New drug treatment Center opens in Karachi

Karachi: Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho has inaugurated a new Opioid Agonist Maintenance Therapy (OAMT) Center at Jinnah Hospital to help people recovering from drug addiction.

Speaking to the media the minister said the center will support people in gradually overcoming addiction and returning to a healthy normal life.

Patients will receive medical treatment regular health monitoring counseling and rehabilitation services under one roof.

Dr. Pechuho said the facility will be staffed by experienced doctors and trained healthcare workers who will closely monitor patients throughout their recovery.

She also stressed the need to speed up HIV screening so that more cases can be detected early and  treated without delay.

Commenting on reports of a patient’s death at Jinnah Hospital the health minister said that every loss of life is deeply tragic.

If negligence was involved she said a full and transparent investigation must be carried out to identify those responsible.

She added that no patient’s death should ever be treated as unimportant and strongly condemned any remarks that appeared to downplay such incidents.

    Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket has crashed into the Moon’s surface while travelling at a speed of 5,400 miles per hour while a telescope in Chile captured evidence of the impact. The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope observed the impact on August 5 and detected colorful spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas. These were produced by clouds of lunar dust that were thrown up by the impact. The ESO telescope recorded the “chemical fingerprints” of the gas cloud which remained visible for around 5 to 10 minutes. The cloud was estimated to extend across dozens of kilometers. Experts had previously said that the impact could provide valuable data for future space experiments and help scientists analyze the effects of collisions involving human-made space debris. As NASA plans to establish a permanent human base on the Moon in the future understanding what happens when space debris strikes the lunar surface will be important. Impact site The impact occurred at a location on the Moon that is considered to be near the boundary between the sunlit and dark regions. When the impact sent clouds of dust into the air, they briefly became illuminated by sunlight. However, observing them with the naked eye from Earth was almost impossible. Although several satellites are currently orbiting the Moon, none was positioned at the time of the impact to directly observe it. The rocket fragment was approximately as tall as a five-story building and weighed around 4 tons. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter are being considered for photographing the impact site. These images could help determine how much damage was caused by the rocket although it may take several days to collect and analyze the information. It is worth noting that the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched in January 2025 and carried two landers toward the Moon. Its boosters returned to Earth while the upper stage continued carrying the landers toward the Moon.

    Robot phone launch date announced for August 12

    Beijing – A Chinese company is set to introduce what is being described as the world’s first robot phone and its unique feature is likely to surprise many people. Robots are gradually becoming part of everyday human life and now a Chinese company has announced the launch of its first robot phone. According to foreign media reports, the company will launch the phone in China on August 12. Its most distinctive feature is its camera which is not fixed like the camera on a conventional smartphone. The phone features a unique robotic camera system that can rotate while recording videos offering movements similar to those of a professional camera. In addition, a special camera module is installed on the top of the phone. It can pop out when needed and rotate in different directions. The phone’s camera system does more than simply move. It also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically track a person or object in front of it. Similarly, if someone is walking or recording a video, the camera can automatically follow their movements. This can make video recording smoother and give the footage a more cinematic appearance. The Chinese company has confirmed that the robot phone will feature a triple rear-camera setup. Its primary camera will have a resolution of 200 megapixels. This means the phone will not only be capable of taking high-resolution photos but will also be able to capture better images of objects from a distance.

  • Ultrasound patch may help improve sleep without medication

    Scientists at the University of Texas in the United States have developed an advanced wearable patch that may help people enter REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep more quickly and remain in this stage for longer without surgery or medication. According to scientists, the device called NEUSLeeP combines electrodes that monitor brain activity in real time. Researchers say the technology can target deeper areas of the brain associated with REM sleep while simultaneously monitoring the brain’s response. Scientists tested the patch on 28 people and the findings were published in the scientific journal Nature Communications. According to the study, people using the device entered REM sleep an average of 43 minutes earlier and spent approximately 16 additional minutes in this stage. The effect was observed both in healthy individuals and in people experiencing sleep problems. Participants reported that the patch was comfortable to wear while only minimal side effects were observed during the study. Researchers also found that ultrasound treatment caused certain changes in the body associated with stress regulation. Among healthy participants, a significant increase in heart-rate variability was observed which is generally associated with the body’s ability to cope with and respond to stress. Changes were also observed in brain circuits involved in emotional processing during brain imaging. According to researchers, these findings are important because disruptions in REM sleep have been linked to mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Scientists emphasized that further large-scale research is needed before NEUSLeeP can be used as a standard treatment. Future studies are planned to determine whether the technology could also be effective for people experiencing chronic insomnia, depression and PTSD.

    When the rainy season begins after the hot summer cases of different illnesses often increase.  Viral fever is one of the common health problems people may experience during changing weather. Try not to touch your eyes nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Eat a healthy diet A healthy diet supports the body’s immune system. During the rainy season include fresh fruits vegetables lentils, milk yogurt and eggs in your meals. Foods containing vitamin C and zinc can also be part of a balanced diet. Try to avoid unhygienic street food and foods that are heavily fried. Drink safe and clean water Rainy weather can increase the risk of infections caused by contaminated water.  Drink properly filtered or boiled water whenever possible. Avoid uncovered drinks and ice from places where water  quality is uncertain. Drinking enough clean water throughout the day also helps prevent dehydration. Take care after getting wet If you get caught in the rain change out of wet clothes as soon as possible and dry  your hair properly. Staying in wet clothes for a long time can make you uncomfortable and may contribute to illness. If needed take a warm shower and change into clean, dry clothes. Get enough sleep and rest Good sleep helps the body maintain a healthy immune system. Poor sleep and constant stress can affect overall health. Try to get around seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Light exercise walking or gentle yoga can also help keep the body active. Avoid close contact with sick people Some viral infections can spread through coughing sneezing and close contact.  Keep some distance from people who are sick and avoid crowded places when possible. Wear a mask when needed and do not share personal items such as towels drinking bottles or utensils with someone who is ill.  Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing. Pay attention to early symptoms Do not ignore symptoms such as fever sore throat headache runny nose or body aches. Get enough rest drink warm fluids and monitor your condition. Avoid taking antibiotics without medical advice because antibiotics do not treat most viral infections and unnecessary use can be harmful. Know when to see a doctor Seek medical care if your fever reaches 102°F (38.9°C) or higher lasts for more than three days or is accompanied by breathing difficulty repeated vomiting fainting, or severe weakness. The rainy season can be enjoyable but taking basic health precautions is important. Good hygiene safe food and water enough rest and early attention to symptoms can help reduce the risk of illness during changing weather.

  • Riyadh, Ankara, Islamabad — and the Empty Chair in New Delhi

    By Rai Saad Ali Three folders, two green and one crimson, changed hands beneath a portrait of Saudi King Salman at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca, the ink still fresh on the pages inside. Erdoğan, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and Shehbaz Sharif held them up for the cameras at the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence on August 7th, 2026. It was a carefully staged image, and the message was unmistakable: three of the Muslim world’s most consequential states, standing together in Islam’s holiest city, making clear that the region’s old security order is no longer one whose terms they are content merely to accept. The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed that day by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, commits each signatory to treat an armed attack against any one of them as an attack against all three. It builds on the bilateral Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed by Islamabad and Riyadh in 2025, but Türkiye’s accession changes the strategic arithmetic considerably. What was previously a two-country understanding, rooted in a decades-old relationship, is now a trilateral framework spanning the eastern Mediterranean, the Gulf and South Asia — and it was signed without so much as a courtesy call to New Delhi. That mutual-defence clause is exactly what has prompted comparisons to NATO’s Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. But the parallel does not hold up well under scrutiny. It would be misleading to oversell this agreement as a “Muslim NATO.” It is not one. The pact names no adversary, creates no joint military command, and does not specify what response would be required if a signatory were attacked. It establishes a framework for defence cooperation and coordination rather than a NATO-style alliance with clearly defined operational commitments, and Saudi officials have stressed that the agreement is defensive in character and not directed against any particular country. That distinction matters. NATO is more than seventy years old and has evolved into a mature institutional and military alliance over generations; the Mecca Agreement is still in its infancy. Over time, it could develop stronger institutions and deeper coordination that bring it closer in character to NATO. For now, that remains a possibility rather than an established trajectory. Yet dismissing the agreement as merely aspirational would be its own mistake. Frameworks matter, especially when they are signed in Mecca rather than in a foreign ministry conference room. The choice of venue was not incidental. It was a statement about whose summit this is, and who now gets to convene the Muslim world’s most powerful states at a moment when Washington’s security guarantees have begun to look less than absolute. That erosion of confidence in Washington is precisely what makes the partnership’s internal logic so coherent: each partner brings something the others lack, and that complementarity is the pact’s real substance. Turkey supplies NATO’s second-largest standing military and an increasingly self-sufficient defence-industrial base — the same industry that in 2023 sold Saudi Arabia drones in what Ankara called its largest defence export deal to date, and which has for years supplied Pakistan with warships and trainer aircraft. Pakistan brings the only nuclear deterrent in the Muslim world and a military establishment with decades of experience training and advising Gulf forces. Saudi Arabia brings the capital and the religious legitimacy that only the custodian of the two holy mosques can offer. What ties these three complementary roles together is a detail that deserves precision rather than a slogan. Pakistan’s air force flies the JF-17 Thunder, co-produced with China. Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, has simultaneously built its own defence-industrial relationship with Beijing even as it remains formally inside the Western alliance system. That a NATO state, a nuclear-armed South Asian state with deep Chinese defence ties, and the Gulf’s foremost oil power can now sit inside the same mutual-defence framework shows how far the unipolar security order of the post-Cold War decades has already eroded. This is not a Pakistani ambition imposed on the region. It is a regional response to a security vacuum that Washington’s and Tel Aviv’s conduct in West Asia has itself created. The timing explains the substance. The pact was signed more than five months into the US-Israel war on Iran, a conflict that has sent missile and drone fire onto Gulf infrastructure and shipping, with Houthi strikes compounding the sense among Gulf capitals that American deterrence no longer covers them the way it once did. Riyadh, battered directly by this spillover, has drawn the obvious conclusion: a security guarantee is only as good as the willingness of the guarantor to honour it, and Washington’s recent conduct has not inspired confidence on that score. Ankara and Islamabad, for their part, were the two capitals best positioned to answer that call — one with hard power, the other with a record of reliability as a security partner to the Kingdom stretching back decades, long before this agreement made it formal. While Ankara and Islamabad were positioning themselves as reliable partners, New Delhi’s response has been telling in its caution. The Ministry of External Affairs said only that India is “closely following” developments and will “study the implications” — the language of a capital reacting to events it did not shape, rather than one setting the regional agenda. That contrast is the real story here, more than any single clause in the agreement’s text. That caution is not merely rhetorical. The substantive concern for India is not abstract: analysts have already flagged the live question of how a mutual-defence clause would be read if India were to conduct cross-border counter-terror operations against targets inside Pakistan, as it has in the past — even as others note such operations sit in a different legal category from state-on-state aggression. That ambiguity is itself a diplomatic cost to India: a Gulf partner it has spent two decades cultivating on energy, trade and counter-terrorism cooperation has now formally elevated Pakistan to treaty-partner status, indifferent to how

  • Night or Morning when to charge your phone?

    Many smartphone users wonder whether it is better to charge their phone overnight or wait until the morning. Some people plug in their phone before going to bed while others prefer charging it after they wake up.  According to technology experts both methods are generally safe but one may be better for your battery’s long term health. Modern smartphones are designed with smart charging technology that helps protect the battery. Once the battery reaches 100%, the phone automatically reduces or stops charging to prevent overcharging. This means leaving your phone plugged in overnight is usually not dangerous and it is very unlikely to cause the battery to explode or become damaged under normal conditions. However experts say that keeping the phone connected to the charger for many hours is not always the best habit. Even after the battery is full a small amount of voltage can remain which may slowly add stress to the battery over time. If this happens every night for months or years it could slightly reduce the battery’s overall lifespan. For this reason many experts recommend charging your phone in the morning whenever possible.  You can unplug it as soon as it reaches the charge level you need helping reduce unnecessary stress on the battery. Battery experts also suggest keeping your phone’s battery between 20% and 80% most of the time.  Staying within this range reduces chemical wear inside the battery and can help it last longer. If overnight charging is your only option there is no need to worry.  Most modern Android phones and iPhones include features such as Adaptive Charging or Optimized Battery Charging. These features learn your daily routine and slow down charging overnight reaching 100% only shortly before you usually unplug the phone. This helps reduce long term battery wear. Heat is another important factor that affects battery life. Using your phone for heavy gaming video editing or other demanding tasks while it is charging can cause it to become very hot. High temperatures can shorten the battery’s lifespan more quickly than charging overnight. Experts also recommend using the original charger or a trusted high quality replacement. Cheap or low quality chargers and cables may not provide stable power and could affect battery performance. It is also a good idea to avoid charging your phone under a pillow blanket or in any place where heat cannot escape easily. Another useful tip is to avoid letting the battery drop to 0% on a regular basis. Instead try to charge it when it falls to around 20%, and if possible unplug it when it reaches about 80%. In the end overnight charging is much safer than it used to be because of modern battery technology. However if you want your phone’s battery to stay healthy for as long as possible charging when needed using adaptive charging features avoiding excessive heat and keeping the battery between 20% and 80% are the best habits to follow.
