Three Foreign Tourists Die in Separate Southern Thailand Water Incidents

PHANG NGA – Three foreign tourists—a South Korean snorkeler, a British national, and a Russian visitor—have died in separate water-related incidents in southern Thailand over three consecutive days, raising renewed concerns over tourist safety in popular coastal destinations.

Saudi tourist rescued after 5 hours in the sea off the coast of Pattaya

The first incident occurred on the morning of November 28 in Phang Nga’s Similan Islands. South Korean tourist Mr. Lee, 65, lost consciousness while snorkeling near Island No. 9. Despite wearing a life jacket, he was found floating face down by park rangers, who performed CPR and transported him by boat to Ko Miang. He was later taken to Khuk Khak Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 14:56. Doctors noted Mr. Lee had a history of heart disease, and his body was sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a full autopsy. The South Korean Embassy has been contacted to assist his family.

On November 29, 37-year-old British tourist Jason Mark Lambert from Ipswich drowned while swimming off Freedom Beach in Phuket’s Patong area. He had entered the water with his wife around 10:00 before disappearing beneath the surface. Lifeguards pulled him ashore and administered CPR, but he was later pronounced dead at Patong Hospital. Police reported no signs of foul play. Lambert had been staying at a Patong hotel since November 19 with his family.

The following day, on November 30, 69-year-old Russian tourist Sergey drowned off Patong Beach. His companion, Natalia, 47, stated that Sergey swam regularly each morning during their vacation and suggested strong currents or a sudden health issue may have led to the incident. Despite immediate CPR efforts by rescuers, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Patong Hospital.

Naqvi’s remarks backed administrative reforms, s…

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent remarks about Pakistan’s governance system reflected ongoing discussions on improving administrative efficiency through the creation of new provinces or administrative units, according to informed sources. Naqvi made the comments while addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit 2026 on Thursday. During his speech, he described the country’s governance system as “broken” and urged political parties to develop a consensus on the issue of creating new provinces. His remarks triggered widespread debate among political leaders, analysts and journalists, with many questioning the message behind his statement. According to sources familiar with the matter, the minister’s comments should not be viewed as criticism of the federal government or as a sign of differences within the state institutions. Instead, they said the remarks were aimed at highlighting the need for administrative reforms to improve governance and ensure better delivery of public services. Speaking at the summit, Naqvi said the existing governance structure was no longer capable of addressing Pakistan’s growing challenges. He warned that unless major reforms were introduced, the country would continue discussing the same problems even after another 10 years. The interior minister stressed that Pakistan needed a long-term solution rather than temporary measures. He said the issue of creating new administrative units should be placed before the people so that a national consensus could be developed through public debate. Naqvi also referred to the prime minister’s reported long working hours, saying that working 18 to 20 hours a day reflected commitment but could not permanently solve structural governance problems. He said such efforts were similar to dealing with emergencies instead of addressing the root causes of the country’s administrative challenges. His remarks immediately sparked political speculation in Islamabad. Some observers interpreted the statement as an acknowledgment that the current governance model was not delivering the desired results. Others suggested the comments reflected dissatisfaction with the existing administrative structure. Some political analysts also linked the statement to speculation about differences between the civil government and the military establishment. However, informed sources firmly rejected that interpretation. A source with knowledge of the matter said there was no disagreement between Islamabad and Rawalpindi regarding the issue. The source emphasized that Naqvi’s speech was focused solely on promoting the idea of administrative reforms through the establishment of additional administrative units. According to the source, the purpose of the remarks was to encourage discussion among policymakers, political parties and the public about whether Pakistan should adopt a new administrative framework to improve governance across the country. Observers believe supporters of the proposal argue that Pakistan’s existing provincial structure has become too large and complex to effectively manage the country’s administrative and development needs. They maintain that smaller provinces or administrative units could bring government institutions closer to the people, improve service delivery, strengthen local administration and make governance more efficient.

    Students protest Cambridge exam leaks

ISLAMABAD: Accountability4Cambridge has called for a student protest against Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) over alleged examination paper leaks during the 2026 examination cycle, saying the incidents have raised serious concerns about fairness and the credibility of Cambridge examinations. The student group said reports of leaked papers emerged in 2024 and increased in 2025, but Cambridge failed to provide sufficient public explanations or demonstrate that it had effectively strengthened its examination security system. According to Accountability4Cambridge, leaked material from several major papers circulated before scheduled examination times in 2026. The group compiled evidence from 17 alleged cases, including screen recordings showing time-zone information that it says established that the material was available before the relevant examinations. Cambridge recognised four cases and took action, but the students say the remaining evidence was not adequately addressed. The group raised the issue before the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training on May 18 and again on June 16. Following the meetings, a sub-committee comprising IBCC, Cambridge, Accountability4Cambridge, the British Council, the Ministry of Education and NCCIA was formed. During a July 13 meeting, the students presented the 17 recordings and asked Cambridge to respond. After Cambridge questioned the reliability of the videos, Accountability4Cambridge sought forensic verification from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). The group said NCCIA’s report, received on July 29, found no evidence of tampering in the submitted recordings. Accountability4Cambridge subsequently requested another sub-committee meeting to present the forensic findings. The meeting was initially scheduled for August 7 but was postponed to August 12 after Cambridge said it was unavailable. The students have also criticised Cambridge’s decision to use S1 paper marks instead of assessed marks. They argue that using compromised papers for grading could unfairly benefit students who accessed leaked material while disadvantaging those who did not. Accountability4Cambridge is demanding reversal of the S1 marking decision, lower grade thresholds for Computer Science and Mathematics, recognition of additional leaks supported by forensic evidence, publication of a detailed investigation report and a transparent mechanism for handling compromised examinations. The group has also urged schools to demand greater accountability from Cambridge. Founder Samaak Iqbal Malik said the dispute concerns the integrity of the entire examination system rather than a few individual papers. The organisation has announced a student demonstration outside the IBCC office in G-10, Islamabad, at 1pm on Wednesday, August 12, calling for immediate action before the controversy further affects students’ academic futures.

PPP alleges polling irregularities during second p…

ISLAMABAD: The second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections faced fresh controversy on Sunday after the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) alleged delays, administrative shortcomings and electoral irregularities in several constituencies. Meanwhile, the AJK Election Commission postponed polling in one constituency due to severe weather conditions. Polling continued in 21 constituencies, including nine seats in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee constituencies across Pakistan. More than 1.2 million registered voters were eligible to cast their ballots under strict security arrangements. PPP AJK Election Cell In-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor claimed that polling was delayed in several constituencies because polling staff failed to reach polling stations before voting began. He said dozens of polling stations remained without election officials at the scheduled opening time, causing inconvenience to voters and delaying the electoral process. According to the PPP, similar problems were reported in multiple constituencies where polling staff arrived late, preventing voters from exercising their right to vote on time. The party urged the Election Commission and local administration to ensure immediate deployment of staff and restore normal polling. Separately, the AJK Election Commission announced that polling in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-I had been postponed after heavy rainfall and landslides blocked key roads, making it impossible for polling teams and election material to reach several polling stations. Election authorities said efforts were made to reopen the affected routes, but worsening weather conditions prevented polling from taking place. The Commission said a new polling date would be announced later and apologised to voters for the inconvenience. The PPP questioned the decision to postpone polling across the entire constituency. Party leaders argued that if only certain polling stations were affected by landslides, polling should have continued in the remaining accessible areas. They called on the Election Commission to release a detailed report explaining the reasons behind the postponement. The party also alleged delays in additional constituencies, claiming that polling staff had not reached several stations even hours after voting officially began. It maintained that the delays affected voter participation and raised concerns over the smooth conduct of the election. PPP leaders further alleged that blocked roads prevented hundreds of voters from reaching polling stations. The party demanded the immediate reopening of affected routes and called for measures to ensure that voters could cast their ballots without obstruction. In another complaint, the PPP claimed that some of its polling agents were prevented from performing their duties at polling stations despite fulfilling legal requirements. The party urged election authorities to intervene and ensure equal treatment of all contesting candidates and their representatives. The PPP also accused rival political workers of violating election rules in certain constituencies and alleged that government employees were participating in election activities in violation of the code of conduct. The party demanded an immediate investigation and legal action wherever irregularities were confirmed. Separately, PPP leader Nadeem Afzal Chan criticised the conduct of the elections, describing reported delays in ballot paper distribution and administrative issues as unacceptable. He said the party wanted the electoral process to remain transparent and credible and warned that unresolved issues could undermine public confidence.

Zoha Tauqeer criticized for overacting in ‘Kaisa…

Young Pakistani actress Zoha Tauqeer is facing criticism from viewers over her emotional performance in the drama serial Kaisa Yeh Ishq. Tauqeer, who has been building her career in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, first appeared on television through Chocolate Times. She co-hosted the show alongside her mother, television personality Ayesha Jahanzeb. She later became part of Public Demand and gradually moved into acting. (Reviewit.pk) Her acting credits include projects such as Apa Shamim, Chawlbaaz and Zabt. More recently, she has appeared in Zahr-e-Mohabbat and Kaisa Yeh Ishq, where her performances have attracted considerable attention from viewers. However, the response to her latest performance has been mixed. A recent emotional scene from Kaisa Yeh Ishq sparked criticism on social media, with several viewers accusing the actress of overacting. Much of the criticism focuses on her crying and emotional expressions. Some viewers believe that her performance becomes too intense in certain scenes and takes away from the impact of the character’s emotions. Others have questioned whether she is being repeatedly offered similar roles that require prolonged emotional breakdowns. Several social media users also compared her acting style with other popular Pakistani actresses. Some comments described her as an “overactor,” while others joked that she appeared to be following a familiar style seen in emotional television performances. (Reviewit.pk) Another criticism raised by viewers is that Tauqeer appears to be getting typecast. According to some reactions, many of her recent characters revolve around heartbreak, betrayal and crying, leaving little opportunity for her to demonstrate a wider acting range. However, criticism does not necessarily mean that Tauqeer lacks talent. She is still a young performer developing her craft, and Kaisa Yeh Ishq gives her an opportunity to experiment with emotionally demanding material. It is also important to remember that an actor’s performance is shaped by several factors, including the script, direction, editing and the way a scene is written. A highly emotional sequence can sometimes appear exaggerated because of the overall presentation rather than the actor alone. Tauqeer’s journey is particularly interesting because she began in front of the camera as a young co-host before transitioning into acting. Her experience with Chocolate Times and Public Demand gave her an early connection with television audiences before she started taking on dramatic roles. (Reviewit.pk) The current backlash may therefore be another stage in her growth as an actress. As her career develops, taking on more varied characters could help her move beyond the emotional roles that viewers currently associate with her. For now, the discussion surrounding Kaisa Yeh Ishq shows that audiences are paying attention to Zoha Tauqeer. Whether the criticism affects her future choices or encourages her to explore a broader range of performances remains to be seen.
