Karachi issues traffic plan for Chehlum procession

KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police has announced a comprehensive traffic management plan ahead of the central Chehlum procession on Tuesday, urging commuters to use alternative routes as several major roads will remain closed during the religious event.

According to the traffic arrangements, the main Chehlum procession will begin from Nishtar Park at 9:00am and proceed along its traditional route. M.A. Jinnah Road will remain closed to regular traffic for the duration of the procession to ensure the safety of participants and maintain security.

Authorities have prepared a series of traffic diversions to minimize disruption across the city. Vehicles traveling from Saddar towards Tower will be redirected through Preedy Street and I.I. Chundrigar Road, while motorists approaching from Shahrah-e-Quaideen will be diverted via Kashmir Road and People’s Chowrangi.

Traffic from Korangi, Landhi and the National Highway will be routed through Rashid Minhas Road and the Super Highway. Commuters coming from Nazimabad will be able to use Lasbela, Garden and Nishtar Road, while traffic from Liaquatabad will be diverted from Lasbela Chowk towards Nazimabad No. 10.

Motorists traveling from Hassan Square and Shahrah-e-Faisal have also been advised to follow designated diversion routes through Society Light Signal, Teen Hatti and Sher Shah Suri Road. Drivers using Jamshed Road toward Guru Mandir have been asked to use Bahadur Yar Jang Road or Soldier Bazaar Road as alternate routes.

Traffic police further announced that heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter Karachi from 10:00am until the conclusion of the procession. Parking will also be prohibited along the procession route, and any vehicle found violating the restrictions will be removed immediately.

Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala will be observed across the country on Tuesday with mourning processions and religious gatherings taking place under heightened security arrangements.

Silver also posted notable gains in the domestic market. The price of silver rose by Rs280 per tola to Rs6,939, while the rate for 10 grams increased by Rs240 to Rs5,949. The latest rise comes after substantial increases recorded earlier in the week. On Thursday, gold prices jumped by Rs11,300 per tola, while Wednesday saw another sharp increase of Rs10,000 per tola, reflecting sustained strength in global bullion markets and continued investor demand for the precious metal. Earlier in the week, however, gold prices had briefly softened. On Tuesday, the per-tola price slipped by Rs500 before rebounding strongly over the following days. Despite that temporary dip, the overall trend this week has remained firmly upward, pushing gold to fresh record levels in Pakistan.

    LAHORE: Government College University (GCU) Lahore has become fully paperless after shifting its administrative operations to a cloud-based digital system, marking a major step towards modern and technology-driven governance. The transformation has been achieved through the successful implementation of the Punjab Information Technology Board’s (PITB) e-Filing and Office Automation System. The platform has been provided to the university free of cost on the special directives of the Punjab government. Under the new digital framework, administrative activities across all university departments will now be managed online through a single platform. Faculty and staff can submit leave applications, travel requests and annual performance reports, while official orders and administrative correspondence will also be processed digitally. The system will also replace conventional paperwork for departmental digital notes, approval of visiting faculty payments, purchase requests and meeting agendas. As a result, the traditional practice of physically moving files from one office to another will be eliminated. Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Umar Chaudhry described the move as an important milestone in the university’s digital transformation. He said paperless administration was not merely an environmental initiative but represented a structural shift towards greater transparency, efficiency and accountability. He added that eliminating administrative delays and manual file tracking would allow faculty members and heads of departments to devote more time and attention to teaching and research. He said the initiative could position GCU as a leading example of digital transformation among public-sector universities in Punjab. According to a university spokesperson, the paperless system is part of a broader digitalisation programme launched under the vice chancellor’s leadership during the previous academic year. The university had already introduced online approval mechanisms for student society events and digital billing for payments to visiting faculty. GCU is also preparing to launch a comprehensive e-Services Portal aimed at improving campus facilities. The upcoming platform will enable staff to submit maintenance requests and seek other support services digitally, helping resolve infrastructure-related issues more efficiently without disrupting academic activities. The university’s digital transformation is also extending beyond the campus. Work is underway to digitise the records of its alumni, further expanding the institution’s efforts to establish a modern, technology-based administrative system.

      Although companies around the world—particularly in China—are making rapid progress in developing humanoid robots capable of walking, moving, and interacting like humans, creating robotic faces that display truly lifelike expressions has remained one of the biggest challenges in robotics. Engineers have long struggled to replicate the subtle emotions and facial movements that make human communication so natural. A Chinese startup is now attempting to bridge that gap by introducing a highly realistic robotic head that closely resembles a human face in both appearance and expression. The innovation represents a significant step toward narrowing the divide between humans and machines. The company behind the project, AgiBot Farm, was founded in 2024 by Yuhang Hu, an engineer from Columbia University. Its latest creation, the Origin M1, is an advanced robotic head designed to reproduce a wide range of human facial expressions with remarkable precision. Unlike conventional robots that often appear stiff or expressionless, the Origin M1 can imitate subtle facial movements that are essential to human interaction. These include raising or furrowing the eyebrows, producing a gentle smile, moving the eyes naturally, and displaying other delicate expressions that convey emotions. Such realistic facial behavior makes conversations with the robot feel more natural and engaging. Beneath its lifelike silicone skin lies an intricate mechanical system powered by 25 to 42 ultra-quiet micro motors, depending on the model. These miniature motors function similarly to human facial muscles, expanding and contracting in coordinated patterns to create highly accurate facial movements. This sophisticated design allows the robot to produce smooth and realistic expressions instead of the rigid movements commonly associated with traditional robots. The robot’s eyes are equally advanced. Hidden within its pupils are tiny cameras that enable it to observe and analyze its surroundings. These cameras help the robot detect objects, monitor movement, and better understand the environment, allowing it to respond more intelligently during interactions. To further enhance communication, the Origin M1 is equipped with built-in microphones and speakers. These components allow the robot to hear human voices, process spoken language, and engage in conversations. This combination of vision, hearing, and expressive facial movements brings the robot much closer to human-like communication than previous generations of humanoid technology. However, such cutting-edge innovation comes at a premium price. The most advanced version of the Origin M1 is currently available for approximately US$150,000, making it suitable primarily for research institutions, technology companies, and specialized industrial applications rather than everyday consumers. Looking ahead, AgiBot Farm plans to make the robot even more intelligent by integrating lip-sync technology and large language models (LLMs). These upgrades will enable the robot not only to understand spoken language more effectively but also to generate facial expressions that match the tone, emotion, and context of a conversation. As a result, future versions of the Origin M1 could communicate in a way that feels increasingly natural, empathetic, and human. The development of robots like the Origin M1 highlights the rapid pace of artificial intelligence and robotics. As these technologies continue to evolve, experts believe that highly expressive humanoid robots could eventually play important roles in healthcare, education, customer service, research, and companionship, bringing humans and machines closer together than ever before.

    At least 26 people, including women and children, have lost their lives after five days of heavy rainfall across the plains and mountainous districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The severe weather has also left several people injured and caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure in multiple parts of the province. The PDMA’s latest report stated that the fatalities include two women and four children, highlighting the devastating human impact of the ongoing spell of heavy rain. In addition to the deaths, six people sustained injuries in weather-related incidents reported across affected districts. The continuous rainfall triggered flash floods, landslides, and structural collapses, causing widespread destruction in both urban and rural areas. According to the disaster management authority, 65 houses have been damaged, with 41 homes suffering partial damage and 24 houses completely destroyed. The damage has displaced several families, many of whom are now relying on emergency assistance. The worst-affected districts include Abbottabad, Swat, Buner, Khyber, Lower Chitral, Lower Dir, Mansehra, Mardan, Peshawar, Shangla, Swabi, Upper Dir, and Upper Kohistan. Rescue teams and local authorities continue to monitor vulnerable areas where additional rainfall may increase the risk of flooding and landslides. The PDMA confirmed that it is working closely with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and other relevant government agencies to coordinate emergency response efforts. Rescue operations, relief distribution, and damage assessments are currently underway to ensure that affected families receive immediate assistance. Authorities have instructed district administrations to accelerate relief activities and provide essential support, including temporary shelter, food, medical care, and other emergency services to displaced residents. Officials are also assessing infrastructure damage and identifying areas requiring urgent rehabilitation. The recent spell of heavy rainfall serves as another reminder of the increasing challenges posed by extreme weather events in Pakistan. Experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and resilient infrastructure to reduce the impact of floods and severe storms on vulnerable communities. Residents living in flood-prone and mountainous areas have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. As rescue and recovery operations continue, government agencies remain focused on protecting lives, supporting affected families, and restoring normal conditions in the worst-hit districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
