Arizona police release ransom notes in ongoing search for abducted mother of US TV presenter Savannah Guthrie

Police in Arizona have released the text of two ransom notes six months after the abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of prominent US television presenter Savannah Guthrie.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office made the decision to publish the communications in the hope that members of the public might recognise distinct linguistic patterns or writing habits attributable to the perpetrator.

Nancy Guthrie was taken from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on 31 January. The first note, received by a local news station on 2 February, demanded $4 million in Bitcoin within five days, threatening that she would be killed if a total of $6 million was not paid by 9 February.

The note included specific details regarding the crime scene, referencing a damaged backyard floodlight and a white smartwatch left on her bedroom floor.

A second note arrived four days later, claiming that Nancy Guthrie had died from a heart-related condition shortly after her abduction and had been “buried in nature”.

However, law enforcement officials stated they cannot confirm her death and continue to treat the investigation as an active missing persons and kidnapping case. Savannah Guthrie, who hosts NBC’s Today show, has released multiple public appeals urging the abductors to reveal the location of her mother’s remains so the family can bring her home.

The organisers, American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue, say the programme has support from several Hindu American organisations. However, a number of local groups have criticised the event because of Bhagwat’s participation and allegations surrounding the RSS. The RSS is a highly influential Hindu organisation in India. The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has historical ideological links to the group. The organisation has rejected accusations that it promotes intolerance or violence against minorities. It describes itself as a Hindu-centred cultural and civilisational movement and says its objective is to unite Hindus and strengthen the nation. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has previously raised concerns about the RSS and alleged involvement in violence and intolerance against minority communities. The controversy surrounding Bhagwat’s visit comes amid wider international debate over religious freedom and minority rights in India. United Nations bodies and human rights organisations have raised concerns over reported hate speech, citizenship policies, demolitions of properties belonging to Muslims, changes to the constitutional status of occupied Kashmir and laws related to religious conversion. The Indian government has rejected allegations that its policies discriminate against minorities. It maintains that its welfare and development programmes are designed to benefit citizens across religious and social groups.

    PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hamid is likely to be replaced, according to official sources. The provincial government has reportedly initiated the process of appointing a new police chief. Three names have been forwarded to the federal government for consideration. The federal government will review the proposed names before making a final decision. Sources said the appointment of the new IG is expected within the next few days. The change, if approved, would bring a new leadership at the top of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police. The provincial police chief is responsible for overseeing law enforcement operations across the province. The federal government has the authority to make the final appointment after considering the names forwarded by the provincial government. Officials have not yet publicly announced the names of the three candidates. No formal notification regarding the replacement of Zulfiqar Hamid has been issued so far. The development comes amid continued security and law-and-order challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the police spokesperson, one Rangers personnel was killed during the attack. He said the operation resulted in the arrest of several suspects, who were allegedly found in possession of modern weapons. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the identities of those detained or the exact number of arrests made. Shaukat alleged that the armed groups were linked to elements seeking to destabilize the peaceful environment in Azad Kashmir. He also claimed that authorities were aware of what he described as negative propaganda being circulated on social media by hostile actors. The spokesperson emphasized that state institutions had exercised restraint throughout the situation but warned that attacks on law enforcement agencies would not be tolerated. He said security forces remained committed to restoring law and order and ensuring those responsible for the violence are brought to justice. “The writ of the state will be upheld, and anyone challenging it will face legal action,” he said, adding that police and other law enforcement agencies would continue operations until the security situation is fully brought under control.
