The address marked a significant milestone in Pakistan Navy’s engagement with the global strategic community and underscored its expanding role in international maritime security discourse.

During his visit, organised in coordination with the Pakistan High Commission in London, Admiral Ashraf held a series of high-level meetings with senior officials of the Royal Navy, the UK Ministry of Defence, NATO Allied Maritime Command, and the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS). Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral naval cooperation, professional exchanges and regional security.

The Naval Chief also met representatives of the Lloyd’s Market Association and the Joint War Committee, where discussions centred on maritime insurance, security risks in the Indian Ocean and the protection of global shipping routes.

As part of his engagements, Admiral Ashraf attended the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford, Europe’s largest military air show, where he interacted with senior military leaders from allied nations and representatives of the British defence industry.

He also visited the Pakistan High Commission in London and met High Commission officials to discuss ways of expanding Pakistan-UK cooperation in defence, maritime affairs and strategic engagement. He later recorded his remarks in the High Commission’s guest book.

Southern and central China prepare for floods as Typhoon Noul moves inland

The remnants of Typhoon Noul continued to move deeper into China on Tuesday, raising concerns over widespread flooding across several southern and central provinces. Although the storm has weakened since making landfall, weather experts warned that it could remain over inland areas longer than expected, increasing the threat of heavy rain and related disasters. China’s National Meteorological Center said intense rainfall is expected to continue until Thursday across Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Henan and Guangxi. The downpours are being strengthened by the southern monsoon, creating conditions that could trigger floods, landslides and other emergencies in many parts of the country. Officials are particularly concerned because the storm is moving north through mountainous regions where heavy rain can quickly destabilize slopes and send large amounts of water rushing into rivers and towns. State media warned that the combination of steep terrain and prolonged rainfall could increase the risk of landslides, mudslides and flash floods before the storm eventually weakens. Typhoon Noul rapidly gained strength before striking Guangdong province over the weekend. According to state broadcaster CCTV, it was the strongest typhoon to hit China so far this year. Even though the storm has now lost much of its original power, authorities believe the danger is far from over because its remaining rain bands continue to bring significant rainfall over a wide area. The Chinese government has stepped up emergency preparations as the country faces the overlap of typhoon season and its annual flood season. Emergency management and housing authorities have instructed local governments to strengthen flood prevention efforts, inspect roads, bridges, reservoirs and other important infrastructure, and move rescue teams and emergency supplies into areas considered most vulnerable. Officials have also ordered safety inspections at industries that could face additional risks during severe weather, including mining operations and factories dealing with hazardous chemicals and fireworks. China experiences most of its typhoons between July and September, with August usually being the busiest period. Every year, powerful storms threaten coastal provinces before moving inland, where they often bring days of heavy rainfall that can cause serious damage far from the coastline. Other parts of the country are also facing weather related challenges. Provinces including Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan have been placed on high alert after repeated periods of heavy rain increased the likelihood of geological disasters. In Gansu, authorities issued their highest level warning for landslides and mudslides late Monday after rocks and large boulders fell from mountain slopes onto roads in several areas, creating dangerous conditions for residents and travelers. Meanwhile, rescue efforts are continuing in Chongqing following a deadly mountain collapse earlier this month. On July 17, part of a mountainside gave way and crashed onto buildings in a riverside township. Search teams are still looking for around 50 people who remain missing as authorities continue recovery operations in the affected area. The latest severe weather is expected to make those efforts even more challenging while increasing the risk of further disasters in already vulnerable regions.

Harry Potter fans save Dobby’s grave from power cable

Harry Potter fans have successfully pushed for a major power infrastructure project in Wales to be moved away from the memorial site known as Dobby’s grave. The $581 million Greenlink interconnector is being developed to connect the electricity networks of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The project aims to help both countries share surplus renewable energy. The original route of the underground cable was planned to pass close to the memorial for Dobby, the beloved house elf from the Harry Potter series. The memorial is located on a beach in Pembrokeshire. It became a popular destination for fans after the area was used to film Dobby’s death scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Fans regularly visit the site to pay tribute to the fictional character. Many leave stones with personal messages and tributes. Socks were also commonly left at the memorial, reflecting Dobby’s connection with the item in the Harry Potter story, but environmental authorities have asked visitors to stop leaving them. The proposed power cable route triggered a strong reaction among Harry Potter fans. Project manager Simon Ludlam said his team received hundreds of calls after details of the planned route became known. Ludlam initially did not understand why the location had caused such concern. He said a colleague eventually explained the significance of the site and the emotional attachment fans had developed to Dobby’s grave. Following discussions, the project team decided to alter the planned route. Ludlam said engineers worked on a new alignment to ensure that the cable would not pass close to the memorial. The revised route has now allowed the project to proceed without directly affecting the popular tourist site. However, the new alignment has raised another issue. It passes relatively close to a potential Bronze Age burial site. Planning documents from local authorities had identified archaeological remains in the area. An archaeological investigation reportedly found the remains of an inverted pottery vessel believed to resemble a Bronze Age collared urn. The vessel has been dated to approximately 1700 to 1500 BC. Such urns are commonly associated with burial sites and may indicate the presence of human remains. The situation has highlighted the challenge of balancing major infrastructure projects with cultural, historical and tourism interests. Local residents have also welcomed the decision to protect the Dobby memorial. The site attracts visitors from across the world and has become an important tourism attraction in Pembrokeshire. Local resident Jack Nicholas said visitors had travelled from countries including Italy, Australia and South Africa to see the memorial. He said the attraction brings tourists to one of Pembrokeshire’s notable beaches and helps nearby businesses. Tourism is a major part of the local economy. Pembrokeshire County Council estimates that the sector contributes around $815 million to the economy and supports about 23% of local employment.

Balochistan attack: sessions judge Abdul Hakeem Ka…

District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hakeem Kakar and his security guard were killed in an armed attack while traveling toward Mastung from Quetta, officials confirmed on Thursday. According to officials, Judge Kakar was traveling with Additional Sessions Judge Tariq Lashari when unidentified armed men targeted their vehicles near Wali Khan crossing. The attack resulted in the deaths of Judge Kakar and his guard, while Judge Lashari and another person sustained injuries. Balochistan Home Department officials said the injured victims were shifted to a hospital in Mastung for medical treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack and are collecting evidence from the crime scene. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti took notice of the incident and directed authorities to investigate all aspects of the attack. Officials said strict action would be taken if any negligence was found during security arrangements. The provincial government described the attack as a targeted assault against the judicial community. Officials said such incidents were aimed at creating fear and challenging the authority of state institutions. President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack and expressed grief over the deaths of the judge and his guard. He said the sacrifices of those killed in such attacks would not go in vain and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fighting terrorism. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also condemned the incident, saying such acts could not weaken the nation’s determination against terrorism. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. The attack comes amid heightened security concerns in Balochistan, where several violent incidents have recently taken place. Just a day earlier, three people were killed and several others injured in an attack on a passenger bus in Mastung, while a bridge on the national highway was damaged in a separate incident. Security forces have intensified operations across the province following a rise in militant activities. Authorities say counterterrorism efforts are continuing to restore peace and prevent further attacks. The investigation into the killing of Judge Abdul Hakeem Kakar and his guard remains ongoing, with security agencies working to identify and arrest those responsible.

The offer is available from August 1 to October 31, 2026, during a pilot programme that will cover up to 20,000 eligible travellers. To qualify, Indian passport holders must book a travel package from India to Abu Dhabi.
