ECP backs Punjab polls from December 15

The Election Commission of Pakistan has agreed in principle to hold long-delayed local government elections in Punjab between December 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.

The decision was reached during an ECP meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja on Thursday. The meeting was held to discuss the proposed schedule and preparations for local polls in the province.

A Punjab government delegation attended the meeting. The delegation included Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq, Mines and Minerals Minister Sardar Sher Ali Gorchani, Agriculture Minister Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah and Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat. The Punjab chief secretary and senior local government officials were also present.

The ECP was informed that the delimitation process for Punjab had been completed, clearing an important hurdle in preparations for the elections.

Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja stressed that elected local governments are a constitutional requirement under Article 140-A. He also pointed out that election authorities are legally required to conduct local government elections within the prescribed period after the expiry of elected local bodies.

Punjab officials said the provincial government needed sufficient time to complete administrative preparations, arrange financial resources and deploy staff for the electoral process.

The provincial government proposed the December 15 to January 15 window as the most suitable period for polling. Officials said school examinations would have concluded by then, allowing educational staff to be available for election duties.

The government also cited weather conditions as a factor. Holding the elections during the proposed period could help avoid difficulties associated with heavy fog during other parts of the winter season.

Punjab authorities further informed the ECP that they preferred conducting the elections in phases. Officials said phased polling would allow better security arrangements and make it easier for the administration to manage the large-scale electoral exercise.

The ECP accepted the proposed timeframe in principle and directed the Punjab government to submit a detailed plan promptly if it wanted the elections to be conducted in multiple phases.

The commission said the proposed arrangements could help move the province toward fulfilling its constitutional obligation of establishing elected local governments.

The Punjab government has already allocated Rs12.52 billion for the local elections. It has also approved the recruitment of 900 Union Council secretaries to support the functioning of local bodies.

Punjab has not held local government elections since 2015. The previous polls were conducted in several phases between October and December that year.

The elected local councils began functioning in 2017 after mayors and chairpersons were selected through indirect elections.

The local governments were dissolved in April 2019 by the then Punjab government before completing their full term. The Supreme Court subsequently ordered their restoration, and the councils eventually completed their tenure on December 31, 2021.

Since then, local government elections have remained pending amid repeated changes to Punjab’s local government laws.

Successive provincial administrations amended or replaced the relevant legislation, forcing the ECP to repeatedly revise its preparations and carry out fresh delimitation exercises.

Imran Khan marks three years in jail

Former prime Minister Imran Khan has completed three years in prison after his arrest in the Toshakhana case. He was taken into custody on August 5, 2023, shortly after a court convicted him in the case. Following his arrest, he was shifted from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, to District Jail Attock under strict security arrangements. Imran Khan remained at Attock Jail for one month and 21 days. During that period, security around the prison was tightened, while legal proceedings related to multiple cases against him continued in different courts. On September 26, 2023, the Islamabad High Court ordered his transfer from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Since then, he has remained detained at the facility, where he continues to face legal proceedings in several cases. Under the Pakistan Prison Rules, the former prime minister has been provided better-class facilities because of his status as a former head of government. He is being housed in a separate compound consisting of seven cells inside Adiala Jail. The designated area is secured and managed in accordance with prison regulations. During his three years in custody, Imran Khan has reportedly faced a number of health-related issues, including physical complications that have required medical attention from time to time. His legal team has on several occasions raised concerns about his health and requested appropriate medical care, while prison authorities have maintained that medical facilities are being provided in line with the law. Despite remaining behind bars, Imran Khan continues to be a central figure in Pakistan’s political landscape. Court hearings in various cases involving the former prime minister are ongoing, while his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continues to pursue legal and political efforts regarding his release.

Ali Khursheedi calls for transparent probe into Mi…

Sindh Assembly Opposition Leader Ali Khursheedi has called for a transparent investigation into the Mir Raza case, saying that hundreds of similar incidents have taken place in Karachi and that the authorities must take effective steps to address the situation. Speaking to the media in Karachi, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader said that the Mir Raza case was not an isolated incident. He stressed the need for a transparent and impartial inquiry so that the facts could be established and those responsible could be held accountable. “Hundreds of cases like the Mir Raza case have occurred,” Khursheedi said, adding that a transparent investigation would be necessary to determine what had happened. He also questioned the performance of the Sindh government and urged people in Karachi to assess whether the provincial government was actually delivering on its responsibilities. The opposition leader said that the concerns of Karachi’s residents should be taken seriously, particularly in relation to law and order, governance and the protection of citizens. He questioned whether the people of Karachi believed that the provincial government was working effectively for the city. Khursheedi also commented on an incident that recently took place in the Bahadurabad area. He described the incident as unfortunate and said that it was not appropriate. However, he declined to discuss the matter in detail, saying that questions regarding the issue should be directed to the party leadership. “I am a worker, and you should ask the leadership these questions,” he told reporters when asked about the Bahadurabad incident. The MQM leader further expressed frustration over what he described as the continued deterioration of Karachi. He said that the situation had gone too far and that a stop must now be put to the problems facing the city. Khursheedi alleged that Karachi was being systematically damaged through what he described as a “system” of poor governance and mismanagement. He called for an end to practices that, in his view, were contributing to the decline of the city and affecting the daily lives of its residents. The opposition leader’s remarks come amid renewed concerns over security, governance and accountability in Karachi following the Mir Raza case. The incident has attracted attention and prompted demands for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Khursheedi maintained that the authorities should not treat such cases as isolated incidents. Instead, he called for broader measures to improve law and order and ensure that citizens receive justice when serious incidents occur. He also emphasized the importance of transparency in investigations, particularly in cases that generate public concern. According to him, an impartial investigation could help establish the facts, restore public confidence and ensure accountability. The opposition leader’s criticism also reflects broader political tensions between the Sindh government and opposition parties over the administration of Karachi. Opposition leaders have frequently raised questions about the city’s governance, public services and law-and-order situation. Khursheedi said that Karachi’s residents should ultimately judge the performance of the provincial government based on their everyday experiences. He suggested that the condition of the city itself provides an indication of whether the government is fulfilling its responsibilities. Calling for immediate action, he said that “enough is enough” and that the deterioration of Karachi could not continue indefinitely. He urged authorities to take concrete steps to improve governance, investigate serious cases transparently and prevent further incidents from occurring. The MQM leader’s statements have added to calls for accountability and a transparent investigation into the Mir Raza case, while also highlighting wider concerns about Karachi’s governance and security situation.

Ronaldo, Georgina spark fresh wedding rumours

Cristiano Ronaldo and his fiancée Georgina Rodríguez have reignited speculation about their wedding after the couple were spotted wearing matching diamond rings during a summer getaway in Mallorca, Spain. The appearance quickly fuelled rumours that the football icon and his longtime partner may finally be preparing to tie the knot. Photographs published on Friday showed Ronaldo and Rodríguez boarding a luxury yacht with friends while enjoying their holiday in Mallorca. According to The Sun, the Portuguese superstar was seen wearing a large diamond ring on the ring finger of his left hand, a finger traditionally associated with wedding and engagement bands. Rodríguez was also photographed wearing the engagement ring Ronaldo gave her after proposing last year. The sight of both partners wearing diamond rings on their ring fingers immediately sparked fresh speculation that a wedding could be approaching. The rumours gained further momentum after an unverified notice circulated online claiming the couple planned to marry on Saturday at Quinta da Regaleira, a historic estate in Portugal. However, the claims were never officially confirmed and were later dismissed. Sources close to the couple denied the reports, pointing out that Quinta da Regaleira remained open to the public on the alleged wedding date and was scheduled to host an evening musical performance, making a private ceremony highly unlikely. Fans nevertheless continued to speculate on social media. One user on X wrote: “They have been wearing matching luxury rings for years, but hopefully this means the actual date is finally set.” Another commented: “If he still failed his promise he said, ‘the next day after the World Cup, he will propose to her with the WC trophy.’” Although neither Ronaldo nor Rodríguez has publicly commented on the latest rumours, the couple have repeatedly spoken about their commitment to one another. They have been together since 2016 and share a family with their children, while Rodríguez also helps raise Ronaldo’s older children. Ronaldo has previously addressed the topic of marriage, explaining that he intends to marry Rodríguez when the time feels right. Speaking about his future plans, he said: “I’m going to marry her because I believe it’s the right time. Not just because she’s the mother of my children, but because she’s the person I love most.” The heartfelt statement has frequently been cited by fans whenever speculation about the couple’s wedding resurfaces. For now, there has been no official confirmation that wedding plans are underway. Despite the excitement generated by the matching diamond rings, reports of an imminent ceremony remain unverified. Still, the latest photographs have once again captured the imagination of fans, many of whom hope the football superstar and his longtime partner will soon make their relationship official after years together.

The announcement was made during a meeting with representatives of the Sindh High Court Bar Association and the Karachi Bar Association at the Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry. The meeting focused on improving facilities for women litigants and addressing challenges faced by female lawyers in the legal profession. During the discussion, the chief justice said the proposed centres are part of broader judicial reforms aimed at creating a more welcoming and convenient environment for women seeking legal assistance.
