France records more than 5,000 deaths during June heatwave

More than 5,000 excess deaths were recorded in France during the severe heatwave that spanned late June and early July.

According to data released by France’s national health agency, Santé publique France, 21,674 total deaths from all causes were registered between 17 June and 2 July across the affected regions. Under normal conditions, statistical modeling projected approximately 15,910 deaths for that period, resulting in 5,764 additional or excess deaths, a 36 per cent increase above expected baselines.

Public health officials attribute the sharp rise in mortality to the intensity, early onset, and duration of the extreme temperatures, which affected 92 administrative departments representing nearly 98.5 per cent of the country’s population. Over half of the excess deaths occurred during the peak of the heatwave between 25 June and 27 June, with individuals aged 75 and older accounting for roughly two-thirds of the fatalities.

The Île-de-France region, which encompasses Paris, recorded the highest impact, experiencing nearly 2,000 excess deaths, an 80 per cent surge above normal levels.

The preliminary figures mark the highest excess mortality recorded from a heatwave in France since the historic 2003 heatwave. Authorities noted that the initial tally surpasses total summer heat-related excess deaths from the entire previous year, with consolidated final figures expected following the conclusion of summer health monitoring in the autumn.

Tom Holland breaks silence on brand-new project after Spider-Man

Hollywood superstar Tom Holland has broken his silence regarding his latest creative venture outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opening up about his decision to prioritize Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated cinematic epic The Odyssey alongside his wife, Zendaya. Speaking during a recent promotional tour for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the 30-year-old actor addressed rumors surrounding production overlaps between the two blockbuster projects. Holland disclosed that filming schedules for Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek saga initially clashed directly with the filming timeline for his upcoming Fourth Spider-Man installment, creating a major professional dilemma. Holland revealed that his decision to lock in the role in Nolan’s film was heavily influenced by a playful yet decisive nudge from Zendaya. Recalling the pivotal moment when the opportunity arose, Holland shared that Zendaya delivered a humorous ultimatum, urging him not to pass up the chance to work with the legendary director: ”Zendaya jokingly looked at me and said, ‘If you turn down Christopher Nolan, I’m leaving you.’ In all seriousness, working with Nolan has been a lifelong dream, and having Zendaya push me to take that leap made all the difference. It required some very uncomfortable schedule negotiations, but it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.” The scheduling conflict required Holland to hold tough conversations with Sony Pictures executives to delay the production start of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, allowing him to complete filming on The Odyssey first. The Nolan-directed epic, which features an all-star ensemble cast including Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Matt Damon, marks the couple’s first major feature film collaboration outside the Spider-Man franchise. Reflecting on his expanding filmography, Holland noted that stepping into non-superhero roles under visionaries like Nolan has allowed him to mature as an actor. While he remains deeply devoted to Peter Parker, Holland emphasized that exploring grounded, complex character studies is essential for his long-term artistic growth. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey both generating massive global anticipation, Holland’s willingness to navigate high-stakes industry negotiations highlights his evolving standing as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men.

US military reports diverting 35 ships amid Iran m…

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has reportedly stated that 35 commercial vessels were diverted as part of ongoing maritime operations involving Iran, according to media reports citing an official statement. The reported developments have drawn attention to maritime security in the strategically important Gulf region. According to the statement shared by CENTCOM, the U.S. military continues to enforce maritime measures that were reportedly reintroduced last month. Officials claimed that 35 commercial ships had been redirected during the operation. The statement also alleged that two vessels were disabled, while two others were boarded for inspection or brought under operational control. These claims have not been independently verified. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as a major transit route for global oil and gas exports. Any military activity or disruption in the area has the potential to affect international shipping, energy markets, and regional stability. As a result, developments involving the waterway are closely monitored by governments, businesses, and security analysts worldwide. Separate reports indicated that Iranian officials denied speculation regarding any change in policy concerning the Strait of Hormuz. According to those reports, Iran maintained that there had been no new decision affecting the waterway and that its existing policy remained unchanged. Independent confirmation of these statements is limited, and official positions may evolve as the situation develops. Tensions between the United States and Iran have periodically affected maritime security in the Gulf over the years. Military deployments, sanctions, and regional disputes have contributed to an environment where commercial shipping operators closely follow official advisories and security updates before entering the region. As the situation continues to develop, additional information from official government statements, international maritime organizations, and independent reporting will be important in providing a clearer understanding of events. Given the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz, any confirmed changes in maritime operations could have broader implications for global trade, energy supplies, and regional security.

Two more Pakistan cricketers join LPL as Shaheen Afridi withdraws

Two more Pakistani cricketers have secured contracts for the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL), while Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons. Young Pakistani batter Khawaja Nafay has signed with Jaffna Kings ahead of the new LPL season. The promising right-handed batter has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran, who is unavailable for the competition. Naafay’s inclusion provides the Jaffna Kings with an exciting batting option as they prepare for the tournament. The youngster has been regarded as one of Pakistan’s emerging talents and will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in one of South Asia’s premier T20 leagues. Playing alongside experienced international cricketers is expected to provide him with valuable exposure and help accelerate his development. Meanwhile, Pakistan all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has also earned an LPL contract after being signed by Dambulla Sixers. He joins the franchise as the replacement for Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Iftikhar brings considerable experience to the Dambulla squad with his ability to contribute in multiple departments. Known for his powerful middle-order batting and useful off-spin bowling, he has represented Pakistan in all three international formats and has featured in numerous T20 leagues around the world. His versatility is expected to strengthen the team’s balance as it aims to challenge for the LPL title. The addition of Khawaja Nafay and Iftikhar Ahmed further increases Pakistan’s representation in the Lanka Premier League, highlighting the growing demand for Pakistani players in franchise cricket. Their participation also provides another platform for both players to perform against international opposition and gain valuable match experience ahead of future assignments. In a separate development, Kandy Royals have confirmed that Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi will no longer participate in this year’s Lanka Premier League. According to tournament officials, Afridi informed the organizers that he would be unavailable because of personal reasons. As a result, the left-arm fast bowler has withdrawn from the competition before its start. Shaheen’s absence is a significant setback for Kandy Royals, who were expected to rely heavily on his pace, experience and ability to strike with the new ball. Widely regarded as one of the leading fast bowlers in international cricket, Afridi has consistently delivered match-winning performances for both Pakistan and various franchise teams around the world. The franchise has yet to announce a replacement for the star pacer, and further details regarding his withdrawal have not been disclosed. Tournament organizers have respected the player’s decision and stated only that his absence is due to personal reasons. Despite Afridi’s withdrawal, the presence of Khawaja Nafay and Iftikhar Ahmed ensures continued Pakistani representation in the Lanka Premier League. Fans will now be eager to see how the two players perform as they begin a new chapter in one of the region’s most competitive T20 tournaments.

    PSX plunges amid investor jitters

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) came under heavy selling pressure on Wednesday as investors turned cautious amid rising geopolitical uncertainty and external market risks. The benchmark KSE-100 Index surrendered its early gains and remained in negative territory throughout most of the trading session. The market opened on a slightly positive note, with the KSE-100 Index posting modest gains during early trading. However, the positive momentum quickly faded as investors began selling shares across major sectors, causing the benchmark index to reverse course. Selling pressure intensified as the session progressed, dragging the KSE-100 Index down by more than 1,000 points. During intraday trading, the benchmark also touched a low of over 1,800 points below the previous close, reflecting weak investor confidence and heightened market volatility. Analysts said investors remained cautious due to uncertainty surrounding global developments, prompting many traders to reduce exposure to equities and book profits after recent gains. The decline was broad-based, with losses recorded across several key sectors of the market. Automobile assemblers, oil marketing companies, cement manufacturers, fertilizer producers and power generation companies were among the worst-performing segments during the session. The widespread selling indicated that investors were avoiding risk rather than reacting to company-specific developments, highlighting concerns over the broader economic and geopolitical environment. Despite the decline in share prices, trading activity remained healthy. More than 172 million shares changed hands during the session, while the total value of traded shares exceeded Rs9 billion, indicating continued participation by investors despite market weakness. The latest decline came a day after the stock market ended slightly higher following a volatile session. On Tuesday, the KSE-100 Index had climbed more than 2,000 points during intraday trading before profit-taking erased most of the gains, allowing the market to close with only a modest increase.
