Abrar Hussain Tanoli honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for Hajj services

RIYADH: Abrar Hussain Tanoli, a Pakistani financial professional based in Saudi Arabia and a native of Mansehra district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been honoured with the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his decade-long services to Pakistani pilgrims and the wider Pakistani community in the Kingdom.

Tanoli was among the Pakistani nationals honoured with the prestigious civil award for outstanding social and community services in Saudi Arabia. The award was presented at a special ceremony organised by the Embassy of Pakistan in Riyadh.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Farooq, presented the award on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari, recognising Tanoli’s sustained contribution to Hajj volunteerism, community welfare, healthcare initiatives and emergency assistance.

Tanoli is a founding member and Riyadh Coordinator of the Pakistan Hajj Volunteers Group (PHVG), an organisation that has been assisting pilgrims during Hajj since 2011. Over the years, he has played a key role in mobilising, coordinating and training Pakistani volunteers from different parts of Saudi Arabia to facilitate pilgrims during the annual pilgrimage.

The volunteers provide assistance to pilgrims in a range of situations, including guiding them to their designated tents, helping wheelchair users, facilitating movement around Hajj facilities and assisting sick and injured pilgrims in performing Tawaaf-e-Ziyarah while receiving treatment at Pakistan Medical Mission facilities.

PHVG works in coordination with the Pakistani Hajj Mission, Embassy of Pakistan and relevant Saudi authorities. In 2024, the organisation mobilised and trained more than 1,500 volunteers to serve pilgrims, with their services also receiving recognition from Saudi authorities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Ahmed Farooq highlighted the demanding nature of the volunteers’ responsibilities during Hajj. He said the volunteers remain engaged around the clock during the five days of Hajj and continue serving pilgrims despite the challenging weather and extreme heat.

He said volunteers assist pilgrims who require medical attention, become separated from their groups or need wheelchairs and other support. Their services, he noted, are not limited to Pakistani pilgrims and are available to anyone who requires assistance.

The ambassador said the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah also facilitates the volunteers by providing information about pilgrims requiring assistance, reflecting the importance attached to their services during Hajj.

“We are very proud of all three of you for the work that you have done and for the good way that you have carried out these services,” Ambassador Farooq said.

For Abrar Tanoli, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz represents recognition not only of his Hajj volunteerism but also of a broader record of community service spanning more than a decade.

Alongside his Hajj-related activities, Tanoli has been involved in organising free medical camps for the Pakistani community in Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the Pakistan Doctors Group and the Embassy of Pakistan. These initiatives have helped provide healthcare services to members of the community, particularly those requiring support.

He is also a founding member of the Al-Bir Group, which provides assistance to Pakistanis facing financial difficulties and other social challenges.

Tanoli’s community welfare activities became particularly significant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through PHVG, he participated in efforts to support Pakistani families stranded or facing difficulties during the crisis. Volunteers helped arrange and distribute food, medicines and other essential supplies to families struggling to meet their basic needs.

His welfare work has also extended to Pakistan, where he continues to support underprivileged families, deserving individuals and communities facing financial hardship.

The recognition has been warmly welcomed by members of the Pakistani community, who described the award as an honour for Tanoli, his family and his native area in Mansehra. Messages of congratulations have highlighted his services to Pakistani pilgrims and the wider community in Saudi Arabia.

The award is also being seen as recognition of the spirit of volunteerism among overseas Pakistanis who devote their time and resources to serving fellow citizens and pilgrims.

Tanoli’s journey reflects a sustained commitment to public service alongside his professional career in the financial sector. From assisting Hajj pilgrims and supporting medical camps to providing emergency relief and helping families facing financial difficulties, his community work has remained an important part of his contribution to Pakistanis in Saudi Arabia and at home.

The Tamgha-e-Imtiaz therefore marks a significant national recognition of Abrar Hussain Tanoli’s long-standing services to pilgrims, community welfare and humanitarian assistance.

PML-N secures AJK majority, says Sanaullah

Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured a simple majority in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly after winning 13 of the 20 seats contested in the first two phases of the elections. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad alongside Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam, Sanaullah said the election process had so far been completed on 20 constituencies. He said polling was first held on 13 seats and later conducted on seven more seats during the second phase. According to Sanaullah, the PML-N won 13 seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured seven seats. He added that the PML-N also emerged victorious on 10 of the 12 refugee seats, taking the party’s total strength in the 45-member AJK Legislative Assembly to 23 seats. He said the party now has the required numbers to form a simple majority government in Azad Kashmir. Sanaullah congratulated PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, party workers and all successful candidates on what he described as a major electoral success. The adviser said the victory reflected the confidence of the people of Azad Kashmir in the policies and leadership of the PML-N. He added that the new government would focus on fulfilling the promises made during the election campaign and would work for the development, prosperity and welfare of the region. Sanaullah rejected allegations of election rigging made by the Pakistan Peoples Party. He maintained that the elections were conducted in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner under the supervision of the Election Commission and relevant state institutions. He alleged that some opposition leaders started questioning the election results only after realising they were losing in several constituencies. He urged political parties to respect the democratic process and avoid making accusations without presenting evidence. Referring to incidents reported during polling, Sanaullah claimed that attempts were made in some areas to create unrest and discourage voter turnout. However, he said the administration, police and security agencies effectively handled the situation and ensured that polling continued smoothly. He also expressed confidence that the PML-N would perform strongly in the remaining phase of the elections. He said the party expects to win more seats when polling is held on the remaining constituencies, further strengthening its position in the legislative assembly. Meanwhile, Federal Minister Amir Muqam described the election outcome as a victory for democracy and the people of Azad Kashmir. He said voters actively participated in the electoral process despite concerns raised before polling and demonstrated their trust in the democratic system. Muqam praised the Election Commission, civil administration, police and security institutions for ensuring peaceful and orderly polling across the region. He said the successful completion of the first two phases reflected effective coordination among all institutions involved in the election process. The minister said the PML-N’s campaign was based on public service, development and good governance. He added that the party leadership remained fully engaged throughout the campaign, while workers reached out to voters across Azad Kashmir to present the party’s vision and manifesto.

PTI founder strong, reads the Quran and its transl…

ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan, the sister of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has said that her brother remains mentally and physically strong despite being in prison. Speaking to the media outside the Islamabad High Court on Thursday, she stated that the PTI founder continues to spend his time reading the Holy Quran along with its translation, describing this as a source of strength and resilience during his incarceration. Aleema Khan also raised concerns about her brother’s health, claiming that he has been experiencing vision problems for several months. According to her, the PTI founder informed his lawyer, Salman Safdar, back in December that he was having difficulty seeing and that there was an issue with one of his eyes. She suggested that despite bringing the matter to the attention of his legal counsel, adequate medical attention had not been provided. Speaking further about his conditions in custody, Aleema Khan alleged that the PTI founder’s access to reading material has been restricted. She claimed that prison authorities had confiscated his books, preventing him from continuing his regular reading routine. According to her, books have always been an important part of his daily life, and taking them away has made his time in prison more difficult. Despite these alleged restrictions, Aleema Khan insisted that the PTI founder has remained determined and steadfast. She said he continues to focus on reading the Quran and reflecting on its translation whenever possible, adding that his faith has helped him maintain a positive outlook while facing the challenges of imprisonment. Her remarks came as PTI leaders, supporters, and lawyers gathered outside the Islamabad High Court, where they continued to call for legal relief for the former prime minister. The media interaction attracted significant attention as party members expressed concern over the PTI founder’s health and prison conditions. Aleema Khan’s comments are the latest in a series of statements from the PTI leadership regarding the treatment of the party founder during his detention. Party officials have repeatedly voiced concerns about his medical care, access to books, and overall prison environment. They have urged the authorities to ensure that he receives appropriate healthcare and is granted facilities in accordance with prison regulations. The government and prison authorities have previously rejected or disputed several allegations made by PTI leaders regarding the former prime minister’s treatment in custody. However, the issue continues to remain a point of political debate, with PTI maintaining that its founder’s legal rights and well-being should be protected. As legal proceedings continue, Aleema Khan reiterated that her brother remains firm in his resolve. She concluded by saying that, despite the challenges he faces in prison, he remains spiritually strong through his regular recitation of the Holy Quran and reading of its translation.

Oil prices rise more than $2 amid falling US inven…

Global crude oil prices climbed by more than $2 per barrel in the latest trading session, as a decline in US crude inventories boosted market sentiment and supported prices. According to Reuters, the rise came after traders responded to signs of tighter oil supplies in the United States. A drop in crude stockpiles often signals stronger demand or reduced availability, which can encourage investors to push prices higher. Oil prices had fallen in the previous session after tensions between Washington and Tehran showed signs of easing temporarily. However, the market regained momentum in the latest session as supply concerns returned to focus. Brent crude futures gained $2.71, or 3.2%, to reach $86.80 per barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose $2.26, or 3.4%, to trade at $81.95 per barrel. Market participants continue to closely monitor developments in the Middle East, particularly any changes in US-Iran relations, as well as global supply conditions. Any renewed tensions in the region could further affect oil markets because of the Middle East’s importance to global energy supplies. Analysts also expect traders to keep an eye on upcoming inventory data and broader demand trends. A combination of falling stockpiles, geopolitical uncertainty and concerns over supply could continue to create volatility in international oil prices in the coming sessions.

Mohsin Naqvi calls for autonomous, modern Interior…

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the Ministry of Interior’s affiliated institutions to become more autonomous, empowered and capable of making decisions independently rather than referring every matter to the ministry. He made the remarks while chairing a meeting of heads of all subordinate departments and institutions of the Ministry of Interior. The meeting reviewed the performance of various institutions, ongoing reforms and measures to improve coordination and communication among them. Naqvi stressed that institutions should take timely decisions within their respective mandates. He also instructed officials to immediately propose necessary legal amendments and administrative reforms wherever existing laws or procedures create obstacles to effective functioning. The interior minister said the Ministry of Interior deals with matters that are different and more sensitive than those handled by many other ministries. He assured participants that the government would provide full support to newly established institutions, including the Land Port Authority, and ensure that all departments receive the resources they need. He called for stronger cooperation among the ministry’s institutions and directed their heads to adopt comprehensive measures to strengthen data protection and cybersecurity. He said modernising the institutions and bringing them in line with contemporary requirements remained a key priority. Naqvi also asked the heads of all affiliated institutions to submit comprehensive two-year transformation plans for their respective organisations. He said the government aims to transform every institution under the Ministry of Interior along modern lines and improve its overall efficiency. “The goal is to make every institution under the Ministry of Interior exemplary and public-friendly,” Naqvi said, stressing the need to set clear targets and ensure their timely achievement to provide citizens with better facilities and quality services. The minister also highlighted the performance of the ministry’s institutions during the Hajj operation, noting that the absence of any reported drug-smuggling case during the operation reflected improved performance and stronger enforcement measures. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry also addressed the meeting and said a culture of poor performance had previously existed in federal institutions. He said the government had taken steps to change that mindset and was now focusing on target-based, result-oriented and performance-driven work. Chaudhry stressed that all institutions must focus on measurable outcomes, improve efficiency and work collectively to deliver better services to the public.
