Azma Bokhari hits back at PPP, criticizes Bilawal’s remarks

Lahore: Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari has strongly reacted to the statements made by Pakistan Peoples Party spokespersons, saying they should choose their words carefully and learn to respect their elders. She remarked that it was ironic that “those born out of a blackmailing mandate are now taunting us.”

Azma Bokhari said PPP leaders repeatedly mock a person old enough to be their father by making faces and chanting “Raiwind, Raiwind.” She questioned whether they do not consider it disrespectful when their own leader ridicules someone of a father’s age. She further said that PPP leaders had collectively turned Raiwind into a subject of mockery and routinely insult senior individuals through their gestures and remarks.

The Punjab Information Minister warned that if such abusive and disrespectful language continued, it would be met with an appropriate response. She added that Bilawal Bhutto is not some divine figure beyond criticism.

Azma Bokhari further said that Bilawal Bhutto repeatedly mentions the names of Punjab’s cities in his speeches to spread falsehoods and misleading propaganda. She questioned whether his conduct was not both laughable and lacking in seriousness.

The problem becomes more serious when reporters are working on developing stories involving arrests, FIRs, police encounters, alleged misconduct or other sensitive matters where the police version is essential before publication. According to journalists, the issue is not simply about the availability of press releases. The police communication mechanism largely revolves around a WhatsApp group where official information is circulated, but there is little effective two-way communication when journalists need clarification or an immediate response. “Information is posted in the group, but when a journalist needs to ask a question or verify an incident, getting a response is often difficult,” said a journalist covering police affairs in the division. Another journalist said the communication gap had become particularly noticeable during breaking incidents, when reporters need the official version within minutes rather than hours. The frequent changes of PRO officials have further complicated the situation, journalists say. According to them, PROs are changed so frequently that journalists are often left uncertain about whom to approach for official comments. “By the time a working relationship develops with one PRO, another officer is assigned the responsibility,” a journalist said. The situation raises questions about the effectiveness of the PRO system itself. A police public relations officer is not merely responsible for forwarding press releases; the position also serves as a communication bridge between the police department and the media. When that bridge fails to function, journalists can be left with incomplete information while the police department risks losing an opportunity to present its official position. The problem is particularly important in a region where police operations regularly generate public interest. Arrests, encounters, recoveries, FIRs and allegations against police personnel all require timely verification and an official response. Journalists say the regional police command should establish a stable and clearly accessible media contact mechanism instead of relying primarily on a WhatsApp group for communication. The Punjab Police authorities and senior officers of Gujranwala division should also review the frequent changes in PRO assignments and assess whether the existing arrangement is delivering the level of media coordination expected from a major regional police formation. Without timely communication, the PRO system risks becoming a one-way information desk rather than the professional media liaison mechanism it is supposed to be.

    LAHORE: The Punjab Teachers Union has rejected the recent increases in salaries and pensions announced by the provincial government, describing them as inadequate in the face of rising inflation and calling for the restoration of cutbacks in employee benefits. Central President of the Punjab Teachers Union Rana Anwar-ul-Haq, along with Yasin Warraich, Rana Liaquat and other office-bearers, said the government must end what they described as discriminatory economic treatment of public-sector employees. The union leaders said inflation had reached unprecedented levels, with prices now rising almost daily, making it increasingly difficult for government employees to meet their household expenses. They termed the announced 7 per cent salary increase and 3.5 per cent pension increase insufficient, arguing that the relief did not correspond with the rapidly rising cost of living. They demanded that Punjab employees receive salary increases at par with federal government employees. They also called for the restoration of cuts affecting leave encashment, pensions and gratuity. Yasin Warraich demanded a 45 per cent Disparity Reduction Allowance for Punjab government employees, arguing that denying them such an allowance while similar measures were being considered or implemented at the federal level would amount to unfair treatment. The union representatives also criticised the provincial government for failing to address the growing gap in compensation among public-sector employees. They said Punjab employees should not be deprived of financial benefits available to workers in other parts of the country. Rana Liaquat said employees affiliated with the All Government Employees Grand Alliance (AGEGA) Punjab remained united under the leadership of Chairman Khalid Javed Sangheera and expressed full confidence in the alliance’s leadership. The teachers’ representatives said they would honour the agreement reached between the two AGEGA groups at Masjid-e-Shuhada on June 16. They further announced that the Punjab Teachers Union would fully implement the protest schedule issued under the umbrella of AGEGA. The union leaders maintained that employees would continue their struggle for equitable salaries, pensions and service benefits until their demands were addressed.

Another issue raised by investigators concerns Mir Raza’s smartwatch. Officials said its forensic examination had also not been conducted. Such devices can sometimes contain information about movement, activity and other data that may assist an investigation. The latest findings have added new elements to the case. Investigators are now expected to examine the forensic report along with other available evidence. The police are also facing questions over why some investigative procedures were not carried out earlier. The family has previously called for a thorough investigation and answers about what happened to Mir Raza.

The new agreement is viewed as an attempt to bring these existing relationships under a formal trilateral framework. It is designed to provide a more structured mechanism for consultations, military coordination and strategic cooperation. Why the agreement was signed now The agreement comes amid growing security challenges across the Middle East and wider region. Analysts say conflicts, changing military technologies and emerging security threats have encouraged countries with shared strategic interests to strengthen their defence coordination. The trilateral arrangement is intended to improve collective preparedness and provide a coordinated response to potential threats while supporting regional stability. What the defence pact provides A central element of the agreement is the principle of collective security. Under the framework, aggression against one member is to be treated as a threat to all three countries. What the pact does not mean Despite comparisons with NATO and other military alliances, analysts stress that the agreement is not described as an offensive alliance.
