Back to school tips every parent should know

As the long summer vacation comes to an end, many parents wonder how to help their children get back into the school routine.

After weeks of sleeping in playing and enjoying free time waking up early getting ready on time and returning to schoolwork can be difficult.

Experts say that a few simple habits can make this change much easier. One of the most important steps is to fix your child’s sleep schedule.

A few days before school starts encourage children to go to bed earlier and wake up at the same time they will on school days.

Children aged 6 to 13 should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night while teenagers aged 13 to 17 need 8 to 10 hours.

Good sleep helps improve both physical health and mental focus. Experts also recommend keeping children away from phones tablets computers and other electronic devices for at least one hour before bedtime.

Instead parents can talk with them about their teachers classmates school activities and exciting things they can look forward to.

Positive conversations can help reduce anxiety and build excitement. A healthy breakfast is another important part of a successful school day.

Foods such as fruit milk eggs oatmeal whole grain bread and other balanced meals give children the energy they need and improve their focus memory and learning.

Parents should also make time every day to ask their children about school.  Talking about lessons friends sports and classroom activities helps children feel supported and encourages them to share any concerns.

Experts say parents should lead by example.  When the home follows a regular routine for sleeping eating and daily activities children are more likely to develop the same healthy habits.

Most importantly school should be presented as a positive experience rather than something stressful.

With encouragement patience and support children can adjust more easily and begin the new school year feeling happy and confident.

  • 40,000-Year-Old ivory birds discovered in a German cave

    Archaeologists have recently uncovered two thumbnail-sized sculptures of birds carved from mammoth ivory approximately 40,000 years ago. These delicate figurines, which have spent dozens of millennia buried in sediment, offer an intimate glimpse into the minds, environments, and creative capacities of our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age. The astonishing discoveries were made in the Hohle Fels Cave, a site deeply embedded in the Swabian Jura region of Germany. This location has long been celebrated as one of the most critical archaeological sites in the world for understanding early modern human culture in Europe. The newly found sculptures are extraordinarily small. Each measures less than a single inch in length and weighs merely a fraction of an ounce. It makes them roughly the size of an average human thumbnail. Despite their diminutive scale, the level of detail the prehistoric artist managed to achieve is nothing short of masterful. Rather than relying on abstract or highly stylized representations, the Ice Age carver recorded specific, anatomical observations. The figurines feature carefully incised markings that clearly delineate feathers, as well as distinctively carved eyes. One of the miniature sculptures portrays a bird with its wings fully spread, capturing a moment of dynamic movement, although a few fragments of its body have unfortunately been lost to time. Remarkably, this particular piece now holds the record as the smallest Ice Age artwork ever found in the region. The second figurine, which survived completely intact, depicts a bird in a resting posture. It appears to be lying down, a pose that researchers speculate might represent the animal tending to its eggs. Experts analyzing the avian features believe that at least one of the sculptures represents a ptarmigan, a robust bird belonging to the grouse family that would have been familiar to inhabitants of the harsh Ice Age landscape. While the identity of the second bird remains slightly less certain, it too could be a ptarmigan, or possibly a small bird of prey. Because the two ivory pieces were found just about five feet apart during the 2025 excavation season and share stylistic similarities, archaeologists strongly suspect they were crafted around the exact same time, quite possibly by the very same artist. The excavation was led by Nicholas Conard and a dedicated team from the University of Tübingen, who have been meticulously studying the Hohle Fels site for nearly three decades. The process of unearthing such fragile artifacts requires incredible patience. Researchers painstakingly remove layers of earth before washing and sifting the prehistoric sediment through extremely fine mesh screens. It was during this rigorous process that Elisa Luzi, a paleontologist at the university, first spotted one of the tiny birds. She described the profound emotional weight of the moment, emphasizing the sheer privilege of being the first human being to lay eyes on the carving in 40,000 years, and feeling an instant connection to the humanity of its maker. The Hohle Fels Cave These findings belong to the Aurignacian period, an epoch that coincides with the early settlement of Homo sapiens in Europe. The Hohle Fels Cave which is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site has previously yielded some of the oldest known figurative art and musical instruments on the planet. The collection includes early bone flutes and the famous Venus of Hohle Fels. Exactly why these early humans took the time to carve such intricate, tiny birds remains a mystery. Researchers have proposed various theories, wondering if they were utilized as personal talismans meant to bring good fortune, or as cultural symbols associated with the specific identity of their owner. While we may never have a definitive answer regarding their prehistoric purpose, these thumbnail-sized masterpieces firmly remind us that the human desire to observe, create, and capture beauty is as ancient as humanity itself.  

  • Rabies still kills thousands in Pakistan

    Every year millions of people in Pakistan are bitten by dogs, and thousands are believed to die from  rabies a deadly viral disease that can almost always be prevented with timely treatment. Health experts say Pakistan still does not have a strong nationwide system to track rabies cases. Because of this around 5,000 people are estimated to lose their lives each year after being bitten by rabid dogs. Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the brain and nervous system.  Once symptoms appear the disease is almost always fatal with a survival rate of less than 1%. The first signs of rabies usually develop about six weeks after a bite from an infected animal. Common symptoms include fever headache body aches a sore throat and difficulty swallowing.  As the disease progresses it becomes much more dangerous. Children living in rural areas and on the outskirts of cities are among the most affected groups. A study published in the international journal Acta Tropica found that the high number of rabies cases in Pakistan is linked to low public awareness delays in seeking medical care and weak disease prevention efforts. Health experts say that immediate medical treatment after a dog bite including wound cleaning and timely vaccination can prevent rabies. They also welcomed the federal government’s recent in principle approval of the National Rabies Prevention and Control Framework calling it an important step toward improving rabies prevention and saving lives.

  • The revival of Kathak in the heart of Lahore

    In the quiet underbelly of Lahore’s Alhamra Arts Council, an ancient pulse woke from its slumber. It began with the whisper of clinking of ghungroos. Hundreds of brass ankle bells are braided onto raw cotton strings and then they wait to catch the cadence of a human heartbeat. For decades, the classical movement of Pakistan seemed confined to memories and clandestine. That’s how a heritage has been subjected to silence under the shadow of political conservatism. Yet inside the halls of the Lahore Kathak Festival, the art form proclaimed its victorious home-coming. Kathak derives its name from katha: the Sanskrit word for story. The story starts even before borders were drawn across rivers and plains. Itinerant storytellers wandered the northern expanses of the undivided subcontinent. They combined Hindu mythology, Sufi mysticism and local folklore into rhythmic physical poetry. When these storytellers stepped into the imperial courts of the Mughals, the art form transformed. It absorbed Persian elegance, geometric precision and the subtle emotional nuances of Urdu ghazals. Kathak became a living art created from the shared civilizational fabric of the region. It became an artistic synthesis that belongs as fundamentally to the Indus valley as it does to the banks of the Ganges. To embrace Kathak in modern Pakistan is to reclaim forgotten cultural roots. Post-partition artistic discourse attempted to segregate Pakistan’s creative identity from its ancient subcontinental ancestry. It resulted in treating classical dance with suspicion or elitist detachment. Pioneer icons like Sheema Kermani, Nighat Chaudhry and Bina Jawwad stood as solitary legacies during decades when dancing was criminalized. Their bodies became active spaces of memory when state patronage vanished. Kathak – A Breathing Idiom Now, a dynamic new wave of young performers is stepping into the limelight with devotion and fresh perspective. Organizers like Maan Sayeed and Momina Farooq Khan recently brought together maestros and young aspirants. They proved that classical dance is not a monument preserved, but a breathing idiom. On stage, young artists offered performances that blurred the line between heritage and modernity. Soloist Aliza Khalid, clad in radiant white, set her precise footwork to the haunting melodies of Seraiki folk music. Elsewhere, ensemble dancers whirled in breathtaking pirouettes (chakkars), their skirts flaring like blooming lotus petals in sync with the sudden claps of the tabla.   What makes this emerging movement so profound is its insistence on inclusivity and identity. The overflowing auditoriums where audiences stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisles signaled a hungry public desire to reconnect with an art form that speaks directly to the soul. It feels like through every intricate hand gesture (hasta) and rhythmic cycle (taal), these young dancers demonstrate that Kathak is an act of reclamation. It honors the land’s heritage, reminding us that art transcends temporal political boundaries to express the eternal human story.

    The rise of Alfred, Lord Tennyson

    On August 6, 1809, one of the defining literary voices of the 19th century was born: Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Tennyson came to embody the doubts, solemnity, and romantic ideals of the Victorian era. He served as Britain’s Poet Laureate for more than four decades during the height of Queen Victoria’s reign. Early Brilliance and Sharp Criticism Tennyson’s journey to becoming a beloved national figure was anything but smooth. Raised in a large, tumultuous household by a clergyman father, young Alfred sought escape through verse. His talents surfaced early; while studying at Cambridge, he won the prestigious Chancellor’s Gold Medal in 1829 for his poem Timbuktu. Shortly thereafter, he published early collections containing works such as Mariana and Claribel. These early publications showcased his extraordinary musicality and eye for detail, yet contemporary critics were not entirely impressed. Severe reviews dismissed his work as overly melancholic, affected, and sentimental. The hostility of these early critiques shook Tennyson deeply, prompting a decade-long period of publishing silence. A phase scholars often refer to as his ten years’ silence. Crafting the Masterpieces Rather than abandoning his craft, Tennyson spent those quiet years refining his technique, studying philosophy, and confronting personal tragedy. The sudden death of his closest friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, plunged Tennyson into profound grief. This loss became the catalyst for his most famous masterpiece, In Memoriam A.H.H. Published in 1850, the massive elegy explored faith, mortality, and scientific progress, striking a deep chord with a Victorian public navigating rapid industrialization and societal change. The immense success of In Memoriam transformed his standing almost overnight. That same year, following the death of William Wordsworth, Queen Victoria appointed Tennyson as Poet Laureate. He went on to compose iconic works that defined the national consciousness, including The Charge of the Light Brigade, Ulysses, and his epic Arthurian cycle, Idylls of the King. A Lasting Literary Legacy While early critics painted him as a sentimentalist, history remembers Tennyson as a master craftsman of English rhythm and sound. Lines like; “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” (Ulysses) have woven themselves permanently into the modern lexicon. His ability to blend intimate personal emotion with grand societal themes elevated him from a criticized young poet to an enduring pillar of world literature. Key Milestones in Tennyson’s Career 1809: Born in Somersby, Lincolnshire on August 6. 1829: Wins the Chancellor’s Gold Medal at Cambridge for Timbuktu. 1830: Publishes Poems, Chiefly Lyrical, introducing works like Mariana and Claribel. 1850: Publishes In Memoriam A.H.H. and is appointed Poet Laureate by Queen Victoria. 1854: Pens The Charge of the Light Brigade, capturing national sentiment during the Crimean War. 1892: Passes away at age 83, buried in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey.

  • Woman dies after anti aging injection in New York

    A 27 year old woman in New York has died after receiving an anti aging injection at a private medical clinic raising serious concerns about unlicensed cosmetic treatments. According to foreign media reports the woman became critically ill shortly after the injection. An ambulance was called to take her to the hospital but she died before arriving. Police arrested 55 year old Luis Rojas Cabrera the man who gave the injection.  During questioning he admitted that he did not have a valid New York medical license to practice medicine. Authorities have charged him with practicing medicine without a license and putting another person’s life at risk through reckless actions. The suspect later appeared in a Bronx court. A judge allowed his temporary release but ordered him to surrender his passport until the post mortem report is completed. In court Cabrera said he is a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic and also holds a medical assistant license in Puerto Rico.  He added that his application for a New York medical license is still under review. He also confirmed that the only license he currently holds in New York is as a cosmetologist not as a licensed physician.

  • The hallucination trap – information convincing but factually incorrect

    By Syeda Samar Zahra Zaidi When you ask an AI chatbot a question it does not know the answer to, an odd thing can happen: instead of hesitating or saying, “I am not sure!” it confidently delivers a tidy, well-structured, completely fabricated response—often with fake citations, fictional figures, and an authoritative tone. This phenomenon is known as the ‘hallucination trap ’, and it may be the most significant barrier between trust and artificial intelligence. I was introduced to the term “AI hallucination” for the first time in the workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). I learned that a “hallucination” occurs when a language model produces information that sounds convincing but is factually incorrect or completely made up. Examples include inventing a legal case that never existed, citing a research paper that doesn’t exist or boldly misrepresenting a historical date. What is disturbing is not merely that AI can be wrong-humans make mistake too- but rather the way it presents that incorrect information with clearly, confidence and without a trace of doubt. Large language models are essentially highly complex pattern predictors trained to produce the most likely next word in a sequence. As a result, when a model has encountered a topic thousands of times in its training data, the predictors are typically accurate. However, when it comes across a gap, an unidentified fact or a question at the outer edge of its knowledge, it doesn’t shift into a hesitant mode. Instead, it continues doing exactly what it was trained to do: generate a logical, fluent piece of writing, producing a response that is structurally sound and grammatically correct but based on nothing. In human communication, confidence is generally perceived as a sign of strength which is important. We naturally prefer to trust a calm, reliable voice over a hesitant one. AI systems unintentionally exploit the tendency because their language remains confident whether they are right or wrong. The risks increase with the use of AI, as students may unintentionally include false information into their work and journalists have published articles citing artificially created sources and quotes, negatively affecting the credibility of their publications. Such inaccuracies influence what millions of people see, believe or share, thereby amplifying fabricated content. The reason AI does not simply say “I don’t know” is partly due to the way these systems are trained. Many models are designed to provide helpful, comprehensive-sounding answers and are rarely rewarded for expressing doubt during training. This means that a model that frequently acknowledges uncertainty may be judged as less helpful than one that consistently provides an answer, even when that confidence is occasionally misplaced. Such incorrectly aligned incentives arise when the training process gradually teaches the model that sounding confident is more valuable than being accuracy. Retrieval-augmented generation, which relies on responses in actual, verifiable records rather than internal memory alone, improved training techniques that explicitly account for uncertainty; and systems built to simply cite sources. So, users can independently verify claims are just a few of the ways developers are using to addresses this problem. While none of these solutions fully eliminate hallucination yet, taken together they represent a major shift from blind confidence toward earned trust. The most dangerous outcome is not an AI that makes mistakes but a culture of users who stop questioning because the system always sounds so sure of itself.   Therefore, until AI becomes more reliably aware of it own limitation, part of the responsibility falls on the people who use it: treating AI-generated output as a starting point rather than an endpoint, cross checking important facts against credible sources. In the end, the hallucination trap serves as a reminder that illusion is not the same as truth. As AI becomes increasingly common in education, digital media and everyday life, understanding why it occasionally lies with confidence is not only a technical curiosity but also a fundamental aspect of digital literacy. We must strengthen our ability to verify the information provided by AI as they become more persuasive.
