Canada announces retaliatory tariffs as trade talks with US collapse

OTTAWA: Canada has announced plans to impose new tariffs on a range of American products in response to steep duties introduced by US President Donald Trump on Canadian goods,

marking another sharp deterioration in trade relations between the two North American neighbours.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday that Canada would adopt a “dollar-for-dollar” approach to Washington’s latest tariffs. The retaliatory measures are scheduled to take effect on September 8 and will cover products including US steel, electronics, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and other goods.

The announcement came after three days of intensive negotiations between Canadian and US officials ended without a trade agreement. Both sides blamed the other for the failure to reach a breakthrough, raising fresh uncertainty over the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade framework.

Carney vows to defend Canadian economy

Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Carney said Canada would respond to the US measures in an effort to shield workers, farmers, businesses and families from the economic impact of the new duties.

“Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar,” Carney said, stressing that Ottawa could not accept the conditions put forward by the US administration.

Asked whether the dispute had effectively developed into a trade war, Carney responded in stark terms, saying Canada had been attacked and therefore had to defend its economic interests.

The Canadian government said its countermeasures would target a broad selection of US products. Further details, including the specific goods affected and the tariff rates, are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Carney also indicated that Ottawa would introduce support programmes for Canadian industries affected by the American duties. The assistance could remain in place for several years depending on the impact of the trade measures.

US-Canada negotiations break down

The latest dispute follows the collapse of negotiations that had been viewed as an opportunity to prevent a further escalation in tariffs.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described the failed talks as a missed opportunity for Canada and said Washington would proceed with measures responding to Canadian retaliation. He also suggested that no fresh negotiations were immediately planned.

The White House and offices representing the US commerce secretary and trade representative did not immediately issue a detailed response to Canada’s announcement.

The breakdown has created additional uncertainty for businesses operating across the US-Canada border, particularly industries that depend heavily on integrated North American supply chains.

New US duties affect key Canadian exports

The latest US tariffs apply to a range of Canadian exports, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing equipment and hockey-related products.

According to the Canadian government, the new duties affect approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States. Unlike some previous measures, the latest tariffs do not fully exempt products traded under the existing North American trade agreement.

The new duties represent a relatively small share of Canada’s overall exports to the US, but officials and industry representatives warn that individual sectors could face significant pressure.

Industries such as softwood lumber, wine, manufacturing and other export-oriented businesses could experience weaker demand, higher costs and potential employment losses if the dispute continues.

Candace Laing, chief executive of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, urged companies across the country to prepare for a prolonged period of uncertainty.

Dispute over vehicles and trade conditions

One of the most difficult issues during the negotiations involved the treatment of larger vehicles.

Canadian negotiators reportedly sought to extend preferential tariff arrangements for light-duty vehicles to medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Washington opposed the proposal, according to people familiar with the negotiations.

Carney said the US position could have placed Canadian-made models at a competitive disadvantage. He specifically pointed to vehicles produced in Canada, including Ford’s F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks and General Motors’ Silverado.

The Canadian prime minister also said some US proposals touched on issues involving Canadian culture, language and sovereignty, although he did not provide further details.

Ontario backs Ottawa’s position

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, a prominent critic of US tariffs, welcomed Carney’s decision to reject what he described as an unfavourable agreement.

Ford said the proposed terms would have harmed Ontario’s automotive, steel and manufacturing industries, adding that he supported Ottawa’s decision to retaliate rather than accept a deal that he considered damaging to the province.

Ontario is particularly exposed to disruptions in US-Canada trade because of its large manufacturing and automotive sectors and its close integration with American supply chains.

Canada seeks new international partnerships

The escalating dispute also comes as Canada seeks to reduce its economic dependence on the United States.

Nearly 70% of Canadian exports are destined for the US market, making the country particularly vulnerable to changes in American trade policy. Carney has nevertheless pledged to strengthen Canada’s relationships with other countries and explore new trade and security partnerships.

The prime minister was elected on a platform that included a tougher negotiating stance toward the Trump administration. His government has maintained that Canada should defend its economic interests while looking for opportunities to expand trade beyond its southern neighbour.

Public opinion has also strengthened Ottawa’s position, with polling indicating that many Canadians oppose making major concessions to Washington.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who leads the federal opposition, also called for national unity in response to the US tariffs.

    A major technological defect within New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) added approximately 6,600 non-U.S. citizens to the state’s voters between June 2023 and June 2024. Governor Mikie Sherrill publicly disclosed the finding during a news briefing, explaining that an investigation was immediately launched upon discovery to ensure election rolls are corrected and fully secured. Preliminary assessments conducted by election authorities indicate that fewer than 400 of those erroneously added individuals actually went on to participate in elections. Officials emphasized that there is no indication these votes altered the outcome of any contest or resulted from intentional fraud by the affected residents. The voter registration system used across New Jersey driver’s license centers relies on digital touchpads designed to streamline voter sign-ups. When residents apply for or renew state identification or driver’s licenses, the system asks a series of preliminary eligibility questions, including whether the applicant is a United States citizen. Between June 2023 and June 2024, a severe programming error caused the system to bypass negative responses. Even when non-citizen applicants explicitly selected No on the prompt asking if they were eligible citizens, the software disregarded the answer and forwarded their information to election boards as new voter registrations. Governor Sherrill noted that the individuals involved were completely blameless. They answered the eligibility prompts truthfully, but the automated backend software processed them as voters regardless. Although the underlying code error was patched in June 2024, the full scope of the improperly generated registrations was not uncovered until recently. After identifying the affected records, state election administrators conducted a preliminary audit to evaluate whether any of the erroneously registered individuals had cast ballots. The review revealed that under 400 people on the list had voted in at least one election during the period in question. The misregistered voters were distributed across political spectrums, enrolling as Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters across multiple counties. State analysts confirmed that the limited number of votes cast were widely dispersed across time and region, meaning no single local or statewide race was tipped as a result of the system error. State officials clarified that affected individuals will not face prosecution or legal penalties, as they did not falsify documents or attempt to circumvent registration laws. In response to the revelation, Governor Sherrill announced immediate corrective steps to clean the voter registries and enforce administrative accountability. Election boards have begun systematically removing all 6,600 affected names from state voter databases. The state is mailing official notification letters to all impacted residents, informing them of the system glitch and confirming that their records are being updated to prevent future voter file errors. The state Motor Vehicle Commission is severing ties with IDEMIA, the third-party software contractor responsible for managing the license registration keypads, and moving to onboard a new vendor. The Governor’s Chief Counsel has opened an internal investigation into why the error persisted for a full year under the previous administration without being escalated or publicly reported. The disclosure has drawn varied reactions across the political and advocacy landscape. Voting rights organizations, including the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, commended the current administration for its swift transparency and proactive purging of improper records while reiterating that affected residents were victims of a software glitch rather than bad actors. At the same time, the incident has fueled debates over voter registration infrastructure and database management. Republican lawmakers called for broader overhauls and stricter verification mechanisms across state agencies. State leaders maintained that the issue represents an isolated technology failure that is being thoroughly rectified to preserve the integrity of future elections.

    Dubai launches tourist discount drive for residents

Dubai remains one of the world’s leading tourism destinations, attracting millions of visitors every year with its luxury hotels, shopping centres, entertainment venues and iconic landmarks. However, the emirate’s tourism industry has faced pressure following regional security concerns. Earlier tensions in the Middle East affected travel patterns, with some tourists cancelling trips and hotels experiencing lower occupancy levels. The tourism sector has gradually shown signs of recovery after a ceasefire reduced tensions in the region. Industry officials said many hotels have increasingly relied on domestic visitors and local tourism activity during the recovery period. The Dubai government has also introduced financial support measures to help businesses affected by regional disruptions.     Karachi: While addressing ABAD — the Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan — on Wednesday, Inspector General Sindh Mr. Javed Alam Odho once again reaffirmed the commitment to resolve the Mir Raza murder case on merit and without pressure. He admitted mistakes had been made by the police department, but reassured that all measures would be taken to correct them. He also claimed that the crime rate in Karachi had dropped by 14 percent. He also urged for reforms and need of more professional training in Medico-legal system of police. But all those numbers and all those assurances fall flat in the face of one unresolved case. The fact that a builders’ association felt compelled to raise the Mir Raza issue speaks volumes. It is not ABAD’s mandate, yet its leaders did it anyway — because the mistrust between citizens and Karachi Police has grown too deep to ignore. That mistrust exists not because of a lack of competent leadership at the top, but because subordinate SSPs failed to deliver where it mattered most. A Meeting That Set the Standard  I saw this gap first-hand in my initial meeting with DIG East, Dr. Farrukh Ali Lanjhar. He came across as accessible, direct, and willing to listen — the kind of officer who says, “call me when you need me.” When I requested time from DIG East Dr. Farrukh Lanjhar for an interview, I expected a formal reply or a future date. Instead, he politely asked me to walk into his office and join him for a cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised by the cordiality. I walked in expecting bureaucracy. What I found was courtesy, and a senior officer who was ready to resolve the issue of a female journalist without making her feel like a petitioner. Does the Police Force Lack Role Models?  The meeting was also a wake-up call. At the ASP/SP level, many officers still treat citizens as subjects of a colony and themselves as masters, not servants. I often wonder what fuels this snobbery and arrogance. Is it clearing the CSS? But given our quota system and an exam that has been reduced to testing memory and English rather than intellect or judgment, that in itself is no great achievement. If it were, every government department would be running like a multinational — either making huge profit or excelling in service delivery. Is it the training we inherited from the British Raj, designed to produce a ruling elite? Or is it the culture of imitating seniors who remain inaccessible and aloof? Yet we do have exceptions. DIG East Dr. Farrukh Lanjhar, DIG Traffic Pir Mohammad Shah, DIG CTD Capt. (R) Azfar Mahesar, DIG RRF Usman Ghani Siddiqui, DIG Amir Farooqui, SSP Qamar Jiskani, SSP Saud Magsi, SSP Zeeshan Siddiqui, and above all IG Sindh Javed Alam Odho. Within the same flawed system that all of us are part of, they choose to serve as public servants. The impression they leave is exactly what I witnessed the other day. Can’t they be role models? Because the legacy you leave either lives on or haunts you. We still remember good officers long after they retire, like former ADIG Hyderabad Range, Dr. Jameel. AIG Ameer Sheikh will be spoken of in those terms. Ten years from now, who else will be remembered with the same respect? There were many who were pharaohs of their time, but no one now remembers them with respect after they leave office. A Glimpse of Reforms in East  During our discussion, Mr. Lanjhar also spoke about the reforms he has pushed in East Zone. He said more than 1,000 personnel have been pulled out of desk pools and deployed in the field where they are actually needed. To enforce accountability, he has introduced biometric attendance to eliminate ghost employees. The zone is also moving toward an advanced facial recognition system to ensure that no one can mark false attendance and every officer on the roster is truly on duty. The Mir Raza Murder Case  When asked to comment on the Mir Raza murder case, which falls under his jurisdiction, he responded softly: “A new committee has been constituted,” he said, “and I do not wish to comment before its findings are made public.” However, he assured that he would address all queries once the committee submits its report. As we wrapped up a meeting that ran longer than expected, Dr. Farrukh Lanjhar spoke openly — about the shortcomings of the media, about his personal experiences across different districts and roles, and about the reforms needed to make police more public-friendly. Especially Thana culture, which he called the main “interface” of the police force. Before I left, he said simply: “Don’t you worry, Madam. We will remain in touch. You can call me whenever and wherever needed to resolve your issue.” It left me thinking. Often, just listening with patience to the complaint of the aggrieved party can bring down the temperature of frustration and distrust toward police. That is exactly what was missing in the initial handling of the Mir Raza murder case. The first inquiry committee, in which SSP East Zubair Sheikh was allegedly accused of incompetence and of pushing a suicide theory (by the family), failed on that count. He did not take into account the point of view of the victim’s parents. Neither he nor SSP SIU Samiullah Soomro were able to convey to the grieving family that the police were with them, and that they would do everything to ensure they got the justice they deserved. It was that simple. Had SSP East, Zubair Sheikh, treated it with the same seriousness that DIG East showed toward my complaint — on a far smaller scale — perhaps IG Sindh, Javed Alam Odho would not have had to stand before the media and accept mistakes on behalf of his force.
