Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has said construction of a 480-kilometre railway track from Karachi to Rohri will begin next year.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi, where Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State Kheial Das Kohistani, Fahad Haroon and other officials were also present.

During the meeting, Abbasi said Pakistan Railways would soon begin transporting fuel, automobiles, minerals and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through its network.

He said around 11,000 tonnes of coal was currently being transported from Thar to the national grid every day.

Abbasi also remarked that only two or three countries could be considered Pakistan’s enemies.

The Sindh governor praised the government for ensuring uninterrupted supplies of petroleum products despite the ongoing challenges.

Hashmi particularly appreciated the measures taken by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik to maintain the supply of fuel across the country.

Ali Pervaiz Malik said stakeholders had extended full cooperation to ensure the uninterrupted availability of petroleum products.

The meeting also discussed measures to strengthen transportation and logistics infrastructure and improve coordination between relevant federal and provincial authorities.

    Punjab has launched a province-wide campaign to curb major sources of air pollution ahead of the winter smog season, targeting brick kilns, industrial units, plastic manufacturers, construction sites and smoke-emitting vehicles. The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is focusing on early action to control emissions before pollution levels rise during the colder months. Regional teams will step up inspections, enforce environmental laws and ensure the use of pollution-control equipment across the province. The EPA reviewed its anti-smog preparations at a meeting chaired by Director General Syed Musa Raza. Directors from EPA offices and regional field officers assessed district-level readiness, enforcement targets and monitoring systems. The DG directed field teams to accelerate inspections and take strict action against environmental violations. The agency has also increased monitoring of construction sites, where dust contributes significantly to particulate pollution. Officials inspected fog cannon operations and instructed major construction sites to keep anti-smog equipment running. They also directed teams to activate fog cannons and mist sprinklers in areas where particulate pollution rises and the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds permissible limits. Industrial units must keep their emission-control and filtration systems fully operational throughout the pre-smog period. The EPA warned that factories that bypass pollution-control systems could face sealing, prosecution and financial penalties. Special enforcement teams will also check heavy transport vehicles at major city entry and exit points. Officials will conduct emissions tests and take legal action against vehicles that exceed prescribed limits. EPA enforcement figures from January 1 to July 25, 2026, show the scale of the campaign. Teams inspected 45,736 brick kilns across Punjab, demolished 777 illegal structures, sealed 419 units, registered 762 FIRs and imposed fines worth Rs67.76 million. The agency also inspected 27,384 industrial units during the period. Authorities sealed 694 facilities, demolished 272 structures, registered 175 FIRs and imposed fines totaling Rs123 million over environmental violations.

According to university spokesperson Dr. Khurram Shehzad, Punjab University has witnessed an unprecedented response to admissions this year, with more than 85,000 applications received for various academic programmes by July 31. The university also recorded its highest-ever participation in the entry test, while the application deadline remains August 4. He claimed that the institution’s success had prompted certain groups to launch what he termed a deliberate propaganda campaign. The spokesperson said the controversy involving the two former sports students stemmed from disciplinary issues rather than the serious allegations circulated on social media. He maintained that the matter originated after a dispute between members of the girls’ sports hostel and disagreements related to team selection. According to the university, the students were involved in repeated altercations with fellow athletes, prompting the hostel administration to initiate an inquiry. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the students concerned were instructed to vacate the hostel. However, the university alleged that they refused to comply and later became involved in another confrontation, after which police were called following an emergency complaint. The incidents led the hostel inquiry committee to hold emergency meetings and ultimately order the closure of the girls’ sports hostel. The university further stated that one of the former athletes was not selected for the baseball team because of disciplinary concerns rather than sporting performance. It alleged that she later threatened to leave the university if she was not included in the squad and voluntarily applied to withdraw her original academic documents. During the document collection process, the university claims she, along with another former student and several others, attempted to pressure the administration by threatening to release a video portraying an alleged suicide attempt if their demands were not met. Punjab University said both students voluntarily collected their academic documents and left the institution. It also claimed that one of them subsequently joined another university’s sports team while Punjab University went on to win the championship without her. The university said it possesses evidence supporting its position and confirmed that faculty members, staff, and female students from the Department of Sports have submitted a formal complaint to the cybercrime authorities against the two former athletes and individuals allegedly involved in what it described as an organised campaign against the institution.
