Suicide bombing at Kabal Police Station kills 14, injures 20 in Swat

SWAT: At least 14 people, including five police personnel and nine civilians, were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide bombing at the main gate of Kabal Police Station in Swat district on Sunday.

According to Malakand Regional Police Officer (RPO) Syed Fida Hassan Shah, the attacker attempted to enter the police compound but was intercepted by security personnel stationed at the entrance. Prevented from gaining access, the suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at the main gate.

Police said the 20 injured include 14 police personnel and six civilians. The wounded were shifted to nearby hospitals, where several are reported to be in critical condition.

The RPO said the police compound houses Kabal Police Station, Kabal Police Lines, a public facilitation center, and several other government offices. He noted that the casualties could have been significantly higher had the attacker succeeded in entering the compound.
Following the blast, police and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and launched a search operation, while investigators began collecting forensic evidence from the scene.

Police officials said the severed head of the suspected suicide bomber has been recovered, and investigators are working to establish his identity and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Local sources said a public demonstration calling for peace was underway at nearby Kabal Chowk when the explosion occurred. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the protest was linked to or affected by the attack.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

An emergency has been declared at the Saidu Group of Teaching Hospitals following the suicide blast in Kabal, Swat. All doctors, nursing staff, and paramedics have been placed on high alert to ensure the timely treatment of those injured in the attack. Hospital authorities said every effort is being made to provide the best possible medical care to the victims. Medical Superintendent Dr. Muhammad Saleem Khan, along with other senior officials, is personally overseeing the emergency response and monitoring the situation.

The Saidu Hospital administration has appealed to the public to donate blood to help meet the urgent needs of the injured. Citizens have also been requested to avoid unnecessary visits to the hospital during the emergency to prevent overcrowding and allow medical teams to carry out their work efficiently.

Hospital officials said the situation is being closely monitored, and emergency medical services remain fully operational.

    199 polling stations set for LA-17 election

    BAGH: A total of 199 polling stations have been established for the election in LA-17 Bagh-4 Haveli, with 10 security personnel to be deployed at each polling station. According to a notification issued by the Returning Officer’s office, 117,514 registered voters will be eligible to cast their ballots in the constituency. Polling will take place across 12 union councils and a town committee. Election officials have also completed arrangements for transporting election materials to remote areas, including Bheedi, Halla and Kairni. Haveli has been divided into 16 sectors to facilitate the distribution of election materials and manage polling arrangements. Of the 199 polling stations, 50 have been classified as sensitive and 25 as highly sensitive. Ten security personnel will be deployed at every polling station to maintain security during polling. Preparations have also been completed for the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, with polling scheduled in four constituencies across Bagh and Haveli districts of the Poonch Division. The transportation of election materials to polling stations is currently underway. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhanoti have been postponed. The upcoming electoral contest also features three former prime ministers among the candidates. Former AJK prime ministers Sardar Attique Khan and Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, who lead the Muslim Conference and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party respectively, are contesting the elections. AJK Prime Minister Faisal Rathore is also taking part in the electoral contest. Authorities have stepped up security and logistical preparations ahead of polling to ensure a peaceful voting process across the constituency.

The Grammy-winning singer has filed a lawsuit against unidentified individuals, accusing them of orchestrating a years-long hacking campaign that targeted people within her professional circle and resulted in the release of confidential content never meant for the public.  According to court documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 27, Grande’s lawsuit names John Doe 1 and John Does 2 through 100 as defendants. The singer alleges that the individuals illegally accessed digital accounts belonging to photographers, producers and other close collaborators through phishing schemes and other hacking methods. The complaint claims the hackers stole unreleased songs, photographs, videos and audio recordings documenting Grande’s creative process.  Grande’s legal team argues that the stolen files were never intended for public release and that some of the material was sold on the dark web for significant amounts of money. The lawsuit further claims that 45 unreleased songs were leaked in 2023 alone and that hundreds of similar leaks have affected the singer since the beginning of her music career in 2011. According to the complaint, the repeated breaches have caused “substantial and irreparable harm” to both her career and her personal privacy.  The singer is not only seeking damages but is also asking the court to help identify the anonymous individuals behind the alleged cyberattacks. By obtaining subpoenas, her legal team hopes to trace the hackers’ digital footprints and hold them accountable for what the lawsuit describes as an unlawful invasion of privacy and intellectual property theft.  A source close to Grande told People that the legal action goes beyond her personal case. The source said the lawsuit is intended to protect artists’ rights and discourage future attacks on musicians and other creators. “Artists deserve the right to control how and when their art is shared with the world,” the source said, emphasizing that unauthorized leaks undermine the creative process.  Grande has previously spoken out against music leaks. In a 2024 interview, she warned those responsible for leaking her unreleased song “Fantasize” that there would be consequences, famously saying, “I’ll see you in jail, literally.” Her latest lawsuit demonstrates that she is now following through on that warning.  As the legal battle unfolds, Grande’s case highlights the growing challenges artists face in protecting their work in the digital age. The outcome could have wider implications for how the entertainment industry combats cybercrime, safeguards unreleased content and defends creators’ rights in an increasingly connected world.

    Islamabad: A controversy over a motorway incident involving a couple’s video and growing concerns over delayed road projects dominated the Senate Standing Committee on Communications meeting, where lawmakers questioned the role of motorway police and raised serious concerns over incomplete highways due to funding problems. The committee was informed that the motorway police officer involved in the incident had been suspended and an inquiry was underway after officials clarified that moral policing is not part of the department’s official duties. Inspector General Motorway Police told the committee that the incident took place on 16 July when motorway police found a vehicle parked on the roadside. He said an argument developed when the vehicle moved away. The IG informed lawmakers that stopping people for moral reasons is not included in the motorway police’s standard operating procedures. He assured the committee that action had been taken against the officer involved and the inquiry would be completed soon. The Senate Standing Committee on Communications, chaired by Senator Pervaiz Rashid, also reviewed major road development issues and questioned delays in important infrastructure projects. During the meeting, lawmakers raised concerns over the incomplete Kuchlak to Zhob N50 Highway project, which covers around 298 kilometres. Officials informed the committee that the project remains unfinished because of a shortage of funds. Senator Zameer Hussain Ghumro questioned why new development plans are considered when existing projects are still waiting for completion. The Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Communications informed the committee that no new projects had been started during the current year. The committee stressed that incomplete projects increase public difficulties and may also increase costs because delays often create additional financial pressure. Members discussed improving the National Highway Authority’s funding system so road projects can continue without stopping due to delayed payments. The committee recommended that project funds should be released every three months to ensure contractors receive payments on time and construction work continues smoothly. Officials also discussed creating a bridge financial system to prevent road projects from being affected by temporary funding shortages. The committee was briefed about financial matters related to development loans and agreed that funding mechanisms should be discussed separately to create better policies for future projects. Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir also raised concerns about the distribution of development funds and pointed out differences in allocation for road projects. He said that out of Rs116 billion approved for Balochistan, around Rs100 billion was allocated for the N25 Highway project. The committee said better planning was needed to ensure development funds are distributed effectively and important routes receive timely attention. Several questions related to road projects in Chitral and Balochistan, including CPEC related highways and the Karachi Bela Road, could not be discussed because the members who had submitted the questions were not present.

Additional Director-General for Immigration Nouman Siddiqui stated that AI-assisted profiling targets high-risk travel patterns, such as first-time visitors travelling to countries like Senegal, Malawi, or Cyprus with no clear family or employment ties, and that phone inspections occur only in select cases linked to smuggling networks. The FIA cited thousands of recent instances where citizens failed to return from visit visas, emphasizing that proactive measures are necessary to protect genuine travellers and prevent international reputational damage. However, legal experts warn that the agency is exceeding its authority. Immigration lawyer Umar Gilani noted that while officers can inspect travel documents, compelling passengers to unlock smartphones constitutes search and seizure, which legally requires a formal criminal investigation. Gilani argued that forcing access to personal devices violates the right to privacy under Article 14 of Pakistan’s constitution, calling for an independent immigration tribunal to oversee official decisions and safeguard fundamental rights.

    Tarar proposes mentors for young actors

    Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has proposed launching a mentorship programme for young actors following the controversy surrounding the alleged disrespectful treatment of veteran actor Mohammed Ahmed by fellow actor Fahad Sheikh. In a statement shared on X, Tarar described the reported incident as “highly deplorable” and said respect for senior artists must remain a core value of Pakistan’s entertainment industry. The minister said the proposed initiative would allow emerging actors to learn professional ethics, discipline and acting skills from experienced performers. He suggested that Mohammed Ahmed, given his decades-long contribution to television, would be well suited to lead the programme, or that a council of senior actors could oversee the initiative. Tarar also announced that he would soon convene a meeting of television artists and industry stakeholders to seek recommendations on establishing the mentorship programme. The controversy began after Mohammed Ahmed, during a recent podcast interview, recalled being mocked and humiliated by a younger lead actor while working on a television production. He described incidents in which the actor allegedly ridiculed him in front of colleagues and behaved disrespectfully during filming. Although Ahmed did not initially identify the individual, videos circulating on social media later linked actor Fahad Sheikh to the allegations. Responding to the criticism, Sheikh issued a public apology, saying that incomplete accounts of the incident had created a misleading narrative. He maintained that he had already apologised to Mohammed Ahmed privately before the issue gained widespread attention online. Sheikh also offered another public apology, acknowledging Mohammed Ahmed’s seniority and expressing hope that the veteran actor would accept his apology. He insisted that he had never intended to insult a senior colleague.
