Reason, passion and desire

We often like to view ourselves as unified, consistent individuals guided by singular motives. Yet, almost everyone has experienced an intense internal conflict. It’s wanting to spend on a impulse buy while knowing it defies financial logic. Or feeling overcome with regret immediately after giving in to a temptation. Over two millennia ago, the ancient Greek philosopher Plato set out to explain this psychological friction in Book IV of his masterwork, the Republic. Plato proposed that our psyche is composed of three distinct yet interacting forces rather than treating the human mind or psuche (soul) as a monolithic entity.

Plato developed the concept of the tripartite soul. Further, he offered a framework that remains remarkably relevant to modern understandings of human behavior, self-control and moral choice.

The Three Components of the Psyche

Plato divides the human mind into three primary elements, each responsible for different aspects of our drives and behavior.

1. The Appetitive Element (To Epithumetikon)

The appetitive part is the largest and most primal component of human nature. It encompasses our basic instinctual desires, including physical appetites for food, drink, comfort, and sensual pleasure, as well as material wants. Because these cravings are immediate and self-interested, the appetitive drive is inherently impulsive. Left unchecked, it seeks gratification regardless of long-term consequences.

2. The Spirited Element (To Thumoeides)

The spirited element represents our emotional drive, passion, and sense of honor. It is the source of courage, pride, and righteous indignation when we witness or experience injustice. Unlike raw bodily appetite, the spirited part is closely tied to our moral identity and self-image. When functioning healthily, spirit acts as an ally to reason. It generates feelings of shame or self-directed anger when we surrender to harmful appetitive urges.

3. The Rational Element (To Logistikon)

The rational element is the calculating and reflective mind. It seeks truth through logic, forethought, and critical reflection. What sets rationality apart from the other two components is its scope. While appetite and spirit focus on fulfilling specific, immediate goals, the rational mind evaluates what is best for the entire person in the long run.

The Conflict Within: Why the Soul Divides

To demonstrate that these three elements are truly distinct, Plato relies on an early formulation of the principle of non-contradiction: a single entity cannot simultaneously move in opposite directions in the exact same respect. Therefore, when a person experiences contradictory impulses such as feeling an intense thirst yet consciously choosing not to drink due to illness or health concerns, different parts of the mind must be in opposition.

A classic illustration of this psychological war is the story of Leontius. While walking, Leontius felt a compulsive curiosity to look at execution corpses lying on the ground. Simultaneously, he felt disgust and moral repulsion. Eventually, his base appetite won out, causing him to rush over while angrily cursing his own eyes. This reaction demonstrates the spirited part of the soul becoming angry at the appetitive part for overriding rational judgment.

From Conflict to Harmony

Plato’s goal was not to suggest that humans should eradicate desire or emotion altogether. Instead, he argued that mental health and moral integrity, what he called justice of the soul, require a proper hierarchy.

Reason must govern, serving as the wise leader that understands the big picture.

Spirit must protect and enforce reason’s guidance with courage and conviction.

Appetite must operate within temperate limits established by reason.

 

When these three components function in balance, an individual achieves psychological harmony. Conversely, when base desires or untamed emotions usurp the throne, inner turmoil and destructive behaviors follow. Plato’s tripartite framework ultimately serves as a timeless reminder that self-mastery is not about suppressing who we are, but about bringing our competing drives into a balanced, reason-guided unity.

    In the United States, the growing shift from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes and other nicotine products could potentially lead to a decline in cancer rates in the future. A new study published in JNCI Cancer Spectrum analyzed data from US federal health surveys collected between 2015 and 2023. According to the study, traditional cigarette smoking declined significantly across almost all age groups during this period with the decline being particularly noticeable among people aged 18 to 34. In contrast, the number of people using only alternative nicotine products particularly e-cigarettes, increased. The study’s lead researcher, Professor Kenneth Michael Cummings of the Medical University of South Carolina said the trend suggests that many smokers are completely switching to vaping rather than using both products simultaneously. The study found that the proportion of people who used both cigarettes and e-cigarettes remained around 2% to 3% throughout the study period. Scientists also developed a Population Harm Reduction Index to compare traditional cigarette smoking with the use of non-combustible nicotine products. According to the researchers, an increase in the index indicates that more people are using alternatives to traditional cigarettes that may expose them to lower levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals. The study found that people aged 55 and above were much less likely than younger people to quit smoking and switch to alternative products even though older adults could gain significant immediate health benefits from quitting smoking. According to the study, vaping has now become more common than cigarette smoking among young people aged 18 to 24. Professor Cummings said the greatest concern is that older people who have smoked for many years are not switching to lower-risk, non-combustible nicotine products as quickly. This is the group that could potentially gain the greatest immediate health benefits from quitting smoking. According to the report, the study was funded by the US National Cancer Institute and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) while the vaping industry provided no financial support.

    Marc Padeu is reimagining renaissance masterpieces

    In the global art world, classical European masterpieces have long held a dominant position in defining sacred aesthetics, grand narratives, and historical gravity. However, Cameroonian visual artist Marc Padeu is challenging this historical monopoly by taking the iconic compositions of Old Masters such as Caravaggio, Diego Velázquez, and Titian. He’s transplanting them directly into the lush, everyday landscapes of rural Central Africa. Padeu’s striking large-scale canvases reimagine classic biblical motifs and European artistic traditions against the backdrop of cocoa plantations and rural villages in Cameroon. Far from being a mere imitation of Western techniques, Padeu’s work represents a deliberate re-centering of world history, spiritual heritage, and local identity. A Dual Spiritual and Cultural Inheritance Born and raised in Cameroon, Padeu grew up navigating two distinct spiritual and cultural realities. The formal structure of Catholic devotion and the indigenous customs of Bamiléké animism. This dual background permeates his paintings, where sacred rituals and everyday agricultural labor exist side by side. In Padeu’s compositions, classical Christian iconography such as the baptism of Christ, the martyrdom of saints or solemn biblical gatherings is integrated into scenes of fieldworkers harvesting cocoa pods along riverbanks. Rather than treating these scenes as contradictory, Padeu views them as a natural reflection of human experience. He points out that the original stories of the Bible were ultimately rooted in the lives of ordinary people engaging in daily, unvarnished labor. Extending the Legacy of the Old Masters When Padeu incorporates the compositions, dramatic lighting, and gestures of European Renaissance masters, his objective is not passive homage or simple satire. Instead, he describes his creative philosophy as an extension of the art historical narrative. By placing Black African figures at the center of classical visual compositions, Padeu reframes European iconographic conventions as a shared human language. His paintings suggest that spiritual gravity, dignity and monumental art belong just as naturally to a Cameroonian cocoa harvest as they do to a 16th-century Italian cathedral. The Art of Patience and Global Recognition Padeu’s meticulous process reflects a deliberate rejection of fast-paced contemporary art production: Deliberate Pace: He completes rarely more than ten paintings per year. Long Incubation: Months are spent conceptualizing each piece before a brush ever touches the canvas. Global Reach: His recent solo exhibition in London highlights his growing prominence on the international stage.   Padeu’s ultimate creative ambition is both subtle and transformative. Rather than shaping his art to explain Africa to Western audiences, his goal is to present the wider world through an African lens. His work offers a perspective rooted firmly in the soils, traditions, and realities of Cameroon.

  • AI Godfather Geoffrey Hinton warns AI may escape human control

    Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton is widely regarded as the “Godfather of AI.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work on artificial intelligence technology. Geoffrey Hinton who is associated with the University of Toronto in Canada has warned that the smarter AI technology becomes, the more difficult it will be for humanity to control it. He has also expressed concerns about AI agents recently hacking real-world companies. Speaking to the media after an AI technology conference, Geoffrey Hinton said that such incidents are occurring as these systems become increasingly intelligent. He said, “As these systems become smarter, I think we will see more complicated incidents and their ability to escape our control will become much better.” Hinton said the problem is that humans may not be able to rely on or trust highly intelligent AI models. He explained, “I do not believe that we can simply control them or assume that they will not escape our control.” It is worth noting that in recent days, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have acknowledged that their AI models independently escaped controlled environments and hacked the systems of other companies. Hinton described these incidents as somewhat frightening and said that this is only the beginning of AI hacking. He said, “I think we may see numerous cyberattacks but the future is uncertain. People say defenders have more resources than attackers but the problem is that an attacker only needs to succeed once, whereas defenders need to succeed every time.” Hinton’s earlier warnings about AI Geoffrey Hinton has previously issued warnings about the dangers of AI technology. On one occasion, he said there was a 10 to 20 percent chance that the technology could gradually lead to the extinction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential risks posed by AI. He acknowledged that uncertainty surrounding AI can be unsettling because nobody knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like over the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it. Earlier, in August 2025 while speaking on a podcast, Hinton said that AI is not only learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand but there is also no reliable way to simply switch it off. Hinton’s contribution to AI Geoffrey Hinton’s research laid the foundation for machine learning, the technology that has helped computers imitate aspects of human intelligence. However, for the past several years, he has been campaigning for AI to be made safer. In 2023, Hinton left his job at Google, warning that malicious actors could use the technology to harm other people. In an interview some time ago, when he was asked about the pace of AI development, Hinton said that most experts in the field currently believe that at some point possibly within the next 20 years—humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans. He said, “That is a frightening thought. Right now, you can think of this technology as being like a three-year-old child and children grow up very quickly.” AI could transform world According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He said the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the growth of human physical strength because humans began relying on increasingly powerful machines. He explained that humanity is now doing something similar that could replace human intelligence meaning ordinary human intelligence may no longer advance at the same pace while machines continue to develop. When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said it would depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology. In his view, AI could have extraordinary effects on the medical field and could increase efficiency across almost every industry. However, he emphasized that humanity needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of this technology.

  • Which plane seat is safest?

    Many people choose to travel by air because it is fast comfortable and one of the safest ways to get from one place to another.  However when an airplane accident happens many passengers wonder. Is there a seat that offers a better chance of survival? The good news is that air travel remains far safer than traveling by road or rail. Although plane crashes often receive worldwide attention because they are rare and serious the number of deaths from aviation accidents is much lower than from road accidents. According to global aviation safety data flying has one of the lowest accident and death rates of any form of transportation. Is there a safest seat? There is no seat that can guarantee survival in every accident.  Aviation experts say the outcome depends on many factors including the type of crash the speed of the aircraft and where the impact occurs. However studies of past accidents suggest that some seats may provide a slightly better chance of survival in certain situations. What research shows A review of airplane crashes over 35 years found that middle seats in the rear section of the aircraft had the lowest death rate, around 28%.  By comparison seats in the middle section of the plane had a higher death rate. Another study by Popular Mechanics which examined crashes between 1971 and 2005 found that passengers sitting in the back of the plane were up to 40% more likely to survive than those sitting closer to the front. Why the back may be safer Aviation experts explain that the front of the aircraft often absorbs the first impact during some types of crashes.  Because of this passengers seated in the rear may have a better chance of surviving in certain accidents. The back of the aircraft is also closer to the rear emergency exits which may help passengers leave the plane more quickly if an evacuation is needed. But every crash is different Experts also warn that there is no “perfect” seat. Some crashes affect the rear of the aircraft first while others damage the front or middle section. In accidents involving mountains the ocean or explosions survival may depend more on the nature of the crash than on where a passenger is sitting. For example if a plane crashes into a mountain or falls into the sea the chances of survival are often very low regardless of seat location. Emergency exit seats can help Passengers sitting near emergency exits may be able to leave the aircraft faster after a crash provided the exits remain usable.  Quick evacuation is often an important factor in survival. What Aviation Authorities Say The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says no part of an airplane is officially considered safer than another. Survival depends on many factors, including the type of accident the force of the impact fire and how quickly passengers can evacuate. Research suggests that seats near the back of the aircraft especially the middle seats in the rear section may offer a slightly better chance of survival in some crashes. However no seat can guarantee safety. The most important thing passengers can do is wear their seat belt listen to the safety briefing and follow the cabin crew’s instructions.  These simple steps can make a big difference in an emergency.

    Al Jazeera’s digital domain was restricted in Pakistan following its critical coverage of regional unrest and local election turmoil. Pakistan had become the second country after Israel to ban the Qatari broadcaster. While the statement makes for a soundbite, it oversimplifies both history and the mechanics of state censorship. In reality, the history of sovereign states attempting to mute inconvenient journalism is long, systemic, and filled with precedent. The Reality Behind the Headlines The recent digital restrictions in Pakistan emerged after the network broadcast extensive ground coverage of civil protests, Internet shutdowns, and election-related violence in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. State authorities responded by accusing the international news organization of yellow journalism and selective reporting. Shortly after, users across the country reported that the network’s website had become inaccessible. Repeated bans on Al Jazeera However, this action makes Pakistan the first nation to follow Israel’s 2024 ban overlooks press suppression. Over the past two decades, Al Jazeera has faced repeated office closures, revocations and total broadcast bans across numerous jurisdictions. Egypt (2013): Following political upheaval, the government shut down the network’s local operations and detained several of its journalists under allegations of threat to national stability. The Gulf Blockade (2017): During a severe diplomatic rift, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Jordan blocked the channel’s signals and shuttered its regional bureaus. Israel (2024): Emergency legislation empowered authorities to halt local broadcasts, raid offices, and seize transmission equipment over national security claims. Far from being a rare sequel, the administrative impulse to silence an uncomfortable mirror is an old story retold. The Architecture of Banishment In literary traditions, the suppression of speech is rarely about the words themselves; it is about who holds the authority to define reality. George Orwell  observed in 1984 that the primary goal of totalitarian control is to limit the perimeter of thought by controlling the historical record. When a state apparatus brands unfavorable reporting as inherently fraudulent or subversive, it engages in an act of narrative containment. The label of yellow journalism becomes a rhetorical wall. This label shield the public from realities that disrupt official consensus. This dynamic reflects the bureaucratic absurdity depicted in Franz Kafka’s The Castle, where an elusive authority governs from above while remaining immune to direct questioning. In Kafka’s vision, the citizen is caught in a maze of unwritten rules and opaque decrees, where seeking transparency is treated as an act of insubordination. When digital portals are quietly restricted without formal public legislation or explicit judicial oversight, the state operates within a similarly Kafkaesque realm. The silence itself becomes an instrument of governance. The Illusion of Total Control There is a profound irony in modern media suppression. In classical literature, exile was absolute. A banished figure like Ovid was removed physically from the city center, their voice fading at the empire’s edges. Today, however, censorship in a hyper-connected world is an exercise in futility. Blocking a website or pulling a broadcast signal rarely extinguishes the narrative. Instead, it often draws greater international scrutiny to the very events the state wished to obscure. A phenomenon akin to the Streisand effect.   When governments resort to digital blockades, they reveal a fundamental fragility. True political stability rests on the capacity to withstand criticism.  To edit reality is like trying to stop the tide by breaking the hourglass. The water continues to rise, and the story, inevitably, finds another way to be told.

In a province with thousands of public schools and a large teaching workforce, ensuring regular attendance and maintaining accurate records through traditional methods has remained a formidable challenge. Recognising these issues, the Government of Sindh has sought to replace outdated administrative practices with a technology-driven solution. FRAMES enables teaching and non-teaching staff to verify their attendance using facial recognition technology. Once authenticated, attendance records are securely captured and transmitted to a central monitoring platform, allowing authorised education officials to access real-time information regarding staff attendance across schools. Unlike conventional attendance registers that require manual compilation and verification, FRAMES introduces automation into one of the most fundamental administrative functions within the education sector. The result is not merely a change in attendance recording but a transformation in how educational institutions are monitored and managed. One of the distinguishing features of FRAMES is its ability to function both online and offline. This capability addresses one of the most practical challenges facing digital governance in developing regions. Internet connectivity remains inconsistent in several rural and remote areas of Sindh, making continuous online operation difficult for many schools. Recognising this reality, FRAMES has been designed using an offline-first architecture. Even when internet connectivity is unavailable, teachers and school staff can authenticate their attendance through facial recognition. The application securely stores attendance records on the device and automatically synchronises the data with the central server as soon as internet connectivity is restored. This intelligent synchronisation mechanism ensures that schools continue to operate without disruption while maintaining the integrity and reliability of attendance records. By eliminating dependence on uninterrupted internet access, FRAMES becomes a practical solution for schools across diverse geographical regions of the province. The importance of this feature cannot be overstated. Many digital initiatives fail because they assume ideal technological conditions that do not always exist in the field. By accommodating connectivity limitations, FRAMES demonstrates a realistic understanding of the operational environment within Sindh’s public education system. Beyond attendance verification, FRAMES represents a broader shift towards data-driven governance. Modern public administration increasingly depends on accurate, timely and reliable data to formulate effective policies. Every authenticated attendance record contributes to a growing repository of administrative information that can assist education managers in analysing attendance trends, identifying operational challenges and making informed policy decisions. Real-time monitoring significantly enhances administrative responsiveness. Instead of waiting for monthly reports or manual inspections, district and provincial authorities can obtain immediate insights into attendance patterns. Persistent absenteeism, staffing shortages or unusual attendance trends can be identified promptly, enabling faster interventions and more efficient resource allocation. The implementation of FRAMES also strengthens institutional accountability. Public institutions derive credibility from transparency, consistency and fairness. Digital attendance verification substantially reduces opportunities for manipulation associated with manual record keeping while creating an auditable electronic record of attendance. Such transparency not only improves administrative efficiency but also reinforces public confidence in government institutions. Across the world, education systems are increasingly adopting digital governance solutions to improve institutional performance. Countries in Asia, Europe and Africa have introduced biometric attendance systems, electronic education management platforms and digital monitoring tools to strengthen accountability within public education. International organisations, including UNESCO and the World Bank, have repeatedly emphasised that effective education governance depends upon reliable information systems capable of supporting evidence-based policymaking. Sindh’s adoption of FRAMES therefore aligns with broader international trends in educational management. While technology alone cannot resolve every challenge confronting the education sector, it provides administrators with the tools necessary to monitor institutional performance more effectively and allocate resources more strategically. The implementation of FRAMES also complements the Sindh Government’s wider digital transformation agenda within the School Education & Literacy Department. In recent years, the department has introduced several technology-based initiatives aimed at improving governance, financial transparency, administrative efficiency and public service delivery. Collectively, these reforms signal a transition from conventional bureaucratic practices towards modern digital administration. However, technological innovation alone is not sufficient to guarantee institutional success. The effectiveness of FRAMES will depend upon careful implementation, continuous evaluation and sustained capacity building. Teachers, head teachers and district administrators must receive comprehensive training to ensure that the system is used correctly and consistently. Technical support mechanisms must remain readily available to resolve operational issues quickly and minimise disruptions. Equally important is the need to strengthen digital infrastructure. Reliable electricity, functional devices and stable internet connectivity remain essential components of successful digital governance. Although the application’s offline functionality addresses connectivity constraints, long-term sustainability will require continued investment in technological infrastructure across public schools. Another important consideration relates to data privacy and cybersecurity. Because FRAMES utilises facial recognition technology, the protection of biometric information must remain a top priority. Clear policies governing data collection, storage, encryption and authorised access will be essential to maintaining public trust. International experience demonstrates that digital governance initiatives are most successful when supported by robust legal safeguards and transparent data protection frameworks. Some observers have expressed concerns regarding the growing use of artificial intelligence and biometric technologies within public institutions. These concerns deserve thoughtful consideration. Technology should always serve the interests of citizens rather than replace human judgement. Accordingly, FRAMES should be viewed as an administrative support system that strengthens institutional accountability without diminishing the role of educational leadership or professional responsibility. Indeed, educational quality ultimately depends upon far more than attendance alone.
