Back to school tips every parent should know

As the long summer vacation comes to an end, many parents wonder how to help their children get back into the school routine.

After weeks of sleeping in playing and enjoying free time waking up early getting ready on time and returning to schoolwork can be difficult.

Experts say that a few simple habits can make this change much easier. One of the most important steps is to fix your child’s sleep schedule.

A few days before school starts encourage children to go to bed earlier and wake up at the same time they will on school days.

Children aged 6 to 13 should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night while teenagers aged 13 to 17 need 8 to 10 hours.

Good sleep helps improve both physical health and mental focus. Experts also recommend keeping children away from phones tablets computers and other electronic devices for at least one hour before bedtime.

Instead parents can talk with them about their teachers classmates school activities and exciting things they can look forward to.

Positive conversations can help reduce anxiety and build excitement. A healthy breakfast is another important part of a successful school day.

Foods such as fruit milk eggs oatmeal whole grain bread and other balanced meals give children the energy they need and improve their focus memory and learning.

Parents should also make time every day to ask their children about school.  Talking about lessons friends sports and classroom activities helps children feel supported and encourages them to share any concerns.

Experts say parents should lead by example.  When the home follows a regular routine for sleeping eating and daily activities children are more likely to develop the same healthy habits.

Most importantly school should be presented as a positive experience rather than something stressful.

With encouragement patience and support children can adjust more easily and begin the new school year feeling happy and confident.

    China introduces brain-controlled robot technology

    Several countries are actively developing Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology which enables people to interact with devices using only their thoughts without the need for physical movement. Now, a Chinese company is working to integrate this technology into robots. According to BrainCo, the company has developed the world’s first brain-to-robot interface system allowing robots to be controlled directly through human thought. The company said the system works using EEG headsets which are worn by human operators. These headsets monitor brain activity and translate it into commands that are sent to the robot. Like other BCI technologies, the system relies on extensive training data that maps specific patterns of brain activity to corresponding actions. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are then used to accurately interpret a person’s intended action and convert it into the correct robotic response. The technology called the Brain-Controlled Robot AI Platform was unveiled at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. BrainCo said the system can be used not only to control robots but also to operate robotic arms and other connected devices. The platform continuously collects data which is used to further improve its AI algorithms and enhance performance over time. According to the company, rapid advances in AI have enabled robots to perform many tasks independently. A study published last week claimed that the maximum possible human lifespan could reach 194 years. Scientists at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow say that if researchers can discover a way to limit cell death associated with aging, the human body may be able to function healthily for a longer period. Lifestyle factors cannot stop the natural biological aging process but they can help protect the body’s cells from premature death. The result may be not only a longer life but also a healthier and more active one. According to Dr. Claire Neyland, a general practitioner associated with the Preventive Healthcare Clinic (HOOQE), the real goal of longevity is not simply to add more years to life but to maintain a healthy and fulfilling life during old age. Dr. Neyland says planning for a long and healthy life should not begin at the age of 50 or 60. It is never too early to prepare for the future. By adopting healthy habits today, people can lay the foundation for a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life as they grow older. She said that eating a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep and exercising regularly are not the only things that matter. There are also some lesser-known but highly important daily habits that adults of all ages should incorporate into their routines. She explained that people generally spend most of their time sitting on chairs rather than on the floor. Sitting on the floor may help strengthen the lower body while also improving flexibility and balance. Moving from a sitting position on the floor to standing is a simple movement but it can quietly indicate whether the body is aging in a healthy way. On average, a person spends around 10 hours sitting each day which can have negative effects on the thigh bones, hip joints and pelvic-floor muscles. Sitting on the floor and getting back up requires leg strength, hip flexibility, balance and physical coordination. If these abilities are not regularly used, they can gradually weaken with age. People who maintain these abilities generally remain more independent and have a lower risk of falling. Falls are among the major causes of hospitalization and even death among older adults. According to Dr. Neyland, this habit can easily be incorporated into everyday life. For example, people can sit on the floor while watching television, play with children on the floor or do stretching exercises while sitting on the floor. If it is safe, they can also practise standing up without using their hands for support. Even performing this exercise a few times a day may help maintain mobility, flexibility and agility as the body ages.

  • High sugar intake in early life may raise dementia risk

    A new study has found that children who consume high amounts of sugar at an early age may face a higher risk of developing dementia later in life. The study suggests that pregnant women who avoid sweets, chocolates and other sugary foods may help reduce their child’s risk of developing the disease by up to 20 percent. The research published in the medical journal Neurology also found that consuming very small amounts of sugar during early life may provide protection against dementia. The study’s lead author, Professor Jiazheng Zheng said the findings suggest that limiting sugar intake during the early stages of life could have long-term benefits for brain health. He further said the findings highlight the potential importance of early-life nutrition in reducing the risk of dementia decades later. Researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology compared the health of 64,737 people who were born before and after sugar rationing was introduced in Britain during World War II. The participants were divided into groups based on the timing of sugar rationing: those who experienced limited access to sugar before birth and during their first year of life, those who experienced it before birth and until the age of two and those who were not exposed to sugar rationing. When the participants reached an average age of 55, the research team began analyzing their medical records to determine which individuals were diagnosed with dementia during the following 15 years. Among the 15,256 people who had limited access to sugar before birth and during their first two years of life, only 2 percent were later diagnosed with dementia. Although researchers say the findings do not conclusively prove that eating less sugar directly prevents dementia, experts believe the results are consistent with growing evidence that sugar can affect brain function. Experts also say that the brain is highly sensitive to fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Other research has found that people with high blood sugar levels may face up to a 69 percent higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Childhood divorce linked to stroke risk

    A new study suggests that people whose parents divorced during their childhood may have a higher risk of having a stroke later in life. The research, published in the journal PLOS One looked at data from more than 13,000 adults aged 65 and older. Researchers found that people whose parents divorced before they turned 18 were about 60% more likely to have experienced a stroke than those who grew up in families where their parents stayed together. Lead researcher Dr. Mary Kate Schilke, a psychology lecturer at Tyndale University in Toronto said the increased risk remained even after taking other factors into account including smoking low physical activity lower income and education levels. She said childhood parental divorce was still linked to a 61% higher risk of stroke in later life. A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.  It can cause brain damage long term disability or even death if not treated quickly. The researchers stressed that this was an observational study meaning it does not prove that parental divorce directly causes strokes. However childhood family stress may be connected to other health conditions that increase stroke risk such as depression diabetes smoking and obesity. Doctors say recognizing the warning signs of a stroke can save lives because early treatment is very important. Common stroke symptoms include. Sudden weakness or numbness in the face arm or leg especially on one side of the body. •Trouble speaking or understanding speech. •Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes. •Difficulty walking dizziness loss of balance or poor coordination. Experts say anyone with these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately as fast treatment can greatly improve recovery.

Digital depression is a condition in which prolonged use of digital devices and online platforms contributes to feelings of sadness, anxiety, loneliness, emotional exhaustion, and low self-esteem. It is becoming increasingly common, particularly among teenagers and young adults, who spend a significant portion of their day online. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression affects approximately 280 million people worldwide, making it one of the leading causes of disability. Although digital technology is not the sole cause of depression, research shows that excessive screen time and unhealthy social media habits can significantly increase the risk of mental health problems. A 2023 advisory by the U.S. Surgeon General reported that adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media are at a greater risk of developing anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Similarly, DataReportal’s 2024 Global Digital Report found that the average internet user spends approximately 6 hours and 38 minutes online each day, highlighting how deeply digital technology has become integrated into modern life. Several factors contribute to digital depression, including excessive use of social media, constantly comparing one’s life with idealized online images, cyberbullying, online harassment, poor sleep caused by late-night screen use, smartphone and internet addiction, and reduced face-to-face interaction with family and friends. The effects of digital depression can be both psychological and physical. People may experience persistent sadness, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, headaches, eye strain, fatigue, and reduced productivity. If left unaddressed, these problems can negatively affect academic performance, professional life, and personal relationships. Fortunately, digital depression can be prevented by adopting healthy digital habits. People should limit their daily screen time, avoid using electronic devices before bedtime, take regular breaks from social media, engage in physical exercise, spend more quality time with family and friends, and seek professional help if symptoms persist. Schools and parents should also educate young people about responsible technology use and the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline life.
