Digital depression and human interactions

By Asma Qayyum

Digital depression refers to the negative impact of excessive screen time, information overload, and unhealthy social media use on mental health. In today’s digital age, smartphones, social media platforms, and the internet have become an essential part of everyday life. While these technologies help people communicate, learn, and work more efficiently, their excessive use can have serious consequences for mental well-being.

Digital depression is a condition in which prolonged use of digital devices and online platforms contributes to feelings of sadness, anxiety, loneliness, emotional exhaustion, and low self-esteem. It is becoming increasingly common, particularly among teenagers and young adults, who spend a significant portion of their day online.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression affects approximately 280 million people worldwide, making it one of the leading causes of disability. Although digital technology is not the sole cause of depression, research shows that excessive screen time and unhealthy social media habits can significantly increase the risk of mental health problems.

A 2023 advisory by the U.S. Surgeon General reported that adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media are at a greater risk of developing anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Similarly, DataReportal’s 2024 Global Digital Report found that the average internet user spends approximately 6 hours and 38 minutes online each day, highlighting how deeply digital technology has become integrated into modern life.

Several factors contribute to digital depression, including excessive use of social media, constantly comparing one’s life with idealized online images, cyberbullying, online harassment, poor sleep caused by late-night screen use, smartphone and internet addiction, and reduced face-to-face interaction with family and friends.

The effects of digital depression can be both psychological and physical. People may experience persistent sadness, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, headaches, eye strain, fatigue, and reduced productivity. If left unaddressed, these problems can negatively affect academic performance, professional life, and personal relationships.

Fortunately, digital depression can be prevented by adopting healthy digital habits. People should limit their daily screen time, avoid using electronic devices before bedtime, take regular breaks from social media, engage in physical exercise, spend more quality time with family and friends, and seek professional help if symptoms persist. Schools and parents should also educate young people about responsible technology use and the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline life.

In conclusion, digital technology has transformed modern life by creating countless opportunities for education, communication, business, and innovation. However, when used excessively or without balance, it can seriously affect mental health. By promoting digital awareness, developing healthier online habits, and supporting those experiencing emotional difficulties, society can reduce the impact of digital depression and encourage a healthier relationship with technology.

  • 3 Houseplants that may attract lizards

Lizards often appear in homes during the summer especially in kitchens bathrooms and near indoor plants. While they are usually harmless many people find them unpleasant. They can also become a hygiene concern if they come into contact with food. Experts say some houseplants may attract lizards because they provide cool damp and shaded places where the reptiles like to hide. One of the most common plants is the money plant. Its large leaves and moist soil create a cool environment making it a favorite hiding place for lizards. If the vine grows up a wall or support lizards may climb and rest among the leaves. Another plant that may attract lizards is jasmine. The plant offers a cool leafy space and some experts believe its dense growth makes it a comfortable shelter for lizards. Marigold plants may also attract them. Their thick leaves create shade giving lizards a safe place to hide during hot weather. The good news is that you do not need to remove these plants. There are a few simple home remedies that may help keep lizards away. Placing camphor tablets near plant pots is one popular method because lizards dislike their strong smell. You can also place half an onion or a few garlic cloves near the pots as their odor may help repel lizards. Another natural option is bay leaves whose strong scent is believed to discourage lizards from staying near plants. Experts also recommend keeping the area around plants clean. Dry leaves weeds and garden waste can attract insects which are the main food source for lizards. By reducing insects and maintaining good hygiene around your plants and home you can also reduce the chances of lizards appearing.

  • Weight loss drugs may raise hair loss risk

A new study suggests that some widely used weight loss medicines may increase the risk of hair loss (alopecia). These medicines are mainly prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. They work by copying natural hormones in the body that help control blood sugar levels and reduce appetite making it easier for some people to lose weight. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Health System compared people taking GLP-1 medications with those using other diabetes treatments. They found that people using GLP-1 drugs appeared to have a higher rate of hair loss. The study also noted that U.S. health regulators have received many reports of hair loss after the use of semaglutide and tirzepatide. According to the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) there were 399 reports of hair loss linked to tirzepatide in 2026, compared with 541 reports the previous year. For semaglutide, 148 reports were received in 2026 while 164 reports were recorded the year before. Experts say the findings show a possible link between these medicines and hair loss. However they stress that more medical research is needed to confirm whether the drugs are directly responsible.

Does placing Wi-Fi router on floor weaken signals?

You may have heard that the location of a Wi-Fi router plays an important role in its performance. Placing a router in a poor location can negatively affect the strength and range of internet signals. But what happens if you place a Wi-Fi router on the floor? The answer is that a Wi-Fi router can be placed on the floor but generally, it is not an ideal location. One reason is that when a router is placed on the floor, a significant portion of its Wi-Fi signals may be directed toward the ground. In addition, placing the router on the floor increases the chances of its signals being blocked or weakened by furniture and other household objects. As you may know, most Wi-Fi routers have antennas that transmit signals at different angles. Therefore, when a Wi-Fi router is placed on the floor, many of its signals may travel directly toward the floor instead of spreading efficiently throughout the room. Walls along the path of Wi-Fi signals can also act as obstacles. That is why it is generally recommended to place your Wi-Fi router in an elevated location such as on a shelf. The higher the router is placed, the better the signal coverage is likely to be throughout the house. It is also better to place the router in an open area where there are fewer household objects around it. Although placing a Wi-Fi router on the floor is not ideal, it is not necessarily the worst possible location. In fact, placing a router close to electrical appliances can be even worse. Therefore, you should avoid placing your Wi-Fi router near devices such as televisions, microwave ovens, refrigerators, Bluetooth devices and other electronic appliances as they can significantly interfere with signal coverage.

    Longing for other lives

You might be driving along a quiet stretch of highway at dusk and notice a remote house set against the rolling hills. Its porch light glowing softly against the fading twilight. It happens in an instant. Your mind steps inside for a fleeting moment. You picture yourself standing in that kitchen, tending to a warm pot of soup, learning the rhythms of the local wildlife and forget the press of unread emails. Or perhaps it happens when you see a cozy cottage on a distant coast. Might be an apartment perched above a neighborhood bookstore. Or a tiny rural train station where only a few passengers wait. For a few seconds, you inhabit that alternate life. But as quickly as the thought arrives, reality hits back. For many people, these sudden bursts of romantic daydreaming trigger a wave of subtle unease. It is common to treat such longings like a mild psychological symptom. It is an indicator that something in our current existence is lacking. We wonder if we made wrong turns along the path, selected the wrong career or settled into the wrong neighborhood. We assume that fantasizing about a simpler life means we are secretly desperate to escape our reality. However, a change in perspective shows that this assumption may misinterpret how the human mind functions. Understanding Fernweh: The Opposite of Homesickness The key to re-evaluating this feeling lies in a concept from the German language: fernweh. The word is translated literally as far-pain. Fernweh describes a deep, aching yearning for distant places. It stands as the emotional mirror image of homesickness. While homesickness pulls us back toward the familiar, fernweh pushes toward the unfamiliar. Fernweh is neither a practical plan for relocation nor a symptom of dissatisfaction. It exists in a unique middle ground. It is more than a mere desire to escape reality, yet far less than a literal plan to manifest a new lifestyle. When we treat longing as a sign of discontent, we force ourselves into an unnecessary dilemma. We start assuming we must either change our lives or suppress our thoughts entirely. In reality, these brief mental excursions rarely end with us packing a suitcase. Instead, they leave us returning to our daily routine feeling subtly expanded, as if our capacity for wonder has been stretched open. The Multiple Selves and the Purpose of Imagination The alternative selves we envision during daydreams: the quiet caretaker of a lighthouse, the keeper of a village shop, or the isolated writer in a secluded cabin, are not criticism on our present choices. They do not demand that we abandon our jobs or start over from scratch. Rather, these imagined lives serve as quiet reminders that human beings are inherently complex. The person managing household budgets, answering routine emails and searching for misplaced keys is not the entirety of who we are or who we could be. Human imagination evolved specifically to explore endless possibilities without requiring us to physically execute every scenario. Seeing Distant Peace as Invitation Instead of seeing distant places as destinations we failed to reach, we can view them as invitations. They invite us to reconnect with our curiosity, our creativity and our capacity for reinvention. They reassure us that another way of seeing the world remains entirely possible, even within the routine of daily living.   Ultimately, longing for another life or a distant land does not mean you chose the wrong life. It simply demonstrates that your imagination remains curious and alive. As long as a distant porch light or a road over a hill can capture your wonder, you can take comfort in a profound truth. The truth is your internal life will always be far larger than the single outer life you happen to inhabit.
