German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing acute political pressure following a contentious cabinet reshuffle that triggered widespread friction within his conservative ranks.

The internal discord comes at a critical juncture, as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) pulls ahead in national opinion polls ahead of key regional elections in September.

The shake-up was prompted by the abrupt departure of party heavyweight Jens Spahn over his decision to have a child via surrogacy abroad, a practice banned in Germany and previously opposed by Spahn himself.

Merz appointed his chief of staff, Thorsten Frei, to replace Spahn as leader of the conservative parliamentary group, whilst moving Health Minister Nina Warken into the chancellery.

However, additional dismissals, including Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and junior minister Tino Sorge, provoked sharp backlash from party members in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt, who accused Merz of poor communication and unfair treatment.

With approval ratings for the CDU/CSU alliance slipping to 21% behind the AfD’s 27%, the upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern present a formidable test.

Merz has urged patience, predicting internal tempers will cool before parliament reconvenes in September.

However, growing discontent within the coalition leaves the chancellor in a precarious position as he attempts to push forward economic and social reforms.

The report described Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement as significant, arguing that Islamabad managed to perform a role that several major powers, including China, France, Germany, India and the United Kingdom, had been unable to achieve. The analysis further noted that talks between American and Iranian representatives in Islamabad continued for more than 20 hours. It described the discussions as the highest-level direct contact between the United States and Iran since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Although Washington and Tehran subsequently accused each other of violating the terms of a ceasefire, the two sides did not completely abandon the diplomatic process, according to the analysis. The report therefore argued that it would be inaccurate to hold the mediator responsible for the failure of the process, stressing that Pakistan’s role should instead be viewed in the context of its efforts to keep communication channels open between the two sides. The assessment highlights Islamabad’s growing diplomatic role in attempts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran and underscores Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue during a period of heightened regional instability.

The source added that those around Cruise view the situation as an emotional setback rather than a legal issue. “Those close to Tom believe this is an emotional blow rather than a legal one.     Pezeshkian says Iran seeks peace, not wider conflict

    Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Iran has no intention of prolonging the current conflict or expanding it beyond its existing scope. However, he made it clear that the country will continue to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests against any threat. Speaking at a ceremony in Tehran, the president said Iran’s policy is based on protecting its borders while avoiding any unnecessary escalation. He stressed that the country does not seek war but will not hesitate to respond if its security or independence is challenged. Pezeshkian said maintaining national security is not only the responsibility of the armed forces but also depends on the unity and solidarity of the Iranian people. He urged citizens to set aside political and social differences and work together to strengthen the country during a difficult period. The president said internal unity is one of the strongest defenses against foreign interference. According to him, divisions within society can create opportunities for outside powers to influence domestic affairs. He added that a united nation is better equipped to face political, economic and security challenges. He emphasized the need to build a strong and stable society where people enjoy confidence in national institutions and where hostile elements cannot create unrest or weaken public trust. He said Iran must focus on strengthening its social fabric to prevent enemies from exploiting internal disagreements. Pezeshkian also called for greater national cooperation to overcome current challenges. He said every segment of society has a role to play in safeguarding the country’s future and preserving stability. The Iranian president reiterated that his government remains committed to protecting the country’s borders and national interests while pursuing policies that avoid a wider regional conflict. He said Iran’s priority is to maintain security, preserve national unity and prevent conditions that could lead to further instability.

    Arshad Nadeem was not fit enough for Glasgow, says former coach

    Fayyaz Hussain Bukhari, who previously coached Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, has said the javelin thrower was not at peak fitness ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Nadeem’s campaign there ended in disappointment. Speaking to The Express Tribune from Lahore, Bukhari said he had watched Nadeem during throwing sessions and didn’t see the intensity needed to challenge for medals at a major event. According to him, fitness is the single most important factor for any athlete. He added that if an athlete is not fit, competing should not even be considered an option. Bukhari coached Nadeem for eight years and played a key role in helping him qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. He said fitness had always been central to his coaching philosophy during that period. Reflecting on the lead-up to Tokyo, Bukhari recalled that Nadeem had contracted COVID-19 and was also nursing an elbow injury at the time. He said Nadeem had insisted he wouldn’t compete unless he reached full fitness. Through focused work together, they managed to get him back in shape. Bukhari pointed to Nadeem’s strong throw at the Tokyo Games as evidence that the effort had paid off. He also called for mandatory fitness testing before athletes are cleared for international events. He expressed concern that such checks appear to have been abandoned altogether in recent years. Nadeem’s Glasgow campaign ended in a surprising early exit. He failed to progress past the qualifying round, finishing ninth out of twelve finalists based on his first three throws. The result stood in sharp contrast to his performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he won gold with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 metres. While Nadeem has claimed several medals since his Olympic win, his recent form has not matched that historic peak. This has raised some concern, given the immense potential he continues to carry as an athlete. Bukhari was removed from his coaching role by the Athletics Federation of Pakistan after Nadeem finished fifth in Tokyo. Salman Butt has since taken over as his coach. Despite the recent setback, Bukhari remains confident Nadeem can regain his top form. He said the athlete doesn’t necessarily need another massive throw, since he’s already delivered one on the world’s biggest stage. Instead, he believes Nadeem needs to focus on correcting his mindset and overall approach. Bukhari also criticized Butt, alleging he has distanced Nadeem from both the federation and his former coach. He added that he remains willing to help if needed, and called for stronger cooperation among Pakistan’s sports bodies to improve the country’s standing internationally.

    Karachi hosts D-8 Health Summit 2026

    The D-8 Health Summit 2026 begins today at the Karachi Expo Centre, bringing together representatives from the eight Developing Islamic Countries (D-8) to strengthen cooperation in the health sector. The three-day summit will continue until July 25. The international event is being organised jointly by the Ibn Sina Institute, the World Aging Council, and the Karachi Healthcare Expo and Conference. This year’s theme is “Healthy and Age-Friendly D-8 Countries.” The summit will focus on a wide range of healthcare issues, including health diplomacy, the challenges of an ageing population, preventive healthcare, healthy longevity, medical tourism, digital health, the impact of climate change on public health, and sustainable healthcare policies. A key highlight of the summit will be a keynote address by renowned gerontologist Dr Kamal Aydin. He will speak on “Global Health and Aging Diplomacy: A Future Vision for D-8 Countries,” presenting recommendations to promote international cooperation for developing healthy and age-friendly cities, particularly in the context of COP31. Dr Aydin, who completed his education at the University of the Punjab in 1996, has maintained close academic and professional links with Pakistan throughout his career. He is attending this year’s summit as President of the D-8 Health Summit 2026 and the honorary chief guest of the Karachi Healthcare Expo and Conference. In his message, Dr Aydin said it was a great honour to return to Pakistan, a country he considers his second home. He said it was gratifying to see the vision behind the Ibn Sina Institute and the World Aging Council, established nearly three decades ago, evolve into an international platform promoting global cooperation in health and ageing. He also thanked the organisers of the Karachi Healthcare Expo and Conference, including Tanveer Abbas, Dr Abid Abbas Sheikh, and their team, for their efforts in arranging the event. Alongside the summit, Karachi D-8 Healthcare Week 2026 is being held from July 20 to 27. The programme includes conferences, academic sessions, business-to-business meetings, investment discussions, innovation forums, and corporate social responsibility activities focused on healthcare and ageing. During the event, organisers will also launch an international signature campaign supporting the establishment of a United Nations World Assembly on Ageing. In addition, the Global Health and Aging Ambassadors Programme will be officially introduced.
