Kartik Aaryan joins Salman Khan in Assam flood relief effort

Kartik Aaryan has stepped forward for Assam. He has donated Rs 1 crore to the state’s Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The contribution comes as the state continues to battle severe flooding. His gesture follows a similar move by Salman Khan just days earlier.

The Assam CM’s office confirmed the donation on X. The post expressed gratitude for the actor’s generous support. It called the gesture commendable and timely, especially given how badly the state has been hit this year.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also shared his own message of thanks. He said he was truly moved by Aaryan’s contribution. He added that the support would go a long way in helping the people of Assam through this difficult period.

Salman Khan had already been involved before this. He quietly partnered with one of his fan clubs based in Assam. Together, they launched a phased relief campaign through his NGO, Being Human. The effort reportedly started with distributing food to families in need.

Other Bollywood stars have pitched in as well, though in different ways. Bhumi Pednekar and Alia Bhatt have both used their social media platforms to spread awareness. They have been sharing resources and relief information with their followers.

The situation on the ground, however, remains serious. According to the latest ASDMA bulletin, two more deaths were reported in Sivasagar district. One of the victims was a child. This has pushed the year’s flood death toll to 80.

Around 2.12 lakh people are currently affected across four districts. These include Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar. Charaideo has been hit the hardest. Nearly 80,000 people there have been displaced from their homes.

There has been some improvement since Wednesday. Back then, more than three lakh people were reported affected. Despite the drop in numbers, relief operations are still in full swing across the state.

Authorities have set up 112 relief camps so far. These camps are currently housing over 75,000 displaced residents. Multiple agencies are working together on the ground. The Army, NDRF, SDRF and other state bodies remain actively involved in rescue and relief efforts.

As Assam works through one of its toughest flood seasons in recent memory, support from public figures like Aaryan and Khan is being seen as a welcome boost. For many affected families, though, the road to recovery is still just beginning.

Pakistan rejects EU GSP+ report, defends reform re…

Pakistan has expressed disappointment over the European Union’s latest assessment of the country’s performance under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), saying the report does not accurately reflect the scale of reforms implemented over the past several years. Speaking during the weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan appreciates that the report acknowledges the country’s legislative progress and continued implementation of the 27 international conventions linked to the GSP+ programme. However, he said the overall assessment presents an unbalanced picture by placing greater emphasis on areas where progress has been slower while overlooking broader reforms. Andrabi said Pakistan has introduced wide-ranging legal, administrative, and institutional reforms since joining the GSP+ scheme in 2014. He maintained that these reforms have strengthened governance, improved labour protections, promoted human rights, and supported sustainable economic development. The spokesperson described GSP+ as one of the most important pillars of Pakistan’s economic partnership with the European Union. He said the preferential trade arrangement has played a significant role in boosting exports, creating employment opportunities, increasing women’s participation in the workforce, reducing poverty, and supporting economic growth. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to constructive dialogue with the European Commission and other European institutions. According to Andrabi, the government remains fully committed to implementing international conventions and continuing reforms aimed at meeting its obligations under the GSP+ framework. He also highlighted that Pakistan’s cooperation with the European Union extends beyond trade. Both sides continue to work together in areas including climate resilience, migration, regional security, counterterrorism, development, connectivity, education, and economic cooperation. During the same briefing, the Foreign Office also rejected allegations made in a recent Amnesty International report regarding Pakistani military strikes in Kabul earlier this year. Andrabi said Pakistan completely rejects the claims, arguing that the report contains serious allegations without credible evidence. He maintained that any military action taken by Pakistan was carried out solely in self-defence and targeted terrorist hideouts and logistical facilities. He said the operations were conducted only after other options had been exhausted and fully complied with the principles of necessity, distinction, proportionality, and precaution under international law. He added that Pakistan exercised restraint despite facing repeated cross-border terrorist attacks. The spokesperson urged the international community to focus greater attention on militant groups operating from Afghan territory. He said organisations such as the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and other affiliated groups continue to maintain bases and carry out attacks against Pakistan from across the border. Andrabi called on the Afghan Taliban authorities to fulfil their international commitments by preventing terrorist organisations from using Afghan territory for attacks against neighbouring countries. He said the continued presence of militant groups poses a serious threat to regional peace and security. The Foreign Office reiterated that Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens. Andrabi said no responsible state can ignore repeated attacks on its people and security forces.

Sahibzada Farhan overtakes Abhishek Sharma to claim no. 2 in ICC T20I rankings

Pakistan’s opening batter Sahibzada Farhan has moved up to second place in the newest ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings, released on Wednesday. He has pushed past India’s Abhishek Sharma in the process. Farhan, who is 30 years old, now holds 848 rating points. That puts him just ahead of Abhishek, who slipped down to third place with 819 points. Abhishek’s drop followed a difficult stretch of form. He struggled during recent tours to Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe, and those low scores clearly took a toll on his ranking. At the very top, India’s Ishan Kishan remains untouched. He continues to hold the No. 1 spot with 910 rating points. Outside of the shakeup between Farhan and Abhishek, the rest of the top five batters stayed largely the same, with no major shifts to report. A little further down the list, India’s Tilak Varma made progress too, climbing two places to sit sixth overall. Meanwhile, England saw a small dip, as both Harry Brook and Jos Buttler each fell one spot. South Africa’s Dewald Brevis had reason to celebrate, breaking into the top 10 for the first time after advancing one position to land at 10th. Perhaps the most eye-catching move, though, belongs to a teenager. Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped an astonishing 230 places, landing at 48th with 536 points. That leap comes right after he was named player of the series during Zimbabwe’s tour, a clear sign of his rapid rise in the format. Turning to the bowlers, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan remains comfortably at the top of the T20I bowling charts. Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed continues to hold second place, sitting on 736 points, while England’s Adil Rashid rounds out the top three. Further down the bowling table, Mohammad Nawaz stayed steady at 10th with 658 points. Fast bowler Salman Mirza also made a small gain, moving up one place to 15th. Not everyone rose, though. India’s Varun Chakaravarthy dropped three spots and fell out of the top 10 entirely. On the flip side, Australia’s Nathan Ellis had a good update, climbing into the top five bowlers with 675 rating points to his name.

Peshawar court rejects asylum pleas of ex-Afghan o…

The Peshawar High Court has rejected asylum petitions filed by two former Afghan military officers seeking temporary protection and permission to remain in Pakistan. The petitioners, Abdul Mujeeb Ghairat and Baryalai Sharifi, had approached the court after expressing fears for their safety if they were forced to return to Afghanistan. They requested permission to stay in Pakistan temporarily. They also sought extensions of their visas and protection from arrest, harassment and deportation. The former Afghan servicemen argued that returning to Afghanistan could expose them to serious threats to their lives because of their previous positions in the Afghan security establishment. According to court documents, Ghairat had worked as a special agent with the protective service of the former Afghan president. Sharifi had served as a general in the former Afghan National Army. The two petitioners submitted Afghan passports and other documents to support their requests. They also referred to their need for emergency medical treatment and temporary residence in Pakistan. Ghairat told the court that he had already submitted an online application seeking an extension of his Pakistani visa. After examining the petitions, the court ruled that the applicants had not established any violation of their fundamental constitutional rights. The court observed that fears about possible threats after returning to Afghanistan, without sufficient supporting evidence, could not by themselves justify intervention under Article 199 of the Constitution. The court also clarified that decisions concerning the stay of foreign nationals in Pakistan fall within the authority of the relevant government departments. It said matters involving the issuance, extension or cancellation of visas and immigration status are governed by applicable laws and are primarily handled by the executive authorities. The court therefore declined to grant the requested relief to the two former Afghan officers.

KP rejects Rs6.4bn proposed cut in federal transfe…

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has rejected a proposed deduction of Rs6.4 billion from the province’s federal financial transfers. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the federal government had sought an additional amount from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before the provincial budget. The provincial government had linked the release of the additional funds to a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan and his approval. Afridi said the KP government neither approved nor agreed to the proposed deduction of Rs6.4 billion. He said the additional federal grant had also not been included in the provincial budget for the 2026-27 financial year. The chief minister said the matter was not merely a political dispute but concerned the province’s constitutional and financial rights. He maintained that Article 164 of the Constitution does not give the federal government the authority to unilaterally deduct money payable to a province. According to Afridi, any such deduction requires a clear constitutional or legal basis as well as the consent of the provincial government. He said the Finance Department had clearly conveyed its disagreement with the proposed deduction in a letter issued on August 13. Written instructions were also issued that no deduction should be made without the province’s consent. Afridi said Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam immediately met the relevant officials of the Accountant General KP. The Accountant General of Pakistan Revenues was also directed not to record or implement any transaction without the clear consent of the provincial government. The chief minister said the provincial government had decided to prepare a summary and ordinance under the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) after the province did not receive its share for six months. He said the provincial government did not sign the memorandum of understanding concerning the additional amount because a meeting with the PTI founder was not arranged. Afridi said the KP government had already approached the Federal Constitutional Court to seek its constitutional rights under the National Finance Commission. He made it clear that the provincial government would not compromise on its NFC rights. The chief minister further said the federal government had no authority to unilaterally deduct money on the basis of an unapproved memorandum of understanding. He vowed that the provincial government would use every legal and constitutional avenue to protect its rights and defend every rupee of its financial share. Afridi also said that if the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) achieved its Rs15.26 trillion tax collection target, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s share would amount to approximately Rs175 billion. He added that providing the merged districts with their rightful share under the 11th NFC was also one of the provincial government’s conditions.

KP government orders immediate closure of mines

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has ordered the immediate closure of all mines where explosive materials are used, as part of a broader effort to strengthen security and tighten oversight of potentially hazardous substances across the province. According to official directives issued by the Provincial Home Department in Peshawar, all district administrations have been instructed to take immediate action and ensure strict implementation of the government’s orders. The directive emphasizes the need for swift compliance and close coordination among local authorities to enforce the new measures without delay. The Home Department has also directed all districts to prepare and submit comprehensive lists of mines operating within their jurisdictions. These lists will distinguish between mines that use explosives and those that do not. Officials have been instructed to classify all mines using explosive materials under a Red List, indicating that they fall under stricter regulatory scrutiny and are subject to immediate closure or further action. On the other hand, mines extracting soft rock without the use of explosive materials will be placed on a Green List. These mines are considered comparatively safer from a security perspective and may continue operations in accordance with existing regulations, provided they comply with all relevant legal requirements. The department has instructed district administrations to submit both the Green List and the Red List as soon as possible. The reports are expected to provide a clear picture of mining activities across the province and help authorities monitor compliance with the latest directives. In addition to regulating mining operations, the Home Department has ordered strict monitoring of the purchase, sale, transportation, storage, and use of explosive materials. Authorities have also been instructed to closely monitor the movement and use of urea fertilizer, which can potentially be misused in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices if diverted from legitimate agricultural purposes. As part of these measures, all districts have been asked to compile and submit complete district-wise lists of licensed urea dealers. The purpose of collecting this information is to strengthen oversight of the distribution chain and prevent the illegal sale or diversion of urea for unlawful activities. The Home Department has further instructed all relevant officials to submit the required reports and lists without delay. Once these reports are received, the provincial government will review the findings and determine any additional actions that may be necessary. Relevant authorities are expected to take further administrative, regulatory, or legal measures based on the information collected from across the province. The latest directives reflect the KP government’s commitment to enhancing public safety, improving regulatory oversight of mining activities, and preventing the misuse of explosive materials. By introducing a district-wise classification system and increasing surveillance over explosives and urea distribution, the provincial administration aims to strengthen law enforcement efforts and reduce potential security risks associated with unauthorized use of hazardous substances. The implementation of these measures is expected to improve coordination among government departments and ensure greater accountability in the mining and chemical supply sectors across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
