Foreign nationals seek asylum in Canada following world cup

A total of 175 foreign visitors who travelled to Canada during the FIFA World Cup have formally requested asylum, triggering legal reviews under the country’s refugee protection laws.

Canada issued approximately 26,000 visas for the tournament, which saw 13 matches staged across Toronto and Vancouver. While thousands of football fans globally applied for visitor visas to attend the fixtures, strict screening measures resulted in over 50 per cent of those applications being rejected.

Immigration officials have not disclosed whether any athletes or team members are among the claimants. However, initial breakdown data indicates that 25 applicants are citizens of Ghana, while Egypt and Colombia account for 15 claims each, with total figures expected to climb further.

Canadian authorities had issued warnings prior to the tournament clarifying that temporary visas obtained for the World Cup would not serve as an avenue to bypass immigration standards, remain beyond authorised stays or claim political asylum.

Congo Ebola outbreak surpasses 1,000 deaths at record pace

Data from the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reveals that the ongoing Ebola outbreak declared on 15 May has killed over 1,000 people in just over two months. This marks the fastest-spreading outbreak of the virus on record, reaching 1,000 fatalities nearly three times quicker than the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic. As of Tuesday, the country has recorded 2,536 confirmed cases and 1,033 deaths, with the case fatality rate standing at 40 per cent. Unlike the 2014–2016 epidemic driven by the more common Ebola virus, the current surge is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or targeted therapeutic treatments. The outbreak remains largely concentrated across five eastern provinces near the Ugandan border. Health officials warn that the peak may still lie ahead due to late patient presentations, initial delays in identifying the strain, and a high proportion of new cases emerging outside monitored contact lists.

Government assures uninterrupted fuel supply amid …

Sources in Pakistan’s Petroleum Division have stated that the government is committed to ensuring the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country. The assurance comes amid ongoing discussions with representatives of the Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association regarding fuel pricing and dealers’ profit margins. According to official sources, the government is working to determine petroleum product prices through a transparent and fair mechanism. Officials emphasized that the Ministry of Petroleum remains open to hearing constructive and practical suggestions from all stakeholders involved in the petroleum sector. They stressed that maintaining transparency in the pricing process is a key priority and that the government welcomes proposals that can contribute to a balanced and sustainable policy. Sources further revealed that the Federal Minister for Petroleum held a meeting with office-bearers of the Petrol Pump Owners Association, during which he listened carefully to their concerns and demands. The minister reportedly gave the representatives ample time to present their viewpoints and assured them that the government was willing to consider reasonable proposals in the interest of both consumers and fuel dealers. However, according to Petroleum Division sources, the discussions failed to produce the desired outcome because representatives of the association allegedly adopted an uncompromising approach during the meeting. Officials claimed that the association’s leadership insisted on having its demands accepted without presenting convincing arguments or practical justification. The sources stated that despite the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue, the association remained firm on its position and showed little flexibility in the negotiations. The Petroleum Division also said that the representatives of the Petrol Pump Owners Association eventually walked out of the meeting on their own before the discussions had been concluded. Officials maintained that the government had not ended the talks and was still prepared to continue negotiations in order to resolve outstanding issues through mutual understanding. According to the sources, the Petroleum Minister has already assured petrol pump dealers that the government is prepared to review their profit margins. The minister acknowledged that the concerns of fuel retailers deserve careful consideration and indicated that the issue of dealer commissions would be examined as part of the ongoing consultation process. Government officials reiterated that while they are open to discussions with all stakeholders, any decision regarding fuel prices or dealer margins must be made in the broader public interest. They emphasized that ensuring a stable supply of petroleum products remains the government’s top priority and that consumers should not face unnecessary disruptions because of disagreements between authorities and industry representatives. The Petroleum Division further noted that transparent policymaking requires consultation with all parties, including oil marketing companies, petrol pump owners, and other industry stakeholders. Officials expressed hope that future meetings would take place in a more constructive atmosphere and lead to a mutually acceptable solution. The ongoing discussions come at a time when petroleum prices remain a matter of significant public concern due to their impact on transportation costs, inflation, and the overall economy. Fuel dealers have repeatedly called for higher profit margins, arguing that rising operational costs have made it increasingly difficult to run their businesses profitably. Despite the differences that emerged during the latest meeting, government sources insisted that dialogue remains the preferred way forward. They reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining an uninterrupted fuel supply, ensuring transparency in the pricing mechanism, and continuing consultations with petrol pump owners until an acceptable solution is reached that protects both consumers and businesses.

World’s tallest bridge features 300-meter artificial waterfall

China has completed several remarkable engineering projects in recent years but the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge stands out as one of the most extraordinary. Often described as an engineering marvel, the bridge is not for the faint-hearted. Anyone with a fear of heights may find crossing it a nerve-racking experience. The bridge is situated 625 meters (2,051 feet) above the ground and was opened to the public in September 2025 making it the world’s tallest bridge. However, its height is not the only feature that makes it unique. The bridge also includes a spectacular artificial waterfall making it a major tourist attraction rather than just a transportation route. Chinese authorities designed the bridge as both an infrastructure project and a tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy glass walkways, cafes inside the bridge towers and adventure activities such as bungee jumping. The bridge’s most eye-catching attraction is its 300-meter-long artificial waterfall which creates a dramatic curtain of water. A laser lighting system has also been installed allowing the waterfall to put on a dazzling display at night. According to local authorities, thousands of tourists visit the site every day. The bridge gained further recognition when Time magazine ranked it as the No. 1 destination in its list of the World’s Greatest Places for 2026. Located in Guizhou Province in southwestern China, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was primarily built to reduce travel time across the mountainous region. Guizhou’s rugged terrain previously made travel between many locations slow and difficult. Thanks to the new bridge, a journey that once took two hours can now be completed in about one minute. Constructed from 20,000 tons of steel roughly equivalent to the amount used in three Eiffel Towers, the bridge stretches 9,482 feet (about 2,890 meters) in length. Construction began in January 2022 and the bridge officially opened to the public in September 2025.

Travis Barker reveals what led to his divorce from…

Travis Barker has opened up about his brief first marriage to Melissa Kennedy, offering a glimpse into the personal choices that contributed to their relationship ending. The Blink-182 drummer married Kennedy in 2001, but their marriage lasted only about nine months before he filed for divorce in August 2002. (Wikipedia) While little is publicly known about Kennedy or the couple’s relationship, Barker has discussed the marriage in his 2015 memoir, Can I Say. His comments suggest that he entered married life while still struggling with a strong desire for attention from other women. Barker acknowledged that he was “constantly looking for other girls” even before marrying Kennedy. He also admitted that his behavior extended to his bachelor party, when he was still thinking about other women despite preparing to get married. (HELLO!) Those revelations provide important context for the short-lived relationship. Although Barker has not publicly described one specific incident as the official reason for their divorce, his own reflections point to his behavior and mindset at the time as major factors in the marriage’s failure. The timing of the split also came during a major period in Barker’s career. Blink-182 was enjoying enormous success after the release of its 2001 album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, while Barker was becoming increasingly recognized as one of the band’s standout members. His professional life was moving quickly, and his personal life was changing just as rapidly. Barker and Kennedy officially went their separate ways in August 2002. The drummer later moved on with actress and model Shanna Moakler, whom he married in 2004. Their relationship became much more public through MTV’s Meet the Barkers, and the couple welcomed two children together. (Wikipedia) Looking back, Barker’s comments about Kennedy show how different his life and relationships were in his younger years. His memoir did not simply revisit the end of the marriage; it also acknowledged some of his own mistakes. Today, Barker is married to Kourtney Kardashian Barker. The couple, who married in 2022, have spoken openly about communication and accountability as important parts of maintaining their relationship. (People.com) His reflections on his first marriage therefore offer a rare look at the musician’s past and the lessons he appears to have carried into his later relationships.

Air India pilot undergoes confirmatory drug test after turbulence incident injures 17

India’s aviation authorities have launched an investigation after an Air India flight experienced severe turbulence that injured 17 passengers and crew members, with the pilot now undergoing additional testing following an initial screening result. The incident occurred on August 4 when an Air India Airbus A320 was travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi. The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when it suddenly lost approximately 300 feet, or 91 metres, in altitude before recovering and continuing its journey safely. After the aircraft landed in the Indian capital, eight passengers and four cabin crew members were taken to hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities said their conditions were stable. Following the incident, both pilots underwent routine screening for psychoactive substances, as required under aviation safety procedures. According to India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, the initial screening involving the pilot-in-command produced a result that required further examination. The ministry said the pilot’s sample has been sent to an authorised laboratory for confirmatory analysis. Officials are now waiting for the final laboratory report before deciding whether any further action is necessary. The aviation ministry has classified the incident as a “Serious Incident”, prompting India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to begin a formal investigation into what happened aboard the aircraft. Both pilots have also been temporarily removed from flight duties while the investigation and confirmatory testing are underway. Authorities said any additional measures will depend on the findings of the investigation and the results of the laboratory analysis. Footage shared after the incident showed signs of the turbulence inside the aircraft, including cabin baggage scattered along the aisle. Some injured passengers were reportedly carried from the aircraft on stretchers after landing. Air India separately confirmed that its pilots had undergone post-flight screening following the incident. However, the airline said the results of those tests had not been provided to the company. The incident represents another challenge for Air India as the carrier continues a major transformation under the ownership of India’s Tata Group. Since acquiring control of the airline in 2022, Tata has undertaken an extensive modernisation programme, including placing large aircraft orders and working to upgrade Air India’s ageing fleet and operations. The airline has made progress in integrating its aviation businesses and improving its services, but it continues to face several difficulties. These include delays in aircraft deliveries and disruptions caused by airspace closures linked to the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. Air India has also been attempting to rebuild public confidence following a far more devastating accident in June 2025. Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner travelling to London, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The accident killed all but one of the 242 people aboard the aircraft, while 19 people on the ground also lost their lives. As the airline works to recover from recent setbacks, it has appointed aviation industry veteran Tewolde Gebremariam, the former chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, as its new CEO. He is expected to play a key role in the company’s efforts to strengthen operations, restore confidence and lead its broader turnaround strategy. The latest turbulence incident will now be closely examined by Indian aviation authorities as they determine its cause and assess whether any further safety measures are required.

Sahibzada Farhan overtakes Abhishek Sharma to claim no. 2 in ICC T20I rankings

Pakistan’s opening batter Sahibzada Farhan has moved up to second place in the newest ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings, released on Wednesday. He has pushed past India’s Abhishek Sharma in the process. Farhan, who is 30 years old, now holds 848 rating points. That puts him just ahead of Abhishek, who slipped down to third place with 819 points. Abhishek’s drop followed a difficult stretch of form. He struggled during recent tours to Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe, and those low scores clearly took a toll on his ranking. At the very top, India’s Ishan Kishan remains untouched. He continues to hold the No. 1 spot with 910 rating points. Outside of the shakeup between Farhan and Abhishek, the rest of the top five batters stayed largely the same, with no major shifts to report. A little further down the list, India’s Tilak Varma made progress too, climbing two places to sit sixth overall. Meanwhile, England saw a small dip, as both Harry Brook and Jos Buttler each fell one spot. South Africa’s Dewald Brevis had reason to celebrate, breaking into the top 10 for the first time after advancing one position to land at 10th. Perhaps the most eye-catching move, though, belongs to a teenager. Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped an astonishing 230 places, landing at 48th with 536 points. That leap comes right after he was named player of the series during Zimbabwe’s tour, a clear sign of his rapid rise in the format. Turning to the bowlers, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan remains comfortably at the top of the T20I bowling charts. Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed continues to hold second place, sitting on 736 points, while England’s Adil Rashid rounds out the top three. Further down the bowling table, Mohammad Nawaz stayed steady at 10th with 658 points. Fast bowler Salman Mirza also made a small gain, moving up one place to 15th. Not everyone rose, though. India’s Varun Chakaravarthy dropped three spots and fell out of the top 10 entirely. On the flip side, Australia’s Nathan Ellis had a good update, climbing into the top five bowlers with 675 rating points to his name.
