AJK election polling ends, counting underway

Polling for the second phase of the 2026 general elections to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly concluded on Sunday, with vote counting now underway across the contested constituencies. The election was held for eight constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in different cities of Pakistan.

Polling in LA-27 Muzaffarabad was postponed due to bad weather and landslides, while clashes in LA-31 left a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) worker dead. In Khawra, Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Salahuddin Junejo and two party workers were injured in a firing incident.

Voting began at 8:00 a.m. and was originally scheduled to end at 5:00 p.m. However, the AJK Election Commission extended polling by one hour in the Muzaffarabad Division due to a high voter turnout, allowing voters to cast their ballots until 6:00 p.m.

More than 1.2 million registered voters were eligible to vote in the second phase of the elections. A total of 208 candidates contested nine constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division, which has 809,621 registered voters, while 143 candidates competed for the 12 refugee seats. Authorities established 1,483 polling stations across the Muzaffarabad region, with heavy security deployed at highly sensitive locations.

Polling Postponed in LA-27

Although elections were scheduled in nine constituencies of Muzaffarabad Division, polling was held in only eight. The Election Commission postponed voting in LA-27 Muzaffarabad-II (Lachhrat) after severe weather and landslides disrupted access to several polling stations. Fresh polling in the constituency has been scheduled for August 4.

Voting in some constituencies began late, while the PPP accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of electoral irregularities. The party’s election cell submitted formal complaints to the Chief Election Commissioner.

Clashes and Violence

A PPP worker, identified as Mushtaq Shah, was killed during clashes in LA-31. In Khawra, PPP MNA Salahuddin Junejo, who represents NA-210 Sanghar-II, suffered a gunshot wound to his arm during a firing incident. Two party workers were also injured and all three were shifted to hospital for treatment.

In LA-29 (Muzaffarabad-III), polling was temporarily suspended after clashes erupted between supporters of the PML-N and the PPP.

In LA-43 (Rawalpindi Valley-IV), PPP candidate Javed Butt reportedly entered the Millat Colony polling station accompanied by an armed guard. According to reports, the guard was not stopped by police personnel.

Security and Key Contests

Constituencies LA-28, LA-29, and LA-31 were declared highly sensitive due to security concerns. Closely watched contests included prominent political figures such as Shah Ghulam Qadir of the PML-N, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), former Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, and AJK Legislative Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar.

In the Rawalpindi Division, 35 candidates contested three refugee seats, representing 27,907 registered voters. Voting also took place in Karachi for two refugee constituencies representing Kashmir and Jammu.

For security, around 4,000 police personnel were deployed. Out of 175 polling stations, 31 were declared sensitive. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 41 polling stations were established across 21 districts for LA-45 Kashmir Valley-VI, where 7,655 registered voters were eligible to cast their ballots.

Five killed in tragic Car crash on Lahore’s cana…

LAHORE: Five people were killed and another was injured in a tragic road accident on Lahore’s Canal Road after a speeding car reportedly went out of control and struck two pedestrians before crashing into a utility pole and a tree. According to Rescue 1122, the accident occurred on Canal Road near Harbanspura in Lahore. The incident claimed the lives of three young people travelling in the car as well as two pedestrians who were walking along the roadside. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was allegedly performing drifting on the road when he lost control of the vehicle. The car reportedly mounted the footpath alongside the canal and struck two young pedestrians. It then continued moving before crashing into an electricity pole and a tree. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in multiple fatalities. Three occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while two pedestrians also lost their lives as a result of being hit by the speeding car. An 11-year-old boy who was travelling in the car was injured in the accident. Rescue teams reached the site after receiving information about the crash and began rescue and emergency operations. The injured child was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. According to information available after the incident, the four people travelling in the car were cousins. The victims were reportedly young, with the ages of those who died ranging between 15 and 18 years. A report regarding the circumstances before the accident stated that the four boys had allegedly left their home around 6am while their family members were still asleep. They reportedly took the car and went out, after which the fatal accident occurred on Canal Road. The incident has raised concerns about dangerous driving and the risks associated with speeding and performing stunts on public roads. Drifting, particularly at high speed and on busy roads, can result in a driver losing control of a vehicle within seconds. The consequences can be devastating not only for the occupants of the vehicle but also for pedestrians and other road users. Canal Road is an important route in Lahore and carries significant traffic throughout the day. Although the accident occurred early in the morning, the presence of pedestrians near the roadside made the situation particularly dangerous. The deaths of the young people have caused grief among their families and relatives. The fact that the victims were reportedly teenagers has added to the tragedy, while the two pedestrians who were also killed became unintended victims of the alleged reckless driving. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including the speed of the vehicle and the eyewitness claims that the driver had been performing drifting before losing control. Investigators may also examine the vehicle and the accident site to determine the exact sequence of events. The accident once again highlights the importance of responsible driving, particularly among young drivers. Speeding, reckless manoeuvres and driving without adequate experience can have fatal consequences. The incident serves as a tragic reminder that public roads are shared spaces and that reckless behaviour behind the wheel can put the lives of innocent pedestrians and passengers at serious risk. Families and road safety authorities have repeatedly urged young people to avoid dangerous driving practices and follow traffic regulations. Further details regarding the investigation and the condition of the injured 11-year-old are expected as authorities continue to assess the incident.

Meghan McCain gives scathing response to trolls ca…

Meghan McCain is refusing to let online criticism define her. The former The View co-host recently fired back at social media trolls after they mocked her appearance, calling her “old” and “ugly.” Instead of ignoring the comments, McCain delivered a firm response, making it clear that she will not allow online bullies to dictate how she feels about herself. The television personality addressed the criticism on X (formerly Twitter), where she called out the growing culture of appearance-based insults on social media. McCain said she finds it disturbing that women continue to be judged so harshly for how they look, particularly as they get older. Rather than engaging in personal attacks, she used the moment to highlight the unrealistic beauty standards many women face online. (people.com) “I don’t care if strangers think I’m old or ugly,” McCain wrote, adding that she is proud of the life she has built. She emphasized that she has a loving family, a successful career, and priorities that go far beyond social media opinions. Her message quickly gained attention, with many supporters praising her confidence and willingness to speak openly about online harassment. (people.com) McCain has long been known for expressing her opinions without hesitation. During her years on The View, she frequently made headlines for passionate political debates and outspoken commentary. Since leaving the daytime talk show in 2021, she has continued sharing her views through her podcast, television appearances, and social media platforms. Her latest response reflects the same direct communication style that has defined much of her public career. (people.com) The incident has also sparked broader discussions about online bullying, especially toward women in the public eye. Celebrities often face criticism over their appearance, regardless of age or accomplishments. Many fans argued that comments focusing on physical appearance contribute to harmful beauty standards and discourage healthy conversations online. McCain’s supporters applauded her for challenging those attitudes instead of remaining silent. (today.com) In recent years, McCain has frequently spoken about balancing her professional life with motherhood and family responsibilities. She has said that becoming a parent has changed her perspective, making her less concerned about public approval and more focused on what truly matters. That outlook was evident in her latest response, as she reminded critics that confidence comes from personal fulfillment rather than strangers’ opinions on the internet. (people.com) Although online criticism remains a reality for many public figures, McCain’s response has resonated with people who believe social media should encourage respectful discussion instead of personal attacks. By confronting the insults directly, she transformed a negative experience into a wider conversation about self-confidence, kindness, and the importance of refusing to let anonymous critics define one’s worth. Lionel Messi questions future after father’s death

ROSARIO: Lionel Messi has cast fresh doubt over his football future following the death of his father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, saying he is unsure whether he can continue playing for “much longer.” The Argentina superstar, 39, shared an emotional message after returning to the United States following his father’s funeral, describing Jorge as a central figure in both his personal life and extraordinary football career. “I don’t know what I’ll do without you, I don’t know how to go on,” Messi wrote, admitting that he now has “serious doubts” about continuing his career. Jorge Messi died last week at the age of 68. His absence was particularly painful for Lionel because his father had repeatedly encouraged him to compete at another World Cup. The pair had hoped Jorge would watch Messi play in the tournament, but his health deteriorated shortly before the competition began. Messi said he kept believing Argentina could reach the final and hoped his father would eventually be able to travel and watch him. Argentina did reach the final, but Messi’s team lost 1-0 to Spain in New Jersey. Messi scored eight goals during the tournament and was once again at the centre of his country’s campaign. Yet the tournament was overshadowed by his father’s declining health. “Every time a match ended I waited for and missed your message,” Messi recalled, explaining how he gradually realised how serious the situation had become. After the final, Messi returned to Rosario to spend time with his family. He said his father initially believed Argentina had lost the final on penalties and was unable to fully experience the tournament because of his condition. Despite the heartbreak, Messi remembered how much his father had contributed to his career. Jorge was not only his agent but also his first coach and one of his strongest supporters. When Barcelona invited the 13-year-old Messi to Spain in 2000, Jorge left Argentina and moved with his son, helping him pursue his football dream. He later managed Messi’s career through major moves involving Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami. “You were a father, a friend, and an agent,” Messi wrote. For now, Messi’s future remains uncertain. His contract with Inter Miami reportedly runs through the end of the 2028 season, but his emotional message suggests that personal loss may force the football icon to reconsider how long he wants to remain on the pitch. For a player who has achieved almost everything in football, the next decision may be his most personal one yet.

Mamdani’s multilingual, meme-friendly style wins over young voters

Zohran Mamdani has built a notably different kind of political connection with New York’s diverse communities. His approach centers on delivering campaign outreach in multiple languages, including Mandarin, Bengali and Spanish. Rather than relying solely on English, Mamdani’s team has woven the city’s varied linguistic makeup directly into its outreach strategy. That approach has helped him connect more directly with working-class neighbourhoods and immigrant populations in their native languages. The New York City mayor’s approach to engaging constituents has repeatedly drawn attention. His localised messaging and public appearances, often delivered fluently across several languages, have become a defining feature of his public image. The style has also sparked plenty of reaction online, with social media users reacting with a mix of praise and humour. One widely shared comment joked that he seems to be collecting languages the way people collect Pokémon cards. Online audiences have picked up on his frequent switching between languages across different platforms, fuelling ongoing viral commentary and internet humour surrounding his public appearances. Mamdani’s rise has been driven largely by viral moments, genuine community engagement, and his multilingual outreach. Together, these elements have made him a particularly influential figure among Gen Z and millennial voters. Exit polling data shows just how central younger voters have been to his political base. Roughly 75% to 78% of voters aged 18 to 29 backed him, contributing to a notable rise in youth turnout during recent municipal elections. Unlike many politicians who stick closely to rehearsed talking points, Mamdani’s communication style leans heavily on relatable humour, short-form video content and an active social media presence. Whether he is sharing lighthearted Gen Z-style clips, interacting casually with a neighbourhood cat, or switching fluidly between Mandarin, Bengali and Spanish, his approach reflects both the language and culture of a diverse, younger audience. Beyond his online popularity, younger voters also point to his focus on core issues like housing affordability, economic inequality and broader representation. By treating everyday culture and multilingual communication as central to his political identity rather than an afterthought, Mamdani has reshaped how candidates in the city are attempting to reach younger, more diverse voters.

Rubio warns of catastrophic US-China conflict

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that any military or economic conflict between the United States and China would have devastating consequences for both countries and the wider world, stressing the importance of carefully managing relations between the two global powers. Speaking during a televised interview, Rubio said the relationship between Washington and Beijing remains one of the most significant challenges in international diplomacy. He cautioned that a direct confrontation between the world’s two largest economies would create severe political, economic and security consequences far beyond their borders. Rubio said the United States must continue protecting its national interests while avoiding actions that could trigger a major conflict. He described balancing competition with stability as one of the most difficult responsibilities of foreign policy. His remarks come as strategic rivalry between the United States and China continues to deepen across multiple sectors, including trade, technology, security and global influence. Economic tensions have remained high in recent years, with both countries imposing restrictions on each other’s industries. The United States has expanded trade measures and tightened controls on several Chinese products and technologies, citing national security concerns. Washington has also introduced new restrictions on advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and robotics, as part of broader efforts to protect sensitive industries and limit the transfer of critical technologies. China has strongly criticised these measures, calling them unfair and unilateral. Beijing has repeatedly opposed US trade restrictions and warned that it could respond with countermeasures to protect its economic interests. Competition between the two countries has also intensified in the field of artificial intelligence, where both sides have exchanged allegations over technology development and intellectual property. Beyond economic and technological issues, both nations continue to strengthen their global influence through different diplomatic strategies. While the United States has focused on reinforcing partnerships with regional allies, China has expanded its engagement with developing countries and strengthened ties with nations across the Global South. Analysts believe that despite growing competition, both Washington and Beijing recognise the importance of maintaining communication to prevent tensions from escalating into open conflict.
