Alia Bhatt’s sweet reaction to Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’ trailer

Alia Bhatt could not contain her excitement once the trailer for Ranbir Kapoor’s mythological epic Ramayana finally dropped. The Jigra actress turned to her Instagram story on Thursday morning to share it with fans. She kept her caption short and sweet. It simply read “DIWALI 2026,” dressed up with a few sparkle emojis.

Alia Bhatt's Instagram story featuring Ramayana trailer

Fans had been watching closely for this moment. Alia has always been vocal about supporting Ranbir’s work online. So her reaction to his big mythological role felt like a natural continuation of that habit. It arrived within hours of the trailer going live, adding fuel to the growing buzz around the film.

This is not the first time Alia has praised Ranbir’s work on the project either. During an earlier Zoom conversation, she spoke warmly about his performance. “I think Ranbir has just done such a beautiful job and I just can not wait for you guys to see it,” she said. “It is just out of this world.”

There is also a personal layer to all this excitement. The film is expected to be daughter Raha Kapoor’s first-ever trip to the cinema. Ranbir has spoken about how much this moment means to him. “I am very excited to take my daughter to the film,” he shared. “It is going to be her first film on the big screen.”

In Ramayana, Ranbir plays the role of Lord Ram. According to reports, he leaned into the emotional and spiritual side of the character during preparation. The focus was not just on the physical transformation. It was about truly understanding who Ram is at his core.

The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra. It brings together a powerhouse cast. Sai Pallavi plays Sita. Yash takes on the role of Ravana. Sunny Deol steps into the part of Hanuman. Together, they make up one of the most talked-about casts in recent Indian cinema.

Ramayana’s first part is scheduled for release this Diwali, in 2026. Its second instalment will follow a year later, during Diwali 2027. With the scale of the project and the anticipation building around it, the Kapoor family’s theatre outing might turn out to be just as special for audiences as it will be for young Raha.

Shah Rukh, Karan tease Friendship Day surprise

Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar have sparked excitement among fans after hinting at a new collaboration on International Friendship Day. The longtime friends shared a playful teaser on social media, leaving followers guessing about the project they have been quietly working on together. On August 2, Karan Johar took to Instagram to celebrate Friendship Day by posting a video featuring Shah Rukh Khan. In the clip, the Bollywood superstar is seen singing the classic Hindi song “Mil Gaya Hum Ko Saathi,” adding a nostalgic touch to the occasion. Alongside the footage, Johar shared a cryptic message teasing an upcoming announcement. The filmmaker wrote over the video: “Our best friend has a new best friend … nice friendship day gift bhai (brother). Who is it?!” The post immediately sparked speculation among fans, many of whom assumed the duo was preparing to announce a new film together. Others wondered whether the teaser was related to an advertisement, a digital campaign or another creative collaboration. The comments section quickly filled with excitement and requests for another Shah Rukh-Karan film. One fan wrote: “Can Karan make a film with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol? We fans have been waiting for eleven years.” Another commented: “Best gift on Friendship Day.” A third fan added: “Just like the Guru Purnima post, I thought this was your next movie announcement, but anything you guys do is special. Waiting to see what this is about!!!” The latest teaser comes only weeks after Johar shared a heartfelt tribute to Shah Rukh Khan on Guru Purnima, describing the actor as his mentor and recalling how their friendship shaped his filmmaking journey. In that emotional post, Johar remembered one of his earliest conversations with Shah Rukh during a trip to Switzerland. He wrote: “Switzerland … I was looking at the mountains (pretending to be homesick and seeking sympathy). He came to me and said Tu director banega aur teri pehli film main karoonga.’ (You will become a director and I will do your first film). I thought to myself… he’s probably low on oxygen and may not completely know what he’s saying.” Johar went on to thank Shah Rukh for always believing in him as a filmmaker, referring to the superstar as his “guru.” Their friendship has produced several successful films over the years, making them one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actor-director partnerships. Professionally, both stars have busy schedules ahead. Karan Johar is preparing to return as host of the second season of The Traitors, which is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on August 13. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for one of the biggest projects of his career, King, in which he will share the screen with his daughter Suhana Khan for the first time. The highly anticipated film is currently slated for release on December 24, 2026. Although neither Shah Rukh Khan nor Karan Johar has revealed what their Friendship Day teaser is actually about, the cryptic post has already generated widespread excitement, with fans eagerly awaiting an official announcement from the iconic duo.

How Gen Z turned India’s NEET protests into a vi…

NEW DELHI: What began as a protest over alleged exam paper leaks in India has evolved into something far bigger—and far more digital. Instead of relying solely on slogans and marches, Generation Z is using memes, Instagram Reels, viral trends, and pop culture references to transform street demonstrations into a social media movement. The demonstrations, centered around alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance examination and concerns over transparency in recruitment and education, have continued for weeks at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where students are demanding accountability and reforms. At the heart of the campaign is the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a youth-led movement that initially emerged after a sarcastic remark reportedly linked to India’s Chief Justice. What started as an online response quickly expanded into a broader campaign highlighting alleged examination leaks, recruitment irregularities, and calls for reforms in India’s education system. Protesters are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s examination process, arguing that repeated controversies have undermined students’ trust in competitive exams. Memes Become a Powerful Protest Tool Unlike traditional demonstrations, Gen Z participants are blending activism with internet culture. Viral memes, trending audio clips, and humorous videos have become powerful tools for spreading their message beyond protest sites. Rather than using conventional political messaging, young creators are adapting popular online formats to explain their frustrations in a way that resonates with millions of social media users. The strategy has helped the movement gain significant attention on platforms such as Instagram, where short-form videos often reach audiences much larger than traditional news coverage. ‘Get Ready With Me’—For a Protest One of the movement’s most recognizable trends is the adaptation of the viral “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) format. Normally associated with makeup tutorials or fashion content, the videos now begin with captions such as, “Get ready with me to join the NEET paper leak protest.” Instead of cosmetics, creators show themselves preparing protest placards, packing water bottles, carrying first-aid kits, and heading to demonstration sites with friends. The creative twist has struck a chord with young viewers, turning ordinary protest preparations into relatable and widely shared content. Romance Trend Gets a Political Twist Another viral internet format, “Who Said I Love You First?”, has also been reimagined. Typically featuring playful romantic questions between couples, protesters have replaced the dialogue with sarcastic exchanges about exam leaks, government policies, and student frustrations. The humorous approach allows serious concerns to be communicated through entertaining content, making the videos highly shareable while keeping attention focused on the movement’s demands. Real Life Meets ‘Subway Surfers’ Perhaps the most eye-catching trend compares protesters running from police with the popular mobile game Subway Surfers. Several Instagram Reels feature demonstrators moving through streets while the game’s iconic background music plays, creating a humorous parallel between the game’s endless chase sequences and real-life protest scenes. For many young Indians who grew up playing the game, the comparison instantly resonated, helping the videos spread rapidly across social media. Digital Activism Enters a New Era Analysts say the movement highlights a broader shift in youth activism, where online engagement is becoming as influential as demonstrations on the ground. Memes, viral challenges, and short videos are no longer just entertainment—they have become tools for mobilizing support, shaping public conversations, and amplifying calls for change. Whether these creative online campaigns translate into policy reforms remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: Gen Z has rewritten the rules of modern protest, proving that in the age of social media, a viral meme can sometimes carry as much impact as a protest banner.

Punjab allocates Rs12.52bn for local polls after 1…

The Punjab government has taken a major step towards holding long-delayed local government elections, approving Rs12.52 billion for the polls that could finally restore elected local councils across the province after an 11-year gap. The decision was taken during the 36th meeting of the Punjab Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The allocation signals that the provincial government is preparing for a fresh local election process after years of political, legal and administrative delays. Punjab last held local government elections in 2015, during the tenure of former chief minister Shehbaz Sharif. Polling was conducted in phases between October and December that year, while elected councils formally assumed office in 2017 following indirect elections for mayors and chairpersons. However, the local government system subsequently faced repeated disruptions. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government dissolved the elected local bodies in April 2019 before their scheduled completion. Although the Supreme Court later ordered their restoration, the councils eventually completed their term on December 31, 2021. Under Article 140A of the Constitution and the Elections Act, local government elections are required within 120 days after the expiry of local councils. This meant Punjab’s next elections were due in April 2022. Yet successive governments repeatedly changed local government laws, forcing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to restart key preparations. Polls Could Be Held by November The latest development has raised hopes that Punjab may finally see local elections later this year. PILDAT President Ahmad Bilal Mehboob welcomed the cabinet’s decision to allocate funds, describing it as a positive indication that the electoral process could move forward. He said the ECP had completed the demarcation and delimitation process and dealt with objections, making it possible for the commission to announce an election schedule after August 17. According to Mehboob, if there is no “unseen factor”, local government elections could be held in Punjab by November 2026. The move could also have wider political implications. Asked whether the PML-N government’s decision might ease pressure surrounding demands for the creation of new provinces, Mehboob said provincial restructuring remained a complex issue. However, he noted that holding local elections could, to some extent, reduce the pressure for new provinces by strengthening grassroots representation. For millions of Punjab residents, the key question now is whether the latest budget allocation will finally translate into polling stations, elected councils and a functioning local government system after years of waiting.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Jacob Batalon revea…

Jacob Batalon is shining a spotlight on one of the most talked-about additions to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actor, who reprises his beloved role as Ned Leeds, recently opened up about the film’s innovative “Spidey Tracker” and explained why the feature perfectly reflects his character’s personality. Speaking to People magazine, Batalon shared that Ned’s intelligence has always been one of his defining qualities, making the new technology a natural extension of his journey.  “I think what’s really cool about Ned is that they never really lost his intelligence,” Batalon said during the interview. Since making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ned has been known as Peter Parker’s trusted “guy in the chair,” using his technical skills to help Spider-Man behind the scenes. Even after the emotional events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the latest film continues to showcase Ned’s sharp mind in a fresh and exciting way.  In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Ned develops the Spidey Tracker, an app designed to help locate Spider-Man across New York City. Ironically, because of Doctor Strange’s memory spell in No Way Home, Ned no longer remembers that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. As a result, he unknowingly spends his time tracking his former best friend without realizing their shared history. The emotional twist adds another layer to the character while staying true to the franchise’s ongoing storyline.  Beyond its role in the movie, the Spidey Tracker has also become a real-world experience for fans. Sony Pictures and Samsung partnered to launch an interactive version of the tracker, allowing fans to follow Spider-Man-themed events, explore global sightings, and connect with the film’s promotional campaign. Batalon praised the collaboration, saying Samsung’s foldable devices fit perfectly with Ned’s tech-loving personality and made the fictional app feel even more believable.  The actor also reflected on how much the Spider-Man franchise has meant to him over the past decade. Batalon expressed gratitude for growing alongside Tom Holland and Zendaya, describing his co-stars as family. He said the films not only shaped his career but also allowed him to build lasting friendships both on and off the screen.  Ned has long been a fan favorite because of his humor, loyalty, and intelligence, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to build on those strengths. Rather than changing who the character is, the new film gives him another opportunity to showcase the skills that audiences have loved since 2017. With the Spidey Tracker serving as both a clever story element and an engaging fan experience, Batalon believes the feature captures everything that makes Ned special. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its successful theatrical run, Batalon’s latest comments offer fans a deeper appreciation for one of the franchise’s most relatable characters. His enthusiasm for Ned’s evolution suggests there is still plenty of room for the character to grow in future Marvel adventures.

Japan’s south‑western Kyushu region has been rattled by more than 100 aftershocks following Tuesday’s powerful earthquake that left at least 13 people dead and many others in critical condition. The quake struck Kumamoto at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) and caused significant damage across the region. In Yatsushiro City, two people were found without signs of life at a factory, while nine others remain unaccounted for. Officials say the scale of destruction is still being assessed, but the combination of collapsed buildings, fires and aftershocks has left communities deeply shaken.
