AI creates new viruses not found in nature

US researchers have claimed to have developed new viruses with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) that did not previously exist in nature. The development is being described as an important breakthrough in the scientific community.

According to a study published in the scientific journal Science, researchers from Stanford University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard used a naturally occurring phage as a basis and employed AI to generate thousands of genetic designs. A phage is a type of virus that infects bacteria.

The researchers chemically synthesized around 300 of these genetic designs and tested them in a laboratory. Of these, 16 viruses proved to be viable.

According to the study, a combination of the AI-designed viruses was more effective than naturally occurring viruses at eliminating E. coli bacteria.

The researchers said the approach expands the scope of synthetic genomics and could pave the way for more effective phage therapies against rapidly evolving pathogens.

However, experts have expressed concerns about potential biological security risks alongside the possible medical benefits of the development.

Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Toronto and Toronto General Hospital said AI-designed viruses could have certain benefits such as creating specialized bacteriophages that could help tackle antibiotic-resistant infections.

He warned that the same ability to design complete and functional viruses could pose a serious biological security threat if used to create harmful pathogens. Therefore, strong safety regulations, screening and monitoring are necessary alongside the technology.

Professor Fatima Wafai of the University of New South Wales in Sydney said the current research does not pose a direct threat to humans because phages infect only bacteria. However, she noted that the methods used in the research could potentially be misused for harmful purposes.

Tom Ellis, an expert in synthetic genome engineering at Imperial College London described the research as impressive but said it also demonstrates that AI is still far from being able to design complex genomes, cells and large viruses.

He explained that the phage genome used in the study is very small and relatively simple while the genome of the virus that causes COVID-19 is approximately six times larger. The complexity of designing larger genomes increases rapidly.

According to Ellis, the research does have implications for biological security. However, modifying naturally occurring viruses remains a more serious and immediate threat than creating new pathogens with AI.

Hsu Li Yang, director of the Asia Centre for Health Security in Singapore also said that it may be possible to use AI to make viruses more dangerous. However, he cautioned against exaggerating the implications of the research.

He clarified that the study does not mean that anyone with basic scientific or laboratory knowledge can now create life-saving or dangerous viruses at home. Considerable technical expertise is still required to physically produce a virus in a laboratory after it has been designed.

Experts say the research is both medically promising and concerning from a biological security perspective as it demonstrates a technology that could potentially be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes.

Professor Margarita Fontana from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry who led the research said the treatment was found to be safe and effective even for children as young as one year old. Experts believe that if SDF receives full approval as a standard treatment for tooth decay it could make dental care easier less expensive and far less stressful for young children and their families.

    Theories behind Shakespeare’s true identity

    For centuries, William Shakespeare has been indicated as the undisputed genius of Western literature. His masterworks, ranging from the tragedy of Hamlet to the romantic drama of Romeo and Juliet, form the bedrock of English theater. Yet, beneath the reverence lies one of the most persistent controversies in literary history. Did a provincial actor from Stratford-upon-Avon actually pen these legendary plays? Was Shakespeare merely a convenient alias for another genius working in the shadows? The Paradox of the Bard’s Background Doubts surrounding Shakespeare’s authorship stem largely from the sharp contrast between his known biography and the astonishing depth of his literary canon. Born in 1564, Shakespeare attended the local grammar school where he learned Latin and basic rhetoric. He never pursued higher education at a university, nor did he ever leave England. In contrast, the plays attributed to him demonstrate an extraordinary mastery of complex subjects. They reveal intimate familiarity with international geography, continental languages, high-stakes royal politics, aristocratic court etiquette, and intricate legal doctrines. In an era before public libraries and widespread travel, skeptic scholars often called Anti-Stratfordians question how a man with limited schooling and exposure to foreign cultures could possess such erudition. This discrepancy has led many to speculate that the real Shakespeare acted primarily as a public frontman. As an actor and shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Shakespeare was well-positioned in London’s theatrical community. High-born courtiers or politically vulnerable figures who wished to write plays may have utilized Shakespeare’s name to publish their works safely. The Leading Candidates Over years, prominent figures from Tudor and Jacobean society have emerged as alternatives for the true authorship. Sir Francis Bacon: A brilliant philosopher, statesman, and pioneer of the scientific method. Bacon possessed the intellectual rigor and courtly insight required to craft the plays. Proponents argue that he’s Lord Chancellor and a government insider. So, Bacon couldn’t openly associate with public theater. It would’ve definitely ruined his political standing and risking royal disapproval. Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford: Educated at Cambridge, well-traveled throughout Europe, and a celebrated poet in his own right, de Vere fits the profile of an elite playwright. However, a major hurdle for the Oxfordian theory is that de Vere passed away in 1604 several years before iconic plays like The Tempest and Macbeth were produced. Christopher Marlowe: Perhaps the most dramatic theory involves Shakespeare’s contemporary, Christopher Marlowe. A gifted Cambridge graduate and spy for the Tudor government, Marlowe officially died in a tavern brawl in 1593. Skeptics suggest he faked his death to escape charges of heresy and treason, subsequently continuing to write under the pen name William Shakespeare. Notably, the first publications under Shakespeare’s name appeared just weeks after Marlowe’s reported demise. Was the Genius a Woman?   • Remove light grease with warm water

    Stainless steel pots and pans are used almost every day but they can lose their shine over time. Grease, oil food stains and burnt marks can make them difficult to clean. The good news is that you do not always need expensive cleaning products.  A few simple items already available at home can help keep your stainless steel cookware clean and shiny. Soak away light grease For light grease and small stains soak the pot in warm water with some dishwashing liquid for a while.  The warm water helps soften stuck food and grease. After soaking gently clean the surface with a soft sponge. Avoid using too much force. Use vinegar for burnt food When food gets burnt avoid scraping the pot with a sharp or rough tool.  This can leave scratches on the stainless steel. Instead pour a small amount of white vinegar over the burnt area and let it sit for a few minutes.  Then gently clean it with a soft sponge and wash the pot well. Try Baking Soda for Tough Stains For stubborn marks make a thick paste by mixing baking soda with a little water.  Apply the paste to the stained area and leave it for about 30 minutes. After that gently wipe the area with a wet sponge and rinse the pot thoroughly with clean water. Do not leave dirty pots for long Cleaning becomes much easier when you do not leave dirty cookware sitting for hours.  Remove leftover food soon after cooking and wash the pot when possible. Burnt food and grease become harder to remove when they are left on the surface for a long time. Protect your hands while cleaning Frequent contact with water and dishwashing products can make your hands dry.  Wearing rubber or disposable gloves while washing dishes can help protect your skin. After cleaning dry your hands properly and apply a moisturizer to help prevent dryness.

  • Keep your laptop cool

    A charger should not be chosen only because its connector fits your laptop. Its voltage, current and power rating must also match the laptop’s requirements. Using a cheap or poor quality charger can cause charging problems and may damage the battery or other components.  In some cases faulty chargers can also create electrical or fire hazards. Do not ignore excessive heat If your laptop becomes unusually hot while charging do not ignore it. High temperatures can reduce battery health and may affect other internal components. Stop demanding tasks for a while, move the laptop to a cooler place and make sure its vents are not blocked.  A good cooling pad may also help in some situations. Avoid heavy work while charging Using a laptop while it is charging is not automatically harmful.  Normal activities such as browsing the internet writing documents or watching videos are usually fine. However heavy gaming 4K video editing or running demanding software can put a lot of load on the processor and cooling system.  If the vents are blocked or full of dust the laptop may become even hotter. Do not regularly drain the battery to zero Repeatedly allowing a modern lithium-ion or lithium polymer battery to reach 0% is generally not the best everyday habit. Try to charge the laptop before the battery becomes completely empty. If the battery percentage seems inaccurate follow the manufacturer’s instructions for battery calibration if that feature or procedure is recommended. Be careful with public charging Avoid using unknown chargers power banks or cables in public places.  Poor quality charging equipment can damage your device while unfamiliar USB connections may also create security and data risks. Keep the laptop clean dust can build up around cooling fans and air vents over time. This can reduce airflow and cause the laptop to heat up. Clean the vents regularly using a suitable cleaning method recommended for your laptop.  Avoid forcing dust deeper into the device. Use a Proper battery and Charger A laptop battery is more than a simple power source. It includes safety features and charging controls designed for a specific device. If the original battery needs replacement choose a compatible good-quality battery from a reliable source rather than using an unverified replacement. If the battery becomes swollen the bottom of the laptop starts to bulge the device suddenly shuts down or it becomes unusually hot stop using it and have it checked by a qualified technician.  Do not try to open or remove a swollen battery yourself. Check the Charging cable The charging cable is just as important as the charger. Do not use a cable that is cut burned damaged unusually hot or has a loose connection. A damaged cable can cause unstable charging and may create electrical or safety risks. Small habits can protect your laptop Charging a laptop is simple but careless habits can slowly affect its battery and overall performance. Using the right charger keeping the device cool avoiding blocked vents and taking care of the battery can help your laptop stay in good condition for longer.

  • Indian Yoga teacher sets underwater push up record

    An Indian yoga instructor living in Vietnam has set a new world record by completing 86 push ups underwater on a single breath showing remarkable strength and breath control. The record was achieved by 38 year old Kamal Kloi in a swimming pool in Vietnam. He said his training in calisthenics and special breath holding techniques helped him complete the difficult challenge. This is not his first world record. In 2020, Kamal earned a place in the Guinness World Records by performing 21 yoga poses underwater without coming up for air. •Speaking to guinness World records Kamal said he has always enjoyed taking on unique challenges.  He explained that watching other people achieve world records inspired him to push his own limits and try something different. He added that years of practice physical fitness and breath control training played a key role in helping him achieve this milestone.   • Fake it till you break it: inside the deepfake era

    Previously, I believed that if one could see something, it could be trusted because seeing is believing. A video was proof. A voice recording was evidence. That belief is gone, and I don’t think we have fully sat with the implications. There is an abnormal shift happening. AI-generated images, voice cloning, face-swapping apps, and similar tools were supposed to expand how people express themselves, but instead they have slowly chipped away at what matters most: the belief that people can express themselves through their images and their words. I attended a workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) last week. During the discussions on digital trust. I took part in the discussion and shared my thoughts that we are now in a time where we must take this out of the realm of fun tech novelty and place it in the realm of a structural issue in how societies operate. Everyone says deepfakes are a “misinformation” issue, but this is not an adequate way to describe it. Misinformation is something that’s a false statement that can, in theory, be fact-checked. Deepfakes strike at the heart of video and audio credibility which have always been treated as vivid reality. When people realize that any clip can be fabricated, they stop trusting all clips, even real ones. This is what concerns me most. Fake things are believed and real things become deniable. Consider the implications of journalism, courts, political accountability, etc. If a politician is recorded saying something damaging, they can simply claim that it’s a “deepfake” and, depending on how much trust citizen have lost, people may believe them. We are creating a society in which it is possible to negotiate authenticity and in which negotiable authenticity is a gift for those who wish to avoid consequences. I also face a conflict here: I strongly believe in free speech, satire, parody, art and provocation even with synthetic media. The same technology behind de-aged actors, resurrected voices, dubbing, and experimental AI is extremely creative, yet it is all connected to malicious deepfakes. There is no way to ‘clean’ a tool of its worst use-case. A hammer can break windows or build houses. I do not think banning synthetic media is the answer, nor do I support pre-emptive censorship. That path harms legitimate satire, journalism and art under the pretense of ‘preserving truth’. History does not look kindly on institutions that decide what is a “fair” fake. Freedom of expression has never been of consequence or friction, and right now, deepfakes have almost no friction. The reality is there is no cost, disclosure, and accountability in using this technology deceptively. The issue is the imbalance. I believe the solution is not reducing synthetic tools but improving provenance. We need a digital watermarking, which cannot be “easily removed”: cryptographic signatures embedded into cameras, microphones and generative tools at the point of creation, so that the “unverified” label appears by default, not as an afterthought. Not to prohibit any content but to allow people to know what they are seeing before deciding whether to trust it. Platforms have been allowed to operate without responsibility for too long. Convincing fakes can reach millions before correction and corrections never travel as far. This asymmetry is not natural; it is a design choice. Platforms can mark, rate or tag synthetic content at the time of dissemination. Most simply haven’t had to! But, beyond platforms, we must change our own instincts as individuals. The old saying was “pics or it didn’t happen.” The new rule should be: “Who gains from believing this and can I verify it myself? A society that believes everything or worse, believes nothing is in danger. The deepfake age is not the age of AI; it is the consequences of a world where the cost of faking reality is near zero and the cost of establishing truth remains high. Freedom of expression should protect the most challenging and profound exchange of ideas, not the production of fake consent, fake evidence, or fake people. We can have creative freedom and still expect honesty about sources. These are not competing prioritie These are not different objectives/priorities. However, if we pretend it’s a content-moderation footnote, we must make sure we are not waking up in a world where “fake it till you make it” has become ‘fake it till you break it” and by that time, it won’t be just one video or one lie that will break. It will be our fundamental ability to reach a shared understanding of reality.
