Pakistan raises suspension of Indus Waters Treaty at ASEAN regional forum

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has raised concerns over India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty at an international platform, describing New Delhi’s actions as a provocative move that directly threatens regional stability.

Addressing the 33rd ASEAN Regional Forum Ministerial Meeting in Manila, Dar emphasized that resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains central to achieving lasting peace in South Asia.

He warned that any arbitrary or unilateral measures altering the 1960 water-sharing framework risk jeopardising the livelihoods and fundamental interests of 250 million Pakistanis.

Stressing the necessity of diplomacy, Dar urged all regional stakeholders to exercise restraint and resolve outstanding bilateral disputes through constructive dialogue. He also reiterated that regional peace depends on preventing external platforms from being exploited, noting specifically that Afghan territory must not be utilised to facilitate cross-border terrorism against Pakistan.

The two countries maintain strong political, economic and defence ties, while Saudi Arabia has remained one of Pakistan’s key allies and economic partners. Officials said the federal cabinet meeting will be rescheduled after the prime minister returns from Saudi Arabia. A new date for the meeting is expected to be announced in due course.

    Lodhran: A friendship that began on social media turned into love, bringing a Filipino woman to Lodhran to meet the man she loved. A Filipino woman, Rose Marie, embraced Islam before marrying a middle-aged man, Amir Matam, and adopted the Islamic name Kaniz Mai. However, after the marriage, she allegedly became a victim of domestic violence, while her husband also extorted millions of rupees from her. Acting on the instructions of DPO Lodhran Captain (Retd.) Ali Bin Tariq, a police team led by DSP Sadar Circle Lodhran Abid Hussain Bhulla carried out a swift operation, rescued the woman, and recovered her cash and belongings. Speaking to the media, DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla said that around two years ago, Rose Marie established contact with Amir Matam, a welder from Lodhran, through social media. Their friendship gradually developed into a love relationship, after which Amir Matam persuaded her to travel to Pakistan for marriage. The Filipino woman came to Lodhran, married Amir Matam, and began living with him. He said that serious disputes had developed between the couple in recent months, leaving the foreign woman feeling unsafe. According to the DSP, Rose Marie informed a Malaysian friend living in Islamabad about her situation. The Malaysian woman then contacted Police Helpline 15 seeking immediate assistance for her friend. DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla said that due to the high-profile nature of the call, DPO Lodhran Captain (Retd.) Ali Bin Tariq was immediately informed, who promptly constituted a police team under his supervision to respond to the situation. He added that the police not only rescued their foreign sister but also recovered her belongings and Rs. 1.5 million in cash, which had allegedly been misappropriated by her husband, Amir Matam. The recovered cash and belongings were returned to the woman, while she was provided with secure accommodation and police protection. DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla emphasized that the protection of the lives, property, and dignity of foreigners whether residents or tourists is among the highest priorities of the State of Pakistan and the police. Concluding his statement, the DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla said that the police response in high-profile cases is equally prompt and professional. He added that Lodhran Police resolved all matters concerning the foreign woman in accordance with her wishes. She is now expected to return to her home country, the Philippines, while the accused, who is currently on bail, will face legal proceedings in accordance with the law.

    ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has said Pakistan’s solar energy capacity has reached 38,000 megawatts (MW), highlighting the country’s growing shift toward renewable energy and its commitment to reducing dependence on imported fuels. Speaking at the Battery Storage Flexibility 2026 Conference, the minister said the government aims to increase the share of clean energy in Pakistan’s electricity mix to 90% by 2035. He said expanding renewable energy and developing battery storage solutions are key to strengthening the country’s energy security and lowering the import bill for conventional fuels. Leghari said the government is promoting the development of a local battery energy storage industry, encouraging domestic engineering, system integration and battery management software. He added that the Ministry of Industries is finalizing a national policy to support local battery manufacturing. The minister announced that the government is also preparing a National Battery Energy Storage Framework, which will include safety standards, grid connection guidelines and investment regulations to support the growth of the sector. According to Leghari, clean energy now accounts for 55% of Pakistan’s total electricity generation, reflecting significant progress in the country’s transition toward sustainable energy sources. He said a National Steering Committee for Battery Energy Storage Systems has already been established, while technical and regulatory working groups have also been formed to guide policy development and implementation. Leghari further revealed that pilot battery energy storage projects have been approved for electricity distribution companies. The data collected from these projects will help shape future regulatory policies and improve the country’s energy planning. The minister said Pakistan has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing distributed energy markets and assured investors that the government will provide a clear, transparent and long-term regulatory framework to encourage investment.

    Powerful 7.7 quake kills 20 in Indonesia

    At least 20 people have been killed after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Flores Island early Saturday, triggering widespread panic, building damage and a series of strong aftershocks. The strongest aftershocks included a 6.1-magnitude tremor, forcing residents to remain outdoors because of fears that weakened structures could collapse. Dramatic scenes were reported at the port of Maumere, where sections of a terminal building broke apart during the earthquake. A gangway leading to a ferry also collapsed, sending some passengers into the sea as people attempted to escape. East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said some victims were killed while sleeping after rubble from collapsing structures fell on them. Residents described the earthquake as extremely frightening. People rushed out of their homes and moved towards safer areas, with many heading to higher ground after authorities issued a tsunami warning. The tsunami alert was later lifted about three hours after the earthquake when no significant rise in sea levels was detected. Authorities said around 2,000 people evacuated or moved to safer locations on their own during the warning. Officials reported fatalities in several provinces, including Sikka, Manggarai and East Manggarai. At least two people were seriously injured while 11 others suffered minor injuries. The earthquake also caused extensive structural damage. Initial assessments indicated that dozens of houses had been severely damaged along with healthcare facilities, places of worship, government buildings, an educational institution and a warehouse. Manggarai was identified as one of the worst-affected areas. Rescue and assessment teams are continuing to work in the region, although difficult mountainous terrain could make operations challenging. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm, avoid coastal areas and stay away from buildings that have been damaged or weakened by the earthquake and aftershocks.
