Information Ministry accuses Al Jazeera of biased …

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has accused international broadcaster Al Jazeera of presenting a misleading picture of the recently held Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, alleging that its coverage selectively portrayed the electoral process.

In an official statement, the ministry said the broadcaster reported from selected polling stations in Muzaffarabad and relied on carefully chosen interviews and timings that did not accurately reflect the overall conduct of the elections. It claimed the reporting created a distorted impression of the voting process and failed to represent the broader electoral environment.

The ministry further alleged that such coverage appeared aimed at undermining the credibility of the elections and ignoring what it described as the democratic will expressed by voters across the region. It maintained that the people of AJK had exercised their right to vote despite political tensions.

Alongside its criticism of the coverage, the ministry reminded foreign media organisations operating in Pakistan that reporting assignments outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi require prior approval under the country’s External Publicity Guidelines. It urged all foreign correspondents to comply with the regulations governing reporting in other parts of the country.

The AJK elections, however, remained under intense scrutiny after allegations of irregularities and isolated incidents of violence emerged during polling. Opposition parties accused authorities of interfering in the electoral process, while the ruling coalition exchanged allegations of rigging and misuse of state resources.

Human rights organisations also expressed concern over reports of deaths and injuries linked to election-related unrest. They called for transparent and independent investigations into the incidents and stressed that maintaining public order should not come at the expense of fundamental rights, including peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

The elections were held against the backdrop of political unrest that has continued in AJK since last year’s protests over governance reforms and constitutional issues. The controversy surrounding reserved refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly also remained a major political issue during the campaign.

SC to hear Imran access pleas on August 18

The Supreme Court has scheduled five petitions concerning access to jailed former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan for hearing on August 18. A three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed will hear the petitions. Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim are also part of the bench. The cases were previously being heard by a bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar. The bench has now been reconstituted after Justice Mazhar became unavailable at the Supreme Court’s principal seat. The petitions seek permission for Imran Khan’s family members, personal doctors and legal team to meet him in prison. The applicants have also requested access to his medical records and proper arrangements for his medical treatment. The petitions gained renewed attention after PTI lawyers and lawmakers gathered outside the Supreme Court earlier this week, protesting over the continued delay in fixing the cases. A delegation led by PTI lawyer Salman Akram Raja subsequently met the apex court registrar. According to Insaf Lawyers Forum chief organiser Intezar Panjutha, the registrar assured the delegation that five petitions relating to restrictions on meetings with Imran would be listed for hearing. The cause list was expected to be issued ahead of the proceedings. One of the petitions was filed by Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan. She has sought his transfer to Shifa International Hospital, arguing that he requires proper treatment and continuous medical monitoring for an eye-related condition and other health complications. The Supreme Court had earlier directed that details of meetings held by Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi, with family members, lawyers and party leaders in prison be submitted. The newly constituted bench has attracted attention because of the legal positions previously taken by its members in politically sensitive matters. Justice Afghan has been associated with dissenting opinions on several major constitutional and legal issues. He had opposed the constitutionality of trying civilians in military courts and had also dissented in a case involving the transfer of judges between high courts. He has previously granted post-arrest bail to PTI leaders facing cases related to the May 9 violence. Justice Ibrahim was part of a Supreme Court judgment that overturned an earlier order concerning Imran’s right to defend himself in a defamation case filed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court is separately hearing petitions concerning the alleged solitary confinement of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The dispute over access to Imran has remained a major issue for the PTI, which maintains that his family, lawyers and doctors should be allowed regular meetings. The government has continued to face pressure over the prison arrangements surrounding the former prime minister.

Hrithik Roshan reacts amid Kangana Ranaut’s CJP controversy

Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan has found himself back in the headlines after social media users claimed he liked a post mocking Kangana Ranaut amid the actress’ ongoing controversy involving her remarks about the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and student protests in India. The speculation began after a Reddit user shared a screenshot allegedly showing Hrithik’s verified Instagram account liking a meme directed at Kangana. Although the original Instagram post has since been deleted and the like cannot be independently verified, the screenshot quickly went viral, reigniting public interest in the former co-stars’ long-running feud. The meme referenced Kangana while addressing Hrithik directly. It read, “Hrithik Bhai, you could’ve taken one for the team. Kyun khula chhod diya ise desh par?” The post jokingly suggested that Hrithik should have prevented Kangana from becoming a public figure, prompting widespread discussion online after the alleged like surfaced. The viral claim emerged as Kangana continues to face criticism over her comments regarding student-led protests linked to the NEET paper leak controversy. The actress had criticised the protest videos circulating on social media, describing them as “puke-inducing.” Her remarks led to a public exchange with Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das, whom Kangana criticised by questioning his identity as a student. Speaking about Das, Kangana reportedly said, “I googled this person and he is 28 years old. How he claims to be a student I have no clue!” Responding to the actress, Das issued a statement to ANI, correcting her claims. He said, “Even Google provides incorrect information to Kangana Ranaut. It suggests I am 28, but I am actually 27. I am not a student either; Google would confirm that I am not a student. I am a journalist, and I have never claimed to be an active student. I am a student of life… She should also strive to be one.” While Hrithik has not publicly commented on the controversy, the alleged Instagram activity has fuelled speculation that the actor may have subtly reacted to the ongoing trolling surrounding Kangana. However, because the original post has been deleted, there is no independent confirmation that the like was genuine. Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut have shared one of Bollywood’s most high-profile public disputes, dating back to 2016. Their feud began after Kangana referred to Hrithik as her “silly ex” during an interview, implying the two had previously been in a relationship. Hrithik strongly denied the claim and sent the actress a legal notice demanding an apology. The dispute later escalated, with Kangana alleging that the actor had pursued her during the filming of Krrish 3, while Hrithik consistently maintained that no romantic relationship had existed between them. Over the years, the legal and public battle between the two actors has remained one of Bollywood’s most talked-about celebrity feuds, and the latest viral social media claim has once again brought their long-standing dispute back into the spotlight.

Danny Ramirez reveals biggest surprise about Aveng…

Danny Ramirez has opened up about one of the most memorable parts of filming Avengers: Doomsday, revealing that the biggest surprise was not the blockbuster action or the star-studded cast, but the chance to reunite with one of his closest friends. Speaking to People magazine during San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, the actor reflected on his experience working on the highly anticipated Marvel film and described the atmosphere on set as unforgettable.  Ramirez reprises his role as Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon, in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor said returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was exciting on its own, but sharing the experience with longtime friend Lewis Pullman made it even more special. The two actors previously worked together on Top Gun: Maverick and have remained close ever since. According to Ramirez, reuniting on another major project felt like “summer camp,” with the cast enjoying a fun and supportive environment behind the scenes.  The actor explained that the chemistry among the cast members helped create a positive work atmosphere despite the enormous scale of the production. With Marvel bringing together heroes from the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men franchises, Ramirez admitted it was surreal to see so many iconic characters sharing the same set. He said every day offered new surprises, making the experience unlike anything he had worked on before.  Ramirez also spoke about working alongside legendary performers such as Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. In another Comic-Con interview, he praised both actors for their professionalism and dedication, saying he learned a great deal simply by watching them perform. He noted that their decades of experience and command of storytelling inspired him to become a better actor.  Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of Marvel Studios’ biggest crossover events to date. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film features the return of several beloved MCU stars while introducing major characters from other Marvel franchises. Robert Downey Jr. will make his highly anticipated return to the Marvel universe, this time portraying the iconic villain Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man.  For Ramirez, however, the film’s biggest highlight was far more personal than any action sequence or special effect. He said reconnecting with Pullman reminded him of why he loves making movies, emphasizing the friendships that can grow through years of collaboration. That sense of camaraderie, he explained, made every day on set enjoyable and helped create lasting memories beyond the cameras.  As anticipation builds for Avengers: Doomsday, Ramirez’s comments have given fans a glimpse into the film’s positive behind-the-scenes atmosphere. While audiences are eagerly waiting to see Marvel’s biggest heroes unite on screen, the actor says the genuine friendships formed during production may be the most rewarding part of the entire journey.

CM Maryam Nawaz directs crackdown on corrupt SHOs

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the provincial police authorities to take strict action against officers with records of corruption and misconduct, directing that such officials should not be appointed as Station House Officers (SHOs).   According to sources familiar with the development and officials in the Chief Minister’s Office, Maryam Nawaz has instructed Inspector General of Police Punjab to thoroughly screen officers holding important field positions and remove those found to have questionable records. The IG Punjab has been given one week to complete the process and submit a progress report to the Chief Minister’s Office. The Chief Minister stressed that officers known for corruption should not be given charge of police stations anywhere in Punjab. She directed the police leadership to ensure that appointments to the SHO position are based on integrity, professional conduct and performance rather than influence or other considerations.   Under the new instructions, police officers facing credible allegations or having a record of corruption will not be considered for appointment as SHOs. The police hierarchy has also been directed to identify and remove what the government described as “bad elements” from key positions. Maryam Nawaz further ordered the police department to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward crimes against women and children. She called for immediate action against suspects involved in such offences and emphasized that cases involving vulnerable groups should be handled promptly and professionally. The Chief Minister’s latest instructions are being viewed as another step toward her administration’s efforts to improve policing and strengthen public confidence in law-enforcement institutions. She has previously emphasized the need for a people-friendly police force that provides services to citizens without discrimination, corruption or unnecessary interference. The Punjab government has also introduced and promoted measures aimed at improving police accountability and public service delivery, including digital mechanisms for handling complaints, performance-oriented postings and action against officers involved in unlawful activities. The latest directive places particular emphasis on the role of SHOs, who serve as the primary point of contact between citizens and the police at the local level. Their conduct and performance can have a direct impact on how people perceive the overall law-and-order system. A senior official in the Home Department said the government’s objective was to restore public confidence by addressing problems within the police structure, particularly at the station level. The instructions have reportedly been conveyed to the IG Punjab and Regional Police Officers (RPOs) for immediate implementation. Police authorities are expected to review the records of officers posted to important positions and take action against those who fail to meet the required standards. Officials are also expected to submit reports detailing the progress made during the seven-day period. The government is closely monitoring the process to ensure that the directives are implemented rather than remaining limited to administrative instructions. The move comes as the Punjab government continues efforts to improve law and order, strengthen police accountability and enhance the delivery of public services across the province. The crackdown on corrupt officers is expected to further intensify scrutiny of police appointments and postings in the coming days.

France records more than 5,000 deaths during June heatwave

More than 5,000 excess deaths were recorded in France during the severe heatwave that spanned late June and early July. According to data released by France’s national health agency, Santé publique France, 21,674 total deaths from all causes were registered between 17 June and 2 July across the affected regions. Under normal conditions, statistical modeling projected approximately 15,910 deaths for that period, resulting in 5,764 additional or excess deaths, a 36 per cent increase above expected baselines. Public health officials attribute the sharp rise in mortality to the intensity, early onset, and duration of the extreme temperatures, which affected 92 administrative departments representing nearly 98.5 per cent of the country’s population. Over half of the excess deaths occurred during the peak of the heatwave between 25 June and 27 June, with individuals aged 75 and older accounting for roughly two-thirds of the fatalities. The Île-de-France region, which encompasses Paris, recorded the highest impact, experiencing nearly 2,000 excess deaths, an 80 per cent surge above normal levels. The preliminary figures mark the highest excess mortality recorded from a heatwave in France since the historic 2003 heatwave. Authorities noted that the initial tally surpasses total summer heat-related excess deaths from the entire previous year, with consolidated final figures expected following the conclusion of summer health monitoring in the autumn.
