Senate seeks PM intervention over Khairpur Dates Research Centre

Islamabad: A major agriculture research project aimed at improving Pakistan’s date production has faced a setback after the proposed Dates Research Centre in Khairpur was excluded from the Public Sector Development Programme 2026 and 2027, prompting the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research to demand immediate reconsideration of the decision.

The committee expressed concern that a project designed to improve date farming, develop disease-resistant varieties, increase exports and support farmers was left out due to financial limitations. The matter was discussed during the 29th meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, chaired by Syed Hussain Tariq, MNA, at Parliament House Islamabad.

Officials informed the committee that the joint project of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur for establishing the Dates Research Centre could not be included in the PSDP 2026 and 2027 because of limited financial resources.

The Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives informed the committee that the Ministry of National Food Security and Research had prioritized only three new development schemes for inclusion in the national development programme, leaving several important projects outside the plan.

The committee strongly disagreed with the decision and highlighted the importance of the dates sector for Pakistan’s agriculture and economy. Members noted that Pakistan is among the leading date producers, and a dedicated research centre could help farmers increase production, fight crop diseases, improve quality, develop new varieties and boost the country’s share in international markets.

The committee directed the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to formally approach the Ministry of Planning and request a review of the decision. The committee also decided to seek a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss establishing the Dates Research Centre through cooperation between the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur.

During the proposed meeting with the Prime Minister, the committee also plans to discuss other major agriculture challenges including wheat imports, setting a fair minimum support price for wheat, providing DAP fertilizer subsidies similar to regional countries and investigating reasons behind wheat shortages despite earlier reports of surplus stocks.

The committee said agricultural development requires long term planning and research facilities to support farmers and improve food security. The meeting also reviewed concerns regarding artificial sweeteners and flavored drinks, especially their possible health effects on children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

Officials informed the committee that earlier recommendations were made after findings from the National Institutes of Health highlighted possible health risks linked with excessive consumption of such products. The committee was informed that frequent consumption of artificial sweeteners and flavoured drinks may contribute to health problems, including an increased risk of diabetes and other serious diseases.

The committee expressed dissatisfaction over delays in implementing earlier recommendations and directed the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority to urgently review existing regulations. PSQCA was directed to hold a meeting in Islamabad involving committee members, health officials, NIH representatives, mango growers and other stakeholders.

The committee instructed that revised standards should include clear product labels, prevention of misleading claims, visible health warnings, proper expiry date information, suitable fruit pulp requirements and regulations for plastic bottle usage. The National Institutes of Health was also directed to provide scientific evidence regarding health impacts and international guidelines to help improve the regulatory framework.

    KARACHI: Petrol pump dealers across Pakistan have announced an indefinite closure of fuel stations from August 15. The decision comes amid an ongoing strike by goods transporters. Talks between the government and transport representatives have failed to resolve their differences. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association announced the decision on Tuesday after a meeting of representatives from different parts of the country. Association Chairman Malik Khuda Baksh said dealers had given the government 72 hours to address their concerns. He warned that petrol stations would remain closed until the dealers’ demands were accepted. The dealers are mainly seeking an increase in their commission on petrol sales. They are demanding an 8% margin on petrol, saying the existing rate is no longer sufficient to cover rising operating costs. Baksh said the association represents around 14,000 dealers and that members were under growing financial pressure. He said dealers had previously postponed their strike after receiving assurances from the government that their concerns would be addressed. According to the association, the government was given additional time to resolve the issue, but the deadline passed without a satisfactory outcome. The dealers had earlier agreed to delay a planned nationwide shutdown following talks with Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik. At the time, government representatives assured the dealers that their longstanding concerns would be considered. However, the latest announcement indicates that no final agreement has been reached. The dealers have also raised concerns over the mechanism used to determine fuel prices. They have called for greater clarity and timely implementation of decisions concerning petroleum margins. The announcement comes as the country’s goods transport sector remains affected by a separate strike. Transporters have continued their wheel-jam protest after talks with federal and provincial authorities failed to produce a breakthrough. The overlapping disputes could create additional pressure on the country’s fuel supply and transport network if the shutdown goes ahead.

    The federal government has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, while petrol pump owners have announced a nationwide strike after failing to reach an agreement with the government over the newly introduced daily fuel pricing system. Under the latest notification, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has increased by Rs7.15 per litre, rising from Rs360.06 to Rs367.21. The price of petrol has also been increased by Rs4.93 per litre, taking it from Rs315.80 to Rs320.73. The revised prices came into effect on July 22. The increase follows the government’s decision to replace the previous fortnightly fuel price adjustment system with a daily pricing mechanism. Under the new policy, petroleum prices can now change every day depending on international oil prices and fluctuations in the exchange rate. The new pricing mechanism has been strongly opposed by petrol pump owners and fuel dealers. They argue that daily price revisions are difficult to implement and create financial uncertainty for retailers across the country. After negotiations with government officials failed, the All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning at midnight on Wednesday. The association said petrol pumps across Pakistan would remain closed until the government accepts its demands. Association leaders said discussions with the Petroleum Ministry failed to resolve major issues, including dealer profit margins and the implementation of daily fuel pricing. They insisted that the current system is not practical for petrol station operators and would create serious operational challenges. The Petroleum Retailers Association has also expressed support for the strike, raising concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supplies if the dispute continues. Meanwhile, the All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) is expected to decide whether it will formally join the protest. The association has called a meeting of its executive committee to discuss the situation and determine its future course of action. PPDA officials said they had already shared their concerns with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). According to the association, the regulator requested additional time to present the dealers’ concerns to the government before any final decision is made. Fuel dealers believe daily price changes make it difficult to manage inventories, update fuel prices, and maintain smooth business operations. They argue that the previous fortnightly pricing system provided greater stability and reduced uncertainty for both retailers and consumers. The government, however, maintains that the daily pricing mechanism will ensure that domestic fuel prices more closely reflect changes in global oil markets. Officials believe the new system will improve transparency and allow quicker adjustments to international price movements.

The central procession began from Jamia Masjid Pir Wilayat Shah and moved through its designated route before reaching Faisal Gate, Circular Road and Chowk Pakistan, where it was scheduled to conclude. The procession was led by Pir Syed Saeed Shah Gujrati, while a large number of devotees, religious scholars and residents participated in the celebrations. Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi and DPO Faisal Shehzad received the procession outside the Municipal Corporation Gujrat office. The two senior officials exchanged Eid Milad-un-Nabi greetings with the organisers and participants and reviewed arrangements made for the smooth passage of the procession. Assistant Commissioner Gujrat Abdul Qadeer Zarkoon, Chief Officer Municipal Committee Gujrat Zafar Abbas and other officers concerned were also present on the occasion. The district administration and police had made arrangements to facilitate participants and ensure the procession continued peacefully along its designated route. Officials remained present at key points of the route to monitor the arrangements and maintain coordination among different departments. Speaking on the occasion, Pir Syed Saeed Shah Gujrati appreciated the district administration and police for completing what he described as effective arrangements for the Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations. He said the peaceful observance of religious occasions required cooperation between citizens, religious leaders, administration and law enforcement agencies. Pir Saeed Shah also offered special prayers for peace and security in Gujrat district and across the country. He prayed for harmony, unity and stability in Pakistan and urged the faithful to draw guidance from the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The religious leader said Eid Milad-un-Nabi was an occasion for Muslims to renew their commitment to the principles of compassion, justice, tolerance and service to humanity as taught by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). He prayed that Allah Almighty would grant everyone the strength to follow the Seerat-e-Tayyaba in their individual and collective lives. The Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations continued across Gujrat, with religious processions, gatherings and other events being held in different parts of the district. Participants in the central procession expressed devotion and affection for the Holy Prophet (PBUH), while religious slogans and naats echoed along the route. The district administration, police and municipal authorities remained engaged in ensuring that the central procession proceeded according to the planned arrangements and concluded peacefully at its designated point.

She questioned the federal health minister’s position, asking what justification there was for remaining in office if the minister could not ensure the safety and proper administration of a major government hospital. The PPP leader demanded strict legal action against anyone found responsible following the investigation. She said the federal government should accept responsibility for the incident and ensure justice for the families who lost their children. Marri described the loss of innocent lives as irreparable and said those found guilty of negligence should not be given any concession. Her remarks came amid widespread public anger following the PIMS tragedy, which has prompted demands for accountability, improved fire safety systems and stronger emergency preparedness at government hospitals.

    A large-scale HIV screening campaign launched after the emergence of cases at Karachi’s Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital has identified 141 HIV-positive individuals, prompting authorities to intensify investigations and strengthen preventive measures across Sindh. Speaking at a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Regulation and Coordination, Sindh Labour and Human Resources Minister Saeed Ghani said more than 10,500 people were screened in and around Valika Hospital. Of them, 120 tested positive for HIV, including 81 children of registered Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) workers, while the remaining 39 had no affiliation with the institution. Ghani said the provincial government has assumed responsibility for providing treatment to all affected children and is working to ensure they receive the best possible medical care. He added that a panel of leading healthcare experts and hospitals is being formed to oversee the treatment process. As part of precautionary measures, HIV screening was also expanded to Landhi Hospital and surrounding areas. More than 7,500 people were tested, with 21 additional HIV-positive cases confirmed. According to the minister, these individuals had no previous record of treatment at the hospital, suggesting that some infections may have originated from other sources. The minister also revealed that final show-cause notices had been issued to 37 doctors, paramedics and hospital officials following inquiry committee recommendations into the Valika Hospital incident. He warned that anyone found responsible for criminal negligence would face both departmental and legal action. To support affected families, Ghani announced that a Rs2 billion endowment fund has been established under SESSI. The fund will be managed by an independent body to ensure transparency and provide long-term assistance to those impacted by the outbreak.
