Ben Shelton storms into montreal quarter-finals after Fonseca Test

Defending champion Ben Shelton continued his impressive run at the ATP Montreal Masters, defeating Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in straight sets to book his place in the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old American, seeded 10th, produced a composed performance to win 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on Sunday. Shelton has now reached the last eight without dropping a set and extended his winning streak in Canada to nine matches.

The victory, however, was anything but routine. Strong evening winds made conditions difficult, forcing both players to adjust their games. Shelton relied on his powerful left-handed serve and aggressive baseline play while trying to keep his composure during the second-set battle.

“It was tough today, not easy conditions,” Shelton said. “It all came down to grit. The tennis was not clean.”

Fonseca, regarded as one of the most promising young players in men’s tennis, had opportunities to change the momentum. The Brazilian led 3-1 and 40-30 in the second set when he landed awkwardly after attempting a smash, appearing to hurt his ankle.

The 18-year-old continued, but his performance became increasingly erratic. He finished with 32 unforced errors, allowing Shelton to stay in control. The American eventually sealed victory on his second of four match points when Fonseca sent a return into the net.

Shelton will next face 13th-seeded Czech Jakub Mensik, who advanced by beating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5. Mensik overturned a second-set deficit by winning 12 of the final 14 points, including a memorable winning lob.

Elsewhere, Spain’s Daniel Merida continued his remarkable hard-court breakthrough by defeating Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1 in just 69 minutes.

The 63rd-ranked Spaniard had never won a tour-level hard-court match before arriving in Montreal. He has now won four consecutive matches on the surface and secured a first Masters quarter-final, guaranteeing a rise into the world’s top 50.

Merida will face American 12th seed Learner Tien, who defeated Argentina’s Thiago Tirante 6-4, 6-4.

“This is a dream come true,” Merida said after the victory, underlining the confidence behind his breakthrough season.

With Shelton chasing another Montreal title and Merida enjoying a stunning rise, the tournament is shaping up for an exciting finish.

    Islamabad: State owned petroleum companies Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) faced serious criticism in the Senate after lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction over missing information, failure to follow committee directions and concerns about company management. The Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum questioned the performance and accountability of government owned petroleum companies and considered taking strict action against officials who failed to cooperate with parliamentary oversight. During the meeting chaired by Senator Umer Farooq, the committee reviewed the appointment criteria for chairpersons and managing directors of petroleum companies, the structure of their boards and progress on previous committee recommendations. The committee took serious notice of the absence of the Managing Director of Pakistan Refinery Limited during the meeting. Members expressed concern that PRL, despite being a state-owned company, did not provide the required information to the committee. The committee considered initiating a privilege motion against the Managing Director of PRL for failing to appear and provide necessary details. The Petroleum Division was directed to submit complete information about the boards of directors and senior management of all government owned petroleum companies. The committee said transparency in leadership appointments and company management is necessary because these organisations deal with matters directly linked to the national economy and public interest. The committee also expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of Sui Southern Gas Company and its failure to implement previous recommendations. Members said SSGC had not provided details of its board of directors despite earlier instructions. The committee also raised concerns over remarks made by SSGC that were considered discouraging toward the Senate Standing Committee’s role in discussing important matters. The committee considered moving a privilege motion against SSGC over non compliance with its directions. The Petroleum Division was further directed to review the tenure of board members who have remained in positions beyond the approved period and submit a detailed report. The committee also raised concerns over the absence of performance audits of oil rigs. Authorities were directed to provide the required audit report within seven days so that the committee could review the performance and efficiency of petroleum sector operations. Members said proper audits are necessary to identify problems, improve production and ensure better use of national resources. The committee also reviewed issues related to LPG quotas and licensing. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority was directed to hold consultations with all relevant stakeholders and submit a detailed report to the committee. Senators stressed that petroleum companies must improve governance, follow parliamentary instructions and ensure public institutions operate with transparency. The committee said accountability in state owned petroleum companies is essential to protect national interests and improve confidence in the energy sector.

    MANCHESTER: British-Pakistani entrepreneur Shafiq Akbar has announced that an online property verification service in Pakistan will be launched next month, describing it as a major step towards protecting overseas Pakistanis from property fraud and restoring confidence in the country’s real estate sector. Speaking at an investment event in Manchester, Akbar said many overseas Pakistanis want to invest in Pakistan, whether to own a home, establish a base in the country or build long-term wealth. However, he said the biggest concern preventing many from investing is the fear of fraud and uncertainty over whether their investment will be secure. He said overseas Pakistanis need confidence that the promises made to them will be fulfilled, whether that is receiving ownership of a home or achieving the expected returns on their investment. “It is our responsibility, as Pakistanis, together with the Government of Pakistan and the private sector, to ensure their investments are protected,” he said. Akbar revealed that an online property verification service will be launched in Pakistan next month, allowing overseas buyers to verify the legal status and ownership of properties remotely before making a purchase. He said Pakistanis living in countries such as the UK will be able to check online whether a property in Islamabad has any legal, ownership or other issues before investing, helping them make informed decisions with greater peace of mind. He said the initiative is aimed at improving transparency in Pakistan’s real estate market and reducing the risk of fraudulent transactions, which have discouraged some overseas Pakistanis from investing. Highlighting Pakistan’s investment potential, Akbar said his experience over the past decade has convinced him that the country offers significantly greater growth opportunities than more mature economies. Comparing Islamabad with London, he said the Pakistani capital has witnessed remarkable infrastructure development over the past five to ten years, including new roads, underpasses, motorways, airport expansion and major public infrastructure projects. He said Pakistan’s growing population, expanding infrastructure and status as a developing economy continue to create strong long-term investment opportunities. Akbar also urged the Government of Pakistan to prioritise the protection of overseas Pakistanis’ investments by strengthening legal safeguards and providing greater security for investors. He said giving overseas Pakistanis confidence that their investments are safe would encourage them to invest back home with peace of mind. The online property verification service has yet to be launched, and further details regarding its implementation, regulatory oversight and the mechanism for verifying property records have not yet been disclosed.
