Android 17 feature may help reduce motion sickness

Some people may suddenly experience nausea and dizziness while travelling by plane, train, ship or car. This condition is medically known as motion sickness and people affected by it may experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms.

If you are also one of those people who experience dizziness or nausea while travelling in a moving vehicle, you are not alone. Many people around the world experience this problem.

Generally, experts advise people suffering from motion sickness to avoid using their phones. However, Google has now introduced a new feature called Motion Assist for Android smartphone users.

According to a report by Android Authority, Google has started gradually rolling out this feature. It is part of the Android 17 operating system and is being introduced first for Google Pixel phones. The feature is designed to help reduce the severity of motion sickness while travelling in a vehicle.

What causes motion sickness?

Motion sickness is a somewhat mysterious condition and its exact cause is not fully understood. However, experts have identified several possible reasons. One thing is clear: motion sickness can occur when our senses send conflicting signals to the brain.

For example, if you are sitting on a swing that is moving up and down, your eyes may see one thing, your muscles may sense something else while your inner ear experiences something completely different. The brain may struggle to process these conflicting signals resulting in dizziness or nausea.

Experts believe that the inner ear plays an important role in motion sickness because it helps control our sense of balance. The inner ear is part of a network known as the vestibular system which sends information about the body’s movement and surroundings to the brain.

The brain combines information from different parts of the body to make sense of what is happening but sometimes these signals can become confusing. For example, while traveling on an airplane, you may feel movement but your eyes may tell your brain that you are sitting still.

A similar situation can occur while travelling on a river or at sea. You may be sitting or standing on a stable surface while still experiencing a sensation of movement.

Some passengers particularly those sitting away from the driver’s seat in a car can experience the same thing. All of these situations can result in motion sickness.

What is Google’s new feature and how does it work?

Google has been working on this feature for quite some time. The code for the feature was first spotted in December 2024 and development has continued since then. It has now become part of Android 17.

Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to find it by going to Settings then Your Profiles and All Services. From there, users can access the Personal and Device Safety section and enable the feature.

Once enabled, Motion Assist will automatically activate when the phone detects that it is inside a moving vehicle. Google will also provide a Motion Assist option in Quick Settings allowing users to manually turn the feature on or off.

When the feature is active, users will have several customization options. They will be able to change the colour, appearance and other aspects of the motion indicators. During a journey, motion dots will appear on the screen to help reduce the feeling of nausea.

It should be noted that the feature does not guarantee complete relief from motion sickness but it may still prove helpful.

Are there other simple ways to prevent motion sickness?

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), several simple measures may help reduce or prevent motion sickness. These include:

  1. Prefer sitting in the front seat of a car or bus.
  2. Choose a window seat on an airplane or train.
  3. If possible, lie down and close your eyes.
  4. Drink plenty of water and avoid tea or coffee.
  5. Avoid eating large meals before travelling.
  6. Avoid smoking.
  7. Distract yourself with activities such as listening to music but avoid reading.
  8. Take deep breaths to stay calm or close your eyes and count backward from 100.
  9. Look at a stationary object such as looking at the sky while traveling in a vehicle.
  10. If available, chewing a small amount of ginger may also help.
  11. The smell of mint or using mint candies may also provide some relief.

  • The Cost of Carelessness

Through the columns of your newspaper, I would like to draw attention to the growing problem of carelessness in our society. Many accidents and difficulties could be prevented if people and authorities took their responsibilities seriously. Careless driving, ignoring traffic rules, poor road conditions, and negligence by concerned departments are putting innocent lives at risk. People often drive at high speed, use mobile phones while driving, or ignore traffic signals. At the same time, damaged roads and a lack of proper safety measures make the situation worse. The cost of such carelessness is very high. Families lose their loved ones, people suffer injuries, and society faces unnecessary financial and emotional burdens. These problems cannot be solved unless everyone understands their responsibility. I urge the authorities to strictly enforce traffic rules, improve road conditions, and take action against negligence. Citizens should also follow safety rules and act responsibly.

Creative expression as survival in times of crisis

In times of severe military occupation, state violence, and political trauma, art and literature undergo a fundamental transformation. They shift from aesthetic expression to vital tools for survival, record-keeping, and resistance. When conventional channels of news, speech, and movement are heavily restricted or censored, art and literature fulfill critical functions within a society. Documenting Counter-Narratives and Resisting Erasure In occupied zones, official narratives often frame political conflict using terms like normalcy or integration. They sanitize structural violence and human suffering. Kashmiri writers, poets, and essayists use narrative to preserve collective memory against state-enforced amnesia. Through poetry, fiction, and memoirs, literature captures the psychological reality of curfews, enforced disappearances, communication blackouts. It reminds of the loss of autonomy, rendering the lived experience of civilians indelible. Fine arts, illustration, and graphic art record incidents and emotional states that photojournalism or state-approved media often cannot access or transmit.  Processing Collective and Intergenerational Trauma Art creates a necessary intellectual and emotional container for a traumatized populace. Concepts such as unheimlich (the uncanny, or feeling un-homed in one’s own land) or grief over exile and displacement find structural expression through creative metaphors. Poetic forms allow writers to articulate loss, mourning, and fear in ways that transcend direct prose. The work of iconic Kashmiri poets such as the late Agha Shahid Ali, whose poetry continues to resonate. It demonstrates how verse can turn localized grief into a universal cry for human dignity. Artists frequently turn to raw mediums like paint, installation, and physical textiles to project the interiority of living under siege, using symbolic motifs like barren land, barbed wire, cages, or domestic objects disrupted by violence. Evading Censorship Through Metaphor and Allegory When direct political discourse leads to state surveillance, detentions, or legal suppression, creative expression relies on metaphor, symbolism, and myth. Playwrights and novelists weave political critiques into historical, mythological, or surreal settings, allowing themes of oppression, tyranny, and liberation to be discussed safely. On the ground, quick visual mediums like graffiti, posters, and digital art become decentralized tools. The mediums act for mass communication and solidarity, circulating rapidly across networks even during communication rollbacks.  Transcending Boundaries and Building Global Solidarity Art and literature serve onnect the isolated region to the global diaspora and international human rights communities. On memorial dates like August 5 (observed as Youm-e-Istehsal or Black Day by Kashmiris and solidarity groups worldwide), exhibitions, literary readings, poster competitions, and performance art allow communities across the world to bear witness to the ongoing struggle. Art transforms passive sympathy into active political consciousness. It forces the global audiences to confront physical realities of occupation beyond distant headlines. In times of intense crisis, art does not exist as an escape from reality. Rather, it becomes the definitive site where human dignity, historical truth, and resistance are actively preserved.

  • How to keep your inverter battery healthy

Inverter batteries have become common in many homes especially in areas where power cuts are frequent.  However many people forget to maintain the battery properly.  Knowing when to check the water level and how much water to add can help keep a battery working well. Check the water level regularly In traditional lead acid batteries the water level slowly decreases with use.  That is why it is important to check it from time to time. If the inverter is used less often checking the battery every two to three months may be enough. With heavier use it may need to be checked more often. A very low water level can affect the battery’s internal parts and may reduce its lifespan. Watch for signs of low water If your inverter is giving less backup than before the battery feels unusually hot, or its performance keeps getting worse check its condition and water level.  However low water is not always the only reason for battery problems. If the issue continues have the battery checked by a professional. Add the right amount of water When adding water, check the level marked on the battery. The water should stay between the minimum and maximum lines. If the level is below the minimum mark add the required amount carefully.  Never fill the battery above the maximum level. Do not overfill the battery Adding extra water does not make a battery last longer.  Overfilling can cause the electrolyte to spill out and may damage nearby parts.  Always keep the water within the recommended level. Use distilled water Avoid using ordinary tap water in batteries that require topping up. Minerals and other substances in tap water can damage the battery over time. Distilled water is generally recommended but always follow the instructions provided by the battery manufacturer. Not every battery needs water Not all inverter batteries are the same.  Some are maintenance free and do not need to be opened or filled with water. Before opening a battery or adding anything to it check its type and read the manufacturer’s instructions. Be careful while Checking the battery Lead acid batteries can contain corrosive liquid so wear protective gloves and protect your eyes when handling them.  Keep cigarettes flames, and sparks away from the battery. If the battery is swollen, leaking or becoming extremely hot, do not try to open or repair it yourself. Contact a qualified technician. •Regular Maintenance •Can extend battery life •Taking simple care of your inverter battery can help maintain its performance. Check the water level when needed use the correct type of water keep the battery clean and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to help keep it in good condition.

  • Blood treatment removes forever chemicals

A new study suggests that a blood cleaning treatment used to lower cholesterol may also help remove harmful “forever chemicals” from the body. The treatment called apheresis is mainly used for people whose high cholesterol cannot be controlled with medication.  During the procedure blood is taken from one arm and passed through a special filter that removes excess fats. The cleaned blood is then returned to the body through the other arm. At the Technical University of Dresden in Germany, home to one of the world’s largest apheresis centers around 10,000 of these treatments are performed each year. For the study researchers examined used filter bags from the apheresis machines to see what substances had been removed along with cholesterol. They wanted to find out whether the filters could also remove harmful forever chemicals toxic substances that remain in the environment and the human body for a very long time as well as tiny plastic particles known as microplastics. The researchers say the early findings are promising. If future studies confirm these results apheresis could become a useful way to reduce the amount of certain harmful pollutants in the body in addition to lowering cholesterol.
