Jasprit Bumrah sidelined for Sri Lanka Tests over knee concern

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. According to reports, the BCCI’s medical team advised him to take extra time to recover from a left knee issue.

Bumrah will not travel with the squad for the series, which begins on August 15 in Galle. The decision reflects India’s cautious approach, as the team looks to avoid rushing its premier fast bowler back too soon. So far, the BCCI has not named a replacement for the 31-year-old.

Bumrah last bowled during the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 16. He was ruled out of the series finale at Lord’s shortly after, following an impact injury sustained while fielding. At the time, the BCCI cited that injury as the reason for his absence.

Following the England series, Bumrah received an injection for his knee as part of a recovery plan designed by the BCCI medical staff. He then travelled to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a round of fitness testing.

Reports suggest the medical team feared that a premature return to bowling could risk a much longer setback, with concerns that the injury might worsen without proper rest.

While the exact nature of Bumrah’s injury remains undisclosed, he has been closely monitored since recovering from a lengthy layoff last year. He had also visited the Centre of Excellence in March for conditioning work ahead of the IPL season.

During that tournament, Bumrah featured in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians, sitting out only their final fixture. His workload has continued to be managed carefully, given his ongoing injury history.

India’s bowling attack has faced several setbacks ahead of the tour. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are both sidelined with hamstring and quadriceps injuries respectively. Washington Sundar has also been ruled out of the first Test due to a hamstring issue, while Akash Deep remains unavailable as he continues recovering from stress reactions in his back.

Speaking after India’s ODI series loss in England, captain Shubman Gill raised concerns over the team’s repeated injury troubles. He warned that these frequent absences could become a significant challenge as India heads toward the demanding 2027 World Cup cycle.

Ahead of the Test series, India will play a three-day practice match in Colombo starting August 7. The tour marks India’s first assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle, following a 2-0 home series defeat to South Africa last November.

    HARYANA: Muskan, the 23-year-old wife of international Indian kabaddi player Shailu Ballhara, was found dead at her residence in the Indian state of Haryana in what police believe to be a suspected suicide, according to Indian media reports. The incident reportedly took place on Friday afternoon. Family members informed the police after discovering her unconscious at the house. Law enforcement officials, along with a forensic team, reached the scene soon afterward and began collecting evidence. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials said the exact cause behind the suspected suicide has not yet been established, and investigators are examining all possible aspects of the case. According to Muskan’s family, she married Shailu Ballhara in December 2023. The couple welcomed their son, Hardik, in November 2025. Relatives said the family had been living together following the birth of their child. Investigators are also reviewing Muskan’s recent social media activity. Indian media reported that a day before her death, she shared a video featuring a sad Punjabi song, which has become part of the ongoing investigation.     CAIRO: Egypt has started a serious review of the possibility of joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Cairo has close and strategic relations with all three countries. He said Egypt’s ties with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye extend beyond political cooperation. Abdelatty was asked about Egypt’s possible inclusion in the defence agreement. He said Egypt has been aware of the pact since the beginning. He confirmed that Egyptian state institutions are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the agreement. The minister said no final decision has been taken yet. He added that the relevant Egyptian authorities are examining the agreement and its possible implications. Abdelatty stressed that defence agreements involve important commitments. Therefore, Egypt must carefully assess all legal and constitutional aspects before making a decision. He said any possible Egyptian participation would have to comply with the country’s Constitution and existing legal requirements. The review will also consider the responsibilities that could arise from joining the agreement. The development comes days after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. The pact seeks to strengthen defence cooperation among the three countries and enhance their collective security. Under the agreement, an attack against any one of the three countries would be considered an attack against all three. The arrangement has been described as a major step towards closer defence and strategic cooperation.

    Peru and Mexico resume diplomatic relations after political dispute

    KARACHI: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Karachi has arrested a key suspected member of a militant network during an intelligence-based operation, officials said on Thursday. According to a CTD spokesperson, Syed Mehdi Nabvi Abidi, who was listed among the top 10 most-wanted suspects on the MQM-L death squad list, was taken into custody over alleged involvement in planning terrorist activities in Karachi and other parts of the country. Officials said the suspect was wanted in several terrorism-related cases registered in Karachi. During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that following the arrest of two of his associates, he and other members of the network had planned attacks in Karachi and other cities. The CTD said the suspect had been nominated in multiple cases dating back to 2004 and 2005, including cases involving the killings of religious scholars and the alleged possession of explosives and other prohibited material. A hand grenade and a loudspeaker were reportedly recovered from his possession during the operation. Following the arrest, CTD Karachi registered two new cases against the suspect. One was registered under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, while the second was registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The department said further interrogation of the suspect is underway. Special teams have also been formed to trace and arrest other alleged facilitators and members of the network based on information obtained during the investigation. The CTD maintained that operations against the network would continue as investigators work to establish the full extent of the suspect’s alleged activities and connections.
