structure, which is already undergoing change, can be rethought along the lines of expertise. A more fluid work environment can be created, where, in lieu of strict job roles, boundaries can blur by converging adjacent specialists. However, the experiment is not an advocacy for hiring fewer novices. Studies have shown a reduction in entry-level role postings, falling by 32 per cent in 2025 compared to 2019-2022. This suggests a myopic conclusion drawn from GenAI’s putative capabilities, for it is beginners who, when assimilated into the company’s culture and learn through practice, become experts. By thwarting the pipeline of learners by letting AI take over early-career work, which actually led to the making of experts, today’s efficiency may be sacrificed for impoverished talent tomorrow. The latter has been represented by the AI boomerang effect – recent AI-related layoffs, which are now being quietly reversed – as reports indicated employers regretting layoff decisions. This is because of AI hallucinations as well as its inadequacy to replace the required context or institutional knowledge, which human employees possessed. Although the IG Group experiment was conducted in a Western context, its implications can be generalised across the world, particularly as the allure of AI has diffused across continents. However, the embracing of AI in the Global South, whether in businesses or other sectors, has to be accompanied by digital literacy, localised governance, and a research ecosystem. This is significant lest the adoption of AI brings with it downsides in the form of overdependence and a putative magic bullet solution to solving complex issues ranging from bad governance to climate-related disasters. Additionally, GenAI’s exposure to the labour market has caused faster materialisation of disruptions rather than productivity gains due to a higher risk of job losses, as AI-driven automation can close clerical and administrative positions, which have historically served as pathways to decent work. Conclusively, GenAI has brought the promise of enabling individuals to bridge their capability gaps. However, AI cannot replace expertise or be an all-encompassing fix because it relies on pattern recognition rather than understanding real-world context.   • Human Capital Is Superior to Other Resources

    By Dr. Naveeda Katper Human beings live in a world of countless needs and wants, but the resources available to meet those needs are limited. Food, shelter, education, health and a sense of belonging are among the basic requirements of life. Because resources are scarce, individuals, organizations and governments have to set priorities, make choices and use available resources wisely. Resources can broadly be divided into natural and human-made resources. Natural resources such as land, water, forests, minerals and energy come from nature. Human-made resources, including machines, buildings, technology and infrastructure, are developed by people using natural resources. Natural resources can be depleted, while human-made resources can depreciate through use and time. Human beings, however, are different from other resources. A person is not simply a consumer of resources. With education, training, health and appropriate opportunities, a person can develop knowledge and skills and become an important form of human capital. This is why human capital is often considered more valuable than other resources. Human beings discover, develop and manage resources. They create technology, improve production, solve problems and generate new ideas. Among the traditional factors of production—land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship—human effort remains central because it activates and combines the others. Education and skills are therefore essential for economic and social development. A person without education or employable skills may have limited opportunities to earn a stable income. A skilled person, on the other hand, can use available resources productively and create value for both themselves and society. Skills can take different forms. Hard skills include technical and professional abilities. Soft skills include communication, teamwork, discipline and problem-solving. Transferable skills can be applied across different occupations and workplaces. All of these can improve a person’s ability to participate productively in the economy. Developed economies provide useful examples of how investment in people can contribute to national development. Countries such as Finland, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, Japan and South Korea have invested substantially in education, vocational training, technology and workforce development. Their experience shows that economic progress is not based only on natural resources or physical infrastructure. The knowledge, skills and productivity of people are equally important. Skills development should begin early in life. Children should not be taught only to memorise information. They should also be encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, make things, experiment and learn from mistakes. An education system that allows children to try, fail and try again can help develop confidence, creativity and practical thinking. Schools, vocational institutions and workplaces all have a role in this process. Young people need opportunities to connect education with practical skills. They should be able to understand how knowledge can be applied to real problems and employment opportunities. The challenge is particularly serious in developing and least-developed countries, where many people have limited access to quality education, technical training and decent employment. Weak educational systems, inadequate infrastructure and limited opportunities for formal employment can prevent large sections of the population from developing their full potential. The problem is not simply unemployment. It is also the gap between what people know and what the economy needs. Many young people complete some level of education but do not acquire the practical or technical skills required by employers. At the same time, businesses often struggle to find workers with the right skills. Pakistan faces a similar challenge. The country has a large and relatively young population, which can become an important economic advantage if the right investments are made. But population size alone does not create economic growth. A large population becomes an asset when people are healthy, educated, skilled and productively employed. The World Bank’s Human Capital Index has repeatedly highlighted the importance of investments in education, health and skills for Pakistan’s long-term economic prospects. Pakistan’s human-capital performance remains below that of many countries that have made stronger and more sustained investments in these areas. Improving the quality of education, expanding vocational training and increasing opportunities for productive employment should therefore be treated as national priorities. Formal education, however, should not be considered the only route to developing human capital. Many adults who did not receive adequate schooling can still acquire useful skills through vocational and technical training. Short courses in areas such as construction, agriculture, livestock, tailoring, information technology, electrical work, plumbing, mechanics, hospitality and other trades can provide people with opportunities to earn a livelihood. Such training should not remain concentrated in major cities. Local training centres and mobile skill programmes can take practical education to towns and villages. Community-level training can help women, young people and adults who cannot easily access conventional educational institutions. Pakistan can also benefit from stronger links between education and the labour market. Training programmes should be designed after identifying the skills actually demanded by local and national economies. Employers, educational institutions and government departments should work together to ensure that training leads to real opportunities rather than certificates alone. The private sector also has an important role. Businesses can provide apprenticeships, internships and on-the-job training. Young people can gain valuable experience when they are given opportunities to learn directly in workplaces. Human capital development should also include lifelong learning. Technology and the nature of work are changing rapidly. Skills that are valuable today may become less relevant tomorrow. Workers therefore need opportunities to update their knowledge and acquire new skills throughout their careers. The central lesson is simple: people should not be viewed merely as consumers of a country’s resources. With proper investment, they become producers, innovators, entrepreneurs, teachers, technicians, researchers and problem-solvers. They create value from resources that might otherwise remain underused. For Pakistan, this is both a challenge and an opportunity. The country’s young population can become a powerful economic resource if it receives quality education, healthcare, practical skills and meaningful employment opportunities. But if these needs are ignored, population growth can increase pressure on already limited resources. Human capital is therefore not a secondary concern.   • Artificial Intelligence vs Human Creativity

    By Muhammad Talha Karim A workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at the Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) made me ask myself that: “can a machine create, or does it only create what humans have already imagined?” Creativity has always been a phenomenal ability for human beings, which makes it unique from all other creatures. It helps us solve problems, create art, design new things, think differently, compose music, and write stories. The rapid development of AI has made machines so capable that they can generate music, create art, write essays, and even solve human-related problems. But a very serious question arises here: “Can AI truly be more creative than humans? AI has shown that it can perfectly help humans create new ideas. It simply analyzes the large amount of information, follow the pattern that is previously provided and by combining all the sources, generates content within few seconds. For example, can write an essay, assist you in providing you with the needed material, and make the stories for you. It can also make the process quicker by giving different alternatives. But, if we talk about human creativity, no AI-powered tool can match the detailing, background content and emotional support of a human creativity. AI-powered tools merely scan the information, combine it, rearrange the patterns and give you the required material. It does not use any kind of emotional power, background knowledge to do it. While on the very opposite side, human creativity holds this very significant and unique ability to use emotions, feeling and history with the art. Humans use attach emotions like love, loneliness, sadness, happiness, betrayal and attachment and many more and they are feeling with the art to create it perfectly. For example, if an artist creates a painting, it is not merely the amalgamation of colors, strokes and lines but it experiences the emotion that made the artist create the art. Human beings can physically and mentally feel that specific emotion and a sense of attachment with the art and artist. Creativity has always been deeply linked with emotions and feelings. Certainly, AI powered tools can create content more quickly, but it lacks a major factor “attachment”. It simply rephrases and rearrange the words that are already given and/or uploaded on it. but cannot explain it by using emotions. For instance, if a user commands any AI powered tool to write a story, it will be done in just few seconds, but it will lack the emotional attachment. On the other hand, a story written by a human being will be rich in emotions and feelings. Maybe the writer turned his own experience into the story. As the writer himself experienced that feeling, he can put that in words in such a way that it hits directly in the heart of the reader or any other person. They can feel more attachment to it. They can see themselves in that story, which connects people more strongly.   The second major factor is intention and purpose. Human beings have their purpose and intentions for doing a certain job. It can either be an emotion or a thought. Human beings can challenge the society, write to change the entire perspective of a group of people, and many other reasons while AI does not possess any of this. It writes only because it is being commanded. It does not experience childhood, young age, love, hate, separation, loneliness – nothing at all which makes it merely a content provider while Human beings are the content experiencers. They personally go through those feelings and phases, and they can better explain this!   Despite all these differences, both AI and Human creativity can go together. Humans can provide emotions, feelings, ideas and content while AI can provide speed, more information, new ideas and solutions to different problems. Instead of making AI and humans competitors they can become partners and offer better outcomes. For example, a graphic designer can ask AI to give him various initial concepts and then use his own concepts and creativity to make the best one.  AI may be able to imitate creativity, but human creativity comes from a life that no machine has ever lived. AI has changed the way humans think about creativity. No matter how Fastly AI can generate the content to create pictures, write stories and compose music, it still cannot connect it with emotions. But human beings connect emotions, feelings, thoughts, ideas more creatively. As a human being, it’s the need for us to keep getting the content, art, music and information which emotionally connects us with each other.
