Netflix addresses Gandhari plagiarism allegations before release

Netflix has finally addressed the plagiarism controversy surrounding its upcoming film Gandhari, following allegations by writer Kalyan Bandi that the project bears similarities to an original story he claims to have developed several years ago.

The controversy gained attention after Bandi alleged that he had written a story titled Gandhari in 2019. According to the writer, his concept revolved around a mother who transforms into a powerful, almost divine figure while trying to rescue her child from a human trafficking network. He claimed that he later pitched the idea to Monika Shergill, who was associated with Voot at the time and is now Netflix India’s Vice President of Content.

Bandi said he submitted an eight-page document containing his story and synopsis but was informed that the project did not fit the platform’s content slate. However, after Taapsee Pannu’s Gandhari was announced in 2025, he raised concerns over what he believed were similarities between his concept and the upcoming film.

The writer subsequently sent a legal notice seeking Rs 40 lakh in compensation. However, Bandi has maintained that financial compensation was never his primary objective. Instead, he has repeatedly said that he wants his contribution to be acknowledged if his original idea was used.

Netflix has now responded to the allegations through Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films at Netflix India. Speaking at the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai, she said the streaming platform takes questions surrounding artistic attribution seriously.

She explained that Netflix receives numerous pitches and maintained that the story presented by Bandi is different from the film created by writer Kanika Dhillon and actress Taapsee Pannu. She also urged audiences to watch the movie before drawing conclusions about the allegations.

She further emphasized Netflix’s commitment to supporting original storytelling and giving recognition to writers regardless of their previous experience in the industry. According to her, the platform values originality whether a storyteller has already worked on several films or is making their first project.

Meanwhile, Dhillon’s production company, Kathha Pictures, has strongly rejected the plagiarism allegations. The production house stated that the claims are false and unequivocally denied them, maintaining that Gandhari is an original project written and produced by Dhillon and developed under Kathha Pictures.

The controversy comes shortly before the film’s release, placing additional attention on the project as audiences await its arrival on the streaming platform.

Directed by Devashish Makhija, Gandhari features Taapsee Pannu in the lead role and also stars Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Jatin Sarna. The film is expected to explore themes of motherhood, revenge and the lengths a parent may go to protect a child.

Despite the ongoing dispute, Netflix and the filmmakers have maintained that the film is an original work. With the allegations now publicly addressed by the streaming platform, viewers will have the opportunity to watch Gandhari themselves and assess the story when it premieres on Netflix on September 3.

GUJRAT: A disturbing incident involving newborn twins abandoned in Gujrat has been reported from the Madina Syedan area within the jurisdiction of Sadar Gujrat Police Station. According to rescue officials, a newborn baby boy and girl were found after allegedly being abandoned inside a shopping bag. The infants were subsequently handed over to Child Protection Gujranwala for care and protection. Doctors who examined the newborn twins said that both babies were in good health. The children are now under the supervision of the relevant child protection authorities as further arrangements are being made for their care. Police have reportedly traced the woman believed to be the mother of the newborn twins. She is currently under police custody while receiving treatment at a hospital. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the woman, while investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to police sources, the initial investigation suggests that the woman’s husband had contracted another marriage. Police sources said the alleged abandonment of the twins may have been linked to the distress caused by the second marriage. The reported motive remains part of the preliminary investigation, and authorities are expected to gather further evidence before reaching a final conclusion about what led to the incident. The case has drawn attention to concerns surrounding the safety and protection of newborn children. Child protection authorities are currently responsible for the welfare of the two infants following their recovery. The newborn twins abandoned in Gujrat were reportedly found in a vulnerable situation, but rescue officials said both children were healthy when they were transferred to the child protection authorities. Police are continuing their investigation and are expected to determine the full circumstances of the case, including how and when the babies were abandoned and whether any other individuals were involved. The incident also highlights the importance of timely intervention by rescue services and child protection institutions in cases involving abandoned or vulnerable children. Further legal action against the woman will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and the evidence collected by police. Authorities have not indicated that the investigation has concluded, and the reported reason for the abandonment should therefore be treated as an initial finding rather than an established fact.

Tom Holland refers to Zendaya as his wife yet again in an interview

Wedding buzz around Tom Holland and Zendaya has been building for months, with speculations running wild across social media about whether the two co-stars have quietly tied the knot. Despite the constant chatter, neither actor has stepped forward with an official confirmation of any wedding ceremony. Even so, Holland has repeatedly let small remarks slip in interviews, comments fans have latched onto as strong hints that the couple may already be married. Each time he has brought it up, it has added fresh fuel to a rumour that simply refuses to die down. His latest comment, though, might be the boldest one yet. During an appearance on the U.K.’s Dish podcast, Holland was put through a quickfire round of questions and asked who he’d choose to bring along on a holiday to Greece. Without missing a beat, he named his wife as the obvious pick for that kind of trip. He jokingly mentioned about how strange it would sound if he instead turned around and told her he was taking his Odyssey co-star Matt Damon along instead. This was not a one-off slip either. Just about a week earlier, in a separate conversation with Wired, Holland was shown an online fan theory questioning whether Athena harboured romantic feelings for Odysseus. His response was instant. He dismissed the idea outright, joking that she could not possibly, since she was already married to him. Taken together, the two remarks suggest that Holland is not being entirely careless with his words. If anything, the repeated references seem almost deliberate, as though he is comfortable letting the truth slip out in small doses rather than making a formal announcement. Fans, meanwhile, have continued piecing together these breadcrumbs, treating each interview as another clue in what has become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about relationship mysteries. Neither Holland nor Zendaya has addressed the speculation directly, and both have generally kept the details of their personal life away from the public eye. Still, moments like these keep the rumour mill running, with fans convinced that an official confirmation is only a matter of time. For now, all they have to go on are Holland’s casual slips, each one adding another layer to a story neither star seems in a rush to fully clarify.
